HUMANS Using their Knowledge and Experience to Defeat this Disease

WE HAVE MADE INCREDIBLE PROGRESS over the last five months.

New York State was the nation’s first epicenter and now we are one of the very few states where COVID is under control. We didn’t just bend the curve, we shattered it—thanks to the effort and smart choices of all New Yorkers.

Total hospitalizations have fallen below 600, reaching record lows. We are testing more than any other state and more than any other country per capita, and thousands of contact tracers are working around the clock to trace and prevent outbreaks. Every community in the state is now in Phase 4 of reopening. Happily, the infection rate has continued to decline even as the whole state entered Phase 4, showing that our cautious and science-based approach to reopening worked.

All this progress, however, comes with a flashing caution sign. Our state still faces two dangerous threats.

The first is the threat of COVID spreading from other states. In response to this threat, we have issued a travel advisory for people coming from states with high COVID rates, but our progress remains at risk until the COVID pandemic is under control nationally.

The second threat is that we become lax and let our guard down, allowing the virus to spread. Unlike the threat from outside infections, this one is in our control. We have the ability and the duty to act responsibly. That means wearing a mask. It means not hosting or attending large and crowded parties. It means getting tested, especially if you have symptoms, and it means cooperating with contact tracers if you are positive for COVID. In brief, it means looking out for one another.

Finally, I know that for all New Yorkers, this has been an extremely trying experience— whether you lost a loved one, a job, or if you continue to lose sleep due to the stress of this pandemic. I mourn with all New Yorkers on behalf of all those lost to this virus, and I share in the anxiety, too.

But we are New York Tough.

I have no doubt that we can continue our progress in our fight against COVID by depending upon the solidarity, strength, and compassion that makes New York New York.

Ever Upward.

A letter from Governor Andrew Cuomo

AS A LIFELONG NEW YORKER

born during the height of the Great Depression, I have watched with utter amazement at how this incredible town has, by sheer force of will, turned itself into a worldwide colossus in business, technology, media, arts, culture, and so much more. differences between the events of 9/11, which unfolded over a span of 102 minutes, and the slow-motion crisis that is the coronavirus. At the same time, there are some striking similarities that provide both a roadmap and a source of optimism for New York’s ultimate recovery. First and foremost is the extreme heroism we are witnessing from our fellow New Yorkers on the front lines.

In 2001, it was the firefighters, police officers, and construction workers who rushed in and did what they could to protect and save complete strangers. As anyone who lived through that period can tell you, their bravery, selflessness and kinship set the tone for the entire recovery and rebuilding effort.

This time around, we are taking our cues from the doctors, nurses, and emergency responders who are serving as the models of courage, grit, and community. In 2001, New Yorkers lined the West Side Highway to salute our first responders. Today, they lean out of their windows at 7 pm each evening to applaud our healthcare workers.

LIKE ALL NEIGHBORHOODS IN NEW YORK CITY, Lower Manhattan is pulling together in this time of profound global crisis. We are so proud to be part of this diverse and caring community, and continue to be inspired by the many local organizations and leaders devoted to helping our neighbors survive the pandemic and lay the groundwork for NYC’s economic recovery.

We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with nonprofits and organizations providing a lifeline amid these challenges, and we ask all who are able to please join us in supporting

the important efforts of groups like the City Council District 1 Food Pantry, with which we have worked over the past months as part of
an initiative spearheaded by Council Member Margaret Chin to provide meals and groceries to seniors and residents with limited food access; the Bowery Mission, which leads essential hunger relief services in Lower Manhattan and helped to distribute food donated by Seaport District restaurants as they prepared to close

in April; TUFF-LES housing advocates, who continue to provide food to residents in need in our area, including to the Smith Houses and 82 Rutgers Slip; Grand Street Settlement, which has been working to get groceries to vulnerable and elderly residents; and the Chinese-American Planning Council, which runs a vital program for home-bound seniors.

HHC is also committed to supporting the small businesses that fuel the Seaport economy. In partnership with Lower Manhattan property owners and led by the Downtown Alliance, we have established an emergency fund to provide area restaurants emergency cash grants as they get back on their feet.

We especially want to commend the extraordinary first responders and healthcare workers for their ongoing strength and sacrifice. We were pleased to donate PPE to New York Presbyterian-Lower Manhattan and FDNY Fire Engine 6, as well as provide meals from local restaurants to our Sanitation depot at Pier 36 and the NYPD 1st Precinct.

Seeing the work of so many after 9/11 and Superstorm Sandy, and now, on the front lines of this pandemic over the past several months, we are confident that the Seaport and Downtown will emerge stronger, more equitable, and more resilient than ever.

We look forward to continuing to work together to ensure our neighborhood and the city’s recovery.

Staycation Imaginative Rooftop – The Greens

A fun summer destination and you don’t even need a passport. Howard Hughes Seaport does it again!

Come on snap out of it, let’s get rid of the doom and gloom! There’s a lot of positive going on in New York City.

Perfectly socially distanced, your own personal roof deck within a roof deck, The Greens

When we arrived, we were clueless. This touch-free, on-your-phone ordering was a bit much at first. No problem–the manager was happy to come over to help. She was delightful and informative.

Let’s put it this way: you cannot overhear your neighbor’s conversation. I don’t know if you can get this much private space on a nonprivate roof deck anywhere else in New York City and still be outside. They kept an extremely clean environment–we were delighted to see wipe downs and proper cleaning going on the entire time we were there.

It’s only their second week but they’re off to a great start.

Cheryl and I chose a tasting from each category.

We started with the cocktails. I had the Jalapeno – Watermelon Margarita, hornitos, jalapeno-infused watermelon juice, agave, kiwi liquor float. Our Sustainable Fashion Editor Cherly Lefkovits had the Vodka Soda – grey goose, club soda, both delicious and refreshing for this hot summer evening.

We started out with tuna tartare with preserved lemon, Calabrian chili, kalamata olives, and shrimp cocktail. The shrimp cocktail was delicious, cold, fresh, and just what was needed to start the evening off.

In between, we had a delicious order of french fries with garlic aioli, the corn on the cob. and the lobster roll with mustard mayo, sunburst tomato, and tarragon.

NYC’s ultimate socially distanced restaurant experience

Our final dish was the Grilled Faroe Island Salmon and Summer Squash Kebab with a delicious salsa verde lime, perfectly cooked, and the delicious mouth-watering Cheddar Cheeseburger, with passion fruit BBQ sauce, grilled onions, yes, and more french fries. Don’t judge!

We were hoping to make it to dessert but we couldn’t get there

Important: do not overdress. The atmosphere warrants shorts, casual sundresses, jeans, and bring your bathing suit and towels. There’s no pool but trust me it’s a perfect place to get a fabulous suntan.

A great place for families, date night, or just time out with your BFFs

Your cabana area can hold up to eight people comfortably, with beautiful sun umbrellas that have small white decorative lighting in the evening, cabana-style lounge chairs, and faux grass to frolic on. Don’t worry about an extra phone charger–they thought of that. Forgot your sunscreen? no problem! it’s on the menu.

Just before we left we had a chance to meet the handsome Chef Noah. Ladies, we’re not sure if he’s single but definitely say hello to him during your visit. Be sure to tell him Grace and Cheryl, from Downtown, sent you. The chef was personable, he took the time to chat with us about our evening and our meal.

Throughout the Summer THE GREENS will host various additional programs and even more fun experiences.

Anticipate Seaport Cinema’s dinner & movie nights, live music, and DJs as part of Seaport Sounds, presented by Heineken, and more!

New York’s Generosity COVID19

We wanted to take the time to share some of the many who have displayed generosity and kindness during this pandemic. From celebrity hairstylists Patrick Kyle, Iron Chef Marc Forgione, Elisabeth Holder of Laudrèe USA, Harry’s Italian, and Da Claudio Restaurant, to Howard Hughes Seaport. You will read their words and see their photos as we salute their selfless acts.

Last Thursday was a day Patrick Kyle will never forget.

My buddy, Jordan @jordanehni (Infectious Disease Director @mountsinai_bethisrael ) was looking for barbers and hairstylists to volunteer to give health care workers much-needed haircuts. After discussing protective measures, I agreed to participate. Over 400 people entered a raffle for the cuts. Six were chosen to meet me in the “Wellness Room” for haircuts. I had full PPE (scrubs, mask, gloves and face shield). Clients were given a fresh mask and robe as they walked into the room. I felt completely safe. The love and appreciation I received will stay with me forever. Little did they know I felt normal for the first time in weeks getting to do something I love — servicing my clients

Celebrity hairstylist Patrick Kyle @patrickkyle_ generously donated six haircuts to front line employees at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Patrick is a freelance hairstylist whose credits include Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, and New York Fashion Week.

Employees entered a raffle, and six lucky winners received a haircut and styling, snacks, music, and aromatherapy treatment as a part of a larger wellness plan to help keep COVID-19 frontline workers rejuvenated for the long journey ahead. We are all missing access to basic services, and we are grateful to Patrick for volunteering his time and truly connecting with our healthcare heroes.

Winners: Millie Rosario, emergency department tech; Dr. Arielle Sasson, first-year resident; Marco Makkar, emergency department registrar; Dr. Anthoney Lim, medical director of the pediatrics ER. #selfcare #frontlines #COVID19 #msbibettertogether #wellnesswednesday

When New York City shut down, brothers Frank and Salvatore Buglione decided with their co-owners at the restaurant group HPH NYC  –

‘WE JUST PULL UP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND DROP OFF FOOD’: WHY HARRY’S ITALIAN DECIDED TO STAY OPEN

to keep both their Harry’s Italian locations open. “You always hate to see any restaurant go completely dark,” HPH partner Paul Lamas told the Downtown Alliance. “We wanted to try and keep some of our key employees, key staff working. Everybody wanted to work. We really wanted to do something to help the community.”

Beyond their neighborhood regulars, HPH and the Bugliones identified plenty of other mouths to feed in Manhattan. They tapped a number of their food purveyors and liquor vendors to see who’d be willing to chip in — the restaurant would match any donation — to serve first responders (e.g. NYPD’s 1st Precinct, Engine 4 and Ladder 15 on South Street, NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital). “We’re not here looking to make money or make this any publicity stunt,” Salvatore told the Alliance. “We do our best work when people are not looking. We just keep dropping off food — we don’t even ask any questions. We just pull up to the emergency room and drop off food.

I always feel we do the easy part,” Salvatore added. “Okay, we’re dropping off some food. It’s more about what these hospital workers are going through. They’re dealing with patients every day.”

The Bugliones work 18- and 19-hour days to do what they’re doing. At around 7 or 8 each morning, they turn on the ovens and wait for the orders to come in. Before they know it, Salvatore said, “we turn around and it’s 11 o’clock at night.” They’re not even tired, he said. “It’s unbelievable: You don’t realize 15 hours went by and you’re still strong.”

One World Trade Center, Pier 17 at the Seaport District, Brookfield Place, 111 and 115 Broadway, 55 Water Street and 20 Exchange Place will be participating in this effort, while other Downtown buildings are working to join them over the next several days. Buildings throughout the entire city are encouraged to follow suit and add their own “lights of hope.”

“This is a moment to band together, show pride in a tough time, and light up the Lower Manhattan skyline with hope,” said Jessica Lappin, President of the Alliance for Downtown New York.  “Whether it’s red, white and blue or with a single white beacon, buildings across Lower Manhattan will light themselves in honor of our determination to endure and recover.”

“In this time of need, we as New Yorkers and Americans are looking for symbols of hope—both in our communities and across the country,” said Saul Scherl, President of the New York Tri-State Region of The Howard Hughes Corporation. “We wanted to unite our community and light up the buildings of Lower Manhattan together to show our solidarity, our resiliency, and our persistent hope for the future.”

Stay tuned for more generosity from New Yorkers taking the time to give back during this unprecedented time.

WWD & The Howard Hughes Corporation announce its 2017 Ten Of Tomorrow list

Earlier this week, WWD announced its 2017 Ten of Tomorrow list, an annual feature recognizing 10 leaders in fashion and retail innovation, as supported through sponsorship from The Howard Hughes Corporation. Both organizations are incubators for unique fashion, design and retail and are invested in embracing the next generation of industry leaders. This commitment to the future of retail continues to provide a glimpse into the transformation currently underway at the Seaport District, highlighted by the only U.S. location of iconic Italian retailer 10 Corso Como.

The Seaport District is currently being revitalized by The Howard Hughes Corporation and will encompass seven buildings on several city blocks totaling more than 400,000 square feet of cutting-edge culinary, fashion, entertainment and cultural experiences, including a 40,000 square foot food market by Jean-Georges in the restored Tin Building that will rival the world’s most popular food concepts and the first Manhattan location of premier cinema operator iPic Theaters that opened last fall. In the new Pier 17 building, culinary powerhouses Jean-Georges Vongerichten and the Momofuku Group led by David Chang will be opening restaurants as the first to be announced in what will become an unparalleled range of dining options in the District.

The 2017 WWD Ten of Tomorrow honorees include: Wen Zhou, CEO of Phillip Lim, Sam Cheow, Chief Product Accelerator at L’Oréal, Tiffany Masterson of Drunk Elephant, Apolis, Jay W. Sammons, Managing Director and head of the Global Consumer and Retail team at The Carlyle Group, Julia Hamilton Trost, Business Development and Content Partnerships at Google, Harper Reed, Lotte Volkova, Molly Goddard and Sabrina Fung, Executive Director of Fung Retailing. Over the course of the year, deeper profiles on each of the winners will be shared through both the WWD and Seaport District digital channels.

“Ten of Tomorrow is one of WWD’s most popular features of the year as it highlights individuals pushing new creative ideas that are helping to shape the fashion and retail industries. This year, we once again have a fascinating mix of designers and talented executives who are challenging the status quo,” said Miles Socha, editor in chief of WWD. “We are pleased to continue our partnership with The Howard Hughes Corporation as its Seaport District transformation helps shape the future of retail, fashion and art in New York City.”

“We are honored to continue our partnership with WWD for a third year, recognizing the exceptional talent that will shape the future of fashion and retail,” said David R. Weinreb, Chief Executive Officer for The Howard Hughes Corporation. “The Seaport District is on its way to becoming an anchor for distinct fashion, retail and entertainment experiences. As the city’s original commercial hub and birthplace of innovation, it is especially fitting for the Seaport to support fashion’s rising stars.”
