Classical Theater of Harlem is coming downtown to the 3LD Art & Technology Center for an Oct. 7 to 30 run

Fit For A Queen draft 14-min

The famed uptown theatre company, Classical Theater of Harlem, is coming downtown to present their newest production Fit for a Queen at the 3LD Art & Technology Center on 80 Greenwich Street. The engagement will run from Oct. 7th through 30th.

Fit for a Queen is a comedy inspired by the life of Hatshepsut, a woman who ruled as a pharaoh in ancient Egypt. Hatshepsut’s female lover helps her usurp the throne, only to find herself at odds with an unexpectedly ruthless rival for power — her daughter. Written by noted playwright Betty Shamieh, the clever and timely comedy delves into the world of women in politics and examines what it takes for a woman to rise up to the most powerful position in the land.

Shamieh, for her part, is the author of fifteen plays, and was recently awarded a 2016 Guggenheim Fellowship in Drama and Performance Art. Her off-Broadway premieres are The Black Eyed (New York Theatre Workshop, Director: Sam Gold), and Roar (The New Group, Director: Marion McClinton).

With a timely opening just a few short weeks before the U.S. Presidential election, Fit For a Queen brings up questions we are still struggling with as a modern society, particularly as we watch Hillary Clinton grappling with the challenges of being the United States’ first female presidential candidate from a major party. Is it effective for a woman to use the tropes and mannerisms of masculinity to assert her right to power? Why have women like Hatshepsut been largely wiped out from our cultural memory? How might we, as men and women, have evolved differently if a story of a powerful, effective, cross-dressing female pharaoh was a part of our history lessons on ancient civilizations?

The Classical Theatre of Harlem tells stories as seen through the lens of the African diaspora and does work that honors the cultural legacy of the neighborhood in which it was founded, which should make for a take on an old legacy that is not only modern and diverse but rich with perspective.

Tickets can be purchased online via The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s website.

Coming To Tribeca: Belzer Restaurant

Manhattan is the heartland of food. With restaurants and stores lining the streets, it is nearly impossible to ignore all of the delicious options; and there will soon be a new addition in Tribeca.

Its name is Belzer (though the name is not definite). Restauranter, Matt Abramcyk, who already owns two downtown eateries, Smith + Mills and Tiny, will add Belzer to his list.

A Tribeca resident, Abramcyk will open his restaurant at 385 Greenwich St., where the restaurant Ivory Bistro once stood.

Abramcyk recently received a liquor license for the Belzer.

Menu offerings will include a ‘crispy gnocchi,’ ‘beef cheek ravioli’ and ‘fresh sardines on toast.’If the name will stay, expect Belzer to pop up at 385 Greenwich Street soon.

2nd Annual 9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk to be held in Lower Manhattan

91111

The 9/11 Memorial will be more than proud to host the second annual 5K Run/Walk and Family Day this Sunday, April 27th, to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks and support the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

This non-competitive run/walk will occur in lower Manhattan, beginning at 8 a.m. with the starting point at Pier 26 and the finish line near the entrance of the 9/11 Memorial, where the names of nearly 3,000 people who passed away in the attacks are engraved in bronze on the borders of the reflecting pools constructed where the Twin Towers once stood.

More than 2,000 participants will move along a 3.1 mile route surrounded by meaningful places that contribute to the story of 9/11, including spots like the Police Memorial in Battery Park City and “Point Thank You,” where crowds formed along West Street to cheer and thank recovery workers and rescuers as they made their way to and from Ground Zero. It will also recall how all New Yorkers came together to support one another in the aftermath of 9/11.

Registration for the 9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk closes on the 24th of April by midnight. Those who won’t be present in the City on the 27th but still wish to support and contribute can register as a Global Runner. As a Global Runner you can still partake in the run/walk memorial by walking or running from anywhere you are in the world.

In addition to the Run/Walk, Family Day will also be held the same day between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Greenwich Street between Liberty and Cortland Street. The free event will offer attendees entertainment food and refreshments and activities for all ages. No registration is necessary for Family Day. All proceeds from both of these events will support the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

For more information on both events and how to register, visit 911memorial.org
