Earth Day of Service at governors island

For the first time this year, the Friends of Governors Island will partner with the Trust for Governors Island and the Student Conservation Association to host the first public Earth Day event on Governors Island on Saturday, April 23rd. The day will be filled with volunteer service and stewardship opportunities, ranging from gardening to community advocacy, and ending with an island-wide celebration.

The event will be open to all ages and ability levels, and tools and materials will be provided.

Compost By Bike: An Earth Day Social Ride at LES Ecology Center

To take in the city’s natural wonders, the Lower East Side Ecology Center is hosting a 12-mile social bike ride from Harlem to East Village, while also passing through Central Park. The bike ride will specifically take guests on a tour of how food scraps across the city are collected and processed at the center’s four community composting sites. Key stops include Rodale Pleasant Park, Harlem Grown’s 134th Street Farm, El Sol Brillante, and Reclaimed Organics’ East Side Outside Garden.

The tour starts on Saturday, April 23rd at 9:30 am at Central Park North (110th Street and Lenox Ave), and will end at East Side Outside Garden (11th Street and 1st Ave). Waivers must be completed to participate. Free Citi Bikes are provided by Transportation Alternatives for this event.

Earth Day Initiative at Hudson Yards

From Friday, April 22nd through Sunday, April 24th, Hudson Yards will be featuring exhibits by environmental nonprofits and sustainable businesses in the industries of transportation, energy, and fashion. Exhibit features include Volkswagen’s new electric van, Buzz Microbus, now being shown at Hudson Yards for the first time to the public in New York City.

Other events and workshops will be taking place throughout the weekend, including live performances, panel discussions, and even a weaving workshop!

Car Free Earth Day

Every year, New York City’s Department of Transportation hosts a day free of cars across all five boroughs, where over 100 streets, 22 plazas, and 1,000 miles are opened to bikers and pedestrians alike. Enjoy a day in the streets at the following nine locations:

Harlem Earth Day Festival

Harlem takes over Earth Day each year with the neighborhood’s Earth Day Festival, where local artists exhibit and send eco-friendly goods, vegan food from all of the world is enjoyed, and live music by DJs plays throughout the weekend.

Bee-a-pollinator service day at queens county farm museum

Queens County Farm Museum champions Earth Day as a historical institution with a strong stake in a healthy environment. The site is among the longest continually farmed sites in the site and first began activity in 1697, and still depends on volunteers to help preserve its abundant land.

At the Bee-A-Pollinator Service Day on Friday, April 22nd, from 12 pm to 4pm, volunteers can contribute by sifting compost, cleaning the Children’s Garden, mulching, and weeding. Family events such as apiary talks with the farm’s beekeeper, an Adopt-a-Worm station, tractor-drawn hayrides, a scavenger hunt, and free giveaways will also be hosted.

Earth Day Celebration at Battery Park City

Battery Park City will be sourcing its inspiration for Earth Day this year from the Japanese practice of Mottainai, which encourages thoughtfulness about waste. Live drumming performances by Taiko Masala will be hosted along with activities to create and share zero-waste ochiba art design.

Enjoy food, live music, and crafting activities at New York Botanical Gardens this weekend, where nature is abundant in its springtime beauty. NYBG Scientists will also be sharing their work on tours.
