Grubhub’s Kaitlyn Carl & “Kinky Boots” actress Blair Goldberg on Seamless’ “How New York Eats” campaign

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsBr4epEOOc

In late 2016, Seamless unveiled an interesting study as part of its “How New York Eats” campaign. The company compared the ordering habits of its regular customers versus that of Broadway casts, including Kinky Boots, The Color Purple, Hamilton, Waitress, and The Book Of Mormon. The cast of Kinky Boots, for example, ordered 847% more shrimp tacos, 795% more croissants, 324% more shrimp tempura rolls, and 286% more vegetable dumplings than the rest of New York City.

Downtown had the pleasure of conducting Q&A with both Kaitlyn Carl, Grubhub’s media relations and trends specialist, and Kinky Boots cast member Blair Goldberg. The interviews were conducted prior to Kinky Boots attracting even more A-List stars to its show, including Taylor Swift and Kevin Costner. Grubhub — which merged with Seamless in 2013 — can of course be visited online at www.grubhub.com, while Kinky Boots is on the web at www.kinkybootsthemusical.com.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmDh025Ffuc&feature=youtu.be

Where did the idea for this survey come from?

Kaitlyn Carl: Seamless launched its “How New York Eats” campaign a few months ago, which highlights how different neighborhoods choose from their local favorites that we have to offer. With the Theater District being located in the heart of Manhattan , we wanted to see how exactly how theater companies and their casts fuel themselves through the day.

Were any of the results especially surprising for you?

Kaitlyn Carl: Seeing the variety of foods across multiple shows was a pleasant surprise! It makes you think if perhaps each show’s demands, ranging from rehearsal schedule to genre, could give different cravings per cast. The most ordered foods at each theater ranged from shrimp tacos to sushi to grilled cheese sandwiches — representative of the diversity among casts.

The Grubhub survey said that your cast orders shrimp tacos 847% more than the rest of New York City. Is there a particular spot that you favor for tacos?

Blair Goldberg: Absolutely. You all MUST check out Otto’s Tacos — 705 9th Avenue — for some of the most delicious, cheap tacos you’ll ever have! My favorite is the Carne Asada Tacos. And the Churros? TO DIE FOR! Heaven!

What about for fried chicken sandwiches? Grubhub’s survey said that your cast orders those 226% more than the rest of New York City.

Blair Goldberg: I dig Lenwich — formerly known as Lenny’s — for sandwiches. Awesome and quick delivery, and a million options to choose from!

Are you proud of Grubhub’s survey results? Has anyone at your shows talked about the survey to you?

Blair Goldberg: Yes! We were actually all buzzing about it backstage when the survey came out! We LOVE to eat over at Kinky Boots, and you will consistently hear our stage doorman over the loudspeaker all throughout the show saying that more food delivery has arrived every night! Besides performing, I’d say eating is certainly my other passion. I’m hardcore.

Do you have a favorite restaurant on Grubhub?

Blair Goldberg: At work, it would have to be Schmackary’s, best cookies in the world. At home — FiDi, woohoo Downtown! — it would have to be Harry’s Italian.

Kaitlyn Carl: When I’m visiting our New York office, my favorite lunch is from Chop’t Salad. Always arriving quickly, their customer craft salads are my go-to! Another midtown favorite of mine is Alidoro. Their subs offer fresh ingredients, hand-sliced meats and cheeses and is one of the best sandwiches I’ve had while visiting New York.

Your show recently added Todrick Hall to the cast. Had you been familiar with his work before he was cast?

Blair Goldberg: Absolutely. Todrick is incredible and his viral videos are on another level. They are definitely worth checking out! As a huge Taylor Swift fan, my favorite is his “4 Taylor” video. Todrick has been nothing but gracious and wonderful to work with! We are so happy to have him as a member of our Kinky family.

Kinky Boots attracts a lot of celebrities. Who was the last visitor that had you starstruck?

Blair Goldberg: Katie Holmes! Or RuPaul! Both amazing!

Do you have a favorite moment within the Kinky Boots show?

Blair Goldberg: Yes! “Everybody Say Yeah” is our Act I finale, and it’s one of most phenomenally staged numbers I’ve ever been lucky enough to watch, let alone be a part of. I love looking at the audiences faces when we are performing that number. They usually have the biggest smiles plastered on their faces! I also love the finale (“Raise You Up”) because it is the heart of our show, and is all about the message to, “Just be who you wanna be.” It’s such an important message about learning to love and accept yourself and I consider it an honor to sing every night.

What’s coming up for Seamless in the New York area? Any new restaurants? Promotions?

Kaitlyn Carl: Seamless is constantly adding more local options for New Yorkers to choose from. For example, we just brought on Ivan Ramen and Westville, which are favorites amongst New Yorkers. Additionally, we recently just launched Gift Cards. Now it is easier than ever to give the gift of Seamless with friends and family by going to Seamless.com/giftcards.

Blair Goldberg

Aside from Kinky Boots, how do you like to spend your free time?

Blair Goldberg: I spend lots of time in the Downtown area where I live with my husband and one-year old daughter, Lyla. We love exploring Manhattan together, especially now that she’s at such a fun age! Our neighborhood is so wonderful for families-we love having the Seaport right across the street!

Kaitlyn Carl: Food has always been a passion of mine, and whenever I have free time, I love to explore different neighborhoods and their unique restaurants. With Singaporean roots, I’m on a mission to find the most authentic Hainanese chicken rice in town. I will also gladly accept suggestions for the next time I am in New York!

Kaitlyn, do you often get to catch live events? Do you have tickets to any upcoming concerts or plays?

Kaitlyn Carl: Because I am based out of Chicago, most of my time in New York is spent working in our Midtown office. However, every time I do come to town I make sure I explore the city as best as I can. Last time I was in town, I visited Central Park and Lincoln Center and consumed some of the best food I have ever had in Chinatown and Williamsburg. I am a huge fan of the theater though! I was able to get my hands on a pair of Hamilton tickets for the Chicago show and am counting down the days until I go.

Finally, any last words for the kids?

Kaitlyn Carl: We were delighted to see that eating healthy was a priority among all casts — based on sheer volume, we found that the Theater District turns to Seamless for salads and protein-centric dishes. It’s representative of the fact that we have everything on the platform to fit every craving, whether it be something to fuel you for a busy rehearsal schedule, or something for your a cheat day, like a delicious cheesesteak from Shorty’s.

Blair Goldberg: Come check us out at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre! And bring some tacos, please! We’re hungry!

Downtown visits ToniK Productions’ Tonya Lewis Lee & Nikki Silver on the set of “Monster”

Nikki Silver & Tonya Lewis Lee
Nikki Silver & Tonya Lewis Lee

Formed by award-winning producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver, the New York City-based ToniK Productions creates, develops and produces films and television programming. ToniK’s 2013 production The Watsons Go To Birmingham – 1963 was adapted from the novel in partnership with Walden Media, Hallmark, Walmart, and Proctor & Gamble. 2014’s The Giver, as adapted from the Lois Lowry novel, starred Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes, and Taylor Swift. Tonya and Nikki have well over two decades of combined experience as producers and five Emmy Awards among them.

Currently on the slate for ToniK is the film Monster, as adapted from the Walter Dean Myers novel. The cast of Monster — as co-produced with Bron Studios and Mike Jackson of John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Company — includes A$AP Rocky, Nas, Jennifer Hudson, Jeffrey Wright and John David Washington. The film, with a script written by Colen C. Wiley and Janece Shaffer, will be the feature directorial debut of Rihanna collaborator Anthony MandlerMonster, now in post-production, is set for a 2017 release.

Downtown visited Tonya and Nikki on-set while filming at Brooklyn’s Cinema World Studios. More on Monster can be found at www.tonikproductions.com, while both Tonya and Nikki can both be followed on Twitter. More on Tonya can also be found on Healthy You Now, a site about women’s health and wellness which she founded in 2007.

Nikki_4

How did you two become involved with this production?

Nikki Silver: Monster is a book that we optioned over 12 years ago. It was given to us by a development executive and really once I read it, it was just sort of amazing. It told such a universal tale but a very poignant tale, an important tale. It is a social justice piece, it is a piece about our criminal justice system. It’s also a piece about a 17-year old boy, both of which Tonya and I have experienced is probably the better way to say it, and the choices teenagers make and how that can change your life especially if you’re urban black child from Harlem. And that’s the story of Steve Harmon. Tonya and I became partners at about the same time that book was auctioned, and we have been steadily moving this ball up the hill putting all the pieces together to get the film done.

You said 12 years. So does that mean that there were a few runs where it looked like it was going to happen and it didn’t happen.

Tonya Lewis Lee: Well, I would say it took us a while to find the right partners in every which way. So I think initially we thought about finding a financial partner to come onboard to actually make the movie, but then we took a step back and realized we needed to develop it. So we needed the script. So we took some time to find a partner to help us develop a script and it took us some time to find the right writer. I think we probably spent a good five years trying to get a really great script, which ultimately we did, but you know it does take time. Once we had the script, we had to take it around and try to find the financing for the film, and that took another couple of years to do so. It takes time, and it takes time to do it right. We did have a couple of times when we were really close but whatever it was it wasn’t right for us.

NS: Walter Dean Myers wrote the book, one of the most prolific and adult authors of our generation. Walter passed away sadly two years ago, but he knew that we had the rights, and this is sort of his most beloved novel. I think that Tonya and I have always felt that it’s incumbent upon us to bring his vision to life properly and with respect. And so we have been very cautious about the choices that we’ve made and really feel like we’ve finally got all the pieces together…It is still extremely relevant, and in some ways at the consciousness of more so even now than it would have been 12 years ago, so all things come at the time they’re supposed to.

Nikki & Tonya on-set
Nikki & Tonya on-set

Another one of the amazing things about the movie, besides the buzz on it, is the cast that’s attached to it. It’s almost like it’s an all-star film.

NS: It is. We have an incredible ensemble on our cast, from A$AP Rocky to Nas, Jennifer Ehle, Tim Blake Nelson, Jennifer Hudson, John David Washington…

John David Washington is one of my favorite actors…

NS: And he is phenomenal, and they all are, every single one of them. Our lead, our star, Kelvin Harrison Jr., this is like really his first breakout role. He too is an amazing actor who often says he’s like in a master class working with this cast, just watching and learning from all of them. So we are so fortunate to have such a great cast, and I think that Tonya and I, we always say and we have proven time and again that with the right material you can bring the right cast. Whether it’s a smaller movie or a bigger movie, if you’re doing good material, you will find people that understand that and want to be a part of that, and that’s really what this is. We’re creating a movement with Monster and every one of the cast wants to be part of it and they’re all completely committed to their role and to the film. It’s really remarkable.

Who was the first cast member to come onboard for this film? Do you remember?

TLL: A$AP Rocky…You know I remember earlier on, I went to see Rihanna and he opened for her and he came onstage and I was like, “Who is this person?” My family was like, “He’s amazing.” And then I started paying attention and then as we got more into the development of Monster, it was just he had to be in this film. He’s from Harlem, he is of the right age and just even his music. He had to be a part of this even before we had our director on…Then Anthony [Mandler] came on, and Anthony has a relationship with him and it worked the way it was supposed to. And Rocky says he read this book in high school…so it was meant to be.

How did you two first meet?

TLL: Actually, Viacom put us together, we were at Nickelodeon. I was there, i just finished a project and I was looking for something else to do with them and Nicky came and I pitched in Miracle’s Boys. They said, “Hey, why don’t you guys work together?” I don’t know that they thought we’d still be here.

You worked in 1515 [Broadway]?

NS: Yeah…It works because we challenge each other and it works because we don’t always have the same ideas. It works because we fight and make up and learn from that, it’s a partnership in the truer sense of the word. I do think I speak for both of us in this case I think we make each other better.

Nikki_2

Do you have an accomplishment that you’re proud of so far most proud of rather with ToniK?

TLL: For me, I would say it’s the fact that we’re doing it and we’re making Monster.

NS: Right for me, in this moment right now, if you were to ask me what I’m proudest of it’s the fact that we’re here at this stage and we’re making this film that we’ve been able to get here. It was a dogfight. I just think my answer is almost the same as the last answer, I’m proud of the fact that we may remain true to our vision and that there’s just honesty about everything that we do.

So when you’re not busy with tonic what does each of you like to do with your free time as New Yorkers and all?

NS: I’m a born and bred New Yorker, I grew up in Washington Heights. I have three children and a husband. That certainly keeps me busy. A 19-year old, a 17-year old and a 13 year old. You know New York has been a character in my life my whole life and I love shooting here and doing stories about New York. It’s so much a part of who I am.

Family aside, how do you like to spend your free time?

NS: I love music, I love films I love going…There’s nothing to me better than a Saturday night with my husband and my children — if they decide not to go out and come with us — going to the movie theater, getting a big thing of popcorn and then having dinner afterwards at some local neighborhood restaurant on the Upper West Side.

Tonya_1

What about you, Tonya? You live in Brooklyn?

TLL: No, we live in Manhattan; we’ve lived in Manhattan for many years now. Yeah, I’ve just been visiting Brooklyn again and I’m amazed how the neighborhood is, it’s amazing. But for me, I would say I wear lots of different hats and I like to, I advocate for women’s health when I’m not doing film and I take it very seriously and traveling the country. I love going to different parts of the country and meeting all kinds of folks and talking about ways to make them and other families and our communities healthier. And then on the free time I get, I love to read, I like to read a lot of novels and I also like to watch a lot of television amount of movies, I watch a lot of TV, Netflix, Amazon…I love Amazon because everything that I can’t catch on a regular basis,I’m not good at DVR so I end up paying for it. (laughs)

How are you “not good at DVR?”

TLL: I should just be doing it, but the thing is, I don’t think about it, then I’m like, “Oh shoot, I didn’t do it,” and I end up buying it on Amazon. But I gotta get better, because when the bill comes… (laughs) Yeah I try to watch as much as I possibly can because I really look forward to getting into the episodic space again, I mean, we did Miracle’s Boys, which is a six-part series for Nickelodeon. I just love that medium and look forward to getting the opportunity to do more with it.

So finally, any last words for the kids?

TLL: Dream big, and they do happen. Dream big and make it happen, I would say. I’m going to say persistence. You know it’s very easy to get a lot of no’s in your life and that’s okay, because the yes’s do come and if you’re persistent, you can turn those into yeses. And be present in whatever opportunities you’re presented with, whatever it is, even if it’s something that you think doesn’t go into…

NS: I love that. Be present, and it all goes by really fast and it’s really really easy to get caught up in all of it. And we do that for ourselves, we step back every now and then because you get so caught up…and then you step back and you say, “Look where we are.” It’s amazing what we’ve created and I will say this. We love hiring young people and we’ve hired lots of young people. Sometimes they understand the gift that they’re given and sometimes they don’t. That’s why I say that, because if you’re busy trying to leapfrog over to the next, you don’t get what you’re supposed to get from the moment that you’re in and that’s one of the things I’ve seen often with young people.

“America’s Got Talent” winner Grace VanderWaal to perform at the Seaport District’s Nov. 29 Tree Lighting

Seaport Tree Lighting, 2015
Seaport Tree Lighting, 2015

16-SSS-00478 TREE LIGHTING - EventsTile_1200x8002

2016 has been a whirlwind year for singer/songwriter Grace VanderWaal. Nearly a year ago, Grace was auditioning for the NBC hit America’s Got Talent, of which she was the show’s Season 11 winner. Later this week, Grace will be releasing her debut EP, Perfectly Imperfect, through Columbia Records. And just a few days before that, Grace will be performing as part of the Seaport District’s 33rd annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 29.

In addition to a performance by Grace, this year’s Tree Lighting Ceremony — which kicks off at 6:30 PM — also features music by Vy Higginsen’s Gospel Choir of Harlem. In addition to the lighting of 60-foot Norway Spruce tree from Hinsdale, Pennsylvania, there will also be a seven-foot Chanukah menorah on display. The event, as presented by the Hallmark Channel, coincides with Giving Tuesday; the Seaport District’s Howard Hughes Corporation will be making a donation to the Peck Slip School music program as part of Giving Tuesday. More info on all things Seaport and Howard Hughes-related can be found at www.seaportdistrict.nyc.

Grace — who Simon Cowell has called “the next Taylor Swift” — caught up with Downtown for some Q&A about what’s ahead for her, Seaport District appearance included. She can be followed on Twitter via @GraceVanderWaal and otherwise visited online at www.gracevanderwaalofficial.com.

https://youtu.be/My_FR8MqWm4

What do you remember about the first time you ever performed live in New York? Where was it?

Grace VanderWaal: Before I auditioned for America’s Got Talent I did performances at a few local coffee shops around my town.

Any idea what you’ll be performing at the Seaport District tree lighting?

GVW: Yes, I’ll be performing “I Don’t Know My Name,” “Light The Sky,” and a cover of “Jingle Bell Rock”

Aside from the tree lighting event, what is coming up for you?

GVW: I’m so excited, my first EP is coming out this Friday, Dec. 2nd! And for the holidays. I am spending time with my family, which will be nice.

Do you have a favorite song on your new EP?

GVW: I LOVE “Gossip Girl!” I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

A lot of people first learned about you from America’s Got Talent. Is there something you wish more people knew about you?

GVW: I have a brother! (laughs) Love you Jakob.

When not busy with your career, how do you like to spend your free time?

GVW: Playing with my new puppy Frankenstein — Frankie, for short.

Finally, Grace, any last words for the kids?

GVW: Even if people turn you down and tell you aren’t the best, keep at it and be patient. If it’s supposed to happen, it will.

Keltie Knight on “The Insider,” hosting the “Thanksgiving Day Parade Live” on CBS & more

Keltie Knight
Keltie Knight

For many dancers, the dream is to be a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall. In the case of Keltie Knight, being a Radio City Rockette for six seasons was only the beginning of an illustrious career. Since 2012, Keltie has been an anchor for the syndicated CBS show The Insider. Keltie’s Insider duties regularly have her covering events all over the world, working the red carpets at the Grammys, the Primetime Emmys, the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, the People’s Choice Awards, and Cannes alike. Her bubbly and fun personality has also been seen in Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! and as part of the 2016 Miss USA Pageant.

This Thursday, Keltie returns to host the Thanksgiving Day Parade Live On CBS alongside Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight. Keltie spoke to Downtown about what is to be expected from this year’s parade, which will include performances by Sting and Miranda Lambert. The parade is also set to feature appearances by the casts of the Broadway musicals The Color Purple, On Your Feet! and School Of Rock.

Keltie Knight can be visited online at www.keltieknight.com. She can also be followed on Instagram and Twitter, where she is known to post fun multimedia content.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKUtO9N4OSY

You started off as a dancer. Now, you’re a TV host. How exactly did that transition happen?

Keltie Knight: Much to my teachers and choreographers’ disdain, I was the loudest, chattiest and craziest dancer ever. When social media began, I was obsessed with sharing my behind-the-scenes experiences working with huge stars like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé with my followers, and I usually got in trouble. I started a blog so people could follow my journey and it got so big that eventually the TV world took notice. There are bruises, major rejections, and some pretty epic hairstyles in between those 10 years, but here I am!

Looking back, is there a highlight from your dancing career?

KK: Taking my first little tap step on stage as a Radio City Rockette. A lifelong dream for me.

Was it always the goal to doing what you are doing now?

KK: I’ve always been a performer and I’m naturally very curious. I couldn’t have dreamed a dream THIS big, so I’m honestly shocked and still have to pinch myself daily.

How did the opportunity to host this year’s Thanksgiving Parade come about?

KK: Speaking of shock, I was totally shocked when CBS asked me last year, I am friends in real life with the longtime host Kevin Frazier, and we’ve always had amazing, natural chemistry. Last year was the highlight of my year, and to be asked back again was the ultimate compliment. Also, my husband HATES to be in front of the camera, and at the end of the parade we bring out our families, so I am really excited to see him turn all red and shy again this year!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9DAWbT6t74

Any idea who will be performing at this year’s parade? Anyone you’re especially excited to see?

KK: Well, we have Sting and Miranda Lambert— no big deal. (laughs) The fact that these major superstars want to spend their Thanksgiving with us is incredible. Do you think I can ask for an autograph? (laughs)

You’ve been part of The Insider for almost five years. What is a typical production day like for you?

KK: I wake up at 4:30 AM and head to the studio, do hair and makeup and look through the show. We film starting at 7:00 AM, and I’m usually out the door by 11:00 AM to run around Los Angeles to do various interviews. In the evenings I am often at Red Carpets, or screening upcoming movies. I work VERY hard. There is an incredible amount of research and preparation to do. I also am on a first-name basis with all the American Airlines flight attendants because I spend half of my life on the airplane to New York and back.

Do you have to travel a lot for the job?

KK: I have almost one million miles THIS YEAR alone. That girl yelling into her phone, running through the airport in sneakers — it’s me! Side note, can we all please sit down until our boarding zone is called? We are just boarding a plane, it’s not The Hunger Games, everyone!

What is your favorite part of working on The Insider?

KK: I would be lying if I didn’t say I really enjoy wearing the fancy gowns and borrowed diamonds! But, beside the material things, being in places like Cannes, France with George freakin’ Clooney one on one, knowing I am having a once in a lifetime experience, is what keeps me going.

Keltie Knight
Keltie Knight

Is there anyone you haven’t yet interviewed but still hope to?

KK: My two bucket list items: covering Paris Fashion Week, and Michelle Obama!

Do you have any upcoming projects besides The Insider and hosting the upcoming parade?

KK: Yes! This year I co-created a podcast called LadyGang with actress Becca Tobin and fashion designer Jac Vanek. We are almost one-year old, and the response has been incredible. We have launched our site www.theladygang.com, and LadyGang Emojis, and a LadyGang subscription box- trying my hand at multimedia mogul. P.S. I need a nap!

When not busy with your career, how do you like to spend your free time?

KK: My ideal day off is waking up for a late brunch with my husband, a massage, cuddling with my doggie and then watching extended marathons of Fixer Upper on HGTV.

Do you have a favorite restaurant in New York?

KK: My 100% fav in the WORLD: Paesanos in Little Italy. I’ll be eating my Thanksgiving dinner there this year with friends. It’s so small, cozy and the best food in New York City.

What about a favorite neighborhood?

KK: I’m really partial to Greenwich Village in Manhattan, because that’s where I lived in New York City. It was before it was as fancy as it is now, and I have tons of memories of spending my last $100 on BINGO night at Tortilla Flats drinking margaritas. There is so much magic in that area of the city. If you want a kick, read A Freewheelin’ Time by Suze Rotolo. She shared her time being Bob Dylan’s muse in the Village in the 1960’s — you’ll never see that area the same.

Finally, Keltie, any last words for the kids?

KK: It’s certainly a time of uncertainty and change, but I would want them to know that your life truly is what you make it. I have a Gwyneth Paltrow quote on my office wall that says “give yourself permission to be everything.” We have to work hard to make our dreams come true, and fight hard for what we think is right. Don’t give up the first time a door slams in your face, or the tenth time things don’t go the way you thought they would.
