Exquisite Holiday Wine Gifts from E. Guigal & Juve & Camps

Since it was first made in 1972, Gran Juvé has always been an emblematic Cava, representing the best of Juvé & Camps. Categorized as “Brut” with just 5g/l of dosage, it is only produced in exceptional vintages and is made using the best quality grapes from select vineyard plots. Aged in the bottle for about 42 months, it showcases the intensity and complexity that Cava can achieve. Hints of white flowers and stone fruit are followed by notes of a long-aged cava: brioche, toasted flavors, spices, and honey. Chardonnay contributes to the creamy mouthfeel and the Xarel.lo to the elegance and long finish. Exquisitely balanced, this dry cava is expressive, intense, complex, and fresh, a harmony of endless sensations.

Juvé & Camps Reserva de la Familia Gran Reserva 2017

A winegrowing family for over 200 years, Juvé first started producing sparkling wines under their name in 1921. This family-owned, 100% estate-based producer is revered in Spain for its painstaking focus on quality and sustainability.“Reserva de la Familia” (translating to ‘Reserve of the Family’) is the leading Gran Reserva in the world, always vintage-dated, and all the more notable because of the quality needed to produce it without dosage (‘Brut Nature’ designation). Deep, intense and elegant, initially evokes notes of ripe white fruits followed by hints of fennel, toast, and citrus to complete its distinguished aroma. Its creamy mousse is perfectly integrated in the palate, making its texture in the mouth simultaneously fresh, rounded, and evocative.

Tea Forte’s Warming Joy Collection

Tea is our office staple. Some love their coffee, for Downtown we prefer tea. A much more relaxing way to wake up or unwind. It’s more of an experience, a ritual, far more than just brewing. Many prepare just the perfect cup of tea individually, for some it’s the rich cream and the perfect amount of raw sugar first then the pour-in Tea Forte’s steeped tea. While others go all-natural, with lemon, and honey, regardless of your process, be sure to ask for Tea Forte this holiday season, or this could be added to your very own list!

This holiday season, be sure to open the lid to reveal a tea menu and a collection of 20 pyramid infusers in five blends, including Raspberry Ganache, Harvest Apple Spice, Winter Chai, Rum Raisin Biscotti, Spiced Ginger Plum, or our Publisher’s favorite the classics, like English Breakfast, Earl Gray, or Estate Darjeeling.

The Scrumptious Side Sleeper Pillow

Every person is unique, we each sleep in different positions. Are you a side or back sleeper? Have you heard that traditional rectangular pillows aren’t designed to support our neck and shoulders perfectly no matter what position we happen to sleep in? We’ve heard this from both our physical therapist and medical doctors, there is more and more research about having the best pillow to match your body. This unique curve from the side sleeper pillow by Honeydew does just that, it supports your neck and shoulders whether you are on your side or your back and offers proper neck alignment and support. Give yourself the gift of healthy sleep, or if you are feeling generous, get one for the entire family!

All Body by Honeydew Pillow

Are you like most people, rolling up a towel, or placing an extra pillow between your knees? Sleeping with a pillow between your knees dramatically improves spinal alignment and promotes sleeping on your side, which helps to lessen tossing and turning throughout the night and significantly improves breathing. This can greatly reduce or even eliminate snoring, and also provides tremendous relief for those who suffer from sleep apnea. Also, hugging has been found to release oxytocin and serotonin in your body. Simply put, snuggling up with a body pillow at night can lower your heart rate and reduce stress levels. This promotes a sense of comfort and peace that will improve the quality of sleep.

Have you ever wanted to remove some stuffing from your pillow? Honeydew’s fill is the most important part of your new pillow. It literally took years of prototypes and testing before they found that oh-so-perfect blend of materials, in just the right ratio, allowing for the perfect combination of support and softness. All Honeydew pillows have a discreetly hidden zipper that lets you add or remove fill to make sure your new pillow is the perfect height for your body.

Wagz Freedom Smart Dog Collar

This no-shock system uses sound and vibration instead, to redirect your dog, and also provides daily health insights. Knows your dog’s location using real-time GPS tracking. Use the collar together with the Wagz app.

Hydrating hair care essentials are all bundled up in a neoprene pouch, perfect for anyone on your list.

Now, don’t think that this scrumptious Bali Body tanning oil is for eating because it smells just like watermelon. But you can achieve a deep natural tan with this hydrating, natural oil. It’s one of the best we have ever tried. Enriched with watermelon seed extract to naturally enhance melanin while leaving you smelling fruity fresh. Say hello to the ultimate summer essential!

Simply one of Downtown’s favorite brands. Try this lovely Bali Body self-tanning kit. This brand never uses drying and damaging sulfates, phthalates or parabens, (unlike 98.9% of beauty products!). New York’s Generosity COVID19

We wanted to take the time to share some of the many who have displayed generosity and kindness during this pandemic. From celebrity hairstylists Patrick Kyle, Iron Chef Marc Forgione, Elisabeth Holder of Laudrèe USA, Harry’s Italian, and Da Claudio Restaurant, to Howard Hughes Seaport. You will read their words and see their photos as we salute their selfless acts.

Last Thursday was a day Patrick Kyle will never forget.

My buddy, Jordan @jordanehni (Infectious Disease Director @mountsinai_bethisrael ) was looking for barbers and hairstylists to volunteer to give health care workers much-needed haircuts. After discussing protective measures, I agreed to participate. Over 400 people entered a raffle for the cuts. Six were chosen to meet me in the “Wellness Room” for haircuts. I had full PPE (scrubs, mask, gloves and face shield). Clients were given a fresh mask and robe as they walked into the room. I felt completely safe. The love and appreciation I received will stay with me forever. Little did they know I felt normal for the first time in weeks getting to do something I love — servicing my clients

Celebrity hairstylist Patrick Kyle @patrickkyle_ generously donated six haircuts to front line employees at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Patrick is a freelance hairstylist whose credits include Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, and New York Fashion Week.

Employees entered a raffle, and six lucky winners received a haircut and styling, snacks, music, and aromatherapy treatment as a part of a larger wellness plan to help keep COVID-19 frontline workers rejuvenated for the long journey ahead. We are all missing access to basic services, and we are grateful to Patrick for volunteering his time and truly connecting with our healthcare heroes.

Winners: Millie Rosario, emergency department tech; Dr. Arielle Sasson, first-year resident; Marco Makkar, emergency department registrar; Dr. Anthoney Lim, medical director of the pediatrics ER. #selfcare #frontlines #COVID19 #msbibettertogether #wellnesswednesday

When New York City shut down, brothers Frank and Salvatore Buglione decided with their co-owners at the restaurant group HPH NYC  –

‘WE JUST PULL UP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND DROP OFF FOOD’: WHY HARRY’S ITALIAN DECIDED TO STAY OPEN

to keep both their Harry’s Italian locations open. “You always hate to see any restaurant go completely dark,” HPH partner Paul Lamas told the Downtown Alliance. “We wanted to try and keep some of our key employees, key staff working. Everybody wanted to work. We really wanted to do something to help the community.”

Beyond their neighborhood regulars, HPH and the Bugliones identified plenty of other mouths to feed in Manhattan. They tapped a number of their food purveyors and liquor vendors to see who’d be willing to chip in — the restaurant would match any donation — to serve first responders (e.g. NYPD’s 1st Precinct, Engine 4 and Ladder 15 on South Street, NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital). “We’re not here looking to make money or make this any publicity stunt,” Salvatore told the Alliance. “We do our best work when people are not looking. We just keep dropping off food — we don’t even ask any questions. We just pull up to the emergency room and drop off food.

I always feel we do the easy part,” Salvatore added. “Okay, we’re dropping off some food. It’s more about what these hospital workers are going through. They’re dealing with patients every day.”

The Bugliones work 18- and 19-hour days to do what they’re doing. At around 7 or 8 each morning, they turn on the ovens and wait for the orders to come in. Before they know it, Salvatore said, “we turn around and it’s 11 o’clock at night.” They’re not even tired, he said. “It’s unbelievable: You don’t realize 15 hours went by and you’re still strong.”

Lower Manhattan property owners came together on the evening of March 19, 2020, to offer a symbol of hope and strength in the midst of the global health and financial crisis.

One World Trade Center, Pier 17 at the Seaport District, Brookfield Place, 111 and 115 Broadway, 55 Water Street and 20 Exchange Place will be participating in this effort, while other Downtown buildings are working to join them over the next several days. Buildings throughout the entire city are encouraged to follow suit and add their own “lights of hope.”

“This is a moment to band together, show pride in a tough time, and light up the Lower Manhattan skyline with hope,” said Jessica Lappin, President of the Alliance for Downtown New York.  “Whether it’s red, white and blue or with a single white beacon, buildings across Lower Manhattan will light themselves in honor of our determination to endure and recover.”

“In this time of need, we as New Yorkers and Americans are looking for symbols of hope—both in our communities and across the country,” said Saul Scherl, President of the New York Tri-State Region of The Howard Hughes Corporation. “We wanted to unite our community and light up the buildings of Lower Manhattan together to show our solidarity, our resiliency, and our persistent hope for the future.”

Stay tuned for more generosity from New Yorkers taking the time to give back during this unprecedented time.

THE BEST LUXURY WATCH TO GIFT THIS HOLIDAY

When deciding what to give your loved ones this Christmas, think about the excitement they will have as they unwrap the gift. Think about seeing their sheer delight and gratitude because you did your homework and chose that oh-so-special gift.

This year will be one that they will remember for years to come. Of course, you can give the most tending tie, shirt, golf clubs, or even a sports jacket, but will they remember and show it off each time they use it? The best gifts are the ones that stay with us for life, and ones that we cherish every time we use it.

We have heard the calls for help, so we went above and beyond to help you find that truly memorable gift for each of your loved ones.

THE BEST LUXURY WATCH TO GIFT THIS HOLIDAY

We chose the historical Eberhard & Co. watches because they boast over a 130 years of research and passion. Since 1887 the Swiss brand has been synonymous with excellence and innovation, which are represented in precious timepieces with high technical content that have marked important stages: the pocket chronograph, the first wrist chronograph, right up to dual time watches.

Creations that stand out for their quality and style and that express the values of great Swiss tradition.

For this year give the gift with history and a lifetime of enjoyment, from Georges-Lucien Eberhard.

THE BEST LUXURY WATCH TO GIFT THIS HOLIDAY

The 1887 Remontage Manuel comes in a 41.80 mm x 9.60 mm stainless steel case with a slim bezel to leave ample space to the elegant dial.

This is available in two variations: gold or rhodium-plated numbers and indices. The “clou de Paris” decoration and the trapezoidal date window, which has already been adopted by Eberhard & Co. for some historical models, add a retro touch to this model. The logo on the dial is part of the historical heritage and is documented in the archives of the early 1900s. The dial is completed by rhodium-plated or golden Roman numerals, rhomboidal indices, and Dauphine hands. The central second’s hand stands out for its blue color.

THE BEST LUXURY WATCH TO GIFT THIS HOLIDAY

Entirely and exclusively produced for Eberhard in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the new Calibre EB140 is visible through the transparent sapphire crystal case-back revealing its beautiful finishes. The bridge for the balance wheel and the large bridge for the gear trains are decorated with a “circular wave” pattern. The screws are blued and the incisions are gilded. Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), this movement offers a 40-hour power reserve.

In addition to the traditional alligator leather strap, the new model can be matched to a Jacquard silk strap, in two different versions combined with the two dials, produced exclusively for Eberhard by the Ulturale tie-maker, one of the best-known ambassadors of this historic Neapolitan sartorial tradition.

Water-resistant to 30 meters / 100 feet, the Eberhard 1887 Remontage Manuel Ref. 21028 has a price of Swiss Francs 3,640 with the silk strap or Swiss Francs 3,720 with the alligator leather strap.

Day 12 Of The 12 Days Of Christmas

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…12 Drummers Drumming, Eleven pipers piping, Ten Lords-a-Leaping, Nine Ladies Dancing, Eight Maids-a-Milking, Seven Swans-a-Swimming, Six Geese-a-laying, Five Golden Rings, Four Calling Birds, Three French Hens, Two Turtle Doves and A Partridge in a Pear Tree.

We all search for that “oh so perfect” gift, stressing over whether or not they’ll like it, spending countless hours and dollars trying to show how much you love them.

Holiday season is a time of giving, giving to and of yourself. Maybe we can’t give you 12 drummers drumming on day 12 of the 12 days of Christmas, but we can all give a far greater gift… one we already possess. No need to run around searching every shop or website for that one perfect gift. You know, the one you think says it all….

As you gather this holiday season with those you love and choose to spend time with, give them the greatest give of all…your undivided attention. Ignore the device, put down the remote, close that book and give them you.

Have a wonderful conversation with one another, communicate, hug, laugh and love, that’s all we really want. Make a point this Christmas season, whether with family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers, to give the gift of you.

Downtown has come up with a few simple ways for you to give the gift of attention this holiday season:

Give of your time: Ask people what you can do to help. It could be something they’ve been struggling with, or maybe just help with some chores. You may not think it’s important, but to them it may be the one thing they need, but feel uncomfortable asking for.

Truly pay attention: Listen and respond with interest. Focus solely on them, look at them like you’ve never seen them before. Ask a lot of questions, engage them in a good, solid conversation.

Put all the devices down and turn off the TV: Put aside time to make and accept calls when you’re not with family and friends. The greatest advantage of TV nowadays is the ability to watch any program, game or movie at our leisure. Don’t let calls, texts and TV take away the quality time you should be spending with those you love.

Include the children and pets: Show them that family and friends mean more than any outside influence.

Be grateful: Many people do not have family or friends to spend the holidays with… they may be estranged from those who mean the most to them.

Help someone who really needs it: It doesn’t have to be financial help — it can be a simple gesture, a kind word, or an invitation.

Volunteer: There are so many opportunities to give of yourself and of your family and friends. Make a new annual tradition this year before you celebrate… volunteer!

On day 12 of the 12 days of Christmas, Downtown wishes you the most joyous, safest and happiest of holidays, and we thank you for taking the time to read our content, pick up our magazine and support our brand!

Merry Christmas!

Day 1 Of The 12 Days Of Christmas

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… a partridge in a pear tree.

Or in this case, we’ve chosen two or our favorite gifts by designer Minnie Rose for the first of the 12 days of Christmas. Founded in 2005, Minnie Rose delivers luxurious cashmere and knitwear designed by fashion insider Lisa Shaller-Goldberg, the driving force behind iconic 90s and 2000s brands Juicy Couture, Camp Beverly Hills, Ugg Australia, True Religion, and Hard Candy. Minnie Rose is named as a tribute to Lisa’s wild-spirited grandmothers, a perpetual source of love, comfort, and support.

Celebrity fans include the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, Selma Blair, Jennifer Garner, Eva Longoria, Giuliana Rancic, Alessandra Ambrosio, Lisa Rinna, January Jones, Oprah Winfrey, Vanessa Hudgens and Christie Brinkley. Minnie Rose’s collection is available at high-profile specialty boutiques such as Planet Blue, Neiman Marcus, Elyse Walker, Stanley Korshak, Shopbop, and Minnie Rose. This luxurious collection will range from $84 – $450.

On the first day of Christmas, if you wake up to this stunning cropped cardigan with fur collar, we’re sure it will delight all your senses. There’s nothing quite like the soft touch of cashmere on your skin. It’s hard to imagine that the impossibly soft material could ever keep you warm, but this elegant cardigan does just that. Choose from vibrant colors such as Varsity Blue, Cardinal, White or more, for this dyed-to-match Fur Cardi.

Coziness On Point

There are lots of ways to achieve the perfect balance of coziness; you could wear your partner’s oversized winter socks, snuggle up in your favorite adult onesie, or relax by the fireplace in these Gucci-inspired horse bit and fur pom pom slippers by Minnie Rose. Yes, ladies… it’s time to throw away your stretched-out old slippers, and sink your feet into graceful and stylish ones instead.

Originally from Long Island, Jean Shafiroff is a philanthropist, author and socialite who splits time between Manhattan and Southampton. She currently serves on the board of seven non-profit organizations, including the NYC Mission Society. In turn, it is not surprising that New York Magazine featured her in its “Who Runs New York?” article, while Gotham Magazine included Jean as one of its “100 Most Powerful New Yorkers.” With an M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and a B.S. in physical therapy from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, Jean’s strong educational background is also of note.

Earlier this year, Jean’s Successful Philanthropy: How To Make A Life By What You Give was released via Hatherleigh Press. Featuring an intro by Georgina Bloomberg, the book is available in both digital and hardcover formats. A unique guide to philanthrophy, Jean’s book both explains the philosophy behind philanthrophy and how a person can become a fulfilled philanthropist. In support of Successful Philanthrophy, she is currently very active on the speaking circuit, set to appear as the keynote speaker at the National Association of Professional Women’s event on Oct. 26 and as part of a New York Junior League event on Dec. 13.

Jean can be visited online at www.jeanshafiroff.com. She can also be followed via Twitter and Facebook.

What inspired you to write this book? Did a publisher approach you?

Jean Shafiroff: I was given a contract by a publisher a number of years ago, but because of my philanthropic obligations, I did not have the time to write the book. In early 2015 my time freed up and I sent the publisher an outline. They approved the outline and then a contract was signed. That year I sat down and wrote the book. Writing a book is a huge project.

How did you meet Georgina Bloomberg? Where did the idea come from to have her to write the book’s introduction?

JS: Georgina Bloomberg and I met in 2014 when we honored her at the Southampton Animal Shelter Gala in July of that year. I was the chair of the even and because of this she and I became friendly; I have chaired this event for the past 5 years.

Georgina and I are on the Honorary Board of the Shelter together. She and I both love animals. In August 2014 we were also both honorees at the Pet Philanthropy Gala in Water Mill. Georgina is a bright young philanthropist. She represents the millennials. She was perfect for the introduction.

In the book you mention being inspired to get into the world of philanthropy after working within the medical field and within finance. Was there a specific person that inspired you?

JS: A number of people influenced me. My father was a teacher who truly cared about his students. The nuns at the schools I attended taught the importance of taking care of those in need. Mother Theresa, for the work she did, was a great inspiration. My travels deep into places like Cambodia, Columbia, Nicaragua, China and Costa Rica gave me a firsthand view of those who live in enormous poverty. We have great poverty in the United States. It would be criminal to ignore it and do nothing to try to help out.

What was the first cause that you got involved with?

JS: I started by becoming involved with charities that had Junior groups rather than getting involved with a specific cause. As a very young person, I enjoyed being with people my own age. Now I am involved with several charities — all with different causes — I do not think it is necessary to limit yourself to one or two causes.

What do you feel is the best first step a person can take towards becoming a philanthropist?

JS: Start by being kind to others. If you are disrespectful and nasty you can never be a true philanthropist. Philanthropy is love of mankind. Next, volunteer for a cause you believe in. Get involved with a group you are comfortable with. My book, Successful Philanthropy: How To Make A Life By What You Give, guides the reader on how to become a philanthropist. It has chapters on such things as how to analyze a charity, what boards look for, how to be a good volunteer, and when and how to do volunteer fundraising. Anyone who wants to become a philanthropist will want to give his/her time, knowledge and resources to a charity that is well run and that manages its finances wisely.

How does one usually go about getting on the advisory board of a charity?

JS: In most cases you have to be asked. You could also volunteer to be on an advisory board and then you would have to be accepted. I have an entire chapter in the book about what boards look for. With any board membership comes the responsibility of making sure your help the charity in a number of ways.

Which board was first for you?

JS: I think the American Jewish Committee. As a Catholic, I thought it would be interesting to serve on their Diplomatic Outreach Committee. It was a great board — all professionals, lawyers, business people and a few doctors. We all respected one another for all of our differences. I was in my very early 30’s then.

What’s coming up for you, besides promoting this new book of yours?

JS: I serve on seven charity boards, chair many galas each year and host many charity parties. This takes up quite a bit of my time. Presently, I am being asked to speak on philanthropy by various groups and by different television networks. Public speaking comes naturally for me. I especially love television and would love to have my own show one day.

Do you hope to write another book?

JS: Yes, I am planning it now.

How do you like to spend your free time when not working?

JS: I love style and fashion, so this interest takes up a good deal of time. My family and husband are my top priority and I’d like to spend more time with them. I love to travel. This year we took several trips. The ones that were most interesting were the two trips to Costa Rica and then the two trips to Nicaragua. My daughter Elizabeth Shafiroff and her friend Lindsey Spielfogel planned them. We took these trip for animal rescue — and then to meet and support several animal rescue groups. We met and mingled with the very poor of both countries, too. Wherever we could, we gave our support.

What is your favorite restaurant in New York?

JS: Michael’s for lunch. For dinner I like Sant Ambroeus restaurant. Also Craft, for its farm fresh ingredients, and then the new Upland.

Are there any concerts or events that you have tickets to in the coming months?

JS: I love the opera, ballet and then fashion and art exhibits. Each year, I usually go to several openings including ones for the MEetOpera, NYC Ballet and ABT. I have had a subscription series for NYC Ballet forever. Ballet is another favorite of mine.

Finally, Jean, any last words for the kids?

JS: Children need to be taught to be philanthropists. This must occur both at home and at school. An entire section of Successful Philanthropy: How To Make A Life By What You Give is devoted to this topic.
