Brookfield Place Luminaries
Brookfield Place Luminaries

This installation and holiday tradition features a canopy of colorful lights emanating from hundreds of suspended lanterns. Luminaries was created by the LAB at Rockwell Group for Brookfield Place, inspired by the season’s traditions of sharing, giving, and community.

Touchless wishing stations located on the ground allow visitors to send a motion-activated ‘wish’ into the canopy of lanterns above, prompting a magical display of lights and colors. For each wish made and each interaction with Luminaries, Brookfield Place will donate $1 up to $25,000 to City Harvest, New York City’s largest food rescue organization.

This year, Luminaries debuts Maestro, a new interactive experience that will enable guests to conduct their own symphony. Maestro leverages skeletal tracking technology which allows you to show off your creativity as your own unique light show is displayed in unison with holiday music. The kiosk is an organic form, inspired by an abstraction of global instruments from harps to guitars, and is manufactured by Timbur and made of CNC-milled plywood.

Breaking Ice with Rev Run & DJ Ruckus at the Seaport

Last night we went old school with Rev Run and DJ Ruckus, for the pre-opening of Winterland at The Seaport. It was truly a magical evening, and seeing our Downtown New York City skyline from rooftop perspectives is something we are quite used to, but this view takes the prize for the WOW factor.

Breaking Ice with Rev Run & DJ Ruckus at the SeaportThe Masters of Rap

The Seaport is an 11-block area that lies along the East River, next to the Financial District. It is home to some of the oldest architecture in the city and was incredibly important to the early maritime industry of New York. You can learn more about the historic area by visiting the South Street Seaport Museum.

Breaking Ice with

Today the Seaport is owned and managed by Howard Hughes Corporation. Although there was more than enough controversy about the development of the Seaport, the effort was successful to bring it into the new millennium with the redevelopment of this historic area into a shopping and lifestyle destination. The $785 million, 400,000-square-foot development led by CEO David Weinreb, includes 10 Corso, Malibu Farm, ESPN, Tuck Room, iPic Theater, R 17, Mr. C. Seaport (left), SJP Collection (below), and soon but not soon enough, our dear friend Jean George Vongerichten, along with David Chang and more.

Last night our Editor in Chief Deb Martin and I danced, jumped, ate, and drank our way through a fun-filled evening with the opening of Winterland, the only outdoor ice skating rooftop in all of New York. AND we also had the pleasure of sitting down with DJ Run, founder of Run D.M.C. and the evening’s featured entertainer.

Breaking Ice with Rev Run & DJ Ruckus at the Seaport

Grace A. Capobianco What do you think about downtown and where this area has come from since 9\11?

Rev Run It’s amazing. We’re a fighting town, a fighting spirit, we pull together. You never know how you will pull together until you have to, nobody knows how strong they are until they have to. I love the fierceness of our people, we pull together, I think that we are on our way to be “all the way up!”

GC When you were playing the song Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys and JayZ you just blew it out of the park, and the crowd tonight went crazy. Could you feel the energy in the room?

Breaking Ice with Rev Run

RR Yes, I did, you gotta push it, I helped to push the record tonight.

GC What do you think of rap today from where it began?

RR Listen, you gotta look at Jay Z and people like that. People progress. People are always saying, I like it better with Run DMC and LL Cool J, but if you look at it you see Drake is doing something very authentic too. He sings, he can make a song, and he gets mad when he is not put up for pop song of the year. He has the most dreams, he’s the biggest star around so what do I think of Drake, JayZ, and Beyonce touring the world? I mean I can’t sit here and say, “Oh it was better when Run DMC played the Garden. Today Jay Z and Beyonce are playing stadiums, things are progressing. I love to hear the record we played Fat Joe All The Way, you said your theme song is Empire State of Mind, but also the hits keep coming, it’s the leading music.

Deb Martin Does it make you feel good to see the evolution of rap? You are one of the pioneers.

Rev Run I don’t take that credit because you have Grand Master Flash, Cold Crush Brothers, I don’t take credit from it. I was glad God gave me a talent. You see my show this isn’t Run DMC, I’m a DJ, I’m playing all these hit records from other people so I’m grateful for my place in the story, and I love hip-hop so I’m proud of all it. I’m looking at Kurtis Blow with the Hip Hop Nutcracker right now, there is just so much going on.

DM I love that, what a great idea that is.

Rev Run Yes, it’s blowing my mind and he’s killing it too. So if you think of it, I was the son of Kurtis Blow years ago, he called himself the King of Rap, then Run DMC came along and we were the Kings of Rap. Then he had a Christmas record and we had Christmas in Hollis so I don’t think any one person can claim Kingship cause you know, the Lord picks you up and puts you down, and then picks up somebody else.

DM It’s amazing to see the progression and the evolution of the music.

RR Yeah, I love it I just wait for the new stars with the new voices, but you know, there’s nothing new under the sun. I’ll be here today, and 100 years from now they will have my records and there will be somebody else claiming that they’re the King.

GC Do you feel that rap has moved more into the mainstream now a lot more people are listening to it now?

RR It’s a big big deal like I say you have to go back to Jay Z and Beyonce they sell out. Before you blink your eyes it’s sold out. JayZ puts out a record and the people go crazy, and Drake, same thing. Lil Wayne put out a record with Swizz Beatz recently after years of battling with his record company and it’s a hit record right now. So I just think that it’s all progressing and it’s all good!

GC What’s your favorite restaurant downtown New York City

Rev Run Man, you’re putting me on the spot in front of all these beautiful downtown restaurants! – you know my favorite restaurant downtown, the one with the garage doors, Barbuto. My wife and I love to eat there.

A look at The Tuck Room, a great new spot from Chef Sherry Yard & Sommelier Adam Seger

Dinner and a movie have never been classier than at the iPic Theater in South Street Seaport. Not only can you order food in the comfort of your theater seat, you can also grab a bite to eat before or after the movie at newly-opened The Tuck Room located on the third floor of iPic.

Sherry Yard, James Beard award-winning chef and COO of iPic’s restaurant division, curates The Tuck Room’s menu while Adam Seger, iPic’s master bartender and advanced sommelier, creates the eclectic seasonal cocktails. Last Monday, the Downtown team had the opportunity to attend a dinner and cocktail tasting at The Tuck Room. FullSizeRender-2Yard’s menu features bite-sized and handheld gourmet treats among other items, perfect for eating in the theater, that Downtown was able to taste for ourselves.

Our first drink upon arrival was a Riesling cocktail with Pop Rocks at the bottom of the champagne glass. It was crisp and refreshing, perfect for the first drink of the night.

The first course was a delicious Ponzu Mignonette oyster, displayed on a glass plate, frozen to keep the oyster cold. A beautiful presentation for a delightful treat! Wine was given per each course, to accompany a different taste for each dish.FullSizeRender-4 (1)Our second course was a dish called “The Avocado,” featuring half of a grilled and stuffed Hass avocado with breadcrumbs, cotija cheese, shallot-avocado mousse and finger lime pearls. This dish reinvents avocados to the next level, filled with different flavors and textures to satisfy any palette.FullSizeRenderIn between courses, Yard and her executive chef explained each dish and ensured we were pleased with our meal—which we were, every time. The next course offered was an amazing brioche-crusted crab cake with Old Bay remoulade and a citrus salad. Yard’s crab cake recipe does not have any unnecessary fillers in the cake; instead, it’s just pure crab to emphasize its buttery and fresh flavor.FullSizeRender-3 (1)Other courses included sweet and spicy pork belly lettuce wraps, Chinatown duck and Scarlet pepper steak. As you may guess, each course was better than the last. Yard’s creations are made with love, passion and really live up to her “craveable American cuisine” mantra.

After dinner, Seger took us into an area called The Green Room, where you have to push a secret book in the bookcase for the door to open. While there, we fawned over the works of Peter Tunney that lined each wall of The Green Room. We were also invited to try some dessert and any drink of our choice on the menu. Seger explained the cocktail menu, sharing that the cocktails change seasonally.

There is also a VIP bartender once a week, where one individual from New York’s hottest lounges, clubs or bars serves The Tuck Room crowd with cocktail creations of their own and a personal playlist to accompany the night.

FullSizeRender-6

The Tuck Room is sure to please any customer for drinks, dinner or both! There’s no need to purchase a movie ticket to visit The Tuck Room — just come on an empty stomach and you will leave feeling satisfied and amazed at every turn.

iPic now open in the South Street Seaport

iPic Theaters Fulton Market_Seaport District NYC_Rendering

Last weekend marked the official opening of the brand new iPic theater at the South Street Seaport on Oct. 7. Located at 11 Fulton Street in the remodeled Fulton Market building, this is iPic’s first NYC location, and we have no doubt that this will be the new go-to for Lower Manhattan’s moviegoers — and draw crowds from all over the city.

iPic Theaters_2016_Auditorium

“The experience, the architecture, the art that you saw when you walked in here, we don’t replicate that from location to location. So each location is unique onto itself,” said Michelle Soundry, founder and CEO of Gab Group who handles iPic’s PR.

“I’m really excited to share this experience with you and for you to meet all of the incredible spear headers behind the iPic brand experience,” Soundry said as she welcomed the guests at the press preview on Oct 6.

The Seaport’s new iPic theater features eight auditoriums with plenty of seats — even debuting their new options: iPic’s patented Pod and Chaise Lounge seating, bringing the experience to the ultimate comfort level. Each seat also comes with a blanket and pillow and equipped with buttons to make sure, your seat is exactly to your comfort.

Hamid Hashemi_President & CEO_iPic Entertainment, iPic Theaters (2)

“We looked at every aspect of movie-going, looked at all of the negatives and turned the negatives into positives. The four biggest complaint we heard from people were they have sticky floors, noisy, kids are running in and out of the theater. It’s not comfortable, so we addressed every single one of them,” explained Hamid Hashemi, President & CEO of iPic Entertainment.

“Looking at the comfort and convenience that you have in your home, what do we do? We lie on a couch, really comfortable, great sound system, pillow and a blanket and you sip on your drink. Now you can do it right inside of an auditorium and have an assured experience,” he continued.

More than that — and probably our favorite part — the menu! There is the “Dining in the Dark” experience, in which food will be brought to your seat all at the mere push of a button.

Masterfully created by chef Sherry Yard and master bartender and sommelier Adam Seger, no one will be left hungry or thirsty. Just wanting more. And luckily there is plenty to choose from. The menu reads dishes such as Reuben Croquettes and Chinois Chicken Salad Wrap, while the drink menu shakes up specialty cocktails like Empire State of Mind Manhattan and Big Apple Margarita.

iPic Theaters_Chef Sherry Yard_Chief Operating Officer, Restaurant Division

“I think it’s all important for you to know that we make everything we can from scratch, and if it isn’t made from scratch, it’s made by friends of mine and they make it to my speck,” said Sherry Yard about the quality of the menu. It features many dishes made in collaboration by Yard and her friends.

iPic Express_Turkey Sliders_DylanJeni_0008

“To understand the food just a little bit, it’s always my favorite food that I love to eat, I call it crave-able American cuisine, food that I love to eat every day,” Yard explained.

The cocktails deserve a few words of their own. An extensive list of specialty cocktails mixed with tried-and-true classics, seasonal brews and coffee “dessertails” for a little sweet pick-me-up.

Adam Seger_Master Bartender, Corporate Sommelier_iPic Entertainment

“What’s really behind it is the passion and the love — and that’s what iPic is all about. The passion that everyone has about the movies, we try and bring that in the glass for you. And it doesn’t just stop at the cocktails, if you’re a beer drinker, we’re working with some of the top micro-brewers here in the city,” said Adam Seger.

iPic Express_Hummingbird

“I absolutely love making drinks and I hire people who love making drinks. And that’s really at the essence of at the deference of what we’re all about,” he added.

Guests can enjoy both the food and the drinks without the movie experience. On the third floor of the multiplex, they will find the Tuck Room, a destination drinking and dining den inspired by the city that brought cocktail culture to vibrant life.

iPic Theaters_Group Shot in Premium Plus

The iPic theater has found itself in great company at the South Street Seaport with neighbors such as Guess and Hornblower Cruise and events as well as the future home of Momofuku and a Jean Georges restaurant. The iPic theater will be yet another attraction at the Seaport only cementing the Seaport District as one of the hottest destinations of Lower Manhattan.

“First of all, we’re thrilled to have iPic opening their first cinema in New York in the South Street Seaport. It’s exactly what we’ve been telegraphing to the market where we want to go,” explained Phillip St. Pierre, General Manager for the South Street Seaport.

“iPic has a wonderful experience that they’re delivering to the customer and – that’s kind of a thread that you’re going see running throughout everything that we do over the next few years. It’s all going to be about experiences and bringing something to Manhattan that isn’t really easy to place in any particular project,” he added.

Downtown was in attendance for iPic’s press opening on Oct 6. and was delighted to try out the full experience with comfortable seating, cocktail concoctions, bites of the crave-able food and an exclusive preview of the psychological drama, Girl on the Train.

“Welcome! We have waited a long time for iPic to arrive in Lower Manhattan. I’m thrilled to have attended the press opening. You can be sure that find me at iPic enjoying their first-class seating, Adam’s delicious and creative cocktails along with Chef Sherry’s 5 star bites,” said Grace A. Capobianco, CEO and Publisher of Downtown after the event.
