Silverstein Properties Team Up for Back-Together-School Shopping

It’s that time of year again, Shools In

The National Retail Federation estimates that families will spend an average of $849 on back-to-school items, almost $60 more than last year when people rushed to set up classrooms at home. College students and their families are expected to spend an average of $1,200.

Here’s a program that will help local New York parents with their back-to-school needs.

As shopIN.nyc’s local online shopping movement grows, so does the number of New York organizations eager to support the movement. Real estate firm Silverstein Properties has partnered with shopIN.nyc to launch a communications initiative to residents of its buildings across the city to spread the word about shopIN.nyc’s #BackTogether School Shopping program.

About shopIN.nyc

An online “everything” store supplied by dozens of New York City businesses offering same-day delivery in one bag, shopIN.nyc aids in strengthening neighborhoods by keeping money in the community advances sustainability in NYC and provides non-exploitative options for both stores and delivery professionals. Together, New Yorkers are showing the world our main streets (and web browsers) need not be filled with the same few big retailers.

#BackTogether School Shopping enables New Yorkers to buy the supplies their kids need all in one place, sourced from local stores. Shoppers can either find items on shopIN.nyc, load the cart and checkout, or use the free concierge service built with parents in mind. Just fill out a short form and upload your school list, pick a delivery date, and the concierge will find your items from local stores at better prices than Amazon and deliver them in one package. Shoppers can even donate a backpack to an NYC kid in need and pick a school of their choice to support through the automatic school donations program.

Silverstein Properties joins organizations including Nextdoor, the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation, and NYC Next in supporting shopIN.nyc’s efforts to empower our communities to change the future of NYC for all. One of New York’s leading real estate development, investment and management firms, Silverstein’s residential properties include 30 Park Place, Silver Towers, River Place, and the Silver Suites residences on West 42nd Street.

“Residents of Silverstein Properties’ buildings use shopIN.nyc to shop the city,  our back-to-school service helps them to get supplies delivered from local stores same-day,” said Maya Komerov, shopIN.nyc CEO. “Silverstein Properties’ support in spreading the word is a game-changer. We’re proud to partner with them to make their residents aware of this community supporting tool.”

ShopIN.nyc

Maya Komerov, Founder of ShopIN.nyc, steps onto the New York Launch Pod to discuss her same-day delivery e-commerce platform that allows you to shop from stores in your neighborhood all from the comfort of your home. For more information, please contact Maya Komerov, maya@shopin.nyc, 646-491-1941

As seen on NY Launch Pod: ‘With the rise of commerce giants like Amazon, traditional brick-and-mortar retailers have suffered declining sales year after year. Despite most New Yorker’s wish to shop local and support their communities, local retailers have found it hard to compete on price and convenience and, because New Yorkers are always in a rush, oftentimes it doesn’t make sense to go to multiple stores to get everything they need. This is where ShopIN.nyc comes in. Through ShopIN.nyc Maya Komerov has created a platform that rivals the convenience of Amazon through same-day delivery and an all-in-one commerce platform that supports the small businesses which are the lifeblood of our neighborhoods. On the ShopIN.nyc platform you can choose from a range of products sold by local businesses, ShopIN.nyc then sends their delivery team to each business to put your cart together and deliver it to you by the end of the day.” NY Launch Pod

Tal Kerret, President, Silverstein Properties

“We are delighted to partner with shopIN.nyc on this important initiative,” said Tal Kerret, President, Silverstein Properties. “We believe it is important to support local businesses and retailers now more than ever. This is an easy and affordable way for parents and guardians to shop for their children’s school supplies.”

BEFORE SOHO BECAME ONE OF THE PRICIEST –

retail and residential neighborhoods in New York, the large, cast-iron buildings housed factories on the top floors that were used for light manufacturing of household items, lighting, textiles, and fashion accessories. Those goods were then sold in the ground floor retail spaces.

In the 1960’s manufacturing started to give way to artists, who moved into the gigantic lofts because of the tremendous light, and the minimal rents. Though much of SoHo is now more reminiscent of a large, open-air mall, there are still pockets on the outer edges that recall those early days. It is in one of those pockets that Michele Varian has her eponymous design shop.

“I started my business from my loft in SoHo,” says Varian. “I worked as a fashion designer so I wanted to do something that I could self-finance.” Since Varian had fashion experience she had an understanding of textiles and she started with a business that was primarily wholesale. “I started doing these installation-type pieces. I was helping a friend who was getting married in their loft so I made massive cutout scrims that looked like trees and enormous mobiles with transparent and frosted plexiglass discs that reflected the light. I sold those in my first store, but I was mainly doing wholesale business.” Then after September 11, she decided to buck the current trend and open a retail store on “sleepy Crosby Street.”

“I was one of the first retailers on Crosby Street.

I made all of the pillows in the back of the shop, and I hired all of the seamstresses I had worked with in fashion.” Though she had a shop, Varian was mostly still selling her merchandise wholesale to stores like Barney’s, Nieman Marcus, and ABC Carpet & Home. Then the 2008 recession happened and things changed. “My showroom reps in Texas were doing tremendous business for me, and in the beginning of 2008 they abruptly shuttered. They had started to feel the pain from the recession before it happened here.”

In the meantime, ABC asked her to do a pop-up shop, and they placed her in a great location on the ground floor. “Up until 2008, wholesale carried the business, and I was a neighborhood store with regulars, a place where people stopped in to take a break. After 2008, my retail business took off, primarily because I have always had accessible as well as aspirational design. I never wanted to be one of those snobby SoHo shops where the staff glares at customers who don’t have enough money. We always had a neighborhood kind of vibe here.”

Today, Varian’s Howard Street shop features an extensive, and colorful pillow library in the basement. She also manufactures her own lighting line in the shop and has a line of wallpaper that she designs, which is manufactured in Hoboken, New Jersey. She just started working with Two Trees in Brooklyn to create a furniture line, and designs jewelry and objets d’art, as well.

The shop also holds a beautifully curated selection of items from other artisanal makers like Bloomist, and DBO Home, which is arranged through Guesst, a system of “pop shares” that she created with fellow Detroit native Jay Norris. The system allows existing retailers and small, artisanal brands to connect. “Even doing a pop-up can be wildly expensive for a small brand.

We are hoping that Guesst will help brick-and-mortar stores to survive and still evolve with the changing times.” DT

Editor’s Note: Michele Varian has moved to 400 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217. At the present time, the physical store is closed due to COVID-19, however online ordering is available.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Create Your Signature Scent At Olfactory NYC

Walking into Olfactory NYC on Mott Street feels a bit like wandering into a chic, friendly science lab. The minimalist, white décor allows the senses to focus entirely on the task at hand: creating your own custom perfume. Free will is the approach of the brand.

The Olfactory NYC experience begins with a selection of standard bases (all categorized with unisex names), and a vast array of accords (a choice of various blends) to enhance the scent. Each of the bases show examples of the actual seeds, leaves, and sources of the natural oils used to create the fragrances. You get a little education as well, with brief presentations and explanations. The company is very transparent about where their scents come from, and they are passionate about ethical sourcing.

Photo: Alice Teeple

Olfactory NYC is certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny International, and all of their products are vegan. Additionally, all fragrances are sustainably and locally sourced, phthalate- and paraben-free, and contain ingredients certified safe by IFRA (learn more).

Olfactory NYC offers the base blends as they are, but if you want to personalize one with a few extra notes, you can select from the menu.

Feeling fruity? The Ashton blend boasts lemon, bergamot, and white tea, with options to boost it. Maybe some blackcurrant and patchouli for a surprising twist? How about sage, orris and clearwood for an earthier approach? The choice is yours!

Olfactory NYC offers some unusual accord combinations, my favorite being English toffee/oud/saffron. One pleasant surprise was a tomato/basil combination that smelled like a summer garden after a gentle rain.

After choosing your two favorites, you are presented with perfume cards with the various combinations of the base and accords. You select which scents you enjoy the most, choose up to four combinations, and test the blends on your skin to see how they react to your personal chemistry.

Ever the Venus in Scorpio, I narrowed my choices down to the sensual Cam (designed by Le Labo Santal 33 creator Frank Voelkl) and the smooth Jayden (designed by perfumer Harry Fremont). It was difficult to decide. Cam, a blend of fig, violet leaves, and incense, was wonderful; the leaves had a fun little bite to the scent. After some deliberation, however, I knew Jayden would be more of an everyday scent for me.

Jayden’s signature is sandalwood, bolstered with a gently searing musk and refreshing cedarwood. After blending it with several different combinations of accords; my nose landed squarely on cedarwood and incense. (Although the toffee/oud/saffron accord was intriguing and smelled heavenly, it was too light and sweet for my own personality. I like an element of mystery!

Once the selection is finalized, the blend is then poured into a bottle and you choose the name and color for the custom label (available at no extra charge). Voilá! Here is my own personal scent, which is kept on file by Olfactory NYC in case I ever want to get another bottle (highly likely).

Photo (and perfume!) by Alice Teeple

Although some perfumes can be saturated with heavy citrus or patchouli elements, this is not the case with Olfactory NYC. All blends smelled wonderful and packed a punch…without overwhelming sensitive noses.

Four hours later, the “Alice” blend still smelled fresh and fragrant on my skin.

This is a wonderful perfume and having input in its creation was a delightful way to spend an hour. Best of all, a custom-made, 50ml bottle runs at $78. Their 50ml/1.69oz core fragrances are $50 (purchased as-is, without scent customization). Additionally, they offer 10ml/0.33oz travel spray and rollerballs of their core fragrances for $20. Olfactory NYC’s minimalist approach extends to its packaging, and because all scents are created in-house, this quality perfume is something special that won’t break the bank. Why pick up a tired old standby when you can have a little choose-your-own-adventure with your sweetheart…or your friends…or yourself?

If you want to give Olfactory NYC as a gift, they do offer empty gift bottles that lucky recipients can customize for themselves. Because scent is so deeply personal and can be hit or miss as a gift, this is a fantastic idea. They also offer rotating seasonal base scents. In addition to fragrances, Olfactory NYC also offers body lotions, candles, and body wash in their base scents. (Only fragrances can be customized, however.) You can also personalize your wedding celebration with the gift of custom scent!

No appointment necessary! Go in and have some fun.

Resolution 2019: Shop Local

It’s that time of year: Resolution 2019 is upon us, and I have a good one. And bonus, it’s something you can do every day and doesn’t involve going carb free or buying expensive workout gear. This year, why not make an effort to support your local business owners? It’s easy to do. Instead of heading to Amazon Prime for your best friend’s birthday gift, spend an afternoon wandering around the Lower East Side to find the perfect bauble. Actually, that is two resolutions in one – everyone knows that walking around New York counts as a workout.

Supporting local business is important, but equally important are the memories and attachments you are creating. Some of my happiest New York memories involve shopping. Here’s one. In 1994, I was an associate managing editor at House Beautiful magazine, and Steve and I were newly engaged. Money was tight, but we didn’t care. As the cliché goes, we were poor but happy.

One of our favorite ways to spend a Saturday was to wander around the Village. We usually started in the East Village and worked our way West, looking for new shops, revisiting old favorites, and fantasizing about living in one of those beautiful brownstones. In the West Village, we would have dinner at MacDougal’s Café – a coffee shop with good French onion soup, a decent burger, and endless refills of coffee. In those days you could eat well for under $20, and even treat yourself to a cappuccino without having to take out a second mortgage. I know, I know, it’s a nostalgia trip but bear with me.

MacDougal Street was a great place to wander. The ghosts of Bob Dylan, Eleanor Roosevelt, Louisa May Alcott, Jack Kerouac, Richie Havens, Lenny Bruce, and so many others bumped shoulders with young hopefuls, writers, musicians, poets…well at least that’s the way I remember it. It’s not that the historic buildings don’t still stand, it’s just that young hopefuls can’t afford the neighborhood anymore. But back to my shopping memory.

Resolution 2019, shop local
C’est Magnifique on MacDougal Street

Of all the shops on MacDougal Street, the best of the best was C’est Magnifique. The Albrizio family opened there in the late fifties, and they made jewelry for people like Iggy Pop, Keith Richards, and Madonna. Famous faces adorned the walls of the tiny shop, but the amazing thing about the Albrizio family was that they treated everyone the same – like family. The window was FILLED with treasures. Inside, cases lined the walls and counters brimmed with vintage and new pieces. The shop was busy with people dropping off jewelry for repair, ordering something custom, or just hanging out listening to Alfred Albrizio Jr’s stories.

resolution 2019, shop local
Christmas cuff from C’est Magnifique, 1994

In the winter of 1994, with money tight, Steve wanted to buy me a Christmas present. He picked out a beautiful sterling cuff with an oval Lapis cabochon at C’est Magnifique. But he didn’t have enough cash to buy the piece. Al could see how much he wanted it, so he let Steve have it for the cash he had in his pocket, and told him to pay the rest when he could. Months later, when some money came in, Steve went back to the shop to pay the balance, and he remembers that Al was surprised that he had come back.

We never forgot that kindness. It was a very good Christmas because of the generosity of a guy who understood the true spirit of the season. We purchased many beautiful items from Al, and they are my favorite pieces to this day. When the shop on MacDougal closed because of rising rents, they moved to East 9th Street, and ultimately closed after Al’s untimely death in 2014.

resolution 2019, shop local
Earrings from Sterling Assault

Nowadays, we are so happy that Alfred Albrizio III is continuing his family tradition with Sterling Assault, creating new designs and reproducing some of the classics he helped create at C’est Magnifique. His jewelry is available exclusively at I Need More on Orchard Street, or through his website. Check it out. You can’t get it on Amazon, believe me.

There’s a lot of talk nowadays about how to preserve the New York of song and story.  But still every day we see whole blocks of empty storefronts, new construction, and chain stores moving in. Shopping local is critical, but to be fair, it isn’t just shopping local that is going to save this town. A bill for commercial “rent control” was originally introduced by Ruth Messinger in 1986, and it’s under review again, with current Speaker Corey Johnson signaling his support. I don’t know if that’s the answer but I do know that something needs to be done. Every week an old favorite seems to close. This week will mark the last for the Cornelia Street Cafe, a Village staple since the seventies. In 2017, the New York Times reported that their rent was $33,000 a month. You do the math.

While our city government decides where their loyalties lie, you can help. Support your local businesses. Try to avoid chain stores. Buy your coffee from a bodega. Shop for Christmas and birthday presents the way I always did and still do, walking and wandering, and making friends. Seek out small businesses and local owners who are the lifeblood of this city.

Make it your Resolution 2019. And every year after that.
