Trend Report Tuesday: SAG Awards 2018 Red Carpet

On Sunday night, January 21, 2018, the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. Hosted by Kristen Bell, the award show honored the best achievements in film and television performances for the year of 2017.

The SAG Awards has become a prestigious event and one of the industry’s most prized honors. The show presents 13 awards that focus on awarding individual performances as well as the entire ensemble of a serious (drama and comedy) and the cast of a motion picture. It is the only televised awards show to exclusively honor performers, according to the Screen Actors Guild Awards website.

You can find the full list of 2018 SAG Awards winners here.

But, of course, the red carpet moments prior to the award show were a significant part of the night. The fashion of past red carpets over the past year is hard to beat, but we were obsessed with numerous looks throughout the night and felt like it was an overall successful night for style (but, of course, there were some looks that went completely wrong).

Compared to the black-out from the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards red carpet was more vivid and lively, but still full of fierce, jaw-dropping moments. Each dress seemed so unique to the specific attendee and several celebrities completely stole the show, looking as glamorous as ever.

Here are some of Downtown’s favorite looks from Sunday night’s SAG Award Show red carpet. Our #1 best dressed goes to Mandy Moore, looking absolutely flawless in a shimmery cobalt blue dress. Fabulous.

Prada shakes things up with the David O. Russell-directed “Past Forward”

As discussed in a recent article by Jen King for Luxury Daily, Prada is creating more than just high-end fashion. The Italian brand is asking viewers to decode what is experience, what is memory and what is dream in its new David O. Russell-directed short film. Starring Allison Williams, Kuoth Wiel and Frida Pinto, Past Forward was first premiered via Instagram’s Stories app feature, targeted towards users in New York, London and Tokyo.

In analyzing why a brand like Prada would aim a new campaign at social media users, Vertic founder/CEO Sebastian Jespersen explained: “Social media, and specifically Instagram have a larger share of a user’s life…If you compare how much time you spent on Instagram for example compared to how much time you spent at a gallery, or at a movie theater, you would realize that a big chunk of your information needs is satisfied through social media.”

Surrounding its new fragrance launch — La Femme Prada for women and L’Homme Prada for men — Prada has developed a marketing concept that features “multiple women and men, but who are shown to have interchangeable identities.”

As part of the campaign’s video, La Femme Prada and L’Homme Prada are presented as a “pair of equals” with their scents serving as an “olfactory map” for true masculinity and true femininity. Prada’s video for the La Femme et L’Homme Prada line was shot by photographer Steven Meisel, as featuring actress Mia Wasikowska. Ansel Elgort stars in the L’Homme Prada video.

The Price of Going to Fashion Week in Milan

prada-backstage-first-look-fall-2014-milan-fashion-week-1

Models backstage at Prada’s Fall/Winter 2014 show in Milan

Unless you are Anna Wintour or a famous celebrity, front row seats to Fashion Week certainly do not come cheap. Prepare to dig deep into your bank account, because the chance to be seated among the glamorous in-crowd to watch the likes of Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Prada and Miu Miu can be yours….all for the meager pricetag of $25,000.

That’s right. As part of Watermill Center’s Summer Auction, two Fashion Week packages are available for purchase online. Proceeds will help fund the Watermill Center’s Hamptons gallery, where artists exhibit their works for free. Investing in these coveted packages will provide you with two front-row tickets to the Fendi, Prada and Giorgio Armani shows, as well as two-front row tickets to the Miu Miu show in Paris. If you are feeling thrifty, the starting bid for the latter is $10,000.

Perhaps you might feel less inclined to compete for these tickets. If so, fret not, because the “buy it now” option allows you to buy these packages for $95,000 and $25,000 respectively. That is not to say that big spenders won’t hesitate to shell out a pretty penny in exchange for an exclusive view of the runway.

Has the realm of fashion reached its pinnacle of extravagance? You decide.
