Celebrating Diversity of Cultural Traditions NYC

Celebrating Diversity of Cultural Traditions NYC
Center for Traditional Music and Dance (CTMD)

Song. Dance. Culture. Celebrating the diversity of cultural traditions in New York City, the Center for Traditional Music and Dance (CTMD) is launching an online series, Beat of the Boroughs: NYC Online on Monday, November 16.

The series highlights the artistry of 54 of the City’s leading immigrant performers from around the world – but from right here at home in our five boroughs.

The artists include several National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Award winners. They represent traditions hail from Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Gambia, Haiti, Iraq, Japan, Mongolia, Ukraine, and West Africa, among other areas.

“New York City’s traditional and folk artists have been particularly impacted by both the pandemic and the anti-immigrant political climate in our country. Amid the pandemic, many of these artists have structural impediments, including the digital divide and language barriers to access federal relief funds or private sources of funding,” CTMD Executive Director Peter Rushefsky said.

“It is imperative that we come together as a city to support and celebrate our immigrant communities. Beat of the Boroughs: NYC Online showcases the immense talents of our artists and further the public’s understanding and appreciation of their work during these trying times.”

CTMD has worked closely with dozens of diverse communities

Since its founding in 1968, CTMD has worked closely with dozens of diverse communities to create a number of ongoing art programs, festivals, and community-based cultural organizations. Each year, CTMD serves thousands of New Yorkers through programs that provide unique opportunities to experience and participate in the City’s rich cultural traditions.

Organizers hope the series will build more support for the artists and for CTMD, particularly as the nonprofit continues to highlight the artistic diversity within New York City. CTMD encourages donations at https://ctmd.org/donate/.

From Borough to Borough

The schedule kicks off with:

  • The Crimean Tatar Ensemble, of Brooklyn, with folk music and dance from the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine (Monday, November 16).
  • The Mencius Society with Xiao Xiannian and Julie Tay of Manhattan, with yangqin (hammered dulcimer) and Chinese percussion (Wednesday, November 18).
  • Sidiki Conde of Manhattan, with West African drumming and his sacred ancestral masks (Friday, November 20).
  • Malang Jobarteh and Salieu Suso of the Bronx, presenting on West African jali/griot traditions (Friday, November 27).

CTMD will highlight three artists or ensembles each week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Audiences can tune in on those days at 5:00 PM to CTMD’s YouTube channel, or Facebook page.

“Through workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and streamed live performances, a stellar cast of musicians and dancers presents their personal stories, remarkable traditions, and pandemic experiences,” Project Director and Staff Ethnomusicologist Andrew Colwell said. “Their voices serve as a powerful platform for continued advocacy for traditional arts in our city of immigrants.”

Beat of the Boroughs: NYC Online is made possible through the generosity of the New York Community Trust’s NYC COVID-19 Response & Impact Fund and the Scherman Foundation.

Yoli Mayor the Cuban Sound Machine

With a powerful voice, Yoli Mayor wants her music to be real and mean something to others.

Besides her singing, Yoli Mayor, a Cuban American has also written and performed in plays and dabbled in jewelry and clothing design.
With a powerful voice, YOLI MAYOR wants her music to be real, and mean something to others. Singer Yoli Mayor began singing when she was two. But she didn’t croon “My LittleTeapot” or “Old MacDonald.”

The first song she remembers singing is one of Aerosmith’s biggest hits.“It honestly just happened,” she says. “The first things I remember singing are “I Don’t wanna miss a Thing” by Aerosmith and the song from The Little Mermaid, “Part of Your World.”Perhaps she was destined, from the time she was two and singing Aerosmith, to lift up her voice with power and grace. Which she did, during the first episode of season 12 of America’s Got Talent.
However, infamous judge Simon Cowell was not so impressed when she first opened her mouth to sing “I Put a Spell on You” by Annie Lennox. He told her the performance didn’t feel young enough and asked if she could sing something else. After harried host Tyra Banks ran out on stage to assist in removing Yoli’s diamond jewelry and kicking off her shoes, Yoli chose“Make It Rain” by Ed Sheeran. And she blew the roof off the place.
Yoli didn’t magically arrive at this point in her life. Her family, especially her parents, uplifted and encouraged her along the way.“My mom has always been the number-one fan, my parents, together,” she says. “From the beginning, my mom always encouraged me to keep singing, and my dad was the voice of reason but he still always supported me. He’s a harsh critic, but that’s because he wanted me to grow.

”Her musical inspiration comes from several different artists, including Frank Sinatra and Amy Winehouse.“I love Amy Winehouse because she was raw from start to finish,”

Yoli says. “Her music was real and unapologetic, and that’s what is attractive to me as a songwriter.”Yoli wants to reach people with her music.“I want people to hear my music and think, ‘How does she know? How did she know that’ show I felt?

Western Wind begins its 51st year in 2020. Since 1969, this Grammy nominated vocal sextet has devoted itself to the special beauty and variety of a cappella music. The New York Times has called them “A kaleidoscopic tapestry of vocal hues.” The ensemble’s repertoire reveals its diverse background, from Renaissance motets to Fifties rock’n’roll, medieval carols to Duke Ellington, complex works by avant-garde composers to the simplest folk melodies. Premiere: “Motorcycle” By Lucky Witch and the Righteous Ghost

“Motorcycle, there’s no god tonight. Only streetlights.”

Staten Island’s Lucky Witch and the Righteous Ghost is an eclectic group of erstwhile poltergeists.

LWRG formed in 2016 when vocalist/guitarist E. Niveous Rayside sought electronic sounds for the grunge-inspired music he was making. He started a musical partnership with his girlfriend (now wife), R. Brookes McKenzie, later rounding out the sound with bassist Eric Novak and drummer Jay Ackley. The quartet earned a cult following at the late SideWalk Café in the East Village.

“LWRG is driven by a strong muse to create,” says Niveous. Since 2016, the band has released a studio album called Spiderdust, as well as a live album chronicling their times in the East Village open mic scene called Night Owls. In 2019, they released an EP called All Hard Feelings, and they started off the year releasing their second studio album New Ways To Make Mistakes. Now the band is already crafting songs for album #3.

Motorcycle is the first single release from their second studio album, New Ways To Make Mistakes.

Self-described as “a concentrated ball of pure awesome,” LWRG is a rock n’ roll lineup with heavy grunge and garage influences, sprinkled with the ethereal chimes of a Suzuki Omnichord. “We have heard our sound referred to as “sunshine goth” and “What if the Cramps were Jefferson Airplane?” says Niveous. “We like to call it sparklegrunge. I write music for the sad kids.”

Motorcycle, inspired by the music of Curve, was written in the back of an Uber on the way to the studio to record LWRG’s first album. The dreary day inspired the song’s tale of a doomed motorcyclist. The video game Black Emperor by Jose Tomas Vicuna also served as inspiration.

The band worked with Alice Teeple to direct a live performance video with superimposed stock footage. Motorcycle was filmed on location in the cellar of a Gothic revival mansion in Hamilton Park, Staten Island. The eerie stone walls and psychedelic lights, straight out of the Addams Family, complement the dark lyrics of Motorcycle.

Downtown is pleased to present the premiere of Motorcycle.
