1. Multi-Arts LGBTQ Fest

The Fresh Fruit Festival is a celebration of LGBTQ art and culture. The multidisciplinary arts festival will feature performance art, dance, theatre, video, film, spoken word, graphic arts and music. The goal of the festival is to fight intolerance by showcasing the various aspects of the LGBTQ experience from emerging and established artists. Tickets start at $18.   

 

2. Water Day

Saturday, Jul. 16 from 10am-4pm

New York has so many waterfront activities that are waiting to be discovered. This Saturday hit up Hoboken’s Maxwell Place Park, Governors Island or one of a dozen other neighborhood locations for a day of free waterfront fun! Activities include kayaking, canoeing, rowing and paddling. There will be boat tours, food, music and plenty of hands-on water fun for the kiddies. FREE

 

3. Weekend Pool Party
James Hotel (SoHo)
Saturdays-Sundays at 3pm

No need to drop big dolla’ bills to enjoy New York’s fabulous rooftop pools. Every weekend the James Hotel hosts JIMMY Summer Pool Parties, where at 3pm the rooftop bar and lounge opens to guests and the public. Take in the views, enjoy a drink and take a dip, of course. FREE

 

4. Beer Battle: NY vs NJ
The Greene Space (South Village)
Wednesday, Jul. 13 at 7pm

So you think you can tell the difference between NY and NJ? Here’s your chance to prove it. These arch frenemies, always in competition, will battle it out to determine who makes the best beer. Spectators at this epic smackdown will blind taste craft beers from “brewers on both sides of the Hudson River and vote on who makes the best brew.” Tickets start at $25 and include beer tasting and light snacks.

 

5. Meet Chuck Palahniuk
Strand (East Village)
Friday, Jul. 15 from 3-10:30pm

Chuck Palahniuk’s new graphic novel, Fight Club 2,  picks up the story of Tyler Durden, a decade after Project Mayhem. Get the book and meet the author at Strand Books. FREE

For fire, sparks and glitter before the fireworks, check out Doc Wasabassco’s monthly Burlesque show at City Winery. The Pre-Fireworks​ 4th of July Celebration promises a patriotic “night of tease, spectacle, and couple-friendly risqué fun.” Tickets start at $22.

 

2. New French Bistro

We are using French Restaurant Week as an excuse to check out Mimi NYC, a new French bistro in Greenwich Village. The mouthwatering menu includes innovative renditions of standards like Pâté en Croûte, Cured Sea Trout, and Veal Oscar.

 

3. 4Knots Music Festival
South Street Seaport (South Street Seaport)
Saturday, Jul. 11 from 1-10pm

The beloved Village Voice indie rock festival 4 Knots is better than ever! Headlined by American indie rock band Guided by Voices, and the Canadian band The Strumbellas, this year the festival is free! The Lower East Side Film Festival showcases low-budget and independent films from across the globe, but this affair is far from low-profile. Ethan Hawke joins the panel of jurors and there is always a slew of killer parties! Don’t miss the opening night film “Art of the Prank” and, more importantly, the after-party at DROM where $20 cover includes live bands and an open bar with beer and wine.

2. Daybreaker Weeklong Party

3. Loving Day

Virginia, the 1967 Supreme Court decision that declared all laws against interracial marriage unconstitutional, Loving Day is a celebration of diversity and multiculturalism. 4. Big Apple Barbecue

5. LGBT Chelsea Art Gallery Tour

See great art and mingle! This lively tour will highlight the latest artwork by gay and lesbian artists, as well as “others of interest to a queer sensibility,” including work from painter and printmaker David Hockney and a special talk from photographer Karine Laval. $25

6. Washington Square Music Festival

Tuesday, Jun. 7 – Tuesday, Jun. 28 at 8pm

Jun. 7 marks the start of a month-long classical concert series at Washington Square Park. We can’t imagine a lovelier Tuesday evening than in the company of Vivaldi, Brahms and Nielsen, al fresco.

2. World Science Festival

Have your mind blown at the World Science Festival! No need for a science degree to enjoy the wide range of topics and events, among them talks on the science of baking and robot morality, fishing trips, street science and stargazing. This year, The Month joins the ranks for a night of science stories. Top on our list of events to attend is “Awakening the Mind,” a special tribute to Dr. Oliver Sacks.
3. Participatory Art
Governors Island

The Figment Project is the sort of installation art exhibit that invites attendees to interact — touch, play and dream — with the art on display. Volunteer-based with no corporate backing, Figment is the embodiment of art for the people. Expect theater, dance, music, and lots of opportunities to make your own art!

4. Lobster and Beer Sail

We are so excited about the new Lobster & Beer Lovers Sail that we are including it in our look ahead section. 5. Hot Wings Festival

Taste over 50 wing varieties, from classic flavors to unique concoctions, at the 2nd annual Best Wings Festival.  This finger-licking, family-friendly event is jammed packed with activities, entertainment, competitions and giveaways. Plus, there will be plenty of craft beer to help you wash down all those wings. Tickets start at $10.

6. Mr. Purple Rooftop Bar

We waited for warmer weather to check out Mr. Purple, a new-ish rooftop bar at the Indigo Hotel. Perched on the 15th floor, Mr. Purple is trying hard to impress, but we think the food and drink menu, plus the sweeping views of the city, speak for themselves. Stop by for a midweek drink if you want to avoid the weekend crowds.

We love the NYC Pop Fest because we can check out cool indie pop artists from around the world. These year’s lineup includes Allo Darlin’, Alpaca Sports, Big Quiet, Even As We Speak, Trashcan Sinatras, The Hairs, Simon Love and many more.

2. River Games

Forget the gym! Get summer ready at Hudson River Park. Part fundraiser, part olympics, the Hudson River Park Games are a series of individual and group fitness activities that are both challenging and fun. There is will be flying trapeze clinics,  paddleboard, yoga, soccer and more.

3. Taste of Tribeca

Over 60 of the finest Tribeca establishments like The Odeon, Nobu, Marc Forgione, Duane Park Patisserie, Tribeca Grill, White Street, Baked, Café Noir, Bouley and Brushstroke (both Michelin star recipients) will be offering tastings from their menus. Included in the ticket price are the self-guided wine and beer tours where local pubs and wines shops will offer special samplings. Rain or shine, there will be live entertainment, kid and sports areas, so bring the whole family.

Taiwan is one of the most magical places in the world. For those that can’t make the trip this year, we recommend checking out the 15th Annual Passport to Taiwan Festival. It showcases Taiwanese culture with food delicacies like Lobaben, Stir Fry Rice Vermicelli and Bamboo Tamale, demonstration from Taiwanese craft masters at work and performances from MAD Theater and the very awesome Dwagie.

6. Dance Parade

According to Martha Graham, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” That means you can let your soul speak at the annual Dance Parade and Dance Fest. Join the procession and salsa, tango, waltz, hula and break dance your soul to a wide range of world beats and sounds! Then, hit the after-party in Tompkins Square Park [15] for dance workshops and dance performances.

7.  Pop Culture Fest

The Vulture Festival celebrates entertainment and pop culture. Though some popular events are sold out, there is the opportunity to get standby tickets the day of the show (concerts, live tapings, premiere, screenings, podcasts, etc.) to see the likes of David Schwimmer, David Chase, Shonda Rhimes, Sarah Silverman and many more.

Smart-asses get a lot of flack and, you know what, we are here to defend those that through sheer cognitive gifts and random bathroom reading have come to amass a reserve of useless knowledge. So what if smartasses like to show off their little trove of trivia treasures! Forget the haters, and come check out Trivial Dispute at Crocodile Lounge, where smartasses (ourselves amongst them) can proudly boast and be rewarded.

5. Oscar party

The Oscars are all about style and glamour. We may not be movie stars, but that’s no reason to stay home in pajamas. We are going all out for the 88th edition with a fancy Oscars-themed dinner at Sons of Essex, with music from Francisco Lozano and entertainment by Annie Sollange. Prix Fixe menu $68. RSVP and formal attire strongly suggested.

6. Get it Together

Sometimes the cold, the gloom and the dark of winter can get us low, real low, and we may need something or someone to pull us up and tell us to get our shit together! We’re going to learn some practical ways of staying focused this winter.
