In John Varvatos’s world, music and fashion combine to create a lifestyle brand for those about to rock.

by Deborah L. Martin photography by Andrew Matusik

JOHN VARVATOS IS A ROCK AND ROLL guy, and he arrives at his Bowery flagship store
for our 8 am call time looking the part: skinny jeans, leather jacket, stone-cold stare. It’s clear that he hasn’t been in the store in a while and he busies himself with his team, doing some merchandising. “I don’t want these shirts like this. People don’t shop this way.” He’s walking around the store doing something that people who know retail understand. He is shaking things up. When we sit down to talk, I nd that this is a phrase he uses often, and it’s something he is proud of. “In my company, we hire a lot of young people, in the design studio, in sales, in the stores. It’s inspiring to be around. I’m someone who loves change and I’m so in there with them. I just want to shake shit up. I say it all the time, it’s in my DNA.”

As it turns out, the stone-cold stare is the public face, and behind that is a warm, funny guy who is a bit verklempt, and grateful, for the way his life has turned out.

John Varvatos the brand, and John Varvatos the man are both known for their rock and roll edge—from the musicians who have appeared in his ad campaigns to the New York flagship location in the former home of CBGBs, Varvatos has managed to weave his passions together in a way that eschews the normal ebb and ow of “fashion.” He says, “Music was my energy force as a young kid growing up in Detroit, in a 900-square-foot home with seven people. My escape was to put my headphones on—it transported me someplace else.” That love of music is the baseline for everything he does.

“I don’t really use the word fashion,” he says. “I talk about style. Our designs are inspired by my sense of rebelliousness and toughness, which is what rock and roll stands for.” He knows his customer. “Our guys range from Wall Street and business people to music artists, but they all have that creative bone.” He continues, “We don’t think about fashion of the moment. For me, style is more timeless. Our customer doesn’t need something obvious. They are the anti-obvious.”

And what about those musicians?

“They are probably the smallest part of our business, but thank goodness we have them, because they add a cool vibe.” Varvatos has called on some of those rockers to star in his ad campaigns. “All those people have become friends. They do it because they want to be associated with the brand. There’s no real money of any consequence attached to it, but they like the association, they like me, and we have a relationship. Like anything else, it has to be good for everyone. and it is good for them, as well.”

The list of names who have appeared reads like a list of inductees at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ziggy Marley, Ringo Starr, Kiss, Iggy Pop, Chris Cornell, Alice Cooper, Dave Matthews, Questlove, ZZ Top, Jimmy Page—the star-studded roster goes on and on. Varvatos says, “The guys from Kiss invited me to their farewell tour, and it’s the friendship that’s important. The thing I’m proudest and most humble about is that they consider me one of their own, and not just some fashion guy that’s trying to get rock stars to be in his ads.”Varvatos isn’t just “some fashion guy.” He started in Midwest sales for Ralph Lauren in 1983, and moved his way up the ladder, eventually taking a design post in New York. In 1990, he joined Calvin Klein, where he launched the menswear collection, the cK brand, and the hugely successful underwear line, in the process gifting the world with Mark Wahlberg in boxer briefs (which he invented by cutting the legs o long johns). After a short stint at London Fog, he rejoined Ralph Lauren as vice president in charge of men’s design for all Polo Ralph Lauren brands. In 1998 he joined Nautica Enterprises, who agreed to back his own brand, which launched in 1999

“These were great learning places for me.

I’m still close with Ralph and Calvin, and they respect what I do. When your mentors give you cred, it’s a humbling thing.” He chokes up a little when he says, “My wife ran into Ralph in the park and he told her, ‘I’m so proud of John, he really did what he said he was going to do.’”

He views the brand as a culture, and the Bowery store—once the site of one of the most infamous clubs in music history, CBGB & OMFUG—is a big part of that culture. “We are really thrilled with the people who come to visit the store because of its history. They want to come in and hang out and it’s all about the culture. That’s why we do concerts in the space. We clear out all of the clothes and turn it into a club again.”

In addition to the clothing, there is also the punk documentary produced with Iggy Pop, a music label, the annual Love Rocks concert for Gods Love We Deliver, relationships with AMFAR and Stuart House in LA, and a brand new tequila launch with friend, Nick Jonas. “I started the music label about four years ago, with Universal and Republic records. We signed the Zac Brown Band, and we had a multi-platinum album right out of the gate.” After leaving Universal, Varvatos teamed up with Scott Borchetta and created Big Machine John Varvatos Records. The label’s first band is a young group called Bad ower. Varvatos says, “They are one of the most incredible bands I’ve heard over the last 10 years. I was in LA in the spring and the kids were lining up for four hours before the show because they wanted to get the best place in the theater. When I saw that I had goosebumps. For me, it’s about helping young artists and their voice.” The label has just added another band out of Wales called Pretty vicious.

Varvatos friendship with Nick Jonas goes back to a dinner party where they were seated together.

“We realized we had a lot in common, including a love of tequila. The next day he called me and said ‘I’m in the recording studio and I’d like to play you some of the new music.’ When I got to the studio, there was a bottle of tequila sitting on the soundboard. For the next few hours, we drank tequila and talked about life.” The friendship developed into a fashion and fragrance collaboration and just this summer, villa One tequila was born. Varvatos says, “I’m proud of it, and of my friendship with Nick. He’s half my age but he has the heart and soul of someone who is much older.”

The success of the brand, and his passion for music have taken him on a wild ride. “To quote the Grateful Dead, it’s been a long strange trip. It was never a plan.
I wanted to be a musician but I wasn’t a good musician, I didn’t have a great voice. But I lived through the music and organically this happened.” He continues, “We didn’t even talk about rock and roll when we started the brand. And then suddenly Jimmy Page is calling and telling me he’s coming to New York and says he loves my stuff and wants to meet up. These people become friends because we have a similar core ethos.”

Varvatos is at the top of his game, enjoying the adventure, challenging himself and his brand. “Success isn’t just about the product. It’s about what you do that’s different from the rest. If you don’t do something different, there’s no reason for being. I am so blessed. I get to do all of these cool things that I never could have dreamed of as a kid. I’m so blessed.”

Reigning Queen of Candy Land, Dylan’s

My stores are what I imagine Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory would look like in real life meets Candyland and Disneyland,” says Dylan Lauren, The Reigning Queen of Candy Land and founder of Dylan’s Candy Bar. A fashion-forward sweet shop filled with a global array of chocolates, gummies, and other treats made by everyone from large-scale companies to mom-and-pop shops, chefs or new vendors like DO and Cracked, which are now available at the Union Square store. “I have added elements that are inspired by modern and pop art and increase the retailtainment factor: oversized lollipop trees, a staircase of backlit candy, walls with vibrant candy patterns, giant cupcakes you can dine in, a light changing ceiling of rainbow colors, spinning candy cane columns….”

Lauren opened her Manhattan Flagship Dylans Candy Bar in 2001. Since she has expanded to 21 locations, including Chicago, Houston, and Toronto. New this year are pop-ups at Madame Tussaud’s in Times Square and a boutique at Woodbury Common in upstate New York. Another addition, Dana’s Bakery, which is known for its delectable macarons, is opening a shop-in-shop on the bottom floor of Lauren’s Third Avenue flagship.

“Yes, it can be a bit overwhelming, but what keeps me grounded and focused is being consistent with my mission for the company and staying true to the brand,” says Lauren. “Our mission is to merge fashion, art and pop culture with candy to awaken the inner child and creative spirit in all. I love looking at candy and seeing all its beauty with the bright colors, unique shapes, sizes, awesome packaging and graphics, and then designing using those elements for bags, jewelry, spa products, mosaics, and cocktails.”

Creativity is something that runs in Lauren’s family—she is the daughter of legendary fashion designer Ralph Lauren and his wife, Ricky, an artist and author. “My parents understood the concept of Dylan’s Candy Bar from the very beginning, and knew that this was my passion,” Lauren says. “Growing up, I was obsessed with visiting unique candy shops while traveling around the world, and I loved creating candy art projects. They’ve always encouraged me to do what I loved because if you do what you love, you will be most successful.”projects.

My true passion is designing and color, with candy as the main medium.,

At Dylan’s Candy Bar, the founder’s fashion-family influence can be seen everywhere from the array of branded clothing and accessories to the cohesive blend of art, culture, and candy. “I enjoy learning from my father by watching him create collections or develop ideas for new products,” says Lauren. “While I have spent my life at Ralph Lauren events and often offer my suggestions for clothing, my true passion is designing and color, with candy as the main medium.”

Both of Lauren’s parents contributed to her entrepreneurial spirit. “My dad encouraged me to follow my gut and dream big, and urged me to create something that would wow people. He understood that this wasn’t going to be a typical candy shop, but instead the world’s largest candy store and lifestyle emporium,” she says. “My mom is very creative as an artist, photographer, and author. I was exposed to her appreciation of beautiful colors, gorgeous photos, and intelligent style of writing. Her creativity continues to help me formulate ideas, and it also inspired my book, Unwrap Your Sweet Life (Random House). And as a chocoholic herself, my mom has also introduced me to some great companies.”

Also important to the entire Lauren family is philanthropy—Lauren launched Dylan’s Candy BarN. A foundation aimed to help animals through raising funds and awareness for rescue organizations and hosting adoption events, including a recent drive with New York City shelter pets at the Union Square boutique. “Animals have always been a cause close to my heart, and this lifelong passion inspired me to launch Dylan’s Candy BarN,” Lauren says. “My grandparents would regularly give me a few dollars, and let me choose to either spend it or to give it to someone in need. My grandmother was a supporter of the ASPCA, and my parents have always placed an importance on giving.”

Recently, the Reigning Queen of Candy Land, Lauren appeared on an episode of Toy Box, coaching kid entrepreneurs—an exercise that inspired her to create more candy toys for her stores. Next up, she has her eye on more locations, including shopping destination SoHo. “I would love to have another New York City store, and design it to have its own unique aesthetic representative of the neighborhood,” she says. “I enjoyed designing the Union Square store with its downtown aesthetic, which is very different from our Third Avenue Flagship. The downtown store has black walls, silver glitter floors, light-changing ceiling, light up rotating rock candy and candy canes, and we play remixed dance versions of candy tunes. I like to think of it as a candy disco.

WITH NEW LOCATIONS AND COLLABORATIONS” as The Reigning Queen of Candy Land

Since 9/11, it’s been amazing to see the revitalization of New York,” she continues. “From FiDi and TriBeCa to NoHo and SoHo, there are new shops, restaurants, and activities that have brought Downtown back to life. New York City is a very different landscape than it was when I opened Dylan’s Candy Bar 16 years ago!”

She also makes an effort to encourage women entrepreneurs. “The candy industry is mostly dominated by men, so I made sure to surround myself with inspiring women with diverse backgrounds,” Lauren says. “Regardless of what industry you’re in, I recommend doing the same. When forming support systems, prioritize those who believe in you and your goals. Don’t be afraid to take risks. If you truly believe in the concept and surround yourself with a steady support system, anything is possible. Be con dent and always trust your intuition.” DT

SWEET DREAMS

A childhood passion for creative candy became a thriving, and innovative business for Dylan Lauren.

Women’s Spring/Summer 2017 Trend Report

The time machine is back in effect for the Spring 2017 collections. The 80’s redux, from metallics to mini lengths and strong shoulders at Erdem, Kenzo, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Monse, Rodarte, and Saint Laurent. Taking us back to the “I want my MTV’ and Reagan era. Yes the 80’s are back!

“Flower power” also took a major role. Big, bold, graphic and colorful floral prints were apparent at Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and more. Motorcross Mondrian-esque prints were also in effect. Speed racer inspired looks from Fendi, Proenza Schouler, to Sonia Rykiel and Versace alike. Fatigues are here to stay. Utilitarian is going on strong. Khakis and army greens at Balmain, Bottega Veneta, Celine, and Loewe, in ruffled greens, sheers and mini camo. Wanderlust looks in patch work, printed sweeping lengths, ruched and layered dresses took a play at Alberta Ferretti, Alexander McQueen, Chloe, Etro, Lanvin, Oscar De La Renta, Roberto Cavalli and Valentino.

Beyond the shadow of doubt, rose was the prominent color of Spring 2017. Rosy hues appeared on various runways. Strong feminine tones and silhouettes at Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Celine, Givenchy, Hermes, Jil Sander, Jason Wu, Ralph Lauren, Valentino and Vetements. As the majestic Diana Vreeland so gracefully once said: “Pink is the navy blue of India.”

Steal the Runway Look: Beauty on NYFW 2017

Screen Shot 2017-03-16 at 12.19.56 AM

Spring is to fashion what New Year’s is to resolutions. If Jan. 1 is a time to rethink our choices and swear to shed bad habits and adopt new, better ones; spring is the time when closet spring cleaning takes place – we leave our foolish fashion choices behind and adopt new ones. As soon as the first heel clicks on Fashion Week runways, we know what will be in and what will be cast aside in the upcoming season.

So, let’s see what the near future holds for all the fashionistas, makeup junkies and hairdo lovers.

Alive and in Color!

If you have secretly been longing for the colors of the ‘80s, great news bright-hue lovers – pink is back and better than ever. Powerhouses like Balenciaga, Celine, Valentino and many others were proud to present a range of dresses ranging from frilly and feminine to straight and edgy geometric lines in all possible variations of pink. The best part – all of these looks are completely wearable and worthy of a million street-style hashtag likes.

Another unmissable presence were the evergreen stripes. Diagonal, horizontal, vertical, wide, narrow, monochromatic or colorful – take your pick. And they will make their mark on every single item of clothing, from dresses and pants to blouses and shorts. They will even make it as far as beachwear.

It is safe to say that it is time to get stripy.

Faux and real fur lovers – rejoice because the eternal style staple, the fur coat has been seen strutting down the runway with ready-to-wear looks.

Of course, we must not forget to mention the powerful feminist messages with shirts with “we should all be feminists” dominating the catwalk.

It is a great year to be a woman.

As for those who look for fashion inspiration for the upcoming season in the runways of New York, the Fashion Week of the Big Apple has shown us that simple and feminine lines will dominate the streets of Manhattan, in minimalistic cuts and colors, namely black and white.

According to one of the US’s influential designers, Marc Jacobs cheeky sweaters and insanely high platforms will rule the streets styles this spring, so if you were missing the ‘90s vibe, now you have an excuse to bring it back to life, while Ralph Lauren predicts the revival of the western cowboy theme.

Oh, My, Makeup!

We are in utter and complete awe of the variety of beauty looks slaying the runways of Paris, London and Milan fashion week. And while some of them were very artistic and almost conceptual, there were also those that are bound to dominate the urban landscape once makeup lovers head to the streets.

The Milan shows have showed that it is ok to be eclectic and electric, as the eyelids of models were beaming with day-glo fuchsia, neon-lavender, pastel blue across the entire  lid (pretty bold),and also bright blue, and yellow hues done in a cutting-edge geometric style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV6G9LQxw9o

Ladies, if you did not dab in bright eye colors and pigments before, it is time to get bold, and get a serious upgrade in the makeup and cosmetics department. Since the focus on the Milan runways was mostly on bold eye looks, the lips were left almost untouched or simply with a healthy-looking balm pout.

If you look at the beauty dominating one of the most important fashion weeks – Paris, you will notice that the focus was also on the eyes, but in a somewhat different fashion. Precision was not the focal point and the smudged and vamp looks accompanied with dark eye shadows, liners and eye pencils were the rule.

There were however more natural looks as well, like the one on Gigi Hadid with her healthy, almost ethereally dewy look for the Isabel Marant show, so if you are a believer in the no-makeup makeup look, Gigi shows you how to rock it, supermodel style.

When it comes to the beauty looks, there is a lot of inspiration to draw from this season’s runways of New York. From natural no-makeup makeup looks of Ralph Lauren to bold lips and fierce dark blue smokey eyes seen on models walking for Mischka and vivid brights of Oscar De La Renta, there is a whole variety of looks to snag for yourself, so if there is anything you would like to try, now is the time to rethink your makeup and cosmetics choices and add new items to your shopping cart.

After seeing the crème de la crème of this year’s runway looks, the only question that needs answering is – Which one of these things did you miss, and will be stocking up on this spring?
