Downtown Highlights: Tea and Sympathy A bit of British New York City

We’re sympathetic to those who have not been here for a proper British Tea. We had the pleasure of experiencing a traditional British comfort food restaurant, appropriately named Tea and Sympathy. There are basically two types: “low” tea and “high” tea.

Scone with Raspberry jam and clotted cream

Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford and a dear friend of Queen Victoria, can be accredited with introducing the concept of “afternoon” or “low” tea to upper-class households. Her butler at her request, to bring only tea, bread, butter, perhaps even a few scones to her chambers around 5 pm, the time of day when we all feel slightly peckish, but not ready for a full meal. Eventually, the Duchess, enjoyed this on a daily basis, to the point where she invited her friends, essentially creating a new social ritual.

High Tea, the origins of afternoon tea show clearly it was the preserve of the rich in the 19th century. For workers in the newly industrialized Britain, tea time had to wait until after work. By that hour, tea was generally served with heartier dishes, such as meat, fish, egg dishes, substantially more than just tea and cakes. Workers needed sustenance after a hard day of labor, this meal is more often hot and filling, accompanied by a pot of good, strong tea to revive them from a day’s work.

No need to travel all the way to London for this authentic British ritual, Tea and Sympathy serves classic dishes including Scones with Clotted Cream, Welsh Rarebit, Bangers, and Mash, Sunday Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, and more.

We had the sheer pleasure of pairing our delights with the UK’s choice for sparkling wine from Chapel Down exclusive only to Tea and Sympathy here in New York.

After years of being served at Buckingham Palace (including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding), Chapel Down was introduced to NYC with a partnership with the quintessential British restaurant Tea & Sympathy in Greenwich Village.

Tea & Sympathy has been serving traditional British comfort food to the West Village since 1990. Their traditional menu offers classic British favorites including Afternoon Tea, Bangers and Mash, and even the beloved Shepherd’s Pie. Now customers can pair the experience with a bottle of either Chapel Down’s rose or Bacchus-based Brut sparkling wine.

Tea & Sympathy opened its doors in 1990 and has been a staple for Brits living in the US and us American’s who truly love all the UK’s favorite foods. Next door you can find A Salt & Battery one of the best fish and chips shops in all of NYC!

Afternoon Tea

High Tea

In this episode, Sam enjoys a superb British Afternoon Tea. This meal came on a two-tier platter with tea sandwiches including egg salad, chicken salad, and tuna salad sandwiches.

These sandwiches were delicious, comforting, and light.

Sandwiches the British way

This lunch also included various cakes and baked goods like the sticky toffee pudding cupcake and scones with clotted cream. We also had the pleasure of trying Tea and Sympathy’s signature black tea. It was delicious!

Gluten-Free Lunch with Tea

Marley tried the Absolutely Fabulous Salad, one of the gluten-free lunch options at Tea and Sympathy This mixed green salad is complete with chicken, avocado, a hard-boiled egg, bacon, tomatoes, and a delicious vinaigrette dressing.

GF Salad with Chicken, Egg, and Bacon

Tea and Sympathy are currently searching for a new place to purchase gluten-free bread from. They’re hoping to offer a gluten-free Afternoon Tea option soon!

Visiting Tea and Sympathy felt like visiting London. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss. When you visit, be sure to check out the adorable shop next door that sells British treats, teapots, and more.

Downtown Highlights: Mochidoki – Soft and Sweet

Colorful, soft, and sweet; there isn’t a treat quite like mochi!

This time on Downtown Highlights we visited Mochidoki. Mochidoki serves delicious mochi. Mochi is ice cream wrapped in rice flour dough. All mochi at Mochidoki is gluten-free, with vegan options too.

While visiting, we had the pleasure of interviewing Christopher Wong, the co-founder of Mochidoki. Christopher explained that he has many fond memories of mochi. Some of his earlier memories were from his childhood in Hong Kong when he would eat mochi with his grandmother after school. This deep love for mochi inspired Christopher to open Mochidoki.

One of the most challenging things about making mochi is getting the dough to remain soft while the ice cream is frozen. Christopher explained “we managed to find a way so that the mochi stays nice and soft even though it’s frozen. We spent a lot of time on developing.” The process was perfected so that the mochi is absolutely flawless when taken out of the freezer: the dough is soft while the ice cream remains just the right consistency and firmness that ice cream should be.

This summer, Mochidoki’s seasonal flavors are Cake Batter and Turmeric Hot Honey. We were intrigued by both flavors and sampled the Turmeric Hot Honey flavor for this episode. It was absolutely delicious, with the right amount of sweet and spicy. If you are looking for a sweet treat in Downtown Manhattan this summer, we highly recommend swinging by Mochidoki.

US Athletes Should Jump on the Craze of Tea as a Sports Drink

In the United States, there are two go-to drinks to get a boost-

coffee and sports drinks. Major league sports are feature players of the highest level, so athletes will often turn to a sports drink like Gatorade or coffee to get the extra boost needed to train harder or keep their level of play at the highest possible level.

However, there is a craze sweeping across other huge sports in the world that offers a far superior way for athletes to get a boost, and it’s been in the US for decades. The drinking of tea is viewed as an activity for the health-nut in America, and yet it’s seldom used as a part of an athlete’s diet.

Pro athletes around the world feature certain types of tea as a staple of their diet, and they’re reaping the benefits of doing so.

The benefits of tea over coffee and sports drinks

There’s no doubt that coffee and electrolyte-filled sports drinks give you a boost in the morning, throughout the day, while training, and during games. Caffeine, which is in abundance in both drinks, is one of the most-used and trusted performance-enhancing substances known to sports stars. However, coffee and especially sports drinks are also filled with elements that negatively impact your body, including sugar, additives, and, of course, excessive amounts of caffeine.

Tea, on the other hand, is low in sugar and lower in caffeine, but the key is that is has enough of the latter substance to provide the benefits without the drawbacks – such as sleeplessness, addiction, and crashes. The moderate amount of caffeine is plenty to give athletes a boost and can be wildly beneficial as it gives a subtle kick, keeps you hydrated, and it has also been found to increase endurance capacity.

Being a professional athlete in the United States is a big deal, with people all over the country watching and betting on outcomes at WSN for the major leagues of football, hockey, soccer, baseball, and basketball. As such, every sports star has to perform at their highest level on every occasion. To do that, they need to drink the best drinks, with tea proving to be a much better option than the current standard.

Athletes all over the world are benefitting from drinking tea

When thinking of potential tea-drinking athletes, of course, the mind immediately wanders to the English. Mug, tea bag, a bit of sugar, hot water, tea bag out, and then a splash of milk: it’s a simple and often-turned-to drink in Great Britain for a nice boost, but athletes have stepped up their tea game by drinking mate (pronounced mah-teh).

Mate has already impressed a great number of soccer players, with England and Tottenham Hotspur stars Eric Dier, Danny Rose, and Dele Alli guzzling up this infusion. The English are particularly susceptible to the allures of tea, but the traditional South American drink has spread like wildfire across the global soccer scene. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero, Paul Pogba, Neymar, Antoine Griezmann, Gonzalo Higuain, Douglas Costa, and Rodrigo Bentancur all incorporate mate into their diet.

Being heavily reliant on stamina and being at the peak level of performance for 90 minutes twice a week, it’s easy to understand why soccer players would turn to tea for its health and performance benefits. But it’s not just soccer stars who are turning to tea, with big wave surfer Mark Healey also using mate to give him the early morning boost that he needs.

Tea offers the benefits of coffee or sports drinks but without all of the pitfalls. So, perhaps it’s time that more US-based athletes started to switch out that morning coffee for a cup of tea.

1) Wine & Whiskey NYC

Recently launched in the New York market, Wine & Whiskey carries an annual subscription fee of $175. 2) The Sweater Store by Ragstock

Ragstock is a Minneapolis-based clothing chain, but fortunately, it sells its goods online and will ship internationally. Ugly Christmas sweaters are one of Ragstock’s specialties, and the company has over 25,000 vintage sweaters in-stock; some are priced near the $200 mark. 3) Allen Brothers

Allen Brothers meat is a staple of Halls Chophouse, Gallagher’s Steakhouse, Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood, and the Hillstone Restaurant Group. The company, which started in 1893, is currently running 12 days of exclusive offers; day 8 was 20% off on 4 x 9 oz. bacon wrapped filets. Surprisingly affordable when considering how top-notch Allen Brothers is known to be; subscription gift plans, including the Burger Of The Month plan, are now available.

4) Jacques Torres Chocolate

5) Marble & Wood Hexagon Cheese Board from Simon Pearce

I have never seen a cheese board this beautiful, and I have never seen a cheese board this practical. Part wood and part marble, it also acts as a serving tray. On top of that, it was handcrafted and produced sustainably.

6) Earmuff Headphones from Free People

In a New York City winter, you need to keep your head warm, but odds are that also want to listen some music while outside. Instead of wearing earbuds under a wool cap, this bass-heavy item from Free People kills two birds with one stone, as headphones are built into earmuffs. Compatible with most smartphones — it has a standard headphone jack — and one size fits all. The earmuffs come in black and grey and, for those concerned, the fur is faux.

7) To Go Tea Steeping Mug from Free People

Another winner available via Free People, the To Go Tea Steeping Mug is handmade in the U.S., as produced by Victoria Smith Ceramics. It features a tea strainer and lid, making it easy for tea on-the-go. Beyond its functionality, its design is also commendable, both handpainted and glazed.

Q&A with The Eddy & Wallflower’s expert bartenders

The Wallflower's bar menu
Selections from Wallflower’s bar menu

The Eddy and Wallflower — sister restaurants in Greenwich Village — both recently launched new cocktail hours and bar menus. Wallflower now serves its “Punch, Classics & The Burger” menu daily from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, while The Eddy’s “Classic Cocktail Hour” launched on Oct. 21 with the same hours. Both The Eddy (located in the East Village) and Wallflower (located in the West Village) are also open on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Eddy chef Brendan McHale has an $85 five-course tasting menu planned for Christmas Eve and a $95 six-course tasting menu for New Year’s Eve, while Ezra Lewis at Wallflower has an $85 five-course meal ready for Christmas and an $80 four-course on New Year’s.

Downtown had the pleasure of speaking with the head bartenders of both The Eddy and Wallflower. James Lomardino spoke on behalf of Wallflower. Luis Hernandez represented The Eddy. Both James and Luis offered up great answers that offered insight into life as a craft-conscious bartender, while also sharing some recommendations inside and outside of their establishments.

More info on The Eddy can be found at www.theeddynyc.com, while all things Wallflower are online at www.wallflowernyc.com.

Wallflower head bartender James Lombardino
Wallflower’s James Lombardino

How would you describe your establishment to someone who hasn’t yet been there?

James Lomardino: Wallflower wears its name well. It’s the secret spot that has been there all along, waiting for you to discover it. We serve French-American fare alongside a carefully curated wine list and a cocktail program that is interesting and far from pretentious. We have a small, succinct menu and our chef, sommelier and myself work hard to ensure every inch of our tiny space is utilized to an extreme degree. Come for cocktails at the bar before dinner — no matter what you like to drink, there will be something exciting for you to try.

Luis Hernandez: We are a restaurant, from cocktail bar to kitchen, that focuses on the freshness of product and seasonality.

What is your favorite item on the menu there?

JL: Cocktail-wise, I’m really excited about the Root Down. It’s a killer drink at Wallflower — Linie Aquavit and fresh carrot juice work together beautifully in this drink. Food-wise, the tasting menu is where it’s at; we call it, Let Us Cook For You. Let the kitchen send out dishes to you the way they would a good friend or other industry professional. Sit back, relax and let the food roll out. They do not mess around!

LH: From the kitchen, it has to be the chicken liver pate with miche toast and Concord grape. It’s a very old-school preparation and an example of what a traditional pate is.

Any specials or events coming up there?

JL: We have recently started a cocktail and bar food menu from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM for our neighborhood regulars and the after work crowd. We offer French 75s, Sidecars, and a punch that our bartenders create for the day. We have definitely made some new fans of the Sidecar.

LH: We just started a new happy hour menu that focuses on classic cocktails and some modifications. We also make it a focus to show the versatility of certain spirit categories and how they fit into classics and out of them as well.

What do you like most about your job?

JL: Honestly, just making people have a relaxed, good time. I am also a person who enjoys going out to bars and restaurants, so I work largely with empathy and intuition. I think, “What would I want my experience to be like?” Then I aim for that.

LH: I have the ability to create, teach, learn, and innovate at this bar. It’s great to have the chance to match the cocktails to the food and ensure harmony between the two. Having a kitchen that works at such a high seasonal level makes it easy for me to be seasonal as well and allows for imagination through the restriction of seasonality.

Cocktail Hour selections from The Eddy

What is your drink of choice?

JL: It depends on the time of day! I enjoy most spirits, beer and wine, and the more I taste and try new things, the more I realize there is a time and place for everything. With that being said, if you put some sort of Rum Swizzle in front of me, I’ll be thrilled.

LH: I am not drinking alcohol anymore, so it’s tea. The versatility of tea cannot be understated. It’s an ancient drink that I hope will garner more adoration in Western culture.

Your establishment aside, what is your favorite restaurant in New York?

JL: This is a tough one. As New Yorkers we have an infinite number of options. It’s starting to get cold here, so there is nothing more soothing than a big bowl of ramen from Chuko.

LH: Without a doubt it has to be Raku, right next to us. All the food is great without any pretension, delicious, fast, warming and affordable. Definitely worth a visit.

What is the first bar or restaurant you ever held a job at?

JL: Rue B., many years ago in Alphabet City in New York. Cocktails there may have not been ground-breaking at the time, but they gave me the chance to learn how to work in a busy and lively environment.

LH: Ciro and Sal’s in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It’s as old-school as it gets, looks like an old Italian cellar — intimate and great for a date!

When not busy with work, how do you like to spend your free time?

JL: All summer long, I ride my bike down to Coney Island to watch the Brooklyn Cyclones play. It’s a blast.

LH: The little time I have off I always spend with my wife. We like to go out to eat, go to museums or anything else interesting in the city. If I am not out with my wife, I am either playing basketball or reading comic books and manga.

Enrich Your Life With DAVIDsTEA

steeper
Steeper, a device to easily brew hot or cold tea

During the summer, it gets hot and all we ever think about is ice cream, ice cream and more ice cream. But another way to cool off during the summer (and heat up during the winter) is tea! This company has been around for a while now, and became so popular so quickly that it has expanded dramatically over the past few years. With 150 stores located in Canada and United States, there is no way one can miss this fabulous tea store; DAVIDsTEA.

DAVIDsTEA opened in 2008 in Canada and it quickly gained popularity because of the unique teas that are sold at each store. Customers can purchase teas from different categories like herbal tea, iced tea or oolong tea. Although there are 150 stores in the countries of Canada and United States, there are only 25 locations in the U.S. and three in Manhattan. Luckily enough there is one in lower Manhattan right on Bleecker Street nestled between Jones street and Cornelia street. So what makes DAVIDsTEA so special?

The first thing that everyone would notice once they step inside a store is the smell of all the displayed teas. It almost smells like a perfume shop, but more colorful and bubbly. The second thing a customer will notice is the display of teas on the wall. A select few stores have each tea sectioned off in categories which makes it easier for customers to tell which tea is organic, white, herbal, or caffeine free.

tea stock

Erika Santillana, the district brand manager for all DAVIDsTEA stores located in New York, comments that “what David [Segal, who is the co-founder of DAVIDsTEA] wants is to make tea fun and accessible to everyone . .. there is obviously such a variety [and] so much fun you can have with [tea].”

Erika continues to say “every season, we have a new collection that comes out, just like fashion we have the fall collection, the winter collection, the summer collection and the spring collection.” Currently the summer collection includes the delicious flavors of ‘mango fruit punch,’ ‘black cherry,’ and ‘banana split’. There are also monthly flavors to enjoy; the  July flavor of the month is ‘electric lemonade.’ This lemonade-flavored tea includes the ingredients of lemon, berries and yerba mate.

When customers visit the store, they can have the chance to smell whatever flavor of tea they wish to smell. “How is this possible?” one may ask. Each tea is put into a container and has a small cup-like section that is filled with the un-brewed tea. With these sniffers, customers are allowed to smell and feel the tea before buying it loose, hot or cold.

If customers would like to make tea at home, they can in one of two ways; by steeping, or with a matcha maker. “The steeper is one of our popular products,” comments Erika, “and it is used to make latte and cold tea . . .the matcha maker makes it easier to make matcha tea on the go.” There is also an infuser inside the matcha maker which allows one to make hot tea.

Not only does DAVIDsTEA sell tea, steepers and matcha makers, but they also sell bottles (otherwise known as DAVIDsTEA travel mugs)  and containers for tea. With the concern about the environment and toxins and chemicals that can destroy the environment, DAVIDsTEA helps promote eco-friendliness by selling travel mugs. When a customer buys a travel mug between June 3 and August 23 they can buy the tea of the day for $1.00 or any other tea for $2.00.

So any tea lovers that have not tried a tea from DAVIDsTEA are missing out. With all the wonderful, colorful teas in stock, there is no way that one can past by the store without stepping in. Stay cool this blazing summer with DAVIDsTEA!chai co co
