Walking Into Health: New Years Resolution

By: Adam Que, a fitness trainer, practitioner, former MMA fighter, and writer

Waking up late in the morning has its consequences. You can either skip your whole hygiene routine, devour anything in sight because you know it would provide you with energy, or throw on clothes that you know should be in the dirty laundry bag. Following by barging out of your apartment to be on a shoulder to shoulder status with other New Yorkers on the street or at the subway station.

I’m sure most of you have experienced all of the above. Of course, walking was most likely a big part of the problem since folks are taking Ubers, Lyfts, and cabs to their destinations nowadays. With this rush of stress and the bumps people are facing in life, how could anyone find walking beneficial? Well, it’s no coincidence Walking and Wellness both start with W.

Here are some key benefits of walking:

Prevents Diseases:

According to a review on the C3 Collaborating for Health, walking is an effective way to prevent or reduce the risk of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Helps With Living Longer and Weight Loss:

Walking is also important for the longevity of life. In the same review, there was a case study on the Global Corporate Challenge that recorded 54% of participants who had high blood pressure showed low risk by the end of a 12-week walking challenge. As well as an increase of energy by 71% and a drop of 10% body fat on average for those who had body fat loss. Another case study recorded that 94% of the walkers part of the Heart Foundation Walking group (HFW), the largest free community-based walking group in Australia said, “HFW was essential for their physical well-being.”

Mental Health:

Besides the physical benefits of walking, I mainly believe it is amazing for mental health. Dr. Lars Madsen of The MindShift Foundation said, “It increases relaxation and can be equivalent to a sleeping pill, even for people with insomnia.” Walking also reduces stress, anxiety, improves cognitive function and can lift one’s spirit instantly, especially when doing it with friends or loved ones.

So besides that gruelly commute, try to incorporate 15 to 30-minute walks throughout your week. Whether you missed a workout, your routine is discombobulated or you feel you’ve been out of whack due to the holidays kicking your butt, get to walking. If you find yourself walking in Downtown Manhattan locations like the Jerry Driscoll Walk, SoHo’s side streets, along The Highline or through Battery Park, take the time to envision a positive perspective and enjoy yourself.

Get to stepping strongly into 2020 to start that first quarter on a healthy foot.

Creatives at Johannes Leonardo & GDSNY launch #WallThatUnites in New York

JL_Wall_ChelseaHL_2292-min

A multicultural group of creatives and producers at award-winning New York-based creative agency Johannes Leonardo has teamed up with internationaldesign and real estate development firm GDSNY to spearhead a global art project born out of reaction to the current divisive politics surrounding immigration. The project, Wall That Unites, utilizes empty walls on and within highly-visible and strategically placed real estate as a display channel for positive messages of unity. The first wall launched on President’s Day, Feb, 20, in West Chelsea on the Highline Park, at 253 10th Avenue.

Wall That Unites is a global art project for the people, by the people. Its aim is to galvanize artists and people to create art on walls across the world. These walls will then be joined together digitally with the goal of besting the proposed length of the Mexico border wall—over 1900 miles. The wall will become a symbol of people coming together to show the power of unity.

“Recently, the word ‘wall’ has become a symbol for division, hostility and disillusionment,” said Johannes Leonardo co-founder Jan Jacobs. “We’ll do our part to prevent that from happening. We’re going to create our own wall and symbol. Political walls divide people. Ours will unite them.”

“GDSNY has a history of installing architectural-scale artworks and using its buildings as canvases for artists to affect culture for social good, so we are proud to provide the inaugural wall for this project,” said GDSNY founder and CEO Michael Kirchmann.

Johannes Leonardo and GDSNY will spearhead the project’s rollout, which includes more installations in New York in the coming weeks, including collaborations by world-renowned visual and performing artists.

“We hope they will create powerful and emotive work that represents unity and acceptance,” said Jacobs. “As a group of creatives, this is our way of attempting to spread positive messages of hope and unity in a time of turmoil. Our hope is that these first few walls are just the beginning of a much bigger story which will unfold day-by-day, wall-by-wall.”

Fridababy CEO Chelsea Hirschhorn’s restaurant picks for Downtown Magazine

Fridababy's Chelsea Hirschhorn
Fridababy’s Chelsea Hirschhorn

Focused on innovation, Fridababy aims to provide parents with the tools to simply and efficiently care for their babies. Since CEO Chelsea Hirschhorn joined Fridababy in 2014, the company has expanded into a 15,000 square foot facility. That growth has led to Fridababy’s geographic presence expanding from 5,000 doors to over 25,000 doors across North America. In turn, accolades have come from NBC’s Today (“Stuff We Love”), BuzzFeed (“47 Parenting Products That’ll Make Your Life Easier”), and Vogue (“The Ultimate Baby Registry Master List”) alike.

Prior to taking over Fridababy, Chelsea was a New York City-based bankruptcy attorney at Weil Gotshal & Manges, in addition to a role as Director of Ancillary Revenue for the Miami Marlins. Her J.D. was earned from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. In turn, Downtown asked “the Baby-Gadget Guru” — a mother of two — for some New York restaurant recommendations.

Fridababy can be visited at www.fridababy.com, while Chelsea and the brand can both be followed on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.

1) Babbo:

For the pasta tasting menu with a seat at the high top tables in the front, catching up with friends.

2) Chelsea Market:

After a session with the boys at the Chelsea Piers driving range or carousel, we walk over for lunch then stroll the Highline with our dessert in-hand.

3) La Esquina:

For very sentimental reasons — it was where my husband and I went on our very first date. It was pouring rain and the taxi pulled up to the corner and I looked at him like, “Are we really eating tacos in the window?” I’ve since learned to trust him implicitly!

4) Via Quadronno:

On the corner of 73rd & Madison, where I spent a lot of time escaping the downtown grind during law school; my parents were on 73rd between Park and Lex. Truly a more perfect cappuccino does not exist.

5) Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle:

A classic New York City vibe, and somewhere we always stop for a drink and music session pre or post-dinner.

Lego Heading to the Highline

2502910471_dbcb61eb35_z

Many children play with Lego to either pass time at the doctors office, or to build a sculpture of some sort in their rooms at home. Either way, it is a wonderful toy for parents to buy for their children because it keeps their minds busy. But Lego isn’t just for children; they can be for people at any age. People love to create objects and different sculptures using Lego, and now it has become quite easy for anyone to get their hands on them to create whatever one desires to create. A Danish artist by the name of Olafur Eliasson has sprinkled The High Line with two tons of (which amounts to about two million) white Lego bricks, for everyone to play with.

Not only can the public enjoy the Lego bricks, but a set amount of them have been given to ten architecture firms so each can be challenged to build their own Lego buildings . This will be a challenge to many architects because of the limited amount of bricks each architect can receive, as well as the fact that they are very constricted.

The goal of these white bricks being spread out at The High Line is for people to have fun and be challenged. If anyone would like to play with them, bring family members and friends to The High Line at the West 30th Street entrance any day from now until September 30 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
