Adam Driver is set to star in a new off-Broadway production of Kenneth Lonergan’s Hold on to Me Darling, this fall.

In what is described as a “tragicomedy,” Driver, portraying fictitious superstar country singer Strings McCrane, falls into an “existential tailspin” after his mother’s death, and decides to pack it up for a simpler life in his Tennessee hometown. Easier said than done.

In 2019, Driver was nominated for a Tony in Lanford Wilson’s Burn This. He has also been nominated for an Academy Award twice, for best supporting actor in BlacKkKlansman (2018) and Best Actor in Marriage Story (2019).

Directed by Neil Pepe, this limited, 13-week engagement will begin preview performances on Tuesday, September 24, ahead of an official opening night on Wednesday, October 16, downtown at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.

Lonergan is both an Academy award winner for original screenplay for Manchester by the Sea, and Tony nominated for play revivals of This Is Our Youth, Lobby Hero” and The Waverly Gallery.

Pepe received a Tony Nomination for Best Director for the production of American Buffalo (2022) and has been the artistic director of Atlantic Theater Company since 1992.

Driver is currently starring alongside Penelope Cruz in Michael Mann’s bio-pic film Ferrari, on Enzo Ferrari.
