Extreme’s Gary Cherone on new DVD, New York City, Van Halen, and more

Having sold over 10 million albums, Extreme was one of the world’s most popular hard rock bands in the early 1990s. While many people first discovered Extreme through hit ballads like “More Than Words” and “Hole Hearted,” the Boston-based quartet had hard rock hits before and after that; “Kid Ego,” “Get The Funk Out” and “Rest In Peace” being three notable examples. Extreme went on hiatus in 1996, not regrouping again until 2004. The studio album Saudades De Rock followed in 2007 as did a live DVD in 2009, Take Us Alive. A follow-up to Saudades is currently in the works.

Lead singer Gary Cherone has stayed very busy since Extreme took its first break in 1996. He replaced Sammy Hagar in Van Halen, leading to 1998’s Van Halen III album. He has also released recordings as the frontman of Tribe Of Judah, Cherone, and Hurtsmile. Outside of the studio, for the sake of fun, he has been part of two Who tribute bands that have toured in our region. Meanwhile, Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt has been playing guitar with Rihanna for the past seven years; more than 15 years earlier, he had notably collaborated with another top R&B singer when he played guitar on the Janet Jackson hit “Black Cat.”

In support of the forthcoming Pornograffiti Live 25 / Metal Meltdown DVD by Extreme — which also includes drummer Kevin “kFigg” Figueiredo and original bassist Pat Badger — Gary caught up with Downtown for some Q&A. The DVD, which hits stores on Sept. 23, was produced by the award-winning production company Rock Fuel Media in association with Loud & Proud Records. Extreme can be followed online at www.extreme-band.com, beyond keeping up Twitter and Facebook pages.

As someone that’s been around the world quite a few times, what is it that keeps you based in Boston all these years later?

Gary Cherone: First and foremost — family. Plus I was born and raised here, it’s got a certain rhythm, the four seasons, the “Baaston” accents, even the screwed-up roads are unique. I guess you have to live here to love it.

What do you remember about the first gig you ever played in New York City?

GC: I don’t remember if it was the first, but I do remember The Cat Club. Small, dirty, everything you’d expect. The crowd was great, the band had a good night and hung out with Ace Frehley after the show. It was a thrill!

Your new DVD includes a documentary called Rockshow, and the concert on there itself is a celebration of the Pornograffiti album. For you, is it fun to look back at the past?

GC: For us, it was something we’ve never done before — play the whole record top to bottom in chronological order. A bit challenging because some of the songs we never played or haven’t played for 20 years, but the band ended up having a blast. We also encored with quite a few songs from the catalog, so it ended up being one of our favorite shows we put together.

Do you look back at a particular era of your career as the most fun?

GC: I try to look forward and not back, but when I do, I always remember “the firsts.” First club, first record deal and record, first tour, first video, first girl…oh sorry, getting carried away! I guess the milestones in the band’s career as well as the highlights — touring with Aerosmith, Budokan, the Freddie Mercury Tribute. OK, enough.

Is a follow-up to Saudedes De Rock still in the works? I’d imagine that a lot of songs have been written for it.

GC: Yes, there are a lot of songs written and the band continues to record. We know we are overdue for new material, but we want to make it the best thing to date, and we will not disappoint.

Has Nuno’s playing with Rihanna for the past seven years or so at all influenced the kind of music he’s written for Extreme?

GC: We all bring in different influences when we get together. That’s what keeps it interesting, but it all ends up somehow sounding like Extreme, whatever that is!

Are there plans for another Hurtsmile album?

GC: Yes! you’ll be hearing something very soon.

You’ve been the singer in two different tribute bands to The Who over the years, SlipKid and Amazing Journey. Is that your favorite band?

GC: Very difficult question to answer. I have a few “favorite bands” and they’re one of them and, certainly one of the most influential.

I’m sure you’re tired of talking about the Van Halen era of your career, but I personally thought you filled the role very well and did the best with what you could. More than a decade and a half later, is there anything you wish more people knew about your Van Halen tenure?

GC: I’ve said this before — if I were to do it all over again, I would have liked to tour with the band before we recorded the record. Looking back, I always thought there were some good songs on the record, but could have been more cohesive. We became more of a band when we were on tour.

Not a lot is known about you besides your musical career, do you have artistic aspirations beyond music?

GC: I’m a pretty reclusive sod, so yes and no.

Finally, Gary, any last words for the kids?

GC: I’ve always said Extreme may not have as many fans as some of the other bands, but we do have the most loyal and loving. They have suffered long through the years patiently waiting for the band to reunite, and when we did, they were there to remind us of their love! I and we will never stop thanking you, we truly do love and appreciate you!

Bang Bang Launches His New Book

This week, popular celebrity tattoo artist Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy celebrated the launch of his brand new book at his recently opened Lower East Side shop.

Bang Bang: My Life in Ink chronicles the artist’s rise from humble beginnings tattooing in his mother’s kitchen to tattooing Justin Bieber on a private jet. The book is a response to fans wanting not just one of his signature detailed small-scale tattoos, but also a look into his life.

“The people who are closest to me told me that the things [people are] asking the most are not about the celebrities, it’s more about my life,” he said, “where did I come from, how did I get here? What’s it like to be Bang Bang? So I was like, let me tell the world, because all they really know is my portfolio. Let me tell them about me and how I got here.”

Bang Bang didn’t quite realize how many people would resonate with his story.

“I didn’t think it would be an inspirational story, but that’s the feedback I’ve gotten,” said Bang Bang, “It’s such a cool feeling.”

The book combines an autobiographical dive into his life, including what he notes as a “troubled childhood,” with celebrity interviews, beautiful photographs and sections that look at the different tattoos and styles that he’s done. He thinks readers might be interested to learn about the journey that he’s made.

“I think for me what would be most surprising [to readers] are the things I was uncomfortable telling,” he said, “My troubled childhood and me being an unsuccessful kid, and how that impacted me and my confidence and you know, just how I stayed true to myself.”

The book also contains a forward written by Rihanna, who got her first Bang Bang tattoo when she was 17, just around the time “Pon de Replay” got popular. Rihanna is known to trust Bang Bang’s expertise over all.

“I almost tattooed a broken guitar with a pair of underwear on Rihanna,” he said, “and I made her leave with the stencil and I was like, ‘Go home and live with that for a bit.’ We never did it and it was the right call. She’ll tell you, I shut down the ideas when they’re not going to work.”

When asked what he would want people to know from his experiences, he lauded trusting your gut above all else.

“Your head can be a liar, your thoughts can take you places that you don’t want to go,” said Bang Bang, “Your gut–at least mine in particular–speaks the truth to me. It’s taken me everywhere in my career and more and more I’ve learned to trust it. And every time in my life I haven’t, I’ve regretted it. Right or wrong, you trust your gut, you learn about yourself and you’re confident in your decisions.”

Kylie Jenner Got a New Tattoo in the LES

The youngest Kardashian got a brand new tattoo from celebrity favorite Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy earlier this week.

Kylie Jenner, who is currently in New York and attended both Glamour’s Women of the Year awards ceremony to watch Caitlyn Jenner accept the award and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show where her sister Kendall walked runway, contacted Bang Bang to get a script tattoo on her hip with boyfriend Tyga in tow.

Bang Bang has tattooed many a celebrity, with Rihanna’s “shhh…” tattoo as a major factor in attracting celebrity clients like Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, Rita Ora and Miley Cyrus. His tattoo shop, whose name, like his own nickname, comes from his trademark gun tattoo on his neck, opened in 2014 on Broome Street and has quickly grown in popularity.

Kylie also got to preview Bang Bang’s new book and turns the tables by tattooing him. The artist has what he calls an “autograph leg,” and lets celebrities ink him after he inks them. He currently has an umbrella from Rihanna, a cartoon mouse from Beiber, a peppermint from Perry alongside others. Kylie went to work adding a red crown with the letter K right underneath it to Bang Bang’s collection.

Top Ten Women Underwear Ads

cara delevingne la perla

Cara Delevingne for La Perla

Victoria’s Secret may have claimed the tagline “What is Sexy?”, but it doesn’t mean that the brand defines the essence of what makes a sultry siren so seductive. These iconic underwear campaigns reveal the raw femininity that lies beneath the designer garments that these actresses and models are often photographed wearing. Now the age-old Hollywood saying is true – sex DOES sell, and as quickly as hemlines have gotten higher, lingerie shoots have become more risque than ever before. Call it tasteless if you will, but this form of marketing has become a symbol of liberation and even empowerment for women, baring their bodies with confidence. If wearing lacy underwear can make us feel as sexy as Eva Mendes or Megan Fox, then we’re not complaining! And we’re sure our male counterparts won’t have any objections either…

Best Looks From Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala

[slideshow_deploy id=’45878′]

The stars were dazzling last night at the annual Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala 2014 on the Upper East Side.

This year’s gala  honored  British-born designer Charles James, who revolutionized American fashion in the mid-20th century, along with iconic Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Celebrities ranging from First Lady Michelle Obama to Diane Von Furstenberg to Jessica Alba to Kim Kardashian walked the red carpet up into the lobby of the museum that was exquisitely decorated by an enormous mannequin covered with around 10,000 flowers that symbolized the beauty and elegance of the designs of the legendary couturier.

“The mind combines with the body to exploit its senses, its functions, its appearance,” James once said, and that philosophy was obvious in the beautiful gowns, poise and allure of the celebrities, luminaries and socialites that attended the event.

The event is widely regarded as one of the most exclusive social occasions in New York and one of the biggest fundraising nights of the city with a reported nine million dollars raised last year, alone.

Here are our picks for the top looks of the amazing evening.
