Rocking the Boat during the COVID Pandemic

Rocking the Boat

We believe in giving back to our community and city. When you are a publication it becomes difficult to dig into your pockets for every great charity program. Rather, our part is to inform our readers of the causes that we have worked with and believe in.

Rocking the boat is one of the many programs that we feel is solid for you to invest your time and money. Launching in 1996 as a volunteer project in an East Harlem junior high school, Rocking the Boat worked under the aegis of New Settlement Apartments, which provided both workshop space and students for the cornerstone Boatbuilding Program.

They incorporated as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2001,

Rocking the Boat continued to cultivate relationships with a wide variety of community-based, educational, environmental, cultural, and historical organizations, and over the years have expanded their size and scope of its services.

Namely, the On-Water Education Program which is near and dear to our hearts. This was added in 2002, the On-Water Classroom in 2005, the Job Skills Program in 2006, Community Rowing in 2007, and the Sailing Program in 2015.

This year with the pandemic we were worried as to how this and many children/young adults charity programs would manage. The word for 2020 seems to be Virtual.

Rocking the Boat was brought to the attention of Downtown by one of our subscribers, and close friends Alies van den Berg

Here’s our conversation with Rocking the Boat Development Director, Jaye Pockriss

DTM: Give us the rundown on how the virtual RTB is going this year and are the participants only walking or running this year or are they doing other activities like Rowan get home or cycling?

RTB: They are walking, running, rowing, kayaking, sailing, cycling, hiking.  One woman is riding an adult trike because she has multiple sclerosis.  At least two participants are volunteering to encourage voting in the election.  One woman is knitting, another gardening.  Some dudes are golfing.

DTM: Do you have as many participants and donors?

RTB: We have the most participants ever, roughly 200, and they are from more places across the country (Texas, California) capitalizing on the “anywhere and everywhere” aspect of this year’s event.  Going into the final weekend, 1,700 gifts have been received so far, on par with last year.

DTM: With all the many charitable organizations popping up, why would you encourage our readers to support RTB?

RTB: We can go in a couple of directions here…Rocking the Boat’s South Bronx neighborhood, Hunts Point, is in the poorest congressional district in the nation. Students here need comprehensive and sustained services to contend with the disadvantage of under-resourced schools, and the too frequent lack of adequate family support.

Despite having become synonymous with urban decay and pollution, the Bronx boasts some outstanding natural features including the oldest forest and the only true river in New York City. These spaces are home to a wide variety of trees, plants, fish, land animals, and birds. Rocking the Boat programs intimately connects Hunts Point youth to their environment by helping them enjoy it and giving them the skills to care for it.

Rocking the Boat students work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail, and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves.

Rocking the Boat is committed to helping its participants:

  • Stay in high school until they graduate or receive an equivalency diploma—on average 96% of Rocking the Boat students graduate from high school on time; the rate is an alarming 17.8% in Hunts Point generally
  • Enroll in college or trade school and be prepared academically and emotionally to succeed there—nearly 100% growth in social-emotional competency and enroll in a post-secondary program directly out of high school
  • Develop technical skills such as sailing, boat handling, navigating, chart reading, carpentry, sample collection and testing, scientific observation, and recording data, all of which reinforce STEM concepts and put them into a practical context
  • Develop soft skills such as leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking

DTM: What would you like our readers to know about your organization in order to get them involved?

RTB: Rocking the Boat kept rocking. Virtually, at the onset of the pandemic and on through the summer. We know that the current circumstances could change at any moment, but at the same time, we are excited to have resumed in-person youth development programming as of September 21.  We have confidence that our hands-on boatbuilding, environmental science, and sailing experiences are exactly what our participants need right now.  We are lucky that building, rowing, and sailing boats all take place in spaces—a 2,500 square foot shop with 15′ foot ceilings and outdoors on the Bronx River—that offer plenty of space to spread out and fresh air to breathe. Comprehensive distancing and sanitizing procedures are in place and will be strictly enforced to keep everyone safe.

Rocking the Boat engages over 200 teens per year in a series of STEM-based programs that last throughout their high school careers and into college. Participants enter as freshmen and sophomores and choose from one of three programs: Boatbuilding, Environmental Science, or Sailing. They move from being students to paid apprentices to alumni once they graduate high school, at which point they are eligible to work part-time for Rocking the Boat as Program Assistants.

In addition, roughly 4,000 local residents take part in Rocking the Boat’s free weekend rowing events and school-driven programs, most often through their math and science classes. 200 teens and 4,000 community members per year, this is a huge feat!

Walking Into Health: New Years Resolution

By: Adam Que, a fitness trainer, practitioner, former MMA fighter, and writer

Waking up late in the morning has its consequences. You can either skip your whole hygiene routine, devour anything in sight because you know it would provide you with energy, or throw on clothes that you know should be in the dirty laundry bag. Following by barging out of your apartment to be on a shoulder to shoulder status with other New Yorkers on the street or at the subway station.

I’m sure most of you have experienced all of the above. Of course, walking was most likely a big part of the problem since folks are taking Ubers, Lyfts, and cabs to their destinations nowadays. With this rush of stress and the bumps people are facing in life, how could anyone find walking beneficial? Well, it’s no coincidence Walking and Wellness both start with W.

Here are some key benefits of walking:

Prevents Diseases:

According to a review on the C3 Collaborating for Health, walking is an effective way to prevent or reduce the risk of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Helps With Living Longer and Weight Loss:

Walking is also important for the longevity of life. In the same review, there was a case study on the Global Corporate Challenge that recorded 54% of participants who had high blood pressure showed low risk by the end of a 12-week walking challenge. As well as an increase of energy by 71% and a drop of 10% body fat on average for those who had body fat loss. Another case study recorded that 94% of the walkers part of the Heart Foundation Walking group (HFW), the largest free community-based walking group in Australia said, “HFW was essential for their physical well-being.”

Mental Health:

Besides the physical benefits of walking, I mainly believe it is amazing for mental health. Dr. Lars Madsen of The MindShift Foundation said, “It increases relaxation and can be equivalent to a sleeping pill, even for people with insomnia.” Walking also reduces stress, anxiety, improves cognitive function and can lift one’s spirit instantly, especially when doing it with friends or loved ones.

So besides that gruelly commute, try to incorporate 15 to 30-minute walks throughout your week. Whether you missed a workout, your routine is discombobulated or you feel you’ve been out of whack due to the holidays kicking your butt, get to walking. If you find yourself walking in Downtown Manhattan locations like the Jerry Driscoll Walk, SoHo’s side streets, along The Highline or through Battery Park, take the time to envision a positive perspective and enjoy yourself.

Get to stepping strongly into 2020 to start that first quarter on a healthy foot.

H2O+ Beauty Chairman & CEO Joy Chen tells Downtown about new H2O+ developments

H2O+ Product group shot_body

H2O+ Beauty is a leading brand of premium, water-based skincare products. A subsidiary of the Tokyo-based Pola Orbis Holdings — one of the world’s leading beauty companies — H2O+ recently rebranded itself with new performance-based product lines being the end result. The look of H2O+ products may have also changed, but the quality of H2O+ remains consistent.

Prior to joining the H2O+ Beauty team, Chairman and CEO Joy Chen was the CEO of Yes, To, Inc. Before that she was a Vice President and General Manager with Clorox as part of a 17-year tenure. Aside from these major corporate titles, the San Francisco resident has been active in the non-profit world, sitting on the board of Junior Achievement and working with the Network of Executive Women. In turn, it is not surprising that Joy — who holds an M.B.A. from Harvard University — was awarded Most Admired CEO of the Year in 2012 and Most Influential Woman in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2013 and 2014.

Downtown caught up with Joy about H2O+’s recent rebranding and plenty more. More info on Joy and the brand can be found at www.h2oplus.com.

How did you first become involved with H2O+ Beauty? Was it related to your work with Yes To, Inc.?

JC: I like to work on businesses with a great deal of potential. I found that to be true about H2O+ Beauty and Yes To. What is very special about H2O+ is its strong history and I am super-excited about the brand’s potential for growth behind our recent brand relaunch.

Do you have a favorite product from H2O+ Beauty?

JC: My go-to is always the H2O+ Oasis Hydrating Treatment, which I put on every few hours to keep my skin hydrated when traveling.

What makes H2O+ Beauty different from other brands?

JC: We did some brand soul-searching last year and realized we were really ripe for change. There were a few areas that led us to this realization…

Our Customer: She is extremely savvy with access to so much product information. We started by listening to her, and it pushed us to think and take action on how to better serve her by being more and results-driven.

Our Brand Spirit: We were founded by a young woman who wanted to do things differently in the beauty space, so she dove in and started her own company. Encouraging our customer to define beauty on her own terms, and working with members of our community to realize their power, are values we hold near and dear as a company.

Product: We wanted to streamline our product lines to maximize efficacy and go back to basics with performance-based formulas that leverage the infinite advantages of our planet’s most basic compound without all those unnecessary additives.

What’s coming up for H2O+ in the near-future? Any partnerships? New product lines?

JC: We have some exciting new launches coming out in January 2017 — new product innovation and we are additionally venturing into different categories all together…focusing on some of the trends that we anticipate being big in the future.

As a subsidiary of the Japan-based, Pola Orbis Holdings Inc., how much of H2O+’s branding and direction comes from Japan?

JC: Pola Orbis provides resources and best practices when we asked. However, they have been very hands-off on the H2O+ branding and direction given our team’s extensive experience.

Do you have a professional accomplishment you’re most proud of?

JC: I am extremely proud of the businesses that I have grown and turned around, and all the awards we have won together. But my proudest accomplishment is when I make an impact upon someone’s future. I always ensure that for every business I work on, there is a social mission.

For H2O+, we have a Making Waves Initiative, where we as a team contribute time and money to help underserved women to accelerate their careers through better education. Finally, I make it my personal platform to increase diversity on my teams. I was fortunate enough to work on diverse teams where we are able to deliver breakthrough results. Every team I have built since then had great diversity in gender, ethnicity and experience.

Oasis Group

Do you remember the first time you saw H2O+ products in a New York store?

JC: Yes! I remember the cool looking water images, and I was drawn to the store. I remember loving the body products and of course the oasis hydrating treatment!

When not busy with H2O+ or your causes of choice, how do you like to spend your free time?

JC: For fun, my husband and I love adventure travel. On our list this year is Iceland and Madagascar. We have been to over 75 countries. When I have time on the weekends, I always turn to a nice long walk around the city of San Francisco. Usually a seven-mile walk, which includes several San Francisco hills, and my favorite is Coit Tower.

When in New York on business, do you have a favorite restaurant in New York?

JC: There are so many great restaurants, but my absolute favorite is Brooklyn Fare. My favorite meeting place is the Library at the Nomad Hotel.

Finally, Joy, any last words for the readers?

JC: I am really excited about H2O+’s future. But what really makes this journey memorable for me is the extremely-talented and incredible team I get to work with everyday. None of this is possible without them.
