Enjoy musical performances, the lighting of the Christmas tree, and be sure to be on the lookout for Santa’s helpers giving away holiday cheer, with gift cards from $10 to $1,000.

Holiday decorations will be based on the illustrations by American artist Kris Ruhs, who has created the visual identity for the iconic Italian concept store 10 Corso Como around the globe, including 10 Corso Como’s only U.S. location. Ruhs has created original, vibrant illustrations which will serve as a public art display along Fulton Street, featured on 300 ornaments adorning the Christmas tree, and on 30 discs up to 10 feet in diameter decorating the façade of the Garden Bar.

“We are excited to introduce Seaport Winter 2018, a new season of community-oriented activities and programming for all New Yorkers to enjoy,” said Saul Scherl, President of the New York Tri-State Region, The Howard Hughes Corporation. “We are committed to providing a year-round amenity for local residents and visitors, and look forward to bringing everyone together to celebrate the holiday season and the highly anticipated opening of The Rooftop at Pier 17 Winterland.”

Why wait, be sure to order memberships and packages to the ice rink www.pier17ny.com starting December 3. Local neighborhood residents, you will have access to a special ice skating discount. Sounds like its Christmas already!

Throughout the winter season, visitors will be able to take skating lessons, learn how to curl, play broomball, or even participate in outdoor fitness classes.

Seaport District’s Founding Partners—Heineken, The Lincoln Motor Company, Chase and Pepsi—will be elevating The Rooftop at Pier 17 Winterland experience with engaging consumer activations throughout the season. In addition, supporting partners Bacardi, Veuve Clicquot, Beam Suntory, AmTrust Title and Red Bull will feature unique weekly programming and special product offerings at The Rooftop at Pier 17 restaurant, R17.

“We conceived The Rooftop at Pier 17 as a completely new, elevated frame for the Seaport and the waterfront,” said David Rockwell, founder, and President, Rockwell Group. “It’s rare as a New Yorker or visitor to the city to experience the skyline at eye level. The rooftop’s immersive outdoor and indoor environments are places to come together and celebrate away from the bustle of the street, but also to be a part of the city’s urbanism on a different plane and at a different scale.”

WWD & The Howard Hughes Corporation announce its 2017 Ten Of Tomorrow list

Earlier this week, WWD announced its 2017 Ten of Tomorrow list, an annual feature recognizing 10 leaders in fashion and retail innovation, as supported through sponsorship from The Howard Hughes Corporation. Both organizations are incubators for unique fashion, design and retail and are invested in embracing the next generation of industry leaders. This commitment to the future of retail continues to provide a glimpse into the transformation currently underway at the Seaport District, highlighted by the only U.S. location of iconic Italian retailer 10 Corso Como.

The Seaport District is currently being revitalized by The Howard Hughes Corporation and will encompass seven buildings on several city blocks totaling more than 400,000 square feet of cutting-edge culinary, fashion, entertainment and cultural experiences, including a 40,000 square foot food market by Jean-Georges in the restored Tin Building that will rival the world’s most popular food concepts and the first Manhattan location of premier cinema operator iPic Theaters that opened last fall. In the new Pier 17 building, culinary powerhouses Jean-Georges Vongerichten and the Momofuku Group led by David Chang will be opening restaurants as the first to be announced in what will become an unparalleled range of dining options in the District.

The 2017 WWD Ten of Tomorrow honorees include: Wen Zhou, CEO of Phillip Lim, Sam Cheow, Chief Product Accelerator at L’Oréal, Tiffany Masterson of Drunk Elephant, Apolis, Jay W. Sammons, Managing Director and head of the Global Consumer and Retail team at The Carlyle Group, Julia Hamilton Trost, Business Development and Content Partnerships at Google, Harper Reed, Lotte Volkova, Molly Goddard and Sabrina Fung, Executive Director of Fung Retailing. Over the course of the year, deeper profiles on each of the winners will be shared through both the WWD and Seaport District digital channels.

“Ten of Tomorrow is one of WWD’s most popular features of the year as it highlights individuals pushing new creative ideas that are helping to shape the fashion and retail industries. This year, we once again have a fascinating mix of designers and talented executives who are challenging the status quo,” said Miles Socha, editor in chief of WWD. “We are pleased to continue our partnership with The Howard Hughes Corporation as its Seaport District transformation helps shape the future of retail, fashion and art in New York City.”

“We are honored to continue our partnership with WWD for a third year, recognizing the exceptional talent that will shape the future of fashion and retail,” said David R. Weinreb, Chief Executive Officer for The Howard Hughes Corporation. “The Seaport District is on its way to becoming an anchor for distinct fashion, retail and entertainment experiences. As the city’s original commercial hub and birthplace of innovation, it is especially fitting for the Seaport to support fashion’s rising stars.”

10 Corso Como To Open Its ONLY North American Location In The Seaport District

corso-como

The Howard Hughes Corporation announced earlier this week that Milan-based 10 Corso Como will be opening in the Seaport District as part of the development’s on-going transformation. The New York store will be 10 Corso Como’s only U.S. location. It will be consistent with the other offerings curated to date by The Howard Hughes Corporation within the revitalized Seaport District, located alongside culinary experiences from renowned restaurateurs Jean-Georges Vongerichten and the Momofuku Group led by David Chang.

Founded in Milan in 1991 by style visionary and former fashion editor Carla Sozzani, 10 Corso Como pioneered a new retail model: the union of culture and commerce. With its blend of fashion, cuisine, art, music, design and lifestyle, 10 Corso Como created a new retail vocabulary — living an experience at the core of its philosophy. Celebrating its 25-year anniversary this month, the brand has developed a loyal global following that visits its locations in Milan, Seoul, Shanghai and Beijing. 10 Corso Como New York will be located in the historic area of the Seaport District and contain approximately 13,000 square feet that will be designed by American artist Kris Ruhs.

“As a European, I am very excited to see 10 Corso Como come to the place where New York City was born. The Seaport District’s history of international commerce and innovation is inspiring. I am looking forward to creating an extraordinary destination in such a unique neighborhood where the interests of the community are a focus for growth,” said Carla Sozzani, Founder of 10 Corso Como.

“Bringing such an important and influential brand in the creative and fashion sectors to the Seaport District will be a tremendous addition to New York City,” said David R. Weinreb, Chief Executive Officer of The Howard Hughes Corporation. “Given the Seaport District’s history as the city’s birthplace of innovation, we have been sharply focused on curating cutting-edge experiences across food, entertainment, fashion and culture. 10 Corso Como is a consummate example of our vision for the Seaport District.”

Fashion Institute Of Technology Announces Partnership With The Seaport Culture District

706_14-08-2016_3902

Earlier this week, The Howard Hughes Corporation announced a partnership with the Fashion Institute of Technology as part of the Seaport Culture District.

Now open at 117 Beekman Street and running through Sept. 30, FIT will showcase the work of the Urban Studio, an artist collective of students and alumni of the Fine Arts Department. The exhibition title “#wip” is a popular Instagram hashtag used by artists meaning “work in progress.” As social media influences culture, sharing on these platforms becomes an integral part of the creative process. As artists invest time experimenting with materials and content, one idea leads to the next. The documentation of these various stages of work permits an intimate view of moments that were traditionally solitary. The artwork on display ranges from drawing, printmaking, sculpture and painting to video and fiber art. The Instagram account, @fineartsfit, will demonstrate that the show is indeed a work in-progress.

“We are honored to partner with a reputable organization like FIT to continue growing the Culture District program and make the Seaport an anchor for art, design, fashion and culture in Lower Manhattan,” said Phillip St. Pierre, Senior General Manager of the Seaport District for The Howard Hughes Corporation.

As redevelopment of the neighborhood progresses, The Howard Hughes Corporation will curate a number of installations and activations as a glimpse into the future transformation of the district. These include fashion pop-up Seaport Studios and the only Smorgasburg outpost in Lower Manhattan, open seven days a week. The reinvigorated Seaport will include the ultimate cinematic experience with iPic Theaters opening a movie and dinner theater in the Fulton Market Building, a new restaurant concept from the Momofuku Group at Pier 17, a 2,500-square-foot restaurant by fast-casual, vegan hotspot by CHLOE., and a partnership with acclaimed chef and restaurateur Jean-Georges Vongerichten in a 40,000 square foot food market in the restored Tin Building, and a seafood concept in Pier 17. Popular independent New York bookseller McNally Jackson Books and Amsterdam fashion retailer Scotch & Soda will also open on the cobblestoned streets of Schermerhorn Row.

The Design Market, an innovative retail installation occupying the ground level of the Seaport Studios at 19 Fulton Street, will also remain open through the end of the year. The market offers a carefully curated selection of design objects including furniture, lighting, accessories, artwork and other merchandise. The Market features a selection of original home accessories, decorative gifts, stationary and jewelry curated by WantedDesign.

Development: Downtown’s New Diversity

World Trade Center, Silverstein Properties

THE INFLUX OF NEW BUSINESSES AND FAMILIES HAS LED TO EXCITING NEW DEVELOPMENTS

By Luis Vazquez

Just a little more than a year ago, newspaper accounts were claiming that the growth of Downtown had been derailed by Superstorm Sandy. Now look how far we’ve come.

New industries have been pouring into Lower Manhattan, diversifying the commercial landscape and bringing more people looking for residential opportunities.

Long gone are the days when Downtown was dominated by the financial industry and the sidewalks were rolled up at 5:00 p.m. after the final call of the day. New businesses like Condé Nast, Splashlight Studios, AMI and BMI have brought a vibrant, young and family-focused workforce with them. The Fulton Center subway hub will open next summer as the city’s third largest train station after Penn and Grand Central Stations, serving 300,000 people daily.

All have helped to change the face of Lower Manhattan into a fully realized community.

“The Financial District and Lower Manhattan are in the midst of an exciting transformation period that will improve daily life for the growing number of residents, visitors and all New Yorkers,” says a spokesman for the Howard Hughes Corporation, which is in the midst of its own mixed-used redevelopment of the South Street Seaport with retail, hotel and condo facilities.

As a result, new construction is flourishing on a wide variety of projects that are as diverse as the people they are intended to serve. Just months ago, the doors swung open for the first time at 4 World Trade Center, and the soaring new 1 World Trade is scheduled to do the same next year.

New Diversity is a Development article in DOWNTOWN’s Spring 2014 edition. If you would like to continue reading the whole article, you can find it in our latest issue on newsstands now!
