Bowie Tribute Appears At Broadway-Lafayette Station On The Anniversary of His Passing

“Look up here, I’m in heaven.”

David Bowie left this dimension four years ago today, after liver cancer ravaged his mortal form. He was just 69 in Earth years, but his music and artistic legacy remain immortal. Ever productive ’til the bitter end, Bowie released Blackstar and the musical Lazarus, just weeks before his death: the mark of a true Capricorn.

This morning, on the anniversary of his passing, an anonymous street artist (or perhaps the Puckish spirit of David Bowie himself?) modified the Crosby Street entrance to the Broadway-Lafayette station.

Blink and you’ll miss it. The artist fashioned the usual BDFM subway letters into a modified “BOWIE 4,” for the four years he’s been gone. Underneath, stick on letters added to the entryway sign read “STATION TO STATION” in shiny futuristic letters, a nod to his 1976 album of that name.

The New York City Transit Authority itself weighed in on Twitter for the EV Grieve tweet about the tribute:

Its subtlety is pure genius; it does take a moment to register, but it’s a touching tribute to the Starman. Looming above the station entrance is 285 Lafayette Street, Bowie’s former home.

The title track of Station To Station opens with the sound of passing trains, a nice tribute the sounds roaring below the pavement. Trains featured heavily in David Bowie’s lyrics, and he was known to ride the MTA anonymously, famously pretending to read a Greek newspaper to keep from being detected. Who knows, perhaps you too once sat next to him on the D train.

In 2018 the Broadway-Lafayette station became a virtual Bowie shrine as Spotify sponsored a promotion for the Brooklyn Museum retrospective that showcased the icon’s paintings, costumes, creations, instruments and personal items.

Hats off to you, anonymous street artist, hero/ine “just for one day.”

Walking Into Health: New Years Resolution

By: Adam Que, a fitness trainer, practitioner, former MMA fighter, and writer

Waking up late in the morning has its consequences. You can either skip your whole hygiene routine, devour anything in sight because you know it would provide you with energy, or throw on clothes that you know should be in the dirty laundry bag. Following by barging out of your apartment to be on a shoulder to shoulder status with other New Yorkers on the street or at the subway station.

I’m sure most of you have experienced all of the above. Of course, walking was most likely a big part of the problem since folks are taking Ubers, Lyfts, and cabs to their destinations nowadays. With this rush of stress and the bumps people are facing in life, how could anyone find walking beneficial? Well, it’s no coincidence Walking and Wellness both start with W.

Here are some key benefits of walking:

Prevents Diseases:

According to a review on the C3 Collaborating for Health, walking is an effective way to prevent or reduce the risk of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Helps With Living Longer and Weight Loss:

Walking is also important for the longevity of life. In the same review, there was a case study on the Global Corporate Challenge that recorded 54% of participants who had high blood pressure showed low risk by the end of a 12-week walking challenge. As well as an increase of energy by 71% and a drop of 10% body fat on average for those who had body fat loss. Another case study recorded that 94% of the walkers part of the Heart Foundation Walking group (HFW), the largest free community-based walking group in Australia said, “HFW was essential for their physical well-being.”

Mental Health:

Besides the physical benefits of walking, I mainly believe it is amazing for mental health. Dr. Lars Madsen of The MindShift Foundation said, “It increases relaxation and can be equivalent to a sleeping pill, even for people with insomnia.” Walking also reduces stress, anxiety, improves cognitive function and can lift one’s spirit instantly, especially when doing it with friends or loved ones.

So besides that gruelly commute, try to incorporate 15 to 30-minute walks throughout your week. Whether you missed a workout, your routine is discombobulated or you feel you’ve been out of whack due to the holidays kicking your butt, get to walking. If you find yourself walking in Downtown Manhattan locations like the Jerry Driscoll Walk, SoHo’s side streets, along The Highline or through Battery Park, take the time to envision a positive perspective and enjoy yourself.

Get to stepping strongly into 2020 to start that first quarter on a healthy foot.

Holiday Cupcake Craze in Downtown NYC

Here in Manhattan, every holiday season is a grand miracle for everyone. Some of those miracles are made via dessert, especially cupcakes, since cupcakes are known as muffins that believed in miracles. Many ask where they can find a solid cupcake in the Big Apple throughout the holiday season. Fear no more, because Downtown Magazine has rounded up five bakeries that offer mouthwatering cupcakes.

Funny Face Bakery by Cupcake Market:

Although Cupcake Market changed its name to Funny Face Bakery due to the popularity of spot-on celebrity Funny Faces and realistic Custom Face Cookies, cupcakes are still sold and are one of a kind as they are literally dense and moist. These guys will provide you with that ideal bite of a cupcake and finger-licking good frosting that will make you smile from ear to ear. Not to mention that the frosting is so light that you won’t feel overwhelmed with the sweetness! The banana cupcake with strawberry icing topped with freshly diced strawberries is quite a favorite and is one to have you purchasing seconds!

Sprinkles New York- Brookfield Place

Yes, Sprinkles is a major franchise. The location in Brookfield Place, however, is like no other. This Sprinkles location is rather small and is conveniently nestled across the street from the iconic World Trade Center and connected to the Oculus and Westfield Mall. The walk-up counter is splendid for those who go through the city’s hustle and bustle due to the fact that they can get their sugar fix in a heartbeat before heading to their destination. These cupcakes are baked fresh in miniature batches throughout the day and are made from top-notch ingredients. What’s even better is that pickup and delivery services are offered at this location!

Little Cupcake Bakeshop

Little Cupcake Bakeshop’s story began in Brooklyn back in 2005. Nowadays, there is a location in the heart of Soho which is such a delight. This bakery doesn’t only concentrate on baking cupcakes, but all of the classic American desserts you can think of. All baked goods are baked by utilizing fresh and sustainable ingredients, which are locally sourced from farms in the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Vermont, and New Jersey. Baking is also done in small batches right at the bakery every single day. Of course, Little Cupcake Bakeshop paid homage to Downtown’s Old Little Italy by creating the “Mott Street” cupcake, which is their take on tiramisu. This cupcake consists of a vanilla bean cake soaked in Illy espresso and topped with homemade mascarpone frosting.

Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC

If you are trying to stay away from dairy, gluten, eggs, and all of that jazz…then Erin McKenna’s Bakery in the Lower East Side is the place for you to grab your cupcakes. Ingredients for cupcakes and other treats are selected in a responsible manner. Not to mention that natural sweeteners are used moderately. This bakery’s main objective is to
make vegan and gluten-free eating fun and tasty. One of the flavors that folks rage about is the Thin Mint Cupcake which literally tastes like a Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie!

Magnolia Bakery- West Village

You can’t go wrong with grabbing a couple of cupcakes from this New York City Classic. Especially from the West Village location. There is a variety of cupcake flavors and each one is charming in its own way as they have different stories to tell. Of course, the Classic Red Velvet or the Vanilla cupcake with Pink Buttercream that Carrie Bradshaw ordered in Sex in The City is a must!
