Asian Film Festival

At the New York Asian Cinema Festival, cinephiles can screen a wide range of films from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia that “say something both very local and specific to their countries of origin and something very universal.” Tickets start at $9.

New Beer Garden on the Bowery  

Say hello to your new summer spot! The new Bowery Beer Garden boasts 40 beers on tap, a total of 80 TVs throughout its sprawling space, oyster happy hour with $1 oysters and delicious takes on American staples. It’s the perfect place to watch the game with a large group of friends.

New York Pools Open

Beginning June 29, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle or cannonball in one of over 60 public swimming pools across the five boroughs. Cool off at Lower East Side’s Hamilton Fish Pool or Tony Dapolito Recreation Center in the West Village. Free.

Wine Guide and Tasting

Feeling clueless when it comes to wine? You’re not alone. Many before you have stood with blank stares trying to choose the right bottle of wine, for the right occasion. Bon Appétit writer Marissa A. Ross offers an “in-depth guide to wine that is both unpretentious and comprehensive.” Join her at the Strand for wine tasting and a discussion of her new book, “Wine. Taste of TriBeCa

TriBeCa is home to some of New York’s finest restaurants. Taste of TriBeCa is chance to sample dishes from Jungsik, The Odeon, Nobu, Marc Forgione, Tribeca Grill, Locanda Verde, Brushstroke and dozens more, over 60 to be exact. Guitar Festival

2. The Things They Carried

As the debate — or assault — on immigration rages on, State Of Exception/Estado De Excepción, an exhibition by artists Richard Barnes and Amanda Krugliak, in collaboration with anthropologist De León, puts viewers on intimate terms with the personal effects of men and women who’ve risked (and in some cases lost) their lives to cross dangerous terrain to reach the U.S. On display are backpacks, clothing, small keepsakes, interviews, recordings, video installation and documents that help paint a detailed picture of the ordeal migrants face in seeking a better future. 3. Wine 101

Wine knowledge is not all ostentatious swirling and sniffing and sugary descriptions… For those that want to get their foot in the “wine” door, Elements of Wine is great start. This 2 hour class with Andrew Fisher, President of Astor Wines & Spirits for over 30 years, will introduce participants to the basics of enjoying, identifying and pairing wine, in layman’s terms. $79 included wine samplings and light bites.

4. Sweet Spot: SoHo

6. Easter Brunch

The setting is casual, but this Italian Easter brunch is definitely decadent. Choose from savory toasts (avocado, salmon or prosciutto cotto with fontina) or lavish salads like the Toscano, made with kale, roasted squash and ricotta, before moving on to the rich selection of main courses, that range from pastas, meatballs to steak and eggs and french toast. Though there are fewer artists, the quality of the work is notable especially from artists Dana Schutz, Jo Baer, Samara Golden, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer, Rafa Esparza, Henry Taylor, Sky Hopinka, Asad Raza, Jordan Wolfson and many more.   1. Swimming Pool: An American Story

Waterside Swim and Fitness (Kips Bay)

Friday, Mar. 17 at 7:00 PM -Saturday, March 18 at 6:00 PM (through Apr. 8)

This Is Not A Theater Company presents an interactive show that explores the role of the swimming pool in American culture. Audiences are invited to literally sit down at the pool’s edge, dip their feet in the blue waters and watch “synchronized swimming, a snarky fish, and an explorer in an inflatable boat” tell the unusual story of this most artificial body of water. $30.

3. Collective Chanting

Rubin Museum Of Art (Chelsea)

The “Om Lab” at the Rubin Museum is a participatory exhibit that’s recording thousands of voices as they chant the sacred sound of ‘Om’ (meant to encompass the sound of all the universe according to yogic tradition) for its forthcoming exhibition “The World Is Sound.” Stop by and offer your voice to “the world’s largest collective chant of OM.” Tickets start at $10.

  1. East Village Saint Patty’s Pub Crawl

This Saint Patty’s pub crawl will be rowdy and crazy and you’ll probably be covered in green magic dust, shamrock sparkles and and colored beads, but it will no doubt be a heck of a night. We’ll only add this: may the luck of this Irish be with you! Tickets start at $3.16.

5. Kinky Films

The Kinky Film Festival, now in its 14th year, asks viewers to explore the “wide diversity of sexuality” and desire. On the roster are documentaries, dramas, comedies and art house films that cut across orientations and range from mild to very spicy! The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a lively affair, but you don’t have to brave the crowds to celebrate Irish culture. Our pick is Big Onion’s Irish New York tour that will take visitors to the “Little Ireland” district of Lower East Side to explores the sites and people that have contributed to the rich history of Irish immigrants in New York. $25.
