Couples Who Sweat Together, Stay Together

Working out as a couple is a great idea and has many benefits. First and foremost, a “couple” workout doesn’t necessarily have to be with your significant other; it can be a friend, a mentor, or anyone that you are comfortable with.  For starters, couples often don’t get enough ‘alone time’ or are always preoccupied and stressed. Going to the gym is an activity that is ideal to share with a significant other. With fitness, motivation is always important, and what better motivation to have than a loved one.

The benefits of working out will aid the body and mind of both individuals, and communication is bound to improve between the two. The exercise itself has potential to have both a physical and emotional positive impact. Working out also promotes less stress, better sleep and a sharp brain. This is a win-win for everyone. Couples feel better about themselves and each other, while the energy between them flows smoothly. Add endorphins to all this goodness and no couple can refuse this idea. Endorphins spice up the relationship and keep both individuals at a positive level.

Sometimes, the two individuals can be into completely different kinds of workouts. If your guy only likes to lift and you want to do some cardio or yoga, there’s a clear solution. The key is to pick a full body workout that both of parties would enjoy, like boxing or cross-fit. If it is new to both, then it’s all the better. Going on a new journey together adds to the harmony as a couple.

There are several celebrities who like to work out together and it helps both of them. For instance, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth often jog together. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel bike and jog together. Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady hike together. These are fun activities that can easily fit into busy schedules and help couples bond deeper.

That said, here are some a few partner exercises to try out:

Partner Pushups

You start by facing each other in pushup position. After you do each pushup, you high five each other using the same hand. This makes you hold the position longer and ultimately challenges you. You also support each other by being there for each other. When you high five, you keep each other going— what’s one more pushup?

Partner Situps

You start by having your legs face each other— intertwine your legs so that you can support each other’s body weight. After each sit up, have your hands meet your partner’s hands. You know you have a pair of hands waiting at the end of each sit up, so you’re less likely to keep your partner hanging!

Partner Leg Exercise- Step Ups

This exercise is done by each person standing on opposite sides of an elevated surface, like a bench. You shouldn’t be facing each other directly; rather you should be positioned diagonally. Then step up on the elevated surface with the inner leg that is between the both of you, while holding each other’s hands for support. When you’re done, switch sides and do the other leg.

These couple workouts are bound to make you and the other person more fit; both physically and emotionally. So grab your partner or friend, and try working out together for a change!

SailGP Final Day New York

Achieving success in NYC is a challenge in any endeavor, so why should Sailing be any different?

SailGP Final Day New York

As smoothly stated by an exuberant Nathan Outteridge, CEO and Helmsman of Team Japan, winner of this weekend’s SailGP: “This race in NY harbor is so much fun precisely because it is so difficult. Our team looked forward to this race all season.”

With strong tidal currents, inconsistent and undulating winds due to our concrete mountains, and similarly caused wind shadows that serve as emergency brakes for these sailboats, NY harbor proved an immense challenge. Even for the best sailors on this planet. Team Japan won this weekend’s trophy because they most effectively adapted to these challenging circumstances.

The beauty of SailGP as a sport is precisely this ability to create conditions wherein the human element and skill are the deciding factor. All boats are analogous. It is not an arms race to surpass competitors through excessive budgets and signing bonuses. Rather, the technology is jointly developed, and the best team wins.

SailBP Final Day New York

This weekend that team was Team Japan, Nathan Outteridge, Iain Jensen, Tim Morishima, Yugo Yoshida, Yuki Kasatani, Leo Takahash, Luke Parkinson, winning 3 of 5 races as well as the eventual final versus Australia. Skipper Outteridge proved himself the maestro of a well-orchestrated troupe of athletes.

Team USA pleased their local fan base by pulling out a convincing victory in Saturday’s second race, causing an eruption of U.S.A chants by supporters that lined the promenade from Chambers Street to the Battery.

A special mention must be given to the Coast Guard, as well as the NYPD Harbor Unit, for redirecting harbor traffic seamlessly all weekend.

Finally, a warm thank you to the folks at SailGP. Class acts.

We look forward to seeing you next year!

16 Essential Supplies Every New York Restaurant Needs

So you want to open up a restaurant. Great! We’re going to go out on a limb and assume you’re already aware you need some commercial equipment. But what exactly are the absolute must-haves?

1. A commercial refrigerator/freezer

You’re going to have to store some perishables, obviously. Whether it’s a walk-in, or a reach in, you need a commercial refrigerator. Not the type you have at home, but a professional restaurant-grade fridge, like the ones you can see here. It’s important that you factor in just how much food you plan to store at any given time, when you decide on the size of the fridge to get.

2. A commercial oven

Depending on what you’ll be serving in your restaurant, an oven is a great investment. Generally, a convection oven is great to have, whatever kind of food you may be serving. Whether you’re baking, or roasting it cooks your food quickly, and uniformly.

3. A commercial ice machine

Ice is important. From storing your food, to serving up delicious drinks, you need to have ice on hand. But as with all restaurant equipment, it’s essential that you keep your ice maker perfectly maintained.

4 A multipurpose griddle

Griddles can be used to cook any meal, from eggs and pancakes, wraps, and burgers, to steak, seafood, and pasta. The griddle is also great for steaming, smoking, and searing food to lock in flavor, The versatility of the griddle makes it essential equipment to have.

5. A commercial deep fat fryer

Serving some fried food? A commercial deep fat fryer would be good to have since you can fry a lot in one go. If you’ve got limited space to work with, then a countertop fryer will do. There are also free-standing fryers, with filters which remove particles from the oil; induction fryers, oil-free fryers, and specialty fryers. The kind you go for would depend on what you’ll be serving.

6 An industrial dishwasher

You’re only going to have so many hands on deck to help with washing. The last thing you need is to run out of clean dishes, or worse, run out of unbroken dishes. So, do your business a favor and get one – whether it’s compact, or a conveyor-belt washer, heat-sterilizing, or chemical-sterilizing.

7. Counters

You’re going to have people chopping, cutting, mixing, and dishing. They’ll need space to do it. Enter the counter. Because you’re not going to cook on the floor. Obviously.

8. Grease traps

The last thing you need is your plumbing getting backed up, because of  grease and other food particles. Attaching grease traps to kitchen equipments connected to your plumbing, will spare you a lot of trouble with blockages.

9. Professional kitchen knives

You already know there are various knives designed for different purposes. Bread knives, chopping knives, meat cleavers, all are essential. Get good ones, with comfy, ergonomic handles, that allow you cut as long and as much as you need to.

10. Squeeze bottles

You’ll need these to hold your condiments, dressings, sauces, and oils.

11. Commercial shelving

Kitchen shelves, and racks, are needed for storing your spices and other things within easy reach, and efficiently. As with all commercial-grade food service equipment, it’s best to stock up on your commercial shelves from a professional restaurant equipment supplier. Suitable shelving can go a long way in making a commercial kitchen organized and functional.

12. Carts and trolleys

Great for moving your food about easily, especially if you’ve got a lot of orders that need to be served at once.

13. Stainless steel wash basins

These will be needed every day, whether you’re washing cooking equipment, or prepping food. Consider having a few of these strategically placed, to encourage your employees to wash their hands often.

14. Commercial holding cabinets

These are great for keeping meals warm, and preventing them from drying out. This will serve you, especially if your restaurant will have a high volume of customers.

15. Furniture

Needed, unless your restaurant is doing something quirky like having customers eat while sitting on the floor. Keep in mind whether your restaurant is an outdoor or indoor one, so you can get furniture that works. You want to make sure your furniture is comfy, while fitting in with the aesthetics of the restaurant, and your brand as well.

16. Food prep equipment

This runs the gamut, from cooking utensils, blenders, juicers, slicers, mixers, timers, and thermometers, to pots, pans, bowls, storage containers, and labels.

Sail GP comes to Downtown, New York

SailGP hits Downtown with gusto this weekend, June 21-22, 2019.

Imagine placing Formula 1 racing, ESPN Extreme Sports and beautiful harbors in a blender and pressing purée. The result is supercharged foiling (that means they actually “lift” off the water’s surface and fly!) catamarans that are technological marvels. Six nations (USA, Japan, Great Britain, France, China, and the Aussies) go head-to-head seeking to claim the SailGP global championship.

The USA Team:

Keeping It Real with Joanna Vargas

From her sprawling, 14,000-square-foot luxury day spa, on New York City’s Fifth Avenue, the beloved aesthetician to the superstars is definitely glowing a little brighter lately.

Joanna Vargas NYC Salon

Joanna Vargas stands tall at five-foot-ten—well, at least that’s what she projects, even though she’s only five-five. “You know, I always did have tall thoughts,” giggles Vargas, who has remained true to her roots and to her craft for 20 years and counting. There’s a reason why her clients, both famous and not, are so dedicated to her, so this is where I shamelessly name-drop those she beautified for the 71st Met Gala: Rachel Brosnahan, Julienne Moore, Lili Reinhart, Natasha Lyonne, Tessa Thompson, Chloë Moretz, Hailee Steinfeld, Riley Keough, Mindy Kaling, Constance Wu, and Ruth Negga.

While I was lucky enough to be receiving one of her ultimate facials, like a star, we went down memory lane, because I wanted to know how it all began. It turns out, Vargas was on a “winding road,” eventually landing in New York and becoming a fashion photographer. But being as shy as she is, she quickly realized that the profession might not be right for her (although she still loves it, her spa filled with beautiful images and portraits).

Joanna Vargas NYC Salon

She decided to go to beauty school, thinking she might become a makeup artist and still be a part of the image-making process and artistry of it all—and that was the “ah-ha” moment. “Wait, people get paid to do this?” she recalls. “I just loved taking care of someone’s face, beautifying them while I had their faces in my hands.” It made sense to her because her grandmother, a total beauty lover, had a significant influence on the young Joanna. “When I was little, I always asked for beauty products. When it comes to presents—creams, bubble baths, perfumes, you name it—I asked for it.” Then 20 years later, voilà!

Joanna Vargas NYC Salon

Her new spa is stunning and expansive, housing 13 treatment rooms and 4 additional rooms with her patented LED RevitaLight Bed. The space boasts super high, 15-foot ceilings, an airy vibe with dreamy poured resin floors reflecting, and large arched windows. The feeling is plush, and everything is blanketed by her signature color: pale-blush-pink. When you walk in, there’s a neon sign by the waiting area that reads “#GlowBrighter,” which is the absolute goal. “Out of everyone in my family, my grandmother would have loved it here the most,” shares Vargas, who completely loves what she does, which includes creating her very own skin-care line— “one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but I love it, I love the science behind it, and I’m really a science girl.” Yes, Vargas is always researching and experimenting with how to use a specific combination of treatments that are tailor-made for individuals, for maximum effect. For me, she designed the following facial.

After exfoliation, a medical-grade collagen mask was applied. She uses different types of collagen, depending on what is happening on a particular skin, and my mask was infused with hyaluronic acid with a super-healing-and-hydrating epidermal growth factor that was perfect for rejuvenating the skin. A molding mask was then set atop, keeping the cover super-active, followed by micro-current, which increased lymphatic drainage, added stimulation, tightened of the muscles, and boosted collagen production by five to six percent. The result? A clear “wow” factor, as you can see on my Instagram at @sunheebeauty.

Joanna Vargas NYC Salon

“I have a client, one of the top female financial analysts in her field, and after her fourth or fifth facial, she says to me, ‘Joanna, I don’t feel invisible anymore,’” Vargas recalls. “And it’s moments like that that make me want to do a million more facials!” And I can assure you, you’ll be going back often, not only for her addicting facials but to lay on her LED RevitaLight Bed, which I mentioned earlier. She debuted this new, even more effective model last November when she opened her Fifth Avenue retreat (with the help of her beloved husband and CEO, Cesar Vargas, who is clearly the bedrock of her glorious enterprise).

Joanna Vargas NYC Salon

The patent on this genius bed may have taken years to get, but it’s no wonder, because of its incredible sophistication. Joanna cleverly engineered this LED in the form of a full-coverage bed designed to address different body zones, from cellulite on the butt to anti-aging on the face, and a $150 session will do the trick in just 20 minutes. (Full disclosure: you will find me on that bed once a week from now on!) And for the über-wealthy with second homes around the globe, this incredibly enticing bed—made in the U.S.A.—can be purchased, with white glove delivery, naturally. And the cost? Go for a visit and inquire, ‘cause a girl can dream. If not, don’t worry, he has the bed at her L.A. location as well, the coveted Sunset Tower spa retreat, so you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Joanna Vargas NYC Salon

What’s more, Joanna launched her Lymphatic Drainage Full Body Massage for awards-season this year, as well as the Body Booster add-on treatment, which employs air-compression boots to assist with lymphatic drainage and to de-puff from head to toe. Can you say, “Sign me up?” And there’s always her stellar skin-care line which she puts her whole heart into. Her latests from @JVSkincare are the energizing, green-tea Ritual Bar soap; the Ritual Brush, a natural-bristle dry tool; and the Glow to Go Mask Set, which includes sheet masks for the face and eye areas to address all skin concerns.

The maintenance measure for her movie-star clients is simple. “In between films, they come often and do a lot of treatments (including her signature facials like Supernova, Triple Crown, and Forever, as her spa offers 23 different treatments with 30 aestheticians in-house). Since they are gone for months on location, they have that boost to rely on and are holding together nicely,” Vargas explains. “Like everything in life, it’s about keeping up the regimen and maintaining, to bring out the best in you.” And when it comes to her work ethic? “Success won’t find you unless you make an authentic go of it.” Amen to that.
