Chef Mashama Bailey brings her Southern food to NYC at Intersect

Acclaimed Savannah, Georgia Chef Mashama Bailey is bringing the best of her Southern cuisine from award-winning restaurant The Grey to the Big Apple in a multi-week residency at Intersect by Lexus. In its first-ever takeout and delivery program, the venue is featuring a rotating three-course menu that changes on a weekly basis — to keep things interesting.

Located in New York City’s Meatpacking District, Intersect by Lexus has featured some excellent chefs in their Restaurant-in-Residence rotation, and this month’s is no exception. Chef Mashama Bailey residency started on Thursday, January 21, and is running through mid-April, so you will have plenty of time to enjoy her port city classic dishes mixed with the NYC flavors.

The menu, which includes appetizer, entrée and dessert courses, along with sides of The Grey’s signature collard greens, pickles and homemade bread, is available Thursday through Sunday evenings. To complement the experience, guests can choose between a selection of handcrafted cocktails such as Chatham Artillery Punch and the Father John Manhattan available to order à la carte, and a wine pairing package.

Orders will also include some branded gifts inspired by The Grey and Intersect by Lexus, such as a copy of Chef Bailey and her business partner Johno Morisano’s new book, Black, White & The Grey, an at-home pickling kit and a free month of Netflix to stream Chef Bailey’s episode of Chef’s Table.

About Chef Mashama Bailey

Mashama is a New York City girl – born in the Bronx and raised in Queens. Thanks to the women in her family — grandmothers, aunts and her mom — she learned to cook and became passionate about the power of food to tell stories. Chef Bailey attended the Institute of Culinary Education and also did a six-month stage at Château du Feÿ in Burgundy, France to improve her cooking techniques.

After working 12 years in New York restaurants, Mashama was invited by John Morisano to become the partner and executive chef at his new Southern restaurant in Georgia, The Grey, set in a former Greyhound bus terminal in downtown Savannah. With a penchant for regional produce, seafood and meats, Chef Bailey is always bringing new ideas to the restaurant.

The Grey was a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s Best New Restaurant award, with Chef Bailey winning Best Chef Southeast award in 2019. Not to be missed, she was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table in 2019 and became the first African American chef to star on the acclaimed show.

Intersect’s Next Global Chef Sergio Barroso is Bringing Santiago, Chile to New York City

As much as we loved Frenchie at Intersect by Lexus in the Meatpacking District, we are equally excited to try the next global chef-in-residence’s creations! Starting in April, Chef Sergio Barroso of Restaurante 040 in Santiago, Chile will bring his world renowned cooking to NYC.

040 at Intersect by Lexus will offer a 12-course small plate tasting menu that consists of cutting edge bite-size dishes set to change on a regular basis, for $95 per person. Working from a reserve of 30 small plates, Chef Barroso’s menu will change day-to-day, all utilizing avant-garde techniques to provide an ever-changing dynamic to the restaurant at INTERSECT. Each course is served in non-traditional fashion – on beds of hay, wood panels, or even the spiny shell of a sea urchin. These upscale tapas will be served without silverware, distinguishing 040 from the typical fine dining experience. Lunch will be slightly more condensed with a 6-course tasting menu for $40 per person. Dishes that will be served include Hake Churros with Béchamel Foam, Shank Dumpling and Smoked Broth, and Oyster with Green Apple and Hot Pepper Sorbet.

“Restaurante 040’s inventive approach is not only unique to New York; but also, to the rest of the world,” explains Chef Barroso. “As it is the first fine dining restaurant to offer food that must be eaten with your hands, the concept will contribute a completely new gastronomic experience to the public. The concept resembles Japanese Kaiseki, complementing the overall ethos of Intersect by Lexus.”

Born in Madrid to a family of chefs, Sergio Barroso has worked at El Bulli, the legendary Michelin three-star restaurant known for its extraordinary Catalonian food, Denis Martin in Vevey, Switzerland, and the five-star Monte Carlo Beach in Monaco – all of which have shaped his esteemed cooking style.

Intersect’s Cocktail Bar and Lounge will also transition into Room 09 – 040’s speakeasy – where mixologist and partner, Raul Esteban Yañez Campos, creates original and daring cocktails. Following in 040’s unconventional style, Room 09 at Intersect by Lexus will serve cocktails in elaborate and whimsical glassware for a completely elevated and unparalleled dining experience.

We can’t wait to sample what the chefs from Santiago have to offer! If you get your hands on a cocktail served in a swan shaped glass before us be sure to tag @downtownmagnyc in your photos!

Head to Intersect by Lexus for a One Time Only Experience

Yes, Lexus actually runs a restaurant…well, with some help from Union Square Hospitality Group. Intersect by Lexus is comprised of a first floor cafe, second floor fine restaurant and lounge, and third floor exhibition space. Both the chef designing the menu for the restaurant and the contents of the exhibition space will be rotating pretty frequently, so head to the space in the Meatpacking District soon to experience this iteration!

The current art exhibit is called Essential Invisible by Future Wife. The interactive exhibit aims to capture the auras of the guests by using heat sensing cameras and lane departure technology. That might sound super techie, but it’s an insanely fun and visually stimulating experience worth the visit alone.

After you’ve worked up an appetite running around the exhibition, head downstairs to the main dining room, which currently features Global Chef-In-Residence Gregory Marchand of the restaurant Frenchie in Paris and London and recent recipient of a Michelin Star at the Paris location. He brings his style of infusing classic dishes with subtle international flair to the Big Apple for a limited time only.

Dishes include Halibut a la Grenobloise, Terrine, and Lamb Ragu along with a show stopping Yuzu Mont Blanc for dessert. If you’re intimidated by dinner, head over for the excellent two course lunch for $35 including tip. Lunch features a sparse but impeccably done lobster roll with brioche so rich it’s almost custard and fried chicken with jalapeño aioli and a bacon scone (which you can also purchase to go downstairs at the cafe).

There are subtle reminders of the luxury brand throughout the space, from the wall of toy cars outside the bathroom to the spoke theme running through the two floors. Make sure you head over before the restaurant and art space switch over in March!
