The Food Movement is Growing (and Winning)

by Fernanda Mueller

Founded in 2013, by the world-renowned researchers and speakers, Danielle Nierenberg and Bernard Pollack, Food Tank has helped to highlight innovative ideas to improve our food system, like regenerative agriculture, food access, and affordability, creating better policy and preventing food waste. Besides the active online presence, the Food Tank’s Summits have hosted hundreds of speakers to get people’s attention to the subject.

The 2019 New York Food Tank Summit

This year’s summit took place at New York University, on November 1st and 2nd. Among the speakers were leaders like James Rogers, a scientist that is mimicking nature to prevent food loss and waste – at Apeel‘s website you can learn more about how this technology works; Jyoti Stephens, representing Nature’s Path, a company that relies on regenerative and organic agriculture practices to restore soils and landscapes; Haile Thomas, a 18-year-old chef, author and activist on health, CEO of HAPPY (Healthy Active Positive Purposeful Youth); besides many journalists and writers that are doing a great work reporting about these issues and making people aware of it.

One of the highlights of the event was when Mark Bittman, author of How to Cook Everything and editor-in-chief of Heated, took the stand to talk about the importance of food policy. After all, eating is a political act. He also talked about how many companies say they care about the environment and people’s health, when they’re not actually helping.

“Pepsi doesn’t really do anything good. Mcdonald’s says they want to do better, but they have to show up. Should these companies exist? Give me a magical wand and they are gone.” – Mark Bittman.

The Hottest Trends from the International Beauty Show

This March, the 17th annual International Beauty Show and International Esthetics, Cosmetics, and Spa Conference hit NYC with everything from sparkly eye shadow and face masks to hair extensions and TENS devices. Here are some of the most exciting and eye catching trends we spotted on the show floor.

LeBody Form Body Massager

The show floor was full of various TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) devices. They start out simple and work their way up to this LeBody Form massager, specifically designed to operate at EMS mid-frequencies from 1,000–10,000 Hz. At these frequencies, the stimulation helps strengthen muscles and increases energy consumption. Basically, LeBody says that using the Form for ten minutes is the equivalent of more sit-ups than most of has have probably done in our lives. You can use it to relieve a sore muscle, or strap it around your waist while you’re doing dishes to build muscle and burn fat.

Nelly De Vuyst Cosmos Certified Products

We all know how important clean beauty is, and Nelly De Vuyst is taking it a step further with their COSMOS certified products. The products meet the highest standards for organic and natural ingredients, and, best of all, actually work. Their BioTense, BioAcne, and BioFemme lines all meet the requirements for COSMOS certification, and the BioAcne and BioFemme lines are also certified organic by Ecocert. Although the Canadian-made products are not available to consumers, be on the lookout for Nelly De Vuyst products at your favorite Tri-State area spas. We especially love the BioAcne Serum, which comes in an easy-to-use roller ball applicator and can be used all day.

LightStim LED Therapy

LED devices were all over the show this season. Like me, you might be wondering how light, which we’ve always been told is bad for out skin when it comes to the sun, can actually heal sun damage and other skin issues. LightStim delivers UV free light to the skin in different wavelengths that increase blood circulation and target things like fine lines, wrinkles, and mild to moderate acne. LightStim can also be used to relieve minor muscle and joint pain, mild arthritis, and muscle spasms by temporarily increasing local blood circulation and relaxing the muscles. The LED products come in handheld lights, panel lights, and even a full bed. Consumers can purchase wands for in home use, while spa technicians can purchase all of the products, which each come with a certification class.

GM Collin City D-Tox

Best known for their anti-aging serum capsules and partnership with the Oscars, GM Collin is an award winning line committed to effective, safe products. Their newest product is perfect for the busy New Yorker who is always running between the subway and other crowded city venues. The City D-Tox Serum and Eye Contour Gel provide the ultimate solution against pollution while hydrating skin and reducing wrinkles. Head to these spas to pick up your own pollution fighting duo.

Éminence Organic Skincare

Tons of booths offered plant-based, sustainable skincare products, but none was more crowded than Éminence Organic Skincare, a Hungarian brand that has been around since 1958. Their sustainable farming and green practices have made their handmade, natural, organic, Biodynamic products a favorite, and their B-Corp Certification means they aren’t just throwing those words around. Their products come in formulas that are both effective and flavorful like the strawberry-rhubarb hydrating and replenishing masque, lilikoi (passionfruit) sport sunscreen, andcitrus and kale vitamin masque. Spas all over the city use Éminence products in their treatments, you’ll recognize them for their tantalizing aromas!

Belle Bar is Empowering Women of Color with All Natural, Handmade Skin and Haircare Products from New York

Belle Bar is a women owned and run beauty company led by Tianna Bell along with her sister Solange and mother Annette. They make organic, customizable skin and haircare for women of color using all natural ingredients to create products that are handmade to order. Their products feature ingredients you’ve actually heard of and help with hair damage, hair growth, and even clear skin. We chatted with Tianna Bell about how they got started, how New York plays into their business, and their all natural process.

Downtown: What was the impetus for this brand?

Tiana Bell: Our mission every day is to make green beauty accessible for women of color. We do that with the content we make, the products we create, and how we communicate with our customers. Our goal is to educate women of color on how to take care of themselves and how to reconnect with nature, which in turn will help them reconnect with themselves. We believe green beauty and wellness is a conduit for self-confidence.

Downtown: How did you all decide to go into business as a family?

TB: All we ever had was each other. It was natural for us to work together, as we already have each other’s trust and confidence. It was grace that we all happened to be good at different areas of the business, which made us a great founding team.

Downtown: What is different about a company catering to the WOC community?

TB: Most companies that create products for WOC communities are made up of teams not consisting of women of color. Truly catering to the WOC community means creating products that “do no harm,” it means using images and language that empowers, it means celebrating us. Not only is it important for our society to cater to marginalized communities, it is also good business as these communities, especially women of color, have strong purchasing power.

Downtown: How do you decide what goes into your products?

TB: Annette Bell, head of product development is in charge of deciding which all-natural ingredients go into our products. She is a self-taught herbalist and is obsessed with studying the benefits of flowers, herbs, fruits, plants, and vegetables. She typically goes through many rounds of testing before she settles on her final recipes.

Downtown: What even is a hair mask?!?

TB: A hair mask is essentially a deep conditioning treatment. What makes our hair masks different is that the treatment is made from dehydrated ingredients. Our masks need to be activated by a fresh ingredient such as a conditioner you already love or a complete all natural ingredient such as blended pumpkin, banana, or avocado. This allows our hair masks to truly be effective as they are customized for each customer.

Downtown: What’s it like working in New York?

TB: While my sister and I are first-generation Americans, my mother and rest of the family are from Trinidad & Tobago. New York is all about grit, hustle, competition, and dreaming. To make it here you have to have the drive to fight your way to the top. We were raised with that drive. Now we are using it to help others with our mission.

Downtown: What are a few of the ingredients your most excited about?

TB: Some of our favorite ingredients are: Neem (an herb that smells like a foot but is one of the most healing ingredients you will come across), Marshmallow Root (creates that ultimate “slip” all curly girls need to detangle and soften their hair), Chebe Powder, which we source straight from Africa (Chebe powder is traditionally made by different African tribes, primarily in Sudan and Chad, where women apply the powder to their hair with oil and never wash it out).

Light Bites With a Nutritious Punch

Humans are creatures of habit. Many find themselves ordering the same meals, at the same restaurants, day in and day out even though these choices are repetitive, and are often lacking the variety, and nourishment that bodies crave. Why be bored when there are nutritious, and tasty alternatives right under your nose? Here are some local light bites that will leave you and your body fueled and satisfied.

Honeybrains

The restaurant puts science and heart into its culinary creations. 3 siblings, one of whom is a neurologist,  created the restaurant. The trio seeks to make foods that are beneficial to both body and brain health. The menu is composed of the Honeybrains’ 5 food groups; vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and foods high in Omega 3s. Honeybrains then transforms its 5 food groups with, spices, fermented foods, and natural sweeteners to create a delicious and beneficial meal. Honeybrains will serve up a dish that will keep your body going, and keep you coming back for more.

Made Fresh Daily Bakeshop

Made Fresh Daily Bakeshop lives up to its name. Ingredients are natural and the shop exclusively uses organic dairy, local eggs, unrefined sugars, and unbleached flours. For lunch, they offer multiple soups, frittatas, salads, and sandwiches with quick, friendly, and consistent service. The energy is casual, contrasting the busy streets of the financial district, and making Made Fresh Daily the perfect lunchtime relief from a busy mornings work.

Souen

Souen is an organic macrobiotic restaurant that has been serving harmonious food to New Yorkers since 1971. The eatery follows the ideology that local, seasonal grains and vegetables will nourish physical health, spiritual health, and will benefit one’s relationship with nature. This ideology guides their cooking, but the restaurant never sacrifices flavor for health. Souen uses unrefined, unprocessed foods like brown rice, beans, fresh fish, and tofu to enhance the taste and health benefits of traditional Japanese dishes.

Dimes

This restaurant, located on 49 Canal Street, is unassuming and quirky.  The space has a retro feel and a laid-back ambiance that makes it easy to walk past, but worth stopping for. Its patrons may feel at ease inside the small restaurant, but the food is hard-hitting with flavor and generous portion sizes. At Dimes, you can eat healthy food without realizing that you are in a health-conscious restaurant.

Mulberry and Vine

Mulberry and Vine’s restaurant’s motto is, “Live dirty eat clean.” Their location on 73 Warren St. is helping people live up to the restaurant’s advice. One of the most popular options is the pick 3 plate. Customers can choose 3 filling vegetable dishes, or 2 vegetables and 1 protein to create their own combo meal nutritiously. It may be difficult to choose just 3.

Switch up your summer eating routine by trying one of these light bites to satisfy your hunger, and to nourish your body. If you want more healthful summer suggestions, click here for summer snacking options.

Direct Eats Delivers Healthy, Natural Foods Right to Your Door

Direct Eats hosts smaller vendors as well, Photo Courtesy of Direct Eats

Direct Eats doesn’t deliver takeout; the website boasts a collection of healthy and specialty food items for your household at low per-item costs.

Founder David Hack got the idea from his own life.

“It actually started originally with my wife,” said Hack, “she was at Whole Foods and wanted a box of Luna bars and realized you couldn’t just simply buy a box of Luna bars; you literally had to take every Luna bar out of the box, have them scan it individually—you got no price breaks for buying it in any kind of mass or bulk or bundle and that’s really kind of what initiated the idea.”

Basically, Direct Eats creates a personalized food shopping experience where customers can filter products based on what they want and their dietary restrictions. They can then buy bulk quantities of their favorite products—or new finds—at extremely low prices. It’s a Costco you don’t need to buy a membership for; an Amazon for specialty foods.

“You’re going to get ten times the selection at half the price of Whole Foods,” says Hack, “That’s a winning proposition for most consumers.”

Shoppers can find all of their favorites alongside smaller brands.

“You can have everything that a Whole Foods carries of course, you’re going to get your Amy’s, your Luna bars, whatever you want,” said Hack, “but you’re also going to discover all kinds of new and exciting things from all over the country.”

Though larger brands are on the site, Hack is excited for the smaller vendors as well.

“The idea is that we take local and make that national,” said Hack, “We take the best of the best from across the country and allow every consumer to get access to it.”

With over 25,000 products currently on the website, there’s certainly a wide selection. According to Hack, that number is increasing fast.

“We are growing at around 500 products or so every day,” he said, “we’ll have north of 50,000 products in the next year, which is roughly 5-10 times bigger as far as pantry stuff than Whole Foods.”

The site’s unique filtering method makes it simple to adhere to dietary needs. With options ranging from nut-free to vegan to fair trade, all kinds of consumer needs can be easily found.

“I think at the end of the day, everyone has so many specific health needs and whether that’s gluten free or peanut free—which in some cases can be life threatening—this could totally make their world about them, not about what’s best for the store,” said Hack.

In the end, Direct Eats makes it simple for people to stock their pantry with good quality, natural foods at low prices, additionally offering free shipping to anywhere in the continental United States.

“We’re healthy food shoppers,” said Hack about his own family, “as parents, we want to make the best decisions for our five kids so that they have the best choices and the best food.”
