Tennis Legends Face Off at Annual Johnny Mac Tennis Project Pro Am

On Saturday, Aug 26, star tennis players such as John McEnroe, Patrick McEnroe, Chris Evert and more take over to the Hamptons for the Johnny Mac Tennis Project Pro AM. And you, too, can play along.

“We have created an annual event with 128 players, which is the size of a Grand Slam draw — pretty incredible,” said John McEnroe.

Back for its third year, the Johnny Mac Tennis Project Pro AM allow amateurs to team up with the pros in some nerve-racking doubles matches. And for eight lucky amateurs, the event also includes an exclusive Benefactor Level, where there will be rounds to compete with and against the tennis stars.

The tennis matches will play out from 3 – 7 p.m. at SPORTIME Amagansett in East Hampton, and you can sign up and purchase your tickets right here. Following the matches, there will be an after party hosted by John McEnroe and friends for the players, guests and fans. This includes hors d’oeuvres, a buffet dinner, an open bar, live entertainment and dancing, and a live auction.

Mats Wilander, John McEnroe, James Blake

The event will once again raise funds to support young, aspiring tennis players.

“The Johnny Mac Tennis Project believes that tennis is a change agent and a sport of opportunity for kids,” said Executive Director of Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP), Ron Nano.

The program offers a wide range of help. From introductory programs provided to schools and community-based organizations, which focus on cultivating healthy lifestyles and self-discipline, to world-class tournament training for aspiring college scholarship recipients and professional athletes, the project’s initiative aims to be well-rounded and wants to support beginners as well as advanced players.

John McEnroe

This year the lineup reads two new tried-and-true tennis talents.

“We have added Chris Evert and Pat Cash to the group, joining my brother Patrick, me, and Mats, with more players to come. It is all about the mission — to bring tennis to New York City kids who could not otherwise get to play, and to make some great New York players,” said John McEnroe.

“This annual event is a unique and exciting opportunity in the Hamptons, right before the U.S. Open, to play or watch some great tennis, to see some Tennis Legends competing close-up, and to support a great cause,” added Patrick McEnroe, who also serves as President of JMPT’s Board of Directors.

“Most importantly, this event allows us to continue bringing tennis to kids and young adults who otherwise would not have access to the sport,” he said.

SWISH Beverages founders Josh Ostrovsky & David Oliver Cohen talk new “Family Time Is Hard” wine

imageedit_10_9298868037
SWISH Beverages, a company founded by Josh Ostrovsky and David Oliver Cohen, is notable on a few levels. First, it is a celebrity-founded company, as Josh and David are very well-known; between the two of them they have over 14 million followers of social media. Second, it is a fast-growing company, as SWISH’s new Pinot Grigio — known as “Family Time Is Hard” — is the company’s third wine offering. Third, well, these are very entertaining people that not only bring a sense of humor to wine, but also have brought quality-oriented wines to the marketplace.

Downtown had the pleasure of conducting Q&A with both Josh and David over e-mail, and both were hilarious as expected. While their love of The Olive Garden is most likely ironic, there is no denying that the two have no shortage of greatness ahead of them. Beyond the SWISH online store, Josh and David can both be followed via Twitter.

How did you two first meet?

David Oliver Cohen: we met in the West Village in a cute little park on Jane Street while we were walking our dogs. It was straight out of a Nancy Meyers film like You’ve Got Mail, or It’s Complicated, or Cape Fear.

Josh Ostrovsky: He was wearing a fleece and leather sandals and looked like a friendly…freelance writer. He didn’t pick up his dog’s poop and we watched a guy slip in it cartoon-style, like when someone slips on a banana peel. We laughed together. A friendship was born.

What was the name of your wine before Family Time Is Hard was chosen?

DOC: Honestly, the name came to us before we knew what kind of wine it would be. We had talked about doing a limited-edition holiday wine, but we didn’t know what varietal made the most sense. We all love Pinot Grigio, and our super cute Italian winemaker, Claudio uses a Pinot Grigio in our rosé blend so we decided to go with it.

JO: I wanted it to be called “My dad is a judgmental dick who wanted me to be a podiatrist but I wanted to follow my dreams IN YOUR FUCKING FACE DUDE I TOTALLY MADE IT, OH AND ALSO I EAT ICE CREAM FOR DINNER SOMETIMES BECAUSE I’M AN ADULT,” but that was too long, so we settled on “Family Time Is Hard.” Because it really is.

Were any members of your family offended by the name of your Pinot Grigio?

DOC: We haven’t spoken to anyone in our families in years.

Is it true that White Girl Rosé came about as a result of a rosé shortage in the Hamptons?

JO: That’s true. Two summers ago rose was running DANGEROUSLY LOW in the Hamptons. I capitalized those words to make it sounds even more dramatic than it was. People were running through the streets, trying to hoard every last drop they could get their hands on. We decided at that moment, that was would never allow such a tragedy to occur again. Not on our watch.

DOC: Not all heroes wear capes.

You now have three wines in stores. Do you have plans for additional varieties? A cabernet,
perhaps?

DOC: We definitely have our hands full at the moment with the Pinot Grigio, the rosé and the can of sparkling rosé. But we are always developing new things, so you never know where we’ll end up.

Where is your wine sourced from?

DOC: Our winery is located in central California. All the products are grown produced and bottled in one location.

JO: The new Gilmore Girls is honestly so good. The fear is obviously that after 10 years it will feel non-congruent, but it eased back into the narrative in a seamless way.

Have you always favored wine? Or is that something you grew into?

DOC: We let our massive audience tell us what they wanted. We have a huge following and we wanted to be able to give them a product that they’d be excited about beyond the books we have written and the social media we do. They wanted rosé.

JO: I was raised by two wealthy gay dads in a sun-drenched loft in SoHo in the ‘90’s, there was A LOT of wine. So yes, I’ve always been into it.

Wine aside, what is coming up for you?

DOC: The White Girl Problems movie, television appearances…

JO: I’m hosting a quinceañera next month…in Mexico City, which is basically all I’ve ever wanted.

Is the name of your wine’s parent company, SWISH, an abbreviation? Or a reference to something in particular?

JO: BOTH, AT THE SAME TIME: Nothing but net.

When not busy with work, how do you like to spend your free time?

DOC: We do a lot of antiquing. And I mean a lot.

JO: Mostly just dealing crippling anxiety. And antiquing!

Do you have a favorite restaurant in New York?

DOC: Probably, The Olive Garden on 22nd Street or the Olive Garden in Times Square.

JO: Probably Nobu — the black cod in Miso with its sweet/savory burnished crust, and flaky, buttery interior is a revelation…Just kidding, The Olive Garden on 22nd Street or the Olive Garden in Times Square.

Finally, any last words for the kids?

DOC: Rosé or die.

Christie Brinkley & Sailor Brinkley Cook talk to Downtown in the Hamptons

DSC_1684

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of attending the 5th Annual St. Barth Hamptons Gala, which celebrated the supermodel turned super-mogul, Christie Brinkley.

The festivities took place at the Bridgehampton Historical Museum with over 750 guests in attendance, including Christie Brinkley’s children, Sailor Brinkley-Cook and Jack Brinkley-Cook.

unspecified-1

Between her exclusive Hair2Wear line, her Authentic Skincare products, and her soon-to-be launched Organic Prosecco brand, this mother of three exemplifies the strong, independent and hardworking woman worthy of idolization.

I had a chance to chat with this global icon for Downtown, and the first thing I wanted to know was, “What do you wish more people knew about Christie Brinkley?”

She responded by gushing with excitement over her new line of Organic prosecco, titled Bellissima:

“[I want people to know] that I have a great prosecco coming out in August! I’m really excited about this, because if I’m lucky, my prosecco, Bellissima, is going to be apart of people’s happiest moments. They’ll reach for my Bellissima to toast baby’s being born, kids graduating from college, or just ‘hey, it’s Friday night and a friend’s coming over!’ It’s those good times, those happy times, those beautiful moments that we’ll [now] get to share with them in our own way and that’s very exciting to me. And we’re at a great price point too: $19.99! I mean, that’s reason to pop the cork and celebrate!”

This line of prosecco is unparalleled to anything you may have in your liquor cabinet. Why, you ask? The entire line is completely organic and vegan, made from all naturally-grown grapes found in Italy’s Treviso-Veneto region. Not to forget, the blue one is 100% sugar-free!

“I feel very, very proud of that. Because going organic is really good for our bodies and our planet,” Christie added.

Eating healthy has been a booming trend for years now, but finally thanks to Christie Brinkley, we have an outlet to drink healthy as well. This model and actress is not one to just simply stick her name on a product with complete disregard for its quality or affectivity. Rather, she works with sincerity to ensure we receive her promised outcome.

This is evident through the Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare Line:b863ca76-45c6-4aa8-95be-49042b11eed3 “I love the fact that my skincare is giving women the results that they’re looking for. And I hear all day long women say to me ‘Christie, thank you so much!’ I was really, really, really strict about it. Until I felt like we were giving women true results, I kept saying, ‘No, no, not good enough. I want more, more, more.’ And women are literally seeing the age fall off their face and they’re feeling better and more confident. That makes me really happy.”

Are you still skeptical? I’ll tell you why I’m not. I approached Christie’s daughter Sailor for a little impromptu Q&A, and from that I was able to glean a little more insight into just how genuine Christie and her products are.DSC_1745 Sailor welcomed the unscheduled interview with grace and excitement. She was extremely candid and sincere. We chatted briefly about her moms line of prosecco, and she too thought the organic and zero-sugar ideas were genius, as it allows people to go out and enjoy their night without waking up with dietary guilt the next morning.

However, Sailor’s authenticity fully shined through when I asked the aspiring model: “What is the best advice your mom has given you about the modeling industry?”

unspecified-2

To which Sailor answered: “To be you. I’ve been told by photographers [and make-up and hair artists] that they like how I make conversation with them and treat them like people. And that’s what my mom did that got her big in the industry. She treated everyone as a human and as an equal and just made working fun. And that’s what I aspire to do. I aspire to have a personality in the business.”

I asked Christie the same question. As her worldwide fame began to skyrocket in the late 1970s, Christie recalls the first time she started to meet major celebrity figures from the industry. “I remember meeting every celebrity I’ve ever met when I was first coming to New York City. [And] it’s a story that I’ll tell, so I want everybody that I meet to have a nice story. So that’s what I tell my kids. I say always be polite [and] make sure they have a nice story about them.”

After speaking with Sailor, the strong values her mother has instilled in her were clear. And those values have been recapitulated in all of the Brinkley products.
