2. The Things They Carried

As the debate — or assault — on immigration rages on, State Of Exception/Estado De Excepción, an exhibition by artists Richard Barnes and Amanda Krugliak, in collaboration with anthropologist De León, puts viewers on intimate terms with the personal effects of men and women who’ve risked (and in some cases lost) their lives to cross dangerous terrain to reach the U.S. On display are backpacks, clothing, small keepsakes, interviews, recordings, video installation and documents that help paint a detailed picture of the ordeal migrants face in seeking a better future. 3. Wine 101

Wine knowledge is not all ostentatious swirling and sniffing and sugary descriptions… For those that want to get their foot in the “wine” door, Elements of Wine is great start. This 2 hour class with Andrew Fisher, President of Astor Wines & Spirits for over 30 years, will introduce participants to the basics of enjoying, identifying and pairing wine, in layman’s terms. $79 included wine samplings and light bites.

4. Sweet Spot: SoHo

Looking for a sweet adventure that allows you to explore a neighborhood, its nooks and crannies, and its sweet shops? 5. Circus and Culinary Feast

Part circus and part culinary celebration, Cuisine & Confessions, from by Montreal circus company Les 7 Doigts de la Main, is an unusual theatrical performance that combines acrobatics and everyday kitchen items to explore memories tied to our first tastes… The show is an intimate and sensual exploration of how food defines and shape our most important experiences. 6. Easter Brunch
La Pecora Bianca (Flatiron)

The setting is casual, but this Italian Easter brunch is definitely decadent. Choose from savory toasts (avocado, salmon or prosciutto cotto with fontina) or lavish salads like the Toscano, made with kale, roasted squash and ricotta, before moving on to the rich selection of main courses, that range from pastas, meatballs to steak and eggs and french toast. Make sure to save room for dessert. $40 — add $20 for an hour of unlimited pours of bellini or bloody mary.

7. Spring Bonnets

The Easter and Bonnet Festival is as good excuse as any to get a new spring hat. Head to East Village Hats — formerly Barbara Feinman’s East Village Millinery — where all hats are handmade, “expressing our distinct traditional style,” and guaranteed to turn heads.

Whitney Biennial

“To gauge the state of art in America today,” and to some degree America’s political and social landscape, look no further than the Whitney Biennial, the first at the museum’s new space. Though there are fewer artists, the quality of the work is notable especially from artists Dana Schutz, Jo Baer, Samara Golden, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer, Rafa Esparza, Henry Taylor, Sky Hopinka, Asad Raza, Jordan Wolfson and many more. 3. New Retro Restaurant Bar

Flower Shop, the new 3,000 square foot bi-level restaurant/lounge is basically a 1970s adult playground. Then, head downstairs, to the party den, to play a game of pool, browse the jukebox tunes, stare aimlessly at the fish tank or sit back with with the Pirate Rose cocktail by the funky, pink fireplace.

A line speaks of borders, directions and roads. The American Line is an exhibition that “interrogates our many understandings of the line.” On displays are paintings, photographs, sculptures and installations by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Liz Larner, Sol LeWitt, Paul McCarthy, Richard Prince, Fred Sandback, Lawrence Weiner, Christopher Wool and Sue Williams. 7. Conveyer-Belt Sushi Chain in NYC

By sober we don’t mean, serious, sensible, and solemn, Sober St. Patrick’s Day reclaims “the true spirit of the day” by celebrating Irish culture with music, dance, storytelling and live performances from a wide range of Irish masters. Swimming Pool: An American Story

This Is Not A Theater Company presents an interactive show that explores the role of the swimming pool in American culture. Audiences are invited to literally sit down at the pool’s edge, dip their feet in the blue waters and watch “synchronized swimming, a snarky fish, and an explorer in an inflatable boat” tell the unusual story of this most artificial body of water. $30.

3. Collective Chanting

Rubin Museum Of Art (Chelsea)

The “Om Lab” at the Rubin Museum is a participatory exhibit that’s recording thousands of voices as they chant the sacred sound of ‘Om’ (meant to encompass the sound of all the universe according to yogic tradition) for its forthcoming exhibition “The World Is Sound.” Stop by and offer your voice to “the world’s largest collective chant of OM.” Tickets start at $10.

The Kinky Film Festival, now in its 14th year, asks viewers to explore the “wide diversity of sexuality” and desire.
