Visiting Jamaica – What You Need to Know

Choosing the perfect holiday destination for you and your friends, family or partner is a challenging task. Everyone’s dream destination is different, and their preferences are based on varying criteria. Furthermore, while some places are more suited for young couples, other are family-friendly instead. Fortunately, you have plenty of resources to help you choose.

This A Jamaican Experience article goes as far as to debate the ultimate destination battle being that between Jamaica and Mexico. The two have the same peak seasons, namely mid-December to mid-April, and tourists choose them for similar reasons. But if you’ve been considering going Jamaica this year, here’s what you need to know beforehand.

Beaches

It’s no secret that many people visit Jamaica for its stunning beaches paved with fine, white sand and breathtaking scenery. Furthermore, the entire island benefits from clear, turquoise-colored waters all along its coasts facing the beautiful Caribbean Sea. Therefore, regardless of what part you choose to visit, it will most likely have a great beach nearby.

The best destination to meet this purpose is Negril, a small resort town located in the western part of Jamaica, in the Hanover and Westmoreland parishes of the country. The Montego Bay Airport is nearby, making it as accessible as it is lovely. And if you’re looking for the best of the best, put Seven Mile Beach on your radar.

If you’re heading east, make sure to check out Boston Bay Beach. This location is an excellent choice if you want to sunbathe or catch some waves, but also if you’re after the best jerk food that money can buy on Jamaican land. Its authenticity is something that’s hard to replicate, which is why you should visit this area if you have the chance.

Culture

As Westerners, there is nothing more prominent that we associate with Jamaican than the Rastafarian religious belief system. Based on the coronation of King Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia in 1930, this movement became a pivotal element of Afro-Caribbean philosophy and gave birth to important customs and traditions. Still, the vast majority of Jamaica is Christian.

If you’re interested in witnessing a slice of culture unfolding before your very eyes, Kingston is the place to be. The Bob Marley Museum is a great choice for any reggae lover or pop culture enthusiast out there because it showcases essential aspects of the beloved artist’s life and times.

In addition, it’s located in the house where he lived and recorded from 1975 until his death in 1981, which adds a certain mystique to the entire experience. The prevalent themes in his work have to do with the Rastafari way of life, out of which reggae music was born. Nevertheless, Jamaica is much more than that.

It’s a colorful and vibrant country full of interesting things to try or just observe. No matter which part of it you choose to visit, you will surely have something to learn from the experience.

Cuisine

A big part of the tourist experience is indulging in a country’s traditional cuisine. And when it comes to Jamaica, you’re in for a number of deliciously spicy treats. Jerk chicken is one of the countries largest exports, but this recipe is also applied to meats such as pork or even goat. Rum is also a big part of the food and drinks culture of the country.

From a traditional point of view, papaya, maize, potatoes, and peanuts have been the central elements to many Jamaican dishes through the years. Then, the Spanish colonization of the territory brought along local influences, and Creole, African and Caribbean touches also made their presence felt through time.

Conclusion

Before you visit Jamaica, it’s important to decide where you want to go, and what you want to see. This will help you decide where to go. But regardless of the region, make sure to try the delicious cuisine and drinks that the local restaurants and bars offer. This is what turns a good experience into an amazing one.

6 Amazing Places To Travel To For The Best Photo Ops

Alicante

Here are some of Amra and Elma’s favorite places to travel for photo ops:

1. Venice, Italy

One of our favorite place to visit is definitely Venice because of its unforgettable romantic ambience. The charming canals, the grandoise villas, and the out of this world gelato…This lovely city is built on water and usually in the summer there are huge crowds of people from all over the world, but even when it’s busy, you can dodge the crowds –- go just a few streets from the Rialto and San Marco. You are always just an alley away from a secret square like the stunning Gothic palazzi and lively neighborhood wine bars. Venice is very unique, largely due to its canals and history, so you will enjoy breathtaking views and eye catching villas, where you can capture some of the best scenery with your camera.

Venice also has some of the best restaurants and Venetian food is full of seafood specialities. My favorite is the black ink pasta, you must try if you haven’t already! If you want to have an exquisite city view, go across to the island of San Giorgio, there’s a fantastic view and there’s hardly anyone there!

2. Jamaica

Jamaica has long been the jewel of the Caribbean for its white sand beaches and its crystal clear emerald waters. With that said, if you visit Jamaica, there is far more to discover than its beaches and all-inclusive resorts. To getaway from your resort, I suggest going inland and seeing the waterfalls and protected caves. While enjoying the sunshine, you can play in the surfing waters, ride horses or even swim with the dolphins. In that case, go to the Dolphin Cove, it’s a marine attraction at which guests can swim and interact with dolphins and even sharks in their natural environment!

Generally, the local food is spicy but always fresh and very tasty. Jamaica is one of the liveliest places to be, as it has amazing culture, history and some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen! You can take some of the best photos on the blue lagoons or beautiful streets of Jamaica. Oh, and did we mention that its inhabitants are very friendly?

Cinque Terre

3. Cinque Terre, Italy

This was by far one of my favorite places I have ever visited. This lovely Italian Riviera is on the UNESCO’s World Heritage sites with its breathtaking Ligurian coastline. It consists of five seaside villages and and the towering cliffs behind them. It feels like a dream with its colorful houses atop of the cliffs overlooking the majestic Adriatic Sea! You will see churches in the colorful villages, with an amazing history and some unbelievably-stunning places to take photos. The rocky coastal cliffs are breathtaking, you can take a train, a boat or a car, the national park stands on its own away from Milan.

We enjoyed dining on a few terraces overlooking the sea. You can enjoy the seaside from the towering cliffs or just go for a great meal and a glass of wine in a tucked away restaurant. We tried some of the local specialties and the fresh seafood was out of this world! This is a place with special charm, breath-taking views, and it must be on your travel bucket list.

4. Monaco, French Riviera

In the heart of Mediterranean, bounded by the French Riviera to the west and the Italian Riviera to the east, Monaco is truly full of the “old Hollywood glam and glitz,” on top of being a perfect summer escape. Just walking through the streets of old town of Monte Carlo reminded me of the Old Hollywood glamour of Princess Grace Kelly and visiting the Palace and being at Port Hercules of the vintage James Bond movies. We loved every second of it!

Monte Carlo has some of the most elegant boulevards. There is much shopping to be done on Avenue de la Costa with its luxury boutiques. The Palace is uniquely-positioned, high above the sea with a panoramic view. When in Monaco, you can enjoy museums, exotic gardens, or you can visit the Opera House. The blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the fancy restaurants and Monaco’s harbors make it such a picturesque place.

5. Alicante, Spain

Located on the Mediterranean Sea, with a rich history and such friendly people, Alicante was a perfect destination for us. It is a quaint city with lots of European tourists in the summer. Alicante is an amazing summer destination, it has both sandy and rocky beaches, depending on what you prefer. You can take some of the best beach photos here with its rocky caves and emerald green waters. The various districts maintain their own characteristic flare while simultaneously and effortlessly complementing each other.

Here, there are restaurants for all tastes and budgets. This city has that magic charm and it is definitely worth a visit! Also, if in Alicante, you must visit the charming island of Tabarca — it’s just one hour away by boat and it’s absolutely stunning! Not many tourists visit this island, but it’s definitely worth the journey. We spent a day there, enjoying its local seaside restaurants and also swimming in its calm waters.

Ibiza

6. Ibiza, Spain

Known for its rambunctious nightlife, the island of Ibiza has amazing beaches and some of the most picturesque sunsets. If you want to avoid the young and lovely summer crowd, there are beaches tucked away with white sand and turquoise water. Ibiza has so much to offer for photographers with its lovely sandy bays and photogenic rocky terrains.

Visiting the old town was amazing, going and through labyrinth-like streets, it felt like we were in a different century! Also, their gastronomy is amazing, as there is variety of delicious beach restaurants — and you need to try some of their cocktails. Ibiza is definitely more than a party island, full of old world charm, and its secluded beaches make it a perfect getaway spot!

DOWNTOWN caught up with Nubia Duvall Wilson, who has been to Mustique numerous times, for the inside scoop about SVG. Wilson is a luxury travel expert with a distinguished travel background. She has represented Bacardi in Travel Retail and luxury hotels and destinations around the world since 2008. Since 2003, Wilson has traveled to more than 40 destinations globally and lived in Taiwan for two years.

“It is an area of the Caribbean that isn’t your typical go to destination. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is where you feel isolated,” Wilson said. “The islands aren’t over developed, they are very lush, small and each island is different, so you have many options, which is nice. You get a more peaceful experience.”

The new and improved airport will offer nonstop international jet service from North American and European gateways, increasing flights into SVG. Aside from the airport increasing access to these paradisal islands, the infrastructure and eco-friendly activities have been immensely re-constructed.
