Spring is in the air, and it’s Friday night in New York City. With my daughter in town after nearly a year (she lives in Amsterdam now), we enjoyed a lovely evening out in the Lower East Side together, at the Canary Club.
Already by 7:30pm, the elegantly designed, multi-level supper club was packed, with cocktails flowing, and the Freddy DeBoe Band had everyone swaying in their seats . Reservations are strongly recommended.
The menu is based on New Orleans inspired bites and cocktails. I enjoyed one of their signature cocktails called the Meadow Lark, with Navy Gin, Cachaca, Bergamot Liqueur, and Ginger-tasty, not too sweet or heavy, a perfect way to start the evening. And while there is a plentiful selection, those opting out on alcohol can still partake in social drinking, from one of their “Zero Proof” selections, such as virgin piña coladas and cosmopolitans.
We enjoyed a treat of appetizers, including the Escargot, prepared with roast garlic parsley creole butter, and baguette. I also tried out the catch of the day, which turned out to be a lovely Branzino, served with tomatoes, on a bed of jasmine rice.

For dessert, we devoured a decadent sundae with the ice cream of the day, a fabulous Turkish coffee. We topped the evening off with a pair of espresso martinis.
The live entertainment lineup includes jazz, funk, soul, comedy, mixing up the pace nightly. There’s room enough for dancing into the wee hours, too.
