Downtown Q&A: Sunni Spencer

SUNNI SPENCER A brand architect with 21 years of fashion industry experience. Founder of Aprés Sea Boutique, a curated lifestyle concept shop that combines home decor with ready-to-wear and accessories.

1. Name three women that inspire you, and tell us why.

Kelly Wearstler. I am a big fan of everything she has put her hands to from a creative and aesthetic standpoint. I also love seeing glimpses of her role as a mother and wife.

Tory Burch. I have seen a lot of brands in my time in the fashion industry, but I have always admired the steady growth and evolution of Tory B. In addition, she is a philanthropist and champion of women; I love that.

My blood sisters: Lisa Apen, Tonya Hills, and Misty Akers. And my spirit sisters Laleh Harper, April Critchlow, and Gina Guercia. These women are all Moms and seem to do it with so much grace and love in addition to their careers and/or other life responsibilities. One of these Moms has an autistic son and another adopted her baby girl. This doesn’t even scratch the surface of the things to be admired among these women.

2. What has been the secret to your success?

I have always taken risks. I like to create “newness” and total experience for people to enjoy. I have stepped up to ask for every promotion and salary increase I’ve received. In a world where women are seen as less valuable in the marketplace traditionally, this has been a game changer in my career.

3. If you were going to pass on one piece of advice to a young woman, what would it be?

Don’t choose anything you do for money or how it may look to others. Choose a career you love and the money will come. You want to be able to say Thank God it’s Monday. Take internships to get your foot in the door where necessary. My best employees have often started out as interns. Be willing to start at the bottom. Be willing to recreate yourself when something just isn’t working.

4. In the fight for equality, what area do you think needs the most attention?

Salary evaluations and increasing opportunity for women leaders with the title. Several times in my career the men were paid out when the company sells and/or promoted to President level titles for the business financial growth I’ve helped to create. This needs to change. I also believe this enables women to compete with other women more resulting in a completely unhealthy work atmosphere.

5. What are you most proud of in your career?

The constant reinventing I’ve created resulting in growth in everything I put my hands and heart to. Also my transition out of fear and into boldness to follow my dreams as an entrepreneur.

6. Where do you get your confidence?

My eternal father Jesus and my natural Father showing me who and whose I am.

7. What makes a woman beautiful?

Inner confidence, humor, and a great heart.

8. What gives you joy?

Laughter, my husband Andrew Matusik, my friends and family, anything tropical, and of course, God.

Downtown Q&A: Maggie Boepple

MAGGIE BOEPPLE A graduate of Brooklyn College, Boepple joined The Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center (PAC@WTC) in 2012 as President/Director, following a distinguished international career in public service, administration, and government relations. Prior to her role at PAC@WTC, Boepple was a senior advisor to the Commissioner of Transport for the London Underground, and held senior positions at the MTA and was the first woman to be appointed Director of Intergovernmental Relations.

Maggie Boepple

1.Name three women that inspire you, and tell us why.

I’m inspired by Governor Madeleine Kunin, a three-term Governor of Vermont, US Deputy Secretary of Education and the US Ambassador to Switzerland, who is one of the most committed feminists I know.

My mother-in-law, Petie Palmer, still practices the piano every day at 99 and watches Morning Joe and Chris  Mathews everyday and devours Presidential biographies.

My 94-year-old Mum still lives in her own home, despite having advanced macular degeneration. Fiercely independent and determined to stay away from assisted living, she gets her news from the radio every day.

2. What has been the secret to your success?

Hard work, humor, and picking jobs and bosses carefully.

3. If you were going to pass on one piece of advice to a young woman, what would it be?

I have always suggested that a young woman get a job in government in the field that interests her. Then after a few years, because she will have gained responsibility and skills in a work environment that outpaces the private sector, move on, if she wants, with all she has learned from government.

4. In the fight for equality, what area do you think needs the most attention?

Equality in pay.

5. What are you most proud of in your career?

I have learned many things from the different jobs I have held. I was never afraid of changing jobs though I did not hop around. Right now, it’s building the Perelman Performing Arts Center.

6. Where do you get your confidence?

My father, who told me that if I worked hard enough I could do anything!

7. What makes a woman beautiful?

Happiness, warmth, and a good haircut.

8. What gives you joy?

A Friday evening drink with my husband and catching up on the week’s action.

Celebrate Ramp Season at Left Bank

We’re in one of the most special times of the year – ramp season! Left Bank, the adorable neighborhood restaurant in the West Village, has the perfect dish to help you appreciate this seasonal treat. They’ve teamed up with our favorite cheese shop Murray’s Cheese for a ramp-packed grilled cheese sandwich. The hyper-seasonal delicacy features Fontina val d’aosta, Annelisse, and Asiago Pressato cheeses on rustic peasant bread. Add a cup of tomato soup for dipping to your mental image because it will be there. Pro tip: get the parmesan fries and dip them in your extra soup.

Other can’t miss dishes at Left Bank include the three cheese topped burger, capricci cacio e pepe, and addictive maple syrup pie for dessert. Left Bank’s sister restaurant, Poulet Sans Tete, recently opened and sells bistro style rotisserie chicken plus all the sauces, sides, and fixings to go.

Dylan Lauren Dishes Easter Tips from Dylan’s Candy Bar

At the age of 6, Dylan Lauren set her sights on opening the modern-day equivalent of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, and in 2001, she fulfilled her dream by opening Dylan’s Candy Bar, which grew to be the largest candy emporium in the world. Dylan gave Downtown some tips for an Easter tablescape, egg hunt, basket, and more!

Tips for Making an Easter Tablescape

Easter is a special time of celebration with family and friends, and I love to make my guests feel special with personal touches. I love to create place settings with name tags that also double as party favors, and of course I incorporate sweets, such as mini chocolate bunnies or the perennial favorite, Peeps. To add a whimsical touch, I station a large chocolate bunny as the centerpiece, and usually by the end of the festivities, an ear or two may be missing due to the chocolate lovers in the room. In addition to decorating with confections, florals help bring the season indoors. Elegant touches like cherry blossom branches in a tall vase, fresh tulips in an Easter basket, or vintage ceramic bunnies on a mantel are the perfect finishing details.

Making the Perfect Easter Basket

I typically include traditional Easter treats in all the holiday festivities, whether they be as decor on my tablescape, as treats in my gift baskets, or as prizes in my esteemed Easter egg hunt. With delectable chocolate creme eggs and bunnies, you can’t go wrong!

Whatever treats I choose, I make sure they are bright and colorful. It’s no secret that I love color. If you look in my store, the hues of the rainbow are everywhere. Therefore, I go for the foiled wrap chocolate goodies since they come in bright blues, purples, pinks, greens and gold.

I also always include a novelty product. We sell so many at Dylan’s Candy Bar that it’s hard to choose just one! Top sellers include a mini surprise egg, an apothecary jar filled to the brim with gummies and chocolate, and a paint can with on-theme sweets.

For those celebrating Passover, we have fun takes on classic traditions, such as mini Matzos, a dark chocolate seder plate, “Ten Plagues Passover Finger Puppets,” Milk Chocolate Passover Ungapotchkies and more. If you celebrate both Easter and Passover, include these items in baskets to give a nod to both holidays.

Throw the Best Egg Hunt Ever

Keep Score With Color

If you’ve ever been to one of my stores, the first thing that catches your eye is a splash of bright colors. To rainbow-ify your hunt this year, come up with a points system for mini foiled chocolate eggs that you can hide in plastic eggs. Each color has a different value (ex: gold is 1 point, blue is 2 points, pink is 3 points, etc.), and the participant with the highest score at the end is the winner. You can hide the more valuable eggs in harder-to-find places for an extra challenge – totally worth the hunt!

Put a Spin on Prizes

Since you’re bound to find chocolate bunnies and foiled chocolate eggs in any traditional Easter egg hunt, I like to mix in nonedible prizes for the kids to collect (that are just as sweet!) One of the biggest hits was making coupons for family friendly activities and meaningful experiences you can tuck into plastic eggs for the kids to redeem later. Whether it’s a coupon to have ice cream for dinner or host a slumber party for friends, the excitement from Easter will linger on. It also doesn’t hurt to have an Easter Bunny costume contest. Not only will it layer in another fun aspect of the party, but the photos will be some of the best!

But Have Them for Everyone

Although the crux of any good Easter Egg Hunt is the competition aspect, it’s important to make sure everyone is happy and fulfilled at the end. In the days leading up to Easter Sunday, work on making prizes with your kids that all hunters can take home afterwards. Whether it’s making a homemade holiday card, or something more intricate like cookie decorating and Easter egg basket making, everyone is sure to leave with a smile on their face. And this activity also provides some special, one-on-one time with your bundles of joy, so who doesn’t love that?

Treat the Adults Too

While the kids hop into the Easter egg hunt, there’s no reason the adults can’t have their own celebration. Prepare a spread of spring treats, cocktails, and mocktails for everyone to enjoy while watching the action unfold – I love making Dirt Cake with an Easter twist, and everyone goes crazy over my candy cocktails. Once the hunt is over, the young ones can join in on the snacking – and enjoy an age appropriate treat by making their own version of Dylan’s Candy Bar’s Easter Peeps Shake! See the at-home recipe here.

Getting Your Home Ready for Spring with Duce Construction Corporation

As Spring finally arrives, we talked with Duce Construction Corporation, a full-service general contractor and construction management firm specializing in building and renovating high-end luxury homes in the Tri-State area, about how to prepare your home or apartment for seasonal changes. Office manager Janet McCreesh fills us in!

Downtown: Why is it important to prepare your home for each season?

Janet McCreesh: It is important because temperature and humidity greatly influence your homes, and those factors vary widely in the Tri-State area each season. In the warmer months, high levels of humidity will cause wood to expand, and direct sunlight can damage artwork and fabrics. In the colder weather, pipes can freeze causing flooding, and low humidity levels can damage furniture, art, millwork, doors, and paint. Different HVAC equipment may be used for each season. This equipment should be maintained or adjusted.

Downtown: Why should we go with a professional company like Duce for our seasonal home preparation needs?

JM: We have over three decades of experience and an established standard of excellence. We have seen a lot of different homes and problems caused by lack of maintenance. Just like with dental care, we are trained to identify & remedy issues while they are still small & easy to fix, to preempt more costly & disruptive repairs in the future. A little professional maintenance goes a long way. We bring unparalleled expertise, quality, craftsmanship and professionalism to every job.

Rooftop Construction

Downtown: What are a few things that we should look for in an apartment dwelling to prepare for the coming spring season?

JM: Check around all windows and doors to make sure you don’t feel any drafts or moisture – if you do, openings should be repaired before the April showers descend. All filters should be changed in air conditioners, air purifiers and HVAC units. Check hinges on doors and drawers for any squeaks (as humidity levels increase, doors and drawers will swell & tight ones can stick!). Clean the dust from refrigerator grills and coils. If any cracks have formed in corners over the drier winter months, caulk over them to keep pests out.

Downtown: What should homeowners with large houses, beach houses, or winter houses consider?

JM: Homeowners should check around their water heaters for signs of leaks, look closely at all stone surfaces (counter tops) for signs of cracks, and inspect smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for proper operation. Check all faucets for leaks, clean aerators, and replace washers if necessary. Clean out dryer vent dust traps to increase the machine’s efficiency & prevent duct fires. Replace filters in all HVAC systems. Check system for proper operation and perform any oiling adjustments.
