OZY Media’s third annual OZY FEST has been extended to two days this year—July 21-22 on Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. The massive event, described by the New York Times as “part music festival, part TED Talk, part food fair” is New York’s answer to SXSW. It features world-class entertainers, thought leaders, celebrity chefs, artists, and more. This week, the OZY team announced a major name to the lineup, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Secretary Clinton will be interviewed by President and Founder of Emerson Collective Laurene Powell Jobs, on the first day of the festival, July 21.

Other headliners include Common and Grouplove, Chelsea Handler, Laverne Cox, Jake Tapper, Taye Diggs, designer Christian Siriano, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Padma Lakshmi, authors Salman Rushdie, Roxanne Gay, and Malcolm Gladwell, celebrity chefs Marcus Samuelsson and Roy Choi, Martha Stewart, and many others.

Says OZY Media Co-founder and CEO Carlos Watson, “OZY FEST is a massive party that descends upon New York City, bringing together the most diverse group of performers, thinkers, chefs, and entertainers. It’s an unprecedented exchange of ideas and the most fun you’ll have all year. This year we’re taking over Central Park for two days of laugh-out-loud comedy, delicious food, and the hottest music. You don’t want to miss it!”

Organizers bill OZY FEST as an experience rather than just a run-of-the-mill concert/festival performance, and last year’s festival attracted over 5,000 people. In addition, previous events have included headliners such as Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, as well as Jason Derulo, Issa Rae, Katie Couric, and Senator Cory Booker. Guests experienced new technology, amazing eats, and electric musical performances. Plus, they listened to provocative speakers with expertise in everything from politics to the arts.

VIP tickets to the two-day event include complimentary food and drinks, celebrity meet-and-greets, and reserved premier seating. General admission tickets include all-access passes to the festival grounds, gourmet food experiences and merchandise to try-and-buy. In addition, tickets can be purchased as a two-day pass, or individual day passes for either Saturday, July 21 or Sunday, July 22.

Women’s March On Washington Draws Large Crowd

One day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the nation’s capital was flooded with a sea of pink hats worn by activists and protesters from around the country.

Sporting signs with slogans such as “Dump Trump” and “We want a leader,” participants of the organized Women’s March grassroots effort snaked down Washington’s streets in opposition of the new president’s ideologies and beliefs. Multiple attendees said they decided to attend to oppose President Donald Trump’s denigration of women, immigrants and minorities.

Some speakers at the five-hour rally preceding the Jan. 21 march included Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, actress America Ferrera and women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem.

“This is the upside of the downside. This is an outpouring of energy and true democracy like I have never seen in my very long life,” Steinem said to the crowd. “It is wide in age. It is deep in diversity. And remember, the constitution does not begin with ‘I the president,” it begins with ‘we the people.’”

The official number of attendees has yet to be determined, but the city’s metro system tweeted that over one million people rode the Metrorail on the day of the protest; event organizers had originally sought a permit for 200,000, according to the National Park Service’s permit application list obtained by Politico. D.C. police confirmed Jan. 22 that they had made no arrests related to the march.

“We are marching. We are marching straight ahead toward the Washington Monument to the ellipse of the White House,” read a press statement released by the Women’s March organization during the event. Police kept the White House blocked off during the march with barricades and police cars.

Protester Lisa Wisman said she flew in by herself from Michigan after purchasing her plane tickets the week before.

“I just feel like the things that Donald Trump is doing deserve to be protested and he needs to be held accountable,” she said. “He’s made all these promises and lies and the people need to take back their ability to hold their elected officials accountable. And protesting is one of the ways that I’m doing that.”

Joe Giro said he came into the city from upstate New York with friends.

“I want my nine-month old niece to grow up in a world that’s not filled with hate, and at least…where women are accepted,” he said.

President Donald Trump did not comment during the event on Twitter, the social media outlet widely regarded as one of his favorite ways to communicate with the public. However, Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic opponent during the presidential race, used Twitter to show her support for the march.

“Thanks for standing, speaking & marching for our values @womensmarch. Important as ever. I truly believe we’re always Stronger Together,” Clinton tweeted the morning of the event.

Nearby the march, the “Bikers for Trump” group had also reserved a space in the city to hold “an event of celebrations provided by the biker community,” said R.C. Pittman, president of Florida’s Bikers For Trump.

“We’ve opened this park up to anyone who wants to celebrate with us. The women are welcome, protesters are welcome; I haven’t run anybody off. We don’t have any fences up,” he said. In front of the Bikers for Trump stage, both protesters and Trump supporters were sitting and dancing to music.

Ahad Yonus, who donned a hat emblazoned with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, said he went by the Women’s March protest to “see both sides of the spectrum.”

“Protesting is one of the rights protected by the first amendment, but I feel like the people here might not necessarily know what they’re protesting,” he said. Yonus also denounced riots that had ensued the previous day, saying “protesting is ok, our democracy is working, but that doesn’t mean set a limo on fire, go break a McDonalds and knock all the windows out.”

Following the march, the Women’s March website stated that “millions” of people around the world had participated in total, which included the simultaneous “sister marches” held in locations such as New York, NY, Chicago and Atlanta.

Highlights From The Launch Party Of Downtown Magazine’s Fall 2016 Issue

 

 

On Oct. 18, Downtown Magazine held its Fall 2016 Cover Launch Party at the new Four Seasons Downtown Private Residences at 30 Park Place in Tribeca. Champagne and hors-d’oeuvres were served and guests had the luxury of enjoying the incredible interiors designed by Robert Couturier and stunning views of Lower Manhattan from the 78th Floor in one of the newly-finished penthouses.

With a long guest list, the who’s who of the downtown area joined Downtown in celebration of this very special issue of the magazine. As the undeniable architect of Lower Manhattan, the man on the new issue’s cover story, Larry Silverstein, was the event’s special guest.

In tribute to the aforementioned Larry Silverstein — a pillar in the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan — Downtown prepared two surprises for the evening’s special guest. After Mr. Silverstein had given a speech, Downtown CEO & Publisher Grace A. Capobianco thanked Mr. Silverstein with a heartfelt video by Director & Cinematographer Zurab Katamadze and Photographer Dimitri Mais with help from the Downtown team, featuring many of Mr. Silverstein’s closest friends and collaborators, both in real estate as well as in the downtown area.

 

Friends such as Bruce Ratner, Norman Sturner, and Leonard Boxer spoke to Silverstein’s character, while local community figures including Jessica Lappin, Gale Brewer, and Catherine McVay Hughes talked about the incredible role Silverstein has played in the revitalization of downtown. Within the video, his daughter Lisa Silverstein and her husband Tal Kerret noted how incredibly lucky they are to be a part of the Silverstein family and how both Larry and Klara Silverstein inspire them every single day. Son Roger Silverstein offered similarly-touching sentiments.

The second surprise from Downtown was in the form of music. When Ms. Capobianco first learned of Mr. Silverstein’s love of classical music, she knew exactly who to call. Her dear friend Gregory Harrington, Ireland’s most recognized violinist, who has played all over the world for celebrities heads of states and several times at Carnegie Hall. Most recently he played for Hillary Clinton.

 

 

Although it was Downtown honoring Mr. Silverstein, he spoke eloquently about Ms. Capobianco’s talent, passion and incredible job she’s done with launching Downtown Magazine almost 8 years ago. A much-needed vehicle for the new downtown.

“I never expected to have the opportunity of having a magazine as spectacular as the magazine we have with us tonight and the person who is remarkable, responsible for everything in that magazine because of the passion that she has for this magazine — the passion she has for everything that exists down here in Lower Manhattan, at the end of the day, we’re blessed to have the magazine and we are blessed to have her. Lo and behold I’m on the front cover, so how can I say anything negative about this magazine. The first time I came upon Grace Capobianco, I said to her ‘You’re a unique woman.’ Unique because whatever she did, she did it with such zest, with such drive, with such passion that I finally said to her “You know, I’ve never met another magazine publisher like you.” She said, “Well, how many have you met?” I replied “Well, you’re the only one that I’ve met,” said Mr. Silverstein as he and the crowd roared with laughter.

Classical Theater of Harlem is coming downtown to the 3LD Art & Technology Center for an Oct. 7 to 30 run

Fit For A Queen draft 14-min

The famed uptown theatre company, Classical Theater of Harlem, is coming downtown to present their newest production Fit for a Queen at the 3LD Art & Technology Center on 80 Greenwich Street. The engagement will run from Oct. 7th through 30th.

Fit for a Queen is a comedy inspired by the life of Hatshepsut, a woman who ruled as a pharaoh in ancient Egypt. Hatshepsut’s female lover helps her usurp the throne, only to find herself at odds with an unexpectedly ruthless rival for power — her daughter. Written by noted playwright Betty Shamieh, the clever and timely comedy delves into the world of women in politics and examines what it takes for a woman to rise up to the most powerful position in the land.

Shamieh, for her part, is the author of fifteen plays, and was recently awarded a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship in Drama and Performance Art. Her off-Broadway premieres are The Black Eyed (New York Theatre Workshop, Director: Sam Gold), and Roar (The New Group, Director: Marion McClinton).

With a timely opening just a few short weeks before the U.S. Presidential election, Fit For a Queen brings up questions we are still struggling with as a modern society, particularly as we watch Hillary Clinton grappling with the challenges of being the United States’ first female presidential candidate from a major party. Is it effective for a woman to use the tropes and mannerisms of masculinity to assert her right to power? Why have women like Hatshepsut been largely wiped out from our cultural memory? How might we, as men and women, have evolved differently if a story of a powerful, effective, cross-dressing female pharaoh was a part of our history lessons on ancient civilizations?

The Classical Theatre of Harlem tells stories as seen through the lens of the African diaspora and does work that honors the cultural legacy of the neighborhood in which it was founded, which should make for a take on an old legacy that is not only modern and diverse but rich with perspective.

Elie Hirschfeld East Hampton Home To Host Preview Party for The East Hampton Historical Society’s 2015 House & Garden Tour

The celebrated and storied East Hampton home of the renowned New York developer and philanthropist Elie Hirschfeld will play host to the Preview Party of the East Hampton Historical Society’s 2015 House & Garden Tour.

The magnificent 12,000 square-foot mansion on 200 feet of dazzling ocean front was chosen by former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State and current presidential candidate Hillary Clinton as their summer vacation home in 2011 and 2012.

“It is truly an honor for me that the Historical Society selected my home as the venue for such a meaningful event on the East End of Long Island,” said Hirschfeld.

The landmark home was originally designed and built in 1920 by celebrated architect John Custis Lawrence and boasts five fireplaces, eight bedrooms, 7.5 baths, two powder rooms, a large living salon, formal dining room, gourmet kitchen and a massive library. Hirschfeld noted that the former President did a fine job of reorganizing the library during his stay at the home.

“The President showed me how he reorganized the library not only by subjects but also by putting them in chronological order,” Hirschfeld said.

Hirschfeld, whose Manhattan projects include the Grand Sutton co-op and the Crowne Plaza hotel, bought the 12,000-square-foot oceanfront property in 1996.

“Manhattan is my home, but East Hampton will always hold a special place in my heart,” says the iconic New York figure who has become a prominent figure on the East End.

In June, the accomplished triathlete excelled in the Mighty Montauk Triathlon, the proceeds of which benefitted the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research , the St. Therese Youth Group , The East Hampton PBA and The Montauk Ambulance Squad.

The benefit Preview Party will run from 6 to 8 p.m. “Where Lily Pond Lane Meets Georgica Beach,” in the Hirschfeld home.

Tickets start at $200, which includes admission to the self-guided house and garden tour the following day. Tickets to the tour alone are priced at $65 in advance and $75 on the day of the event.
