The Cutest Dog Costumes in All NYC, Ranked

Barktoberfest 2019 is over; everybody won. Well, we all got to see adorable dogs in great costumes, but only some of those dogs won prizes. Over the course of the evening, ten top dogs won nine prizes for their puppy parents. It was a tough competition, but it wasn’t because of the rain; our judges had to choose between more participants than ever before! More than 80 pups and 200 people showed up for Downtown’s biggest Barktoberfest event.

The Event

On October 29th, hundreds of pups and people descended on the Seaport at Pier 17 for Barktoberfest, a canine costume party celebration. The event was hosted by Downtown Magazine and POOCHI NYC. Downtown Magazine’s Pawblisher Barclay publishes his own column in the magazine. POOCHI NYC is a professional dog-walking service offering memberships to NYC Pawrents with pooches at home.

The event featured snacks, “BarkTinis,” and more, including snacks from Industry Kitchen, Grandaisy Bakery, and Insomnia Cookies.

Sponsors included: Downtown Magazine, POOCHI NYC, Seaport District NYC, Social Tees Animal Rescue, Four Seasons, SYNLawn, BARK, Frédéric Fekkai, WellPup, Worth Street Veterinary Center, Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams, Pet Plate, Tribeca Grill, Zoo Snoods, and Insomnia Cookies.

The Competition

A group of seven expert judges chose winners for 6 categories and three runners up, with prizes for all.

The Winners

We know this is why you’re really here: the puppy pictures. We don’t blame you.

Our Runners Pup:

Runners up received a one-year subscription to Downtown Magazine. For one year, they will able to learn about all of the cool stuff happening downtown, and their furry friends can learn about local doggie do’s with Barclay’s Spot.

Our first runner up was dressed as General Leia, our favorite Disney princess.

7th Place

Our 7th place winners were a tag-team, a pair of partners. These army pups won their owner a gift basket from Eatily.

6th Place

This went to a pair of owners, and one adorable infomercial of a pup. This chia pet won its owners a trip to the Fabio Doti Salon on Wall Street.

This pet really grew on our judges.

5th Place

This next pup was a Prime choice for 5th place. This Amazon Prime Pup won our hearts, as well as a Gift Certificate for Worth Street Veterinary Center.

This dog delivers joy to your heart in two days or less.

4th Place

This princely participant won his owner a hair makeover from Fredric Fekkai with David Cotteblanche.

3rd Place

Our third-place winner was also our “funniest costume.” It makes a lot of sense–this pup is a real joker. Pepper won himself a beautiful new dog bed from MGBW.

2nd Place

Our second-place winner is also competing in another contest, a heated political bout that won this dog “Best Headline-of-the-Day” costume. Bernie Sanders himself came down to the competition, looking a little furrier than usual, to collect a dinner for four at the Tribeca Grill.

1st Prize

First prize went to a repeat pup. Last year’s winner (she was a fortune teller) returned as a grandma. If you think the costume is impressive, you should have seen her walk her walker on her hind legs. This walker-walking pup’s parent will walk away with an overnight stay at the Four Seasons.

On Friday, September 6th, bands took the stage as part of the 2019 World Trade Center Music Festival. Bands like Kid Le Chat, Blac RabbitGrekoMarc Scibilia, and Brooklyn’s Blake Charleton braved rain and wind to play for crowds of often-wet attendees. The event, put together by Downtown Magazine and WTC Silverstein Properties, honored first responders and Tuesday’s Children as well as the people and businesses who moved downtown following the September 11th tragedy.

“We heard about what Downtown Magazine (and Silverstein Properties) were doing, bringing these sort of cultural events and making more activities out of what’s typically a very corporate business environment,” says Blake Charleton Drummer Sam Berkowitz, “I work downtown as well. I work in one of the World Trade buildings. So it’s exciting to see all these creative and interactive events.”

Hundreds of people attended the event, including minor celebrity Hurricane Dorian, who traveled all the way from the Bahamas for the event. Unfortunately, some guests are better than others, and the rain from Dorian forced the show to end early. The show was short, but epic while it was going on. For those who unable to brave the rain this year, Downtown has brought some of the festival with us. Check out these pictures below, from the festival and a performance by artist Gus10 at the afterparty, and we’ll see you again next year. Don’t forget your raincoat.

Prosciutto di Parma with Downtown favorite Chef Raffaele Ronca

Chef Raffaele in action

Downtown Magazine stepped out to CEO Grace Capobianco’s absolute favorite restaurant in Downtown Manhattan, Ristorante Rafele, for their night of Prosciutto di Parma. The special menu for the evening had exquisite pairings armed with — you guessed it — Prosciutto di Parma.

Prosciutto di Parma is a rare delicacy produced in Parma, a city in Northern Italy, known for its prosciutto and cheese. The three-course menu even featured a prosciutto topped dessert. It was a night of delicious Neapolitan cuisine and Chef Raffaele’s take on his favorite aged pork.

The only ingredients used in production of Prosciutto di Parma are pork and sea salt. There are only 150 credited producing farms; the unique flavor is one that cannot be reproduced. The certification of the farm ensures that the animal is free range and lives an overall happy, healthy life. The sea breeze from the Adriatic Sea sweeps through the aging warehouses, creating an unrivaled flavor that becomes more sought after with longer aging times.

Spotify is moving downtown

Spotify — the world’s leading music streaming service — launched in Stockholm, Sweden in 2008. Founders Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon brought it to the United States in July 2011, and about a year there, Spotify had one million paying customers. Currently, Spotify has around 40 million paying subscribers and 100 million active monthly users.

This week, it was announced that Spotify is moving downtown into World Trade Center’s WTC4 building. “Spotify’s move to World Trade is another win for our unique environment,” said Downtown Magazine CEO Grace Capobianco. “Coming from Sweden, Lower Manhattan will certainly offer a work life quality like no other in New York. This new leasing is yet another success for the Silverstein organization, chair of our board.”

The New York City ties of Spotify also expanded earlier this month with the announcement of a partnership with the New York Times. The two companies are part of a joint subscription offering in which subscribers can opt into both NYT and Spotify subscriptions at a discount. This arrangement is comparable a partnership Spotify had launched with The Times Of London in 2014.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Spotify!

DOWNTOWN CEO and Publisher Grace A. Capobianco Featured on Fox 5 News

New York News

On Friday September 19th, CEO and Publisher of DOWNTOWN Magazine, Grace A. Capobianco, was featured on Fox 5 News with well-known television personality Ernie Anastos. On live television, Ms. Capobianco and Mr. Anastos discussed the issue of shopping addiction and how to break the impulse buying habit.

Ms. Capobianco acknowledged that while we all love shopping, there are ways to do it mindfully that yield better results and less guilt. Instead of purchasing the same types of things you always buy out of habit, do your research ahead of time using online resources and then head to the store with a goal in mind to see what you actually like. With this tactic, you are more likely to walk out of a store with something you know you’ll absolutely love and be less disappointed and ridden with guilt later on.

To represent her fabulous taste in fashion, Ms. Capobianco was wearing an outfit by American Designer Zac Posen and fabulous jewels by Barbara Novak.

The historic Roseland Ballroom closed it’s doors last Friday, but not before New York native Lady Gaga headlined the final shows over the past two weeks.

The “10-day Funeral,” as Gaga refers to it, kicked off the final leg of her limited residency at The Roseland Ballroom, and  hosting an after-party at nearby 42West in the OUT NYC Hotel. DOWNTOWN’s CEO and Publisher Grace Capobianco and PR luminary R. Couri Hay were on hand among a wide array of star-studded guests.

Guests were greeted by music provided by Gaga’s producer, DJ White Shadow and Steven Redant of Bent Collective, until Gaga jumped on stage while her chart-topping single “Do What U Want,” featuring R Kelly blasted from the sound system.

Looking energetic and hands locked with her boyfriend Taylor Kinney, Gaga arrived at 42West after a spectacular Ballroom performance in a black leotard, fishnet stockings, and her signature high heels.
