VOLTA NY Brings A World of Art to Metropolitan West

VOLTA NY brings some of the world’s greatest contemporary art to one of the greatest cities in the world. With new leadership, new ownership, and a new venue, Downtown Magazine caught up with VOLTA’s director Kamiar Maleki to find out about what is new, and what attendees can expect.

Downtown Magazine: What excites you about being the fair director for VOLTA 2020?

Kamiar Maleki: 2020 is a great new chapter for VOLTA and it’s very exciting to lead this year’s fair. VOLTA has showcased in New York for 15 years and this year we are returning with new ownership by Ramsay Fairs and a new venue at Metropolitan West. It’s exhilarating to be back in New York City for 2020 and to experience the energy and art community of New York. VOLTA has always been about discovering art and emerging galleries and that’s one of the main reasons I love being part of this fair as fair director.

DM: What does Ramsay Fairs bring to the table for VOLTA 2020?

KM: The beauty of Ramsay Fairs is that it is such a large family. Ramsay Fair operates over 15 art fairs and has a huge team across the world. Having such a strong group allows everyone to really concentrate and invest in the fairs we are creating. It’s an exciting time to be part of Ramsay Fairs and VOLTA and to share Ramsay Fair’s passion for art with the world.

DM: What is a big change which you are excited for returning attendees to see?

KM: The biggest change that we are seeing this year is the change we’ve made to our solo project mandate. This new change will allow galleries to showcase multiple artists and have the freedom to create and prepare presentations similar to what they would stage at their home galleries without the solo project restriction, resulting in a more balanced fair.

DM: What is something which you are excited for newcomers to discover?

KM: VOLTA is a very engaging fair and we want each new gallery to have a personalized experience. As a director, my job is to create a platform for artists to showcase their art in the best possible way. We want them to fully experience the staff and incredible team we have here. They have worked hard to create this platform in an exciting new venue. We have worked to focus the entire fair on the artists and their works and are looking forward to welcoming several new galleries this year.

DM: How will debuting VOLTA 2020 at the Metropolitan West affect the atmosphere of the event?

KM: Metropolitan West is a very intimate venue and we are confident that this new location will promote an immersive fair experience and encourage fairgoers to interact with the galleries and spend time learning about the artworks. Fairs can become overwhelming quite easily. Debuting the fair at Metropolitan West this year creates a peaceful atmosphere that allows attendees to appreciate the art at their leisure.

DM: What makes VOLTA culturally important?

KM: The root of VOLTA is discovery and in any industry, discovery is what makes something culturally important. This year, we are excited to welcome a dynamic group of galleries from five continents that are showcasing artists from 22 nations. It’s incredible to give these international emerging artists a space to showcase their work in one of the world’s largest cities.

DM: What should attendees know before arriving?

KM: Come in and enjoy! We encourage attendees to take their time and observe what artwork they connect with and speak to the artists and galleries. The fair is built on artistic discovery and we hope that guests are able to learn something and enjoy their time at VOLTA.

HIGH STREET ON HUDSON

Where can you find a chemical engineer and a would-be forensic psychologist collaborating on a tartine?

High Street on Hudson, the all-day restaurant in the West Village, where head baker and partner Melissa Weller and chef Mary Attea have teamed up to revamp the menu.

HIGH STREET ON HUDSON
Chef Weller By Ryan Liu

I met Chef Weller and Attea at GrowNYC Grains in the Union Square Greenmarket to pick up 25-pound sacks of einkorn, the world’s oldest known variety of wheat. Weller makes a dense bread with einkorn flour and whole grains that she slices thinly for the base of the tartine she and Attea collaborated on.

We also picked up a bunch of breakfast radishes from Eckerton Hill Farm in Berks County, PA and beautiful radish microgreens from Windfall Farms of Montgomery, NY.

Weller’s einkorn loaf is best the day after it is baked.

The untoasted slices are slathered with a thick layer of butter that Attea has infused with lemon. Chunky slices of pink radishes are topped with shaved breakfast radishes and microgreens. Another splash of lemon covers the dish before Attea cuts open a beautiful soft boiled egg and showers the whole thing in Bottarga, a luxurious cured mullet roe beloved by chefs. The radish tartine is a dish that truly reflects Weller and Attea’s new partnership.

High Street on Hudson is an all-day neighborhood restaurant and cafe founded around the love of bread.  Our ovens and bakery are the center of our kitchen starting from the pastries in the morning, freshly baked breads for sandwiches and salads at lunch, to the bread to sop up your chicken at dinner. Our bread, all made from locally sourced grains, is baked fresh on-site daily.  Located in NYC on the border of the West Village and the Meatpacking District, High Street is right off the High Line around the corner from the Whitney Museum of Art.  Pick up a loaf or join us for a glass of wine and cheese.

The Man Behind the Museum of Interesting Things

Denny Daniel poses in his downtown home with a “Bones and Ribs” record from Russia

Denny Daniel is a self-identifying “downtown kid.”  He is also the owner and founder of The Museum of Interesting Things. Daniel takes the museum to the visitors and brings curiosity and education with him.

The Museum of Interesting Things travels to schools, adult centers, camps, and any other location where moldable minds may be. Denny Daniel arrives with themed collections that invite visitors to interact with, to question, and to understand history through objects. The museum offers multiple collections and covers a wide range of topics such as the history of music, the history of quack medicine, the history of black inventors, and the history of suffragettes. There is no limit to the number of interesting things in existence. Denny Daniels wants his show to be able to teach people something impactful and thought-provoking every visit. The variety of his collections, and of his collectibles, helps him achieve this goal.

“I want to be able to entertain myself forever. I want to be able to entertain the kids, and us, my staff, everyone, forever and ever. Then you always have something to do. Always have something to show. That’s why we call it the Museum of Interesting Things”,  said Daniel

Denny Daniel started off his career by hosting parties in his own apartment and showing off his impressive collection to friends. Ever since then he has been using the power of objects and the narratives of history to teach people of any age, and of any background, about the past and how antiques can help us understand our present and future.

A phonographic cylinder

“When we did these parties a lot of the people were really cool, interesting, intellectuals. Sometimes it would take until 4 a.m and a lot of alcohol to get them to agree or to understand this or that. Antiques do it in a heartbeat. People walk in with that beautiful smile, the same one you had, that says ‘I’m happy and I’m curious.’ I love that. All of a sudden I didn’t have to tell them who to vote for, to be a Republican, Democrat, where to go, what to say, liberal, conservative. It does not matter in fact. I got the same beautiful thing just by doing this…….” Denny Daniel proceeded to wind up a phonograph cylinder from the 1880s (pictured right). A song began to fill the small room packed with educational treasures.

“Every one of these items has 3 ingredients. The magic of the person who made it, the magic of the people who have owned it, and the magic of us buying these antiques and giving them new life”, per Daniel.

The Museum also has a small physical location downtown where visitors can interact, by appointment, with antique objects from all over the world. Additionally,  Denny Daniel hosts monthly speakeasies to raise money for the traveling museum.  The very first Museum of Interesting Things speakeasy featured 16 mm films, prohibition artifacts, and a bottle of sealed prohibition liquor. The theme for the September Speakeasy has not yet announced, but it sure to inspire, and to entertain curious minds of all ages. Check the Museum of Interesting Thing’s website for the next theme, date, and location.

Denny Daniels has been featured on “Pawn Stars”, “The Science Chanel”, and “PBS.” He is also an organizer for the NY Steampunk Society, a member of the nineteenth-century society and is a proud NYU alum.  Above all, he is a dedicated and welcoming downtowner. “It is a complement to be comfortable in my home”, said Daniels. His fascinating home is located in an equally dynamic area to live. “This is where everything is. I am close to Soho, close to the Village. This is where life is, this is where energy is and I am never selling this apartment!” said Daniel.

The Museum of Interesting Things and its founder are educating children and adults alike with the help of tools borrowed from time. Denny Daniels reminds us that learning can be, and should be, fun.
