Power Play

F I N E  A R T  Work by Heath Kane and Walter John Rodriguez

About “Power Play”

The inaugural exhibition of the new 4 Flavors Art Consultancy. Trailing the political turmoil of the 2020 United States presidential election, this collection focuses on the political and philosophical musings of two international artists, UK-based Australian artist Heath Kane, and Cuban-American Walter John Rodriguez.

4 Flavors

Each artist creates portraiture using iconic political figures, for Rodriguez, fathers of the American revolution in wild, expressionist brush strokes. For Kane, updated versions of Queen Elizabeth veiled as Batman or romantic-era portraits adorned by Blue Demon Lucha libre masks.

When viewed in concert with one another, Kane and Rodriguez create a cross-continental critique on the global rise of right-wing isolationist governments, wealth inequity, social narcissism. A host of other societal ills, all presented through the allure of a subtle, recognizable smile, dripped in bright colors and glitter.

Because Kane and Rodriguez address these underlying issues through characters associated with cultural ideals, rather than repeating the pervasive Trumpian or Boris Johnsonian caricature, their work goes beyond contemporary discourse and into the realm of the philosophical, re-examining the original intent of the political structures for which these figures are known.

A UK based artist, born in Australia, Heath has always been fascinated by the mix of creativity and art. Now turning his attention back to art, his collections of work draw inspiration from his commercial art background and origins of pop-art – a blend of design and art. His approach follows the practice of poster making and design, with a focus on creating simple, iconic, and memorable pieces. Within the artwork, he tries to distill subtle but often subversive themes.

Heath Kane

Work included in this exhibition pull from two series. His large-scale “Portrait of Heroes” paintings are inspired by master Romantic-era portraits that reveal how classical art was often a means for wealthy individuals to portray their ultra-ego. It playfully suggests that the classical portrait artist was the photoshop and Instagram filter of their time, leading the artist to question: “Today we all have the ability to take selfies and live our lives through social media. But how much of what we share is real and how much are we all trying to heroize our lives?”

The original hand-detailed screen prints from his “Rich Enough to Be Batman” collection “raise  questions about wealth and social justice, through the idea that with enough money anyone can be a  superhero.”

Walter John Rodriguez

Born in Havana in 1981, Walter John Rodriguez holds a studio in New York City. His love for drawing and painting developed at an early age in Cuba where he made every effort to learn artistic skills despite having limited resources. After immigrating to the U.S. his continued interest in art motivated him to seek formal art training graduating in 2002 with a B.F.A. degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Walter John Rodriguez

Rodriguez’s “Power Isn’t Love” series dives into the raw nerves of political discussion in the United States today, re-inventing well-known portraits of the American founding fathers through an updated, contemporary lens. Through these portraits, the artist incorporates accents of reassurance in the binding nature of our constitutional roots for a better society, while questioning faith in the inherent permanence these principles hold in today’s political climate.

In that sense, Rodriguez’s work is provoking a movement to understand all sides of the political spectrum. With close observance, viewers may feel empowered that a democracy like America’s has lasted over 200 years, but also encounter anxiety about the future.

The artist was most recently chosen for collaborations with “Inter Miami CF”; Miami’s professional soccer team owned by David Beckham and by the “Arsht Performing Arts Center” for “Hamilton” the play. He has participated in various art fairs across the United States such as “Art New York”, “Superfine” in L.A., and “Red  Dot” in Miami and also completed the Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation (ESKFF) residency program at  Mana Contemporary in Jersey City.

His work has been included in multiple private collections and group exhibits in Florida, California, New York, and New Jersey. He is co-founder and director of Rexer Gallery in  Hoboken, NJ.

Keeping up Tech Gadgets

All New Yorkers know how fast life is now. That is especially true in an area like Lower Manhattan with its buzzy atmosphere and vibrant community.

One part of your personal life that might seem just as exciting as technology with the latest gadgets that are consistently hitting the market. From the latest tablets which allow you to use a Resorts Casino bonus when playing slots online to smart TVs and next-gen consoles, there is a lot of tech info to keep up with. The situation is not only limited to adults in modern society though – your kids will be just as au fait with the latest gadgets.

It is a good idea to keep up with the newest tech the kids use. Not only will doing this give you the knowledge to keep your kids safe when they use it, but it will also mean you are familiar with it and know what it is your kids are using. But just how can any savvy Lower Manhattan resident do this?

Engage with your children about them

Perhaps the best way to keep up with whatever gadget your children have is to talk to them about it. Instead of letting them sit alone using it, take time to ask them about it, and find out what it does and how it works. Doing so will keep you in the loop, and it shows your children you are interested in what they are doing. Another great tip along the same lines is to have a go on the gadget with them yourself. It can be great fun, especially if it is something like the OnePlus 5 smartphone, a piece of wearable tech, or a video game console.

Talk to other parents

One excellent tip for any New Yorker trying to keep up with technology is talking to other parents. Whether a quick chat at the school gates when you drop them off, talking to other parents you know at work or those you know socially, can be worthwhile. That is very important when it comes to mobile apps or social media sites which your child might have asked to access. If you do not know much about the app or website they are asking about, it makes sense to check with other parents for more info first – before saying yes. You will then be in a much better place to make an informed decision and know what it is they are using.

Keep up with tech news

Of course, another way to know all about the most popular gadgets for kids is to keep an eye on tech news. Whether it is via online news websites, tech news apps, or print media, this is both easy and worthwhile. All the most popular gadgets will get a big publicity push during the launch, which means there will be lots of information about them. You do not have to get too technical here and start memorizing specs or processing speeds! Just knowing what the gadget does, what potential dangers it could pose, and whether you think it’s suitable is enough.

Make sure you are the one buying it

This might sound a bit of a no-brainer, but it is more common than ever now for kids to be buying their tech themselves, often without parents knowing! You might think that this is only an issue for older ones; however, purchasing through online stores can be something that even younger ones are now able to do. That is an unsatisfactory situation as you could fall behind in terms of what tech your kids have or what gadgets they are using.

It is essential for you to know what tech is being bought – whether older children use their own money to go shopping or younger ones buy stuff through your online account. Never let children have your account details so they can buy gadgets or upgrades themselves!

Tech moves fast – which means you have to as well

If you live downtown in New York, or indeed anywhere else around the city, it is vital to keep up with the technology your kids may be using. The problem for many parents in the Big Apple is that this is a sector that moves so fast! You barely get your head around the latest gadget before something else comes out, or a new version is released. If you need a way to stay abreast of technology and keep your kids safe, the above tips are great ways to go about it.

Event: Rocking Manhattan 2019

At 7:35 am on September 28th, teams of rowers will set out along the East River. No, this isn’t a mass exodus, nor is it an attempt to avoid morning traffic. It’s part of Rocking Manhattan, a 9-hour journey to circumnavigate Manhattan island in rowboats.

Rocking Manhattan is a 30-mile rowing event, providing participants with a rare perspective of New York City and a shared experience with a committed group of fellow New Yorkers (with a few Californians and Rhode Islanders mixed in). Formed into teams of between 4 and 12 people, they circle Manhattan Island along its three rivers—north up the East, west across the Harlem, and south down the Hudson.

Each team is charged with raising at least $25,000 to support Rocking the Boat’s programs for youth in the South Bronx. Most raise significantly more towards the goal of $400,000, or 13% of Rocking the Boat’s annual budget.

Event participants include rowers, coxswains, and powerboat drivers. Event beneficiaries are the roughly 4,000 members of the Hunts Point community who take part in Rocking the Boat’s youth development and public programs.

Groups of relatives, friends, and co-workers form the always creatively named teams rowing around Manhattan Island in Rocking Manhattan, including Flotsam and Jetsam, Dismasted, Knots Unlimited, Shore Thing, Going Full Circle, Rabble Rowsers, Either Oar, Sirens and Argonauts, Ebb and Flow, Rock Lobster. Some have been involved since the first circumnavigation in 2009, others are rowing for the very first time. Some started as members of other teams and have now taken the plunge to captain their own team. Rocking the Boat Board members are leading six of this year’s nine teams. Rocking the Boat’s Founder an Executive Director, Adam Green, always rows one or two of the three legs.

Graduates of Rocking the Boat’s after school youth development program serve as coxswains, steering the boats and keeping their rowers synchronized and motivated. They are members of Rocking the Boat’s Alumni Rowing Team, which trains all summer for the event.

A dear friend of Downtown’s Alies Van Den Berg, will be rowing two legs. We felt that this was something everyone can get out to support.

Members of the tight-knit sailing community in Barnegat Bay, NJ fill a vital role driving safety boats that accompany the rowing gigs throughout the day, providing support as needed from filling empty water bottles to giving weary rowers a short tow.

Rocking the Boat

Starting and ending at One°15 Brooklyn Marina in Brooklyn Bridge Park, the route includes a breakfast stop at Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City and a lunch stop at Muscota Marsh in Inwood and brings rowers under bridges, past landmarks, and adjacent to ferries, cruise ships, and coast guard vessels.

A celebration dinner and award presentation (for generating the most dollars, not rowing the fastest) takes place in Brooklyn once everyone returns to the dock.

Outside of a few smallish corporate sponsorships, this is a peer-to-peer fundraiser. Everyone involved has an individual fundraising page complete with progress thermometer. They post photos, write brief stories about their connection to the organization, and then proceed to hit up their networks for donations!

Rocking the Boat posts updates on social media and engages sponsors like Hydroflask for water bottles and Hornblower (the operator of NYC Ferry and Hornblower Cruises) for dry bags.

Rocking the Boat

Rocking the Boat brings tremendous positive impact to the high-need youth of Hunts Point by sustaining a hub of crucial resources and opportunities that help students overcome the circumstantial disadvantages that threaten to stifle their full potential. Activities centered on small boats and local waters are the unique vehicles Rocking the Boat uses to affect profound changes in the lives of young people and the vitality of their community. Wooden boatbuilding, sailing, and environmental research and restoration captivate and challenge young people, expose them to new experiences, and show them they are capable of doing things they never imagined, or only dreamed of. In doing so they develop the technical, social and emotional skills to replicate the successes they have in the shop and on the water in their personal, academic, and professional lives.

Rocking the Boat

The event is a circumnavigation of Manhattan Island over the course of nine hours. The boats, the rowers, the hydration and snacks, and the accumulated enthusiasm of over 100 volunteers are all in place…the only element we cannot plan for (other than the weather!) is a cheering section. Downtown has assembled the following list of locations and estimated times (+/- 10 minutes) for anyone who wants to have a one-of-a-kind New York experience coming out and cheering on the rowers.

Join Fado Festival in its New Home at Brookfield Place

Fado Festival NY&NJ enters its third year with a dazzling new venue partner, Brookfield Place New York, its most expansive lineup of artists and, with four free events, an incomparable opportunity for fans to hear some of the most revered singers on the Portuguese fado scene today. As in previous editions of the festival, the 2019 edition offers an unparalleled portrait of fado’s past, present and future. The festival will feature four of fado’s biggest names – Camané, Hélder Moutinho, Ana Sofia Varela, and Maria Emília – as well as the fado-inspired U.S.- based Portuguese jazz singer Sofia Ribeiro.

This year’s festival is the biggest and most extensive to date, running May 1 – 11. It features daytime and evening shows –all free and open to the public – from May 1 to 4 at Brookfield Place, a bold, state-of-the-art venue for cultural programming in New York City. The following weekend, Fado Festival NY&NJ travels to the historical center of fado in the United States, Newark, New Jersey, on May 11 for a walking tour of the Ironbound district and an intimate fado concert at Sport Club Português.

Fado is enjoying a global resurgence, buoyed not only by worldwide tours of artists who perform it, but also by the experiences of visitors to Portugal who have heard the music in the small taverns and community collectives where it was born and still thrives. Fado captures the spirit and inventiveness of Portugal — as well as some of its boldest contradictions. The music can be wildly improvisational even while adhering to its strictest traditions; its lyrics span the sacred to the secular; and its practitioners are a fluid mix of individuals representing nearly every corner of Portuguese society.

The festival opens with two free lunchtime concerts at Brookfield Place by Portuguese singer Sofia Ribeiro on May 1 and 2, both at 12:00pm. An award-winning performer, Ribeiro’s latest recording, Mar Sonoro, embraces fado, jazz and contemporary Brazilian music. Ribeiro has performed extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, and has released a total of eight studio albums.

The festival’s free evening concerts begin at the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place with a double bill featuring Camané and Ana Sofia Varela on May 3 at 7:30pm

Camané, Photo by Arlindo Camacho

Camané’s highly influential body of work, captured in nine studio albums (six certified gold) and countless live performances over more than 30 years, has established him as the deacon of 21st century fado. His two most recent records are both monuments to the form, as well as being his furthest-ranging and most penetrating to date. Infinito Presente, the product of an extended collaboration with the writer José Maria Branco, operates on a knife-edge: while the lyrics and arrangements are deceptively simple, even sparse, they express the enigmatic, ineffable emotion that the Portuguese claim as uniquely and exclusively theirs: saudade, which is at once the happiness that brings sadness, and the sadness that brings happiness. On Camané’s most recent record, Canta Marceneiro, he revisits the repertory of Alfredo Marceneiro, an early 20th century fado singer who, though only moderately competent as a technician, completely recast fado’s possibilities for artistic expression through unbridled inventiveness, guile and wit. Camané’s Canta Marceneiro is filled with picaresque stories that reveal the common cares and fears in all of us through the lives of wizened waitresses, drunken painters, and kings’ courtiers.

Ana Sofia Varela rose to prominence in the early 2000s as one of a small group of young and dynamic new fadistas, initiating a period of vibrancy and innovation that continues to the present. Her two album-length releases–a self-titled 2002 debut and 2009’s Fados de Amor e de Pecado–are tender and heartfelt recordings that recall the lonely landscapes and Moorish influences of Portugal’s Alentejo region through the lives of various women. Varela has performed extensively throughout Portugal and Europe. She is currently at work on new record, scheduled for release in 2020.

The second evening double bill at Brookfield Place features Hélder Moutinho and Maria Emília on May 4 at 7:30pm, as well as a pre-concert talk at 6:00pm with fado historian and scholar Dr.Lila Ellen Gray.

Hélder Moutinho is first and foremost a fado singer of startling depth and invention. With his brother, Camané, he shares a long family lineage devoted to fado. Hélder Moutinho’s albums are multi-faceted creations, each built around a unifying concept: they evoke contemporary experiences of love and loss, framed by the ancient alleyways and shadows of Old Lisbon. A songwriter and a poet, Moutinho is also one of a very select group of singers who manage their own fado venue, or “Casa de Fados” (fado house). In this case, the “casa” is “Maria da Mouraria,” where fado’s first great singer, Maria Severa, lived more than 150 years ago. It’s a pulsating, mythical place at the center of a bustling community of fado singers, musicians, lyricists and composers. For this concert, Moutinho promises “a voyage through the streets and history of Lisbon via the words and sounds of fado.”

Maria Emília, Photo by Abilio Leitao

Performing the same evening is Maria Emília, a beautiful, burning light of contemporary fado. She moved from Brazil to Portugal at a young age, and began singing fado early: now 28, she has been performing for 15 years. Throughout this time, she has demonstrated a steadfast devotion not only to the music’s deepest traditions but also to its expressive possibilities. Onstage, the effect is mesmerizing: perhaps no other singer of her generation combines raw magnetism, complete freedom, and total commitment to traditional fado to such devastating effect. Her new CD, Casa de Fado, sparkles with bittersweet fados such as “Perfeito Pecado” and “Sou um Fado desta Idade”, while laying bare the raw emotion of classics such as “Um dia cheguei-me a ti” and “Agora.”

All singers on both nights will be backed up by a trio of dynamic musicians: André Dias (Portuguese guitar), André Ramos (classical guitar) and Rodrigo Serrão (acoustic bass guitar).

The festival concludes on May 11 with a walking tour and live fado performance in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey, home to a thriving fado community of its own. The Ironbound—so named for the bustling railroad system that encircles it—is an iconic Portuguese neighborhood known for its European feel and for the hundreds of restaurants, cafes, bars and stores within it. The tour will visit local establishments furnishing Portuguese wine, food and pastries, as well as important cultural attractions. The tour’s final stop will be the Sport Club Português, a leading cultural institution located in the heart of the Ironbound, for refreshments at 6:00pm and an intimate fado concert at 7:00pm. The tour departs Sport Club Português (55 Prospect Street, a 5-minute walk from Penn Station Newark) at 4:30pm

Day Trip From New York: Hard Rock Hotel Atlantic City – The Boardwalk’s Newest Resort

If there’s on thing Atlantic City doesn’t need it’s another cookie cutter casino.

Over the past 6 years, 5 major properties shut down on Jersey’s acclaimed gambling boardwalk. And there are still 7 competing casinos. So why on earth, would anyone want to open another one?

Believe it or not, the answer is simple – while it’s obvious that Atlantic City doesn’t lack slot machines or poker tables, it’s missing next level of entertainment. Hard Rock wants to change that.

The new Hard Rock Hotel Atlantic City property has over 2,100 slot machines and 120 table games, but it betting on more than just more gambling opportunities.

The new 17-acre boarward resort, which opened last month, boasts 20 restaurants (including flashy dessert spot Sugar Factory and Greenich Village’s italian favorite Il Mulino). There’s a gym and a spa – which are standard hotel fare–but on top of that, the hotel itself is a mecca of a museum for any music lover.

It’s home to seven stages (one of which is a 7,000 person arena, another a theater that fits 2,000) bringing an unprecedented amount of entertainment to the neighborhood. Acts big and small fill each stage so that there’s never a silent night. Upcoming ones range the gamut in music taste – there’s everything from Rascal Flatts, to Pat Benatar, and even Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

As if that wasn’t enough, tucked in every corner is a piece of rock and roll history from  Hard Rock’s impressive memorabilia collection. Any Beatles fan will want to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the property to find John Lennon’s glasses, plus his hand written lyrics to Imagine. You can also see pieces from icons like Jimi Hendrix, Prince, and David Bowie. But our favorite installation has to be the room dedicated to Jersey’s best talent, which includes pieces from Bon Jovi, Sinatra, Frankie Valli, Whitney Houston, the E Street Band, and Lauryn Hill

If you chose to stay at the property you can rock out even harder. Guests who are longing for a bit of nostalgia can request to have a Crosley turntable in their room. They’ll be able to  pan through a curated selection of records to enjoy on vinyl. Rather make your own music? Turns out that’s an option too. Similar to checking out a library card, only undoubtedly cooler, guests can ‘check out’ one of 20 Fender Guitars during their stay. There’s the option to borrow legendary Stratocasters, telecasters, and bass guitars. Each one is delivered to a guest’s room with a Fender floor amp and Nixon headphones – so they can have a personal jam session.

The stakes are high for any property that’s trying to earn it’s spot on the Atlantic Boardwalk. But it seems Hard Rock is playing its best cards and is destined to become a number one hit. For more information on the resort, restaurants, and music performances click here
