Highlights From The Launch Party Of Downtown Magazine’s Art Issue

On Monday, Nov. 6, Downtown Magazine hosted its cover launch party for the special art issue. Held at the beautiful World Trade Gallery, which also hosts some of the artists covered in the latest issue, the setting for the magnificent night couldn’t have been a better fit.

On the night of the launch, Downtown Magazine could finally unveil the cover and present the cover stars, who were all present to show their support; Kirk Myers of the DogPound, Olympian fencer Miles Chamley-Watson, award-winning actress and singer Cynthia Erivo, ABT ballerina Katie Boren, and model Anne De Paula were all joined by photographer Nigel Barker, who shot this issue’s cover.

“Life itself can be a form of art,” said Nigel Barker as Downtown’s Publisher & CEO Grace A. Capobianco handed him the microphone to introduce the thoughts behind the feature. And life indeed can. In this issue, Downtown focused on the many ways art is created, because art does come in many shapes and forms. And for all the cover stars, their bodies are what allow them to create, compete and perform at peak.

The launch party held a very special surprise in the form of an auction #DenimForArt, in which Downtown Magazine had paired with Saks Downtown to benefit the organization Girl Be Heard. The cover stars along with three of the incredibly talented artists also covered in the issue, WhIsBe, Chinon Maria and Layer Cake, had each designed jean jackets for the auction. See all the stunning designs and place your bid right here.

The jackets were presented in the most amazing fashion in a Girl Be Heard performance with spoken word and a rap that had the gallery buzzing with empowerment.

The gallery was packed with the who’s who of Downtown Manhattan and over the course of the night, guests marveled at the artwork while enjoying delicious hors d’ouvres from Madison & Park Hospitality Group and wine provided by Barrymore Wines and Liquor Lab.

Another star beverage of the night was served by iPic‘s own Adam Seger, whose feature in this issue holds a special DOWNTOWNER cocktail recipe that he’s created solely for Downtown Magazine. The cocktail consists of tequila infused with grilled pineapple, Fresno chilies and FiDi honey, and was a sure hit at the party.
This cocktail will now be available at the Tuck Room in the Fulton Market Building in the Seaport District, or grab an issue of the magazine and duplicate it at home.

We couldn’t be more excited to present this new issue of Downtown Magazine as we step into what we truly believe to be a new era for the magazine and for the Downtown area as a whole.

“No longer our grandfather’s or our father’s Wall Street, or the lost city after 9/11, Downtown Manhattan has come alive with artists, athletes, models, dancers, and entrepreneurs. It’s hot!” said our Chairman of the Advisory Board, Dara McQuillan Chief Marketing Officer Silverstein Properties And we couldn’t agree more.

Sweet Corner Bakeshop Pride Specials

Sweet Corner Bakeshop is located in the West Village, serving home made baked goods all day. They are known for their warm cookies: the famous red velvet cookie filled with gooey nutella, the crunchy chocolate chip cookies with lots of salt or even a cookie filled with cheesecake. There’s simply no need to choose between your favorite desserts if you can have it all in one cookie!
Sweet Corner Bakeshop has recently stepped up their game in honor of pride month, turning their delicious sweets rainbow-colored. And we all know, everything that looks aesthetically pleasing is way more fun to eat, not to mention delicious.

If rainbow colored cheesecakes, cupcakes or layer cakes don’t make you feel like a happy unicorn, we’re not sure what will. Let’s start with the rainbow colored cheesecake — we are in New York City aka the city of cheesecakes after all. It’s topped with a light cream and sprinkled with confetti, while keeping its traditional cookie crust. It’s a must try.
The layer cake is surprisingly light and fluffy for a seven(!) layer cake with buttercream, and the thousands of sprinkles and confetti add crunch to each bite. We’re just hoping those thousand sprinkles doesn’t equal a thousand calories. But then again, when it tastes like this, we don’t really care about the calories…
Want something similar but smaller? The unicorn cupcake has your name written all over it.

If you haven’t got a sweet tooth however and these sweets don’t get you salivating in the slightest, Sweet Corner Bakeshop also serves up plenty of savory sandwiches, bagels and paninis. The cherry on top the rainbow-colored cake? They recently started serving brunch, and the outdoor seating is great for people watching.

Street Art Gallery Graces 69th Floor of 4 World Trade Ahead of Spotify Move-In

Bradley Theodore, Coming To America

A project nearly a year in the making, 4 World Trade’s street-art inspired gallery on the building’s 69th floor is finally finished. The exhibit will feature the work of over 50 artists from New York, and around the world, in a variety of mediums.

Stickymonger, Cosmic Tower

ART4WTC is a dramatic and shift in style for the Silverstein Properties artist residency program, which they have used to decorate their unleased spaces for around the past 15 years. The idea for the art project was born when Silverstein Properties Chief Marketing Officer, Dara McQuillan, viewed a display of similar work at World Trade Gallery, and offered curator Doug Smith the opportunity to turn the 69th floor into a giant canvas.

Layer Cake + Belowkey, Joe LaPadula, Jenna Krypel, Beautiful Cleanup

Smith jumped at the chance, and since June 2016, the space’s barren cement interior has been transformed into a kaleidoscope of color propelled by each artist’s enthusiasm for their craft. The project not only seeks to revitalize the Lower Manhattan art scene and elevate street art from its humble beginnings, but also celebrate the Financial District’s progress since 9/11.

WhIsBe, Vandal Gummy Blue & Red

Some of the artists featured in the gallery include Bradley Theodore, Layer Cake, Rubin451, Logan Hicks, Stickymonger, Sonni, Cern, Hugo Bastidas, Lauren Ys, L.E.G., Itaewon and Ron English, and WhIsBe. His piece, Vandal Gummy Blue & Red, is a playful nod at street art’s past life as acts of vandalism, while Ron English’s piece, No Brain No Pain, is a powerful punch of reality and color.

Fans of Hamilton can even find quotes from the hit musical in the very fabric of David Hollier’s $10 Bill, which faces the direction of the Trinity Church cemetery where the Founding Father himself is buried. Fortunately, Spotify — who will eventually occupy the space — plans to keep as many of the pieces as they can. Downtown recommends art fans of all ages check out the 3D tour available online to see the work of those keeping New York creative and colorful.
