Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ Inviting New Fall Collection Embodies the Season’s Appeal

The gradual onset of the cooler weather tends to tease the much-anticipated comforts many of us look forward to all year long. From intimate fireside conversations to curling up with a glass of wine or a good book under a lush throw, the enjoyment of the season is only enhanced by the gorgeous colors of the fall foliage from the vantage point of the home.

So when Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams announced their soon-to-come Fall Collection—the New Modern—we waited with delight. It did not disappoint.

Designed with intention, each beautifully crafted furnishing is meant to elevate the way we live—today. It’s the brand’s version of modern, with each piece exuding a warm yet architectural nature that invites conversation and comfort while emanating an understated, yet unavoidable, clean-lined elegance.

To showcase a behind-the-scenes take on what defines the New Modern, we sat down with Allison O’Connor, President, and CEO of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, to get an unvarnished look at the breadth of the collection and some insight into the inspiration behind some of our favorite pieces. We hope you enjoy the discussion as much as we did!

Downtown:  How would you describe the essence of the new Fall Collection?

Allison O’Connor, President & CEO of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams: Our Fall Collection focuses on warm and welcoming design with an architectural appeal, a blend of beautiful craftsmanship, and timeless style. We’re drawn to elements that both look and feel luxurious—like the deep and generous cushions in our sophisticated Montauk Sectional, so tailored yet still inviting. We’ve also been excited to work with even more exceptional materials this season. Our Hayes Dining Table, for example, is inspired by mid-century Italian design and features a stunning contrast of American walnut and lightly antiqued brass sheeting. You’ll find that a lot of thoughtful, design-driven detail has gone into this collection.

Decorative Pillows.

And at the heart of everything, of course, is customization: We love to see our customers express their own design voice through our brand, whether it’s choosing a favorite fabric from our exclusive Kravet library, or unique details like nailhead and finish.

Downtown: How did your definition of the New Modern inspire the direction of the collection?

Allison O’Connor: Most of us have experienced some major lifestyle shifts recently, and a lot of that has centered around home—how we interact with space at home, what home means for us. We’ve built deeply personal bonds with our concept of home, and at the design level, it has inspired us to consider how fresh, relevant design can elevate the way we live. This is the basis for the New Modern: It’s a deep reverence for living in the present, and for a customizable design that becomes part of the fabric of our homes, part of those memories we make. For us, it’s about creating interiors that are aesthetically pleasing but also support our busy lifestyles and families.

Keane Dining Table & Chairs.

Downtown: The cushions on the Montauk Modular Sectional look incredibly comfortable—while maintaining a very sophisticated yet casual look. What are some of the details that went into achieving the look and feel of the sofa?

Allison O’Connor: We conceptualized our Montauk Sectional to look effortlessly elevated, yet still be an irresistibly inviting place for everyone to gather thanks to its exceptionally versatile design. We love its Turkish corner cushions and deeply angled back—they create a very tailored yet sculptural appearance. We added a wood plinth base to complete the look with an understated foundation, and also offer some additional opportunities for customization with more than 20 wood finishes and over 600 fabrics.

Montauk 4-Piece Sectional.

Downtown: We particularly love the warmth of the Keane dining chair and the beach-vibe sophistication of the Portia Dining Chair (can’t you see this in an expansive Hamptons dining room with views of the ocean?). What do you most love about these two designs and what inspired their shape for this particular collection?

Allison O’Connor: Yes—absolutely, ocean views and all! Our Keane and Portia dining chairs are perfect examples of multifunctional sophisticated seating. Both have a fresh, modern feel that complements almost any style of the dining room, office, entry, or bedroom while enveloping you in an extremely comfortable sit. Keane, in particular, has a modern floating curved back and warm solid-maple wood frame accented with a plush seat and back that can be customized in fabric or leather. And the Portia Dining Chair is a modern slip-covered barrel chair for easy-care dining. With its loose seat and comfortable curved back, Portia is perfect for casual dining settings. And you can customize in a choice of hundreds of fabrics.

Portia Dining Chairs + Vann Dining Table.

Downtown: We are obsessed with pairing the Portia Dining Chair with the Vann Dining Table. What would be your ideal color palettes/finishes when using them together?

Allison O’Connor: I love that style pairing. Portia and Vann nicely balance uncomplicated form with a sophisticated feel. I like dining rooms to feel airy and relaxed, to gather my family and friends and share a meal together, and warm neutrals are a wonderful way to set the tone. For Portia, I’d choose MG+BW exclusive performance linen in Flax, a warm and grounded fabric that’s very family-friendly and also easy to care for. To complement that, I love the idea of our Vann Dining Table in the Weathered Oak finish—it really emphasizes its unique grain patterns from reclaimed wood.

Spindle Chair.

Downtown: We love the height and look of the Spindle chair. What types of frame finishes and fabric choices are available?

Allison O’Connor: You can customize our Spindle Chair from more than 600 fabrics and 40 types of leather, including performance fabrics, velvets, linens, chenille, and boucle. That also includes exclusive access to Kravet fabrics that were previously only available to designers. We also have more than 20 unique wood finishes to work with.

The beauty of Spindle is its exceptional craftsmanship—it features this very classic yet timeless turned-wood detailing, and it evokes a distinctive aesthetic depending on the finish. Choose something dark and smoky like Storm and you instantly have a very dramatic and modern piece or try something a bit rich and warm like Toffee and the chair evokes a very different kind of character. The spindle has unique upholstered details, as well, that add striking contrast against the frame—so choosing any favorite fabric is going to stand out beautifully.

Niles Bed.

Downtown: The Niles bed looks particularly enveloping. Is it as comfortable as it looks? What do you most love about it?

Allison O’Connor: Niles is the ultimate bed to choose for serene, cocoon-like comfort. It’s designed in a curved, overstuffed batwing silhouette with a sheltering headboard and rails that seem to wrap around you. It also features finely tailored seams that bring a level of sophistication without losing its warmth. I think it appeals to an instinctive part of us, almost like a hug. It’s just lovely. And that’s how a bedroom should feel—a sanctuary where we go to relax, recharge, and feel nurtured. If you want to experience our Niles Bed in the most luxurious way possible, customize it in a soft fabric like performance luxe velvet. You might not want to get out of bed in the morning.

Downtown: We love the Margaux Full Swivel Side Chair and its midcentury vibe—what inspired adding a much-loved swivel feature to such a gorgeous chair?

Margaux Swivel Chair.

Allison O’Connor: Our Margaux Side Chair is a much-loved part of the collection, with influence from mid-century Italian design. It’s already a fluid piece of furniture, with a svelte and smartly scaled frame that complements dining rooms, home offices, and entertainment areas of all dimensions. Then we realized that we could bring fresh appeal to this favorite by making it a swivel, so that this chic little accent chair can suddenly, truly, sit anywhere in style. The swivel version features a sleek metal base in two choices of finish, and we created a matching swivel ottoman to celebrate the design.

Downtown: The Tate Dining Table is a favorite—is the oak finish as textured as it looks? How many people can it comfortably accommodate?

Allison O’Connor: Yes, that fantastic texture is actually a striking sunburst veneer pattern over carbon oak. Our Tate Dining Table balances two key elements perfectly—modern minimalism and natural materials—in a very sleek and clean design. It has a tapered central column that you can comfortably seat six people around, so it’s a smart, design-forward choice for a dining room or an open-concept kitchen.

Tate Buffet.

Downtown: The Tate Buffet exemplifies everything we are loving about cane these days! What inspired the use of this material?

Allison O’Connor: The exquisite detail of materiality is centric to our design ethos. Our Tate Collection’s star material is carbon oak. It has this rich, varied texture that adds so much depth and character. The woven cane front of our Tate Buffet gave us an opportunity to juxtapose two very distinctive, natural textures to create a functional piece that feels at once organic and modern while balancing the drama of unrelieved black with some lightness.

Blake Media Console.

Downtown: The Blake Media Console shows a bit of a departure from the rest (at least in terms of the color palette). What do you most love about its place in the collection?

Allison O’Connor: Blake is a bold statement piece. Consoles can easily become the focal point in a room whether they’re staged in an entryway, office, living room or dining area, so we had some fun imagining how color, material and shape all command attention. Blake is built in the style of modern campaign furniture, so it has that inherent sense of functional structure and purpose. And to that, we added striking denim blue and satin brass hardware accents as a way to balance masculine form with a very fashion-forward concept. It’s completely unique in this season’s collection, and we love the personality that it brings to any space.

Hazel Flatweave Jute Rug.

Downtown: The Hazel Flatweave Jute Rug adds the perfect pop of color to almost any design in the collection. What inspired the color palette and what would you pair it with?

Allison O’Connor: It’s a beautiful accent, isn’t it? Hazel is one of the exceptional creations from our partnership with Obeetee, who is world-renowned for handmade rugs and carpets. They share a lot of our values, including respect for artisan craft, natural material, and a sustainable manufacturing process. Hazel is made from extremely soft jute so it’s not going to be scratchy underfoot, and the color palette evokes a cool vintage vibe through desaturated colors in warm, earthy tones. The geometric pattern is very current, but Hazel also has a relaxed feel to it, so it helps to set the tone in a modern casual space.

We love it paired with our Vann Dining Table, which has similar geometric lines and a natural look and feel. Grounding the space around our Montauk Sectional is also a great, harmonious look. But we want people to experiment, too, with their own design vision. Hazel is a very adaptable rug to any space—tell us where you’d put it!

Downtown: What are a couple of your favorite accessories in the collection? We cannot get over the Antwerp Boucle Throw in Camel!

Antwerp Boucle Throw.

Allison O’Connor: The Antwerp Boucle Throw is one of my favorites, as well. It’s so incredibly cozy, and something as simple as a boucle texture adds so much depth and character when it’s thrown over a sofa, armchair, chaise, or bed. Another favorite is our collection of Italian Carrara Marble barware—there’s a set of coasters, a lovely and curvaceous champagne bucket, and a large round serving tray. Carrara has a luminous lightness to it, and very faint striations in the stone. It’s a favorite of ours to work with because it adds such richness to a room without being overwhelming.

We also have a partnership with Lost Art Salon and an exclusive collection that we’ve curated with them that I love. Lost Art Salon brings rediscovered art to the public from history and underrepresented groups, with an emphasis on 20th Century Modernism. Our collection features striking watercolors, prints, and photography—modern pieces that reflect a unique vantage point through the lens of the artist.

Ojai Woven Leather Pillows.

Downtown: What are your favorite elements of the collection and which design would you take home with you today?

Allison O’Connor: I really do love how well our Fall Collection embraces modern design that’s completely approachable. Our Giselle Collection is a perfect example of that—it’s a luxurious statement collection, with gentle curves and an elegant profile that makes for gathering and igniting conversations. And the attention to detail speaks so eloquently to the craftsmanship of our artisans. Yet it’s also warm, generous, utterly comfortable—something you can sink into at the end of a long day without feeling like such a glamorous piece is off-limits for every day. Our furniture is made to be enjoyed. I’d take home everything in the Giselle Collection today.

5 Benefits of Working with a Designer in a Virtual World

As many of us are purposely spending more time at home these days, a rising demand for interior enhancements has hit the market. And with it, comes a natural uncertainty of how to approach a design upgrade when the end goal is to work with a professional. Simply picking out luxurious new bedding or that plush sofa you have been pining after doesn’t always do the job.

But lucky for us, many designers have been working with remote clients for quite a long time—and it’s much more personal and collaborative than most would expect. To get a more rounded out picture, we spoke to Turett Collaborative’s Director of Interior Design Jessica Shaw, who shared some insight on the benefits of working virtually with an interior designer.

5 Benefits of Working with an Interior Designer in a Virtual World
by Jessica Shaw

  1. See Your Desired Design in 3D Before You Commit

Designers are known for creating floor plans and mood boards, but a virtual world offers the opportunity to find a designer that can go beyond these traditional models. Search for one who is skilled in using 3D design software and can provide you with a virtual walk-thru of your newly desired environment. What was once a costly endeavor, now has become a competitive edge.  Not only will you be able to see what your space will look like without having to “imagine” it, but this also allows you to adjust the design without making costly purchasing mistakes.

  1. Access to an Informed Personal Shopper

While “shopping” has always been part of the job description for a designer, it’s more important now than ever before. If you are not comfortable going to a store, a designer can go for you.  They also have access to private furniture lines and advanced knowledge of their products. Your designer can provide honest insights you need to make informed product decisions. Plus, they have access to samples and can send you materials and finishes for you to review without you ever having to leave the comfort of your own home.

  1. The Mute Button is Your Money & Time-Saving Friend

Being proactive by prepping for your virtual call and utilizing the mute button can not only streamline the design process, but it can save you time and money when dealing with hourly rates. Whether you are the only one involved in the decision-making process or are consulting with others, use the mute button on virtual calls to honestly discuss in real-time what you like and don’t like for a more efficient meeting. Be sure to also ask your designer to send you the floor plans, ideas, and furniture suggestions before your call so you can review them and make more thoughtful decisions.

Insider tip: Since designers are visual people, share your design style, and taste digital by creating a Pinterest board or PPT presentation of images. This will not only save time on the initial design meeting, but it gives your designer a true sense of your taste. Be sure to also virtually introduce the people who live/work in the space and include information they might not otherwise “see” virtually. IE: if your partner is 6ft tall and you are 5 ft tall, that might not come across on camera and can be important when specifying furniture or hanging artwork. Or if your partner or kids are notorious for spilling on the rug every morning, make sure your designer knows to get a rug that’s easy to clean up. An added benefit: you might learn something new about yourself, your partner, or your family member.

  1. Throw Out Your Calendar & Say Hello to a Scheduling Guru with a Deep Rolodex of Skilled Tradespeople

It is more important now than ever to know who is in your home, when they will be there, and to fully understand the installation, new construction, and renovation process. Does the painter come before the electrician or after? How do you know if the painter is a professional? As COVID-related issues have delayed this process, a skilled designer knows how to manage people and get them in and out in a more timely manner. Plus, since they have connections to and regularly work with professional installers, tradespeople and subcontractors you will get on the schedule faster.

  1. Gain a Safety Advocate & Enforcer

It can be challenging and uncomfortable to enforce others to wear masks, shoe booties, gloves, and apply social distancing in your home. To take the burden off of yourself, your designer can act as your safety advocate and voice any concerns you might have. This could include implementing cleaning and safety protocols to ensure you are comfortable from start to finish.

5 Bedroom Design Tips from Daun Curry

Since most of us are spending more and more time at home these days, we tapped award-winning interior designer Daun Curry for some advice on how to design a bedroom that feels like a sanctuary. See below for some of her tips on how to create a space that most works for you!

Design by Daun Curry; Photography by Emily Gilbert.

5 Bedroom Design Tips from Daun Curry

“Your bedroom is the most intimate, personal space in your home. It should be a place to unwind, relax, and disconnect from the world at large. The design should also most embody what encompasses a sanctuary to you. While there are a range of tips to recommend when creating your own personal haven—such as investing in luxurious linens and bedding—your bedroom should reflect your personality, unique sensibility, and the colors and design elements that best help you recharge.” – Daun Curry

1) Introduce Elements of Whimsy

If whimsy is what you gravitate towards, embrace it. From light and airy drapes and swirl-laden painterly pillows that recall the colors of the sea to wallcoverings with a sense of movement, these rooms exude a gorgeous flight of fancy. Despite their differing color palettes, each design incorporates layers and gradations of the same color family to create a soothing ambiance.

2) Infuse Your Vacation Home’s Bedrooms with a Lighthearted, Playful Feel

When you’re on vacation, your environment should reflect your state of mind. Designing for different age groups and/or a personal room or guest room should all take different factors into account. For kids’ rooms, fun furnishings such as bunk beds and geometric rugs in eye-popping, complementing colors are the perfect way to create a playful ambiance. Meanwhile, in a guest bedroom, it’s important to keep an air of sophistication while also instilling a more carefree, insouciant ambiance into the space. Perfectly tailored, layered bedding in shades of sunny colors, a defined area rug, elevated artwork that recalls beach house living, and linen upholstered beds create a picture of relaxation with a big dose of finesse. In the main room, make sure to take advantage of any natural light and the views. Next, focus on comfort—layer your bed in fresh, luxurious bedding, add in bold pops of color, soft carpet underfoot, extra seating, and lighting for all needs.

3) Create a Luxurious Seating Area

Your bedroom should be your escape—so whether it’s a seating nook, window seat, or adding in plush chairs, swivel chairs, or a bench, including this essential element in your bedroom will offer you just that extra bit of comfort. From having a cozy place to perch while getting ready for dinner to curling up in a reading nook or enjoying a morning coffee (or a nightly glass of wine) while in your pajamas, you’ll be surprised at how much enjoyment you’ll gain from this simple addition.

4) Incorporate Texture

Incorporating texture into your design scheme can add visual interest and a sense of warmth—especially when it’s tone on tone. From silk-textured and grasscloth wallpapers, to ceilings finished in shimmery Venetian plaster, metallics, dimensional paintings, and antiqued mirrored furnishings, each well-placed inclusion will add depth, tactility, and a sense of balance. Texture can also facilitate in creating a seamless flow—drawing your eye exactly where it should go.

5) Pattern, Pattern, and More Pattern

Don’t be afraid of using multiple patterns at once—you can easily layer varying designs that work well together rather than fight each other. Unexpected pairings in fashion are considered daring in the most stimulating of ways, and the same can be said when it comes to design. While you might not want to go completely bold and vibrant in the bedroom as lighter colors create a more restful ambiance, differing patterns in neutral shades and lighter hues create visual appeal.

Designer Daun Curry’s 5 Tips to Turn Your Home Into a Sanctuary

Since we are all adjusting to working from home these days, we tapped award-winning interior designer Daun Curry for some advice on how to balance it all. As Daun is currently operating her design business from home, she’s reflected on the importance of making your space a sanctuary while in quarantine.

Interior Designer Daun Curry’s 5 Tips to Turn Your Home Into a Sanctuary While in Quarantine

“A sanctuary should be all about personal preference and livable luxury. There is nothing more comforting than curling up in fresh new bed linens or on that lived-in piece of furniture you have loved for years. It’s surprising how much the energy of your space can change by simply livening it up with warm, earthy palettes, and infusing it with soothing scents, fresh-cut flowers, and cozy throws. Below are some of my easy-to-accomplish tips on how to turn your home into your own personal sanctuary.” – Daun Curry

1) Throw Family Dinners and Brunches

Design by Daun Curry; Photograph by Emily Gilbert.

A formal dining room or any dining vignette and/or breakfast nook in a home can form a beautiful focal point, but it needs to be used! One of life’s great pleasures is bringing people together to share a meal, and it’s a shame that so many dining rooms sit unused. It’s tempting to keep a dining areas perfectly styled and photo-ready, but as we are all confined to our homes, it has become increasingly apparent how important breaking bread with family can be. A beautifully designed room really shines when it’s full of people to bring it to life—this is the time to be grateful and share with the ones we love. You won’t regret the wonderful memories you will create.

2) Invest in Quality Textiles

Design by Daun Curry; Photograph by Emily Gilbert.

Nothing lets a room down more than tired linens and textiles, and a great way to kick off a fresh new vibe is by giving your bedroom a refresh with new bed linens. You spend a third of your life sleeping, so don’t cut corners with this—go with serene neutrals and interesting textures for a calming and restorative night’s sleep.

3) Declutter the Closet

Design by Daun Curry; Photograph by Emily Gilbert.

It might sound like a cliche, but our new home-bound reality offers the perfect opportunity to give your closet some long overdue attention. We’re not talking about a once-a-year purge—but a commitment to maintaining a closet that’s chic, organized, and a place where you actually feel inspired when getting dressed in the morning. There is nothing more important than keeping to a healthy routine right now—and that involves getting dressed for the day. An organized closet will offer a simplicity of ease in selecting an ensemble to start the day off on a positive note.

4) Bring in Biophilic Design Elements

Design by Daun Curry; Photograph by Emily Gilbert.

Incorporating nature into the built environment is a primary tenet of biophilic design. With an increased focus on wellbeing and the effect on the population at large by incorporating these design elements, it’s no wonder the trend is here to stay. While we don’t necessarily have every option available to us, the simplicity of adding in fresh cut flowers—even wildflowers—adds a surprising amount of cheer. In addition, don’t take the benefits of natural light for granted. A sunlit room can make all the difference—open your curtains! Rearrange your workstations so that the sunlight pours in and livens up your mood and your space. There is a reason light therapy lamps are made to combat winter blues and darker days—light helps your body stay in tune with the natural rhythms designed to inform your internal body clock.

5) Aromatherapy

Design by Daun Curry; Photograph by Emily Gilbert.

There are a multitude of studied benefits in regards to the use of aromatherapy to enhance your psychological and physical wellbeing. From including droplets of serenity-enhancing essential oils, such as lavender on pillows, linens, and in baths, to the aroma of fresh flowers and scented candles, it’s all about creating an inviting ambiance to promote relaxation and rest.

6 MAKER MEN TO 💘 AT THE AD DESIGN SHOW 2020

Since we’re quite enthused over Valentine’s Day, but don’t necessarily crave flowers, chocolates, and all the other love tropes adorning every aspect of our daily commutes, we thought we’d bring you something a little different this year to properly channel your ardor. Design ardor that is. This year’s Architectural Digest Design Show (held March 19–22, at Pier 94), is chock-full of gorgeous designs, featuring everything from furnishings, to accessories, art, appliances, and shops full of beautiful merchandise—where, yes, you can purchase a coveted piece and take it right home. While you can peruse the aisles by section, including REFRESH, SHOPS, FURNISH, and MADE, we are turning the tables this Valentine’s and focusing our love on the stylish men of MADE and their show-stopping designs.

Reed Hansuld and Joel Seigle of Harold

Reed Hansuld and Joel Seigle of Brooklyn-based Harold, took their love of industrial design and high-end chair building to create gorgeous furniture—candelabras, coffee tables, and sconces included—that stands the test of time. Their new sconce—which was inspired by the duo’s admiration for the setting sun—perfectly recalls the beauty of a sunset at its prime. Fun fact? Both Seigle and Hansuld had grandfathers named Harold.

Piet Houtenbos

Piet Houtenbos’s career began at Modernlink—a purveyor of Midcentury Modern masterpieces—where he honed his understanding of proportion and the ideals of modern design with an award-winning collection, Onelink. Today, his sculptural designs each feature unexpected moments, intriguing shapes, and elements of whimsy. The Halsey Fracture Dresser, which comes in various custom finishes and hardware options, is one of our favorites.

Justin Nelson of Fernweh Woodworking

Justin Nelson started Fernweh Woodworking in 2015 with no formal training in woodworking. When his first furniture line item debuted in 2017, he took the world by storm. His award-winning design for the Sling Chair came next, and the rest is design history. His Oxbend chair (above left) was born from a desire to create an elegant yet organic dining chair that exemplified the beauty of simplicity. From this design, the Oxbend Bench was born. It’s subtle, handcrafted tubular curves showcase just how adroit Nelson is with his hands.

Brett Miller of Jack Rabbit Studio

Did you ever think you would absolutely adore stumpy furniture? Neither did we, but Brett Miller’s Hudson Valley-based furniture design studio, Jack Rabbit Studio, is putting forth some incredibly beautiful (and comfortable) thick-lined furniture. From the aptly named Chubby Chair (shown above) to new two-leg dining chairs that form part of his Funky Bunch collection, these are some elegant yet whimsical designs.

Andrew Finnigan Works

Andrew Finnigan, a studio furniture maker in New York’s Hudson Valley, continues the tradition of handcrafted work. Through his eponymous studio, Finnigan Works, he puts designs forth that not only employ traditional methods of construction, but relay both a classic and unique appeal at the same time. Finnigan’s simple yet inviting oiled maple desk is enhanced by chestnut bridle leather.

Q&A with Multitalented Designer, Emma O’Donnell

Emma O’Donnell, a graduate from the acclaimed KLC School of Design in London, began her career as a jewelry designer. Today, her company, Coolabah Designs, has evolved to include interior and garden design. Emma has completed projects large and small all over New York and London and has offices in both New York City and the Hudson Valley.

Emma O’Donnell of Coolabah Designs.

Downtown: What is your company, Coolabah Designs, known for?

Emma O’Donnell: Initially we were known for jewelry design. I started the brand in 2008 making fine (and fashion) jewelry sold in the UK and European market. In 2012 I expanded my focus to interior design and have been mostly focused on that ever since.

Downtown: When and what drove you to found Coolabah Designs? What is the meaning behind the name?

Emma O’Donnell: After about 15 years working as an HR executive in a global professional services firm, I wanted to tap into my more creative self. I thus started to make jewelry. The name comes from the Australian coolabah tree, the eucalyptus tree in the iconic Aussie song, Waltzing Matilda. My Australian husband and my frequent travels to the country influenced the name a bit.

Downtown: As a company that has offices in both NYC and the Hudson Valley, how do you balance your time? How has this been a boon and a challenge for Coolabah Designs?

Emma O’Donnell: Having a foothold in both areas has been great for me—I understand the frenetic NYC environment but I also the need to reconnect with nature and to create a home outside the city. This has helped me with client relationships, both old and new, and lends me credibility in both environments.

Design by Emma O’Donnell.

Downtown: Do you always work on residential interiors and gardens hand-in-hand, or do you often get hired separately for each?

Emma O’Donnell: So far I have been hired independently for interiors and gardens, but my work has spilled over in the other arena as well. For example, a Tribeca client who hired me to do their terrace has also used my interior design services for a couple of her residences.

Downtown:
What are the benefits to a homeowner to hiring you for both interiors and garden design?

Emma O’Donnell: My ability to read the client’s style lends itself to an integrated approach inside and out; so if the style of the client is modern, I can keep the look cohesive and have both spaces be reflections of each other.

Downtown:
Tell us about your aesthetic! What design principles are carried throughout your work, client style aside?

Emma O’Donnell: The look I aim for is modern, but warm and comfortable. I like to select timeless, natural, high-quality materials such as real wood, wool, leather, cotton, and linen. Furniture made with quality materials can last a lifetime and in 10 years can be refreshed with new upholstery or a new stain. I like to reuse or recycle the client’s pieces as much as possible to minimize the carbon footprint of the project.

Downtown: When you design outdoor terraces and gardens, what are elements you always keep in mind when planning the design?

Emma O’Donnell: Space planning is always key. I select furniture that will fit well in the space and create multiple room-like areas in the garden. I usually pick a simple color scheme of greys and black, but I often use plants to serve as the jewelry. Last but not least, I always incorporate lighting that illuminates the garden and plants at night to create a magical space.

Downtown: When you say you create “low carbon footprint designs,” can you explain to our readers how you implement these elements into each design?

Design by Emma O’Donnell.

Emma O’Donnell: I am drawn to real materials such as solid wood, natural fabrics, and wool or silk rugs. They are timeless and will last a long time. If the furniture is of a high quality, then as the styles change it can be reupholstered for a new look. I also like to purchase mid-century pieces that have lived a long and interesting life. Throw-away furniture ends up in landfills and I stay away from that. From a lighting perspective, I select the latest LED fixtures that allow of a very low energy use in the home.

Downtown: What has been one of your favorite projects and why?

Emma O’Donnell: That is like being asked to pick my favorite child. But one of my favorite projects has been my design for a Chelsea Loft. This project touched every surface and it was a gut renovation of a 2,500-square-foot-space. I enjoyed working with everyone and helping my client select tile, fixtures, new lights,  and designing the kitchen and bathrooms. The final result turned out beautifully and the client has received rave reviews from all, which is very rewarding.

Downtown: From what we understand you also create fine jewelry pieces! How does this relate to your interiors and garden design work?

Emma O’Donnell: I originally stated making jewelry and then after a while thought about using my metalworking skills to make light fixtures, etc. I continue to make jewelry at my studio in the Hudson Valley, but it has taken a bit of a back seat to my residential interior and garden design.

Downtown: What are some of your favorite pieces and why?

Emma O’Donnell: My favorite pieces are my rings. They are organic, timeless, heavy and, substantial.

Downtown: We love the organic nature and metallic finishes on your jewelry, what draws you to these elements?

Emma O’Donnell: I believe that it all stems from being a fan of simple, useful, and modern design. It’s pure instinct, it stems from a place deep inside me.

Downtown: Where can clients purchase your jewelry?

Emma O’Donnell: Of course, clients can buy my jewelry! Currently I have my modern rings available in yellow and rose gold at Hummingbird Jewelers in Rhinebeck, NY. These and other pieces are shown on my website can also be purchased by contacting me directly at emma@coolabahdesigns.com.
