Downtown’s 3rd Annual Barktoberfest is a Success!

BarkToberfest’s 2021’s first prize winner, Cruz the Frenchie, herewith (l-r) MC Michael Millette, Downtown Publisher Grace Capobianco, and sponsor, Poochi NYC’s Jason Zafarana.

Downtown Magazine’s 3rd annual BarkToberfest was a howling good time!

By switching our Halloween event one day later to Oct. 27, we prevented a nor’easter from dampening the festivities.  Hundreds came out on a picture-perfect Wednesday evening down at The Seaport by Pier 17, strutting their costumed pooches on the runway for the chance to win a variety of fantastic prizes. This year’s costume choices were creative and hilariousfrom tacos, a UPS worker, a bulldozer, an angel, a cannoli, circus animals, even a Moderna vaccine!

“BarkToberfest is our favorite event of the year because we get to hang out with the most adorable downtown pups, said Downtown’s Editor in Chief, Deb Martin. “The costumes this year were so creative, and it was wonderful to enjoy full-on fall weather down at The Seaport.”

“Watching all the wonderful loving dogs and owners, I am reminded of the quote:  “What a wonderful place the world would be if all people had the hearts of dogs,” said judge Kelly McGowan. ” Thanks to all the participants for bringing the world of dogs alive!!”

“Thank you for being a part of 2021’s BarkToberfest. Downtown is dog town. People here care about their companions and we are excited to be providing the best quality care for them,” said Jason Zafarana of Poochi NYC. “We look forward to BarkToberfest all year and celebrating with our community.”

“This was my third year working with Downtown on this event & I really missed it last pandemic year,” said judge Martin Kesselman. “Not only were the costumes well thought out, but they were also made and presented with love.  As a designer I enjoy connecting with my clients, spending time in their homes, as well as getting to know the pets that they adore. I really enjoyed the evening, celebrating with treats, laughing together, backdropped with barks.”

“BarkToberfest was so much fun! Love the spirit and all the pups. I wish I could be as creative. My poor pup Percy has worn the same store-bought costume every year! Great crowd, amazing participation, and perfect puppy behavior by all. Thanks for letting me be a judge. The MC nailed it!” said Cheryl Lefkovits, a friend and longtime supporter of Downtown.

“BarkToberfest was the event of the fall for downtown fur families! My cheeks were hurting from smiling so much! These pups were dressed to impress!” enthused judge Mary Wassner.

“It was a treat for the dogs, the owners, the spectators, and the judges!” said special guest Roel Hoekstra, who works with Rabobank in The Netherlands. “Many thanks to Downtown Magazine for again making this happen!”

Haunted Cocktail Soiree

Haunted Cocktail Soriee

It’s a spooky, haunted season, which means you don’t have to indulge too heavily at happy hour in order to start seeing things in the night. An immersive cocktail and haunting experience called House of Spirits is coming to Lower Manhattan.

The “haunted cocktail soiree” will mix the supernatural with magic and themed cocktails.

Step into a world of phantasmic refinement as you mingle with strange specters, witness secret ceremonies, commune with the spirits on a giant Ouija Board, and enjoy themed cocktails, magic, music, and more!

Experience the Hunted

Experience the haunting tale of Molly and Francisco Vega, a young couple who lost their baby during childbirth. The story is loosely based on the life and artwork of Spanish painter Francisco and his wife.

Francisco focuses his grief via art and begins a series of disturbing paintings, while Molly’s grief drives her to a much darker place. Loosely based on the life and artwork of famous Spanish painter Francisco Goya, House of Spirits, produced by Meyer2Meyer Entertainment and Fever, weaves an unnerving and interactive storyline certain to leave guests delightfully chilled.

Guests can freely roam the haunted mansion and interact with the haunting tale of Molly and Francisco Vega.

The event is held inside the Down Town Association, a landmarked private club building whose interior decor could easily stand in for a haunted mansion on a normal day.

Check Out The Cutest Dog Costumes in All of NYC

Photos by Eddy Garay

The Cutest Dog Costumes in All NYC, Ranked

Barktoberfest 2019 is over; everybody won. Well, we all got to see adorable dogs in great costumes, but only some of those dogs won prizes. Over the course of the evening, ten top dogs won nine prizes for their puppy parents. It was a tough competition, but it wasn’t because of the rain; our judges had to choose between more participants than ever before! More than 80 pups and 200 people showed up for Downtown’s biggest Barktoberfest event.

The Event

On October 29th, hundreds of pups and people descended on the Seaport at Pier 17 for Barktoberfest, a canine costume party celebration. The event was hosted by Downtown Magazine and POOCHI NYC. Downtown Magazine’s Pawblisher Barclay publishes his own column in the magazine. POOCHI NYC is a professional dog-walking service offering memberships to NYC Pawrents with pooches at home.

The event featured snacks, “BarkTinis,” and more, including snacks from Industry Kitchen, Grandaisy Bakery, and Insomnia Cookies.

Sponsors included: Downtown Magazine, POOCHI NYC, Seaport District NYC, Social Tees Animal Rescue, Four Seasons, SYNLawn, BARK, Frédéric Fekkai, WellPup, Worth Street Veterinary Center, Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams, Pet Plate, Tribeca Grill, Zoo Snoods, and Insomnia Cookies.

The Competition

A group of seven expert judges chose winners for 6 categories and three runners up, with prizes for all.

The Judges:

Saul Scherl Executive Vice President Howard Hughes Corp

“Elizabeth Velez Developer Velez Organization

Mimi Fisher Stylist

“Dr. DiPolo” Worth Street Vet

“Kiana Martinez Mitchel Gold Bob Williams

Christie Huus Christie Huus, Vice-Chair Seaport Museum

The Winners

We know this is why you’re really here: the puppy pictures. We don’t blame you.

Our Runners Pup:

Runners up received a one-year subscription to Downtown Magazine. For one year, they will able to learn about all of the cool stuff happening downtown, and their furry friends can learn about local doggie do’s with Barclay’s Spot.

Our first runner up was dressed as General Leia, our favorite Disney princess.

7th Place

Our 7th place winners were a tag-team, a pair of partners. These army pups won their owner a gift basket from Eatily.

6th Place

This went to a pair of owners, and one adorable infomercial of a pup. This chia pet won its owners a trip to the Fabio Doti Salon on Wall Street.

This pet really grew on our judges.

5th Place

This next pup was a Prime choice for 5th place. This Amazon Prime Pup won our hearts, as well as a Gift Certificate for Worth Street Veterinary Center.

This dog delivers joy to your heart in two days or less.

4th Place

This princely participant won his owner a hair makeover from Fredric Fekkai with David Cotteblanche.

3rd Place

Our third-place winner was also our “funniest costume.” It makes a lot of sense–this pup is a real joker. Pepper won himself a beautiful new dog bed from MGBW.

Joker Pup

2nd Place

Our second-place winner is also competing in another contest, a heated political bout that won this dog “Best Headline-of-the-Day” costume. Bernie Sanders himself came down to the competition, looking a little furrier than usual, to collect a dinner for four at the Tribeca Grill.

1st Prize

First prize went to a repeat pup. Last year’s winner (she was a fortune teller) returned as a grandma. If you think the costume is impressive, you should have seen her walk her walker on her hind legs. This walker-walking pup’s parent will walk away with an overnight stay at the Four Seasons.

Lauren Light Unleashes Dark New Single, “Run”

By Alice Teeple

Photos by Alice Teeple

The nights are longer and the veil is thinner between the mortal and spirit worlds as October winds down. North Carolina singer-songwriter Lauren Light has unleashed her terrifying new track, Run, just days before Halloween. This track is a treat.

Run proves itself to be a cinematic showstopper with rumbling drums, plodding synth undertones, and a frantic string riff to alert your senses. If you close your eyes, you can be treated to any number of threats: a gigantic T-Rex, perhaps? How about an army of screeching banshees? A Demogorgon? Buffalo Bill and Precious?

Lauren Light

Lauren Light’s hushed voice and sparse lyrics convey the urgency of a spirit that has appeared to warn you of danger. Her voice brings that ethereal quality of a David Lynch universe. Indeed, this song would be right at home being performed at the Twin Peaks Roadhouse, as if Light has appeared onstage as The Giant. This song is all Southern Gothic and a wonderfully eerie, cinematic highlight. It is time at last for Samhain.

This song is all Southern Gothic and a wonderfully eerie, cinematic highlight.

We’re past the point

Of no return

The river’s dry

The bridge is burned

They’re coming now

No place to hide

No place to go

We’re out of time

Don’t let them catch you

Run.

This particular song is an interesting diversion from Lauren Light’s usual storytelling pop-rock, but Run is tailor-made for horror films and spooky trailers. It is familiar in its message but uniquely crafted.

Light’s husky, powerful voice has been compared to Fiona Apple, Adele, and Katy Perry, but her style is a unique sound all its own. Her narrative style blends soul-rock and pop hooks. After gaining her Master’s from Berklee in the music business and songwriting, her career as a professional musician has taken her all over the map, gaining interest in the southeastern US as well as LA and NYC.

Get cozy under a blanket in the safety of your home. Light some candles, nuke some popcorn and enjoy. Run is available on all streaming platforms.
