Lasers are Leading in Gum Health

Lasers are leading in gum health at Frank Celenza’s dentistry practice.

EVERYONE KNOWS THAT flossing and brushing are critical to maintain the perfect smile—but care of the gums is equally important and frequently neglected. Ignoring the gums can result in gingivitis, and prevention is a great reason to go for regular dental hygiene visits. If left untreated, gingivitis can result in periodontitis—the leading cause of tooth loss in adulthood. Fortunately, this is a treatable condition, and lasers are leading in gum health to promote the solution.

Traditional periodontitis treatments often include scraping the teeth, and frequently more invasive surgical treatments designed to provide access to the tooth root surfaces, say’s Dr. Frank Celenza. Unfortunately, although effective, this procedure can be uncomfortable, difficult to master, and often includes unpleasant healing experiences, not to mention aesthetic concerns.

Although not new, laser therapy is gaining momentum among periodontists for its effectiveness and acceptance by patients. Energy is absorbed by inflamed tissue without harming healthy tissue, and destructive bacteria that have invaded the gum tissue are destroyed.

There are many applications of laser treatment, but two in particular are gaining acceptance in the periodontal community. The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is the only FDA recognized and approved treatment for periodontitis that can claim to regenerate lost support for the teeth. It is proving to be a far more acceptable and comfortable procedure for moderate to advanced cases than traditional periodontal surgery, and typically results in less recession. Alternatively, Laser Pocket Disinfection (LPD) can be used to control gingivitis, and is easily performed by a dental hygienist as an adjunct to a regular hygiene visit.

In both cases, a thin laser fiber is introduced painlessly into the gum sulcus around the teeth, allowing light energy to penetrate deep into the tissues. This helps reduce inflammation, kills bacteria, softens deposits on the roots, and allows for deeper cleaning. The sulcus is then sealed with the laser to form a clot that initiates a regenerative healing response.

Laser treatment is also showing great promise as a means to decontaminate and treat ailing implants, as with the Laser Assisted Peri-Implantitis Procedure (LAPIP). Implants do not respond to conventional periodontal treatments largely because their surfaces are designed to be much rougher than tooth surfaces. The LAPIP method, which also utilizes light energy, can be an effective way to treat exposed and contaminated implant surfaces.

From the patient’s perspective, laser treatments are much less disruptive than traditional surgical methods. There is no surgical incision, and no need for suturing. Post-operative discomfort is a rare occurrence, and normal daily activity can be quickly resumed. As more and more links between oral and systemic health are becoming understood, finding a periodontist that is trained in laser treatment or asking your dentist for a referral to one can be a very beneficial health measure, both from a preventive and a reparative standpoint.

Wise Living, Couples Who Plan

It’s exciting to enter a new decade. But how well are you prepared for the next 10 years?

If that seems too daunting, let’s talk short-term. Are you even ready for the next 12 months or longer?

Take time to discuss with your partner now can streamline your lives for the next few years, helping to avoid misunderstandings and conflict in your relationship…

If you’re wondering where to start, take a look at our checklist.

Budget Planning

Money is often a matter of conflict in many households. Why? Because there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way to manage your income. Both may be good at saving, but when it comes to how those savings are used, opposite viewpoints can come into play, here where the problem could come in.

You may be saving for buying a new home, getting better coverage from market leaders such as Allstate insurance, putting money away for the children’s education, but then your spouse believes that money should be spent on a family holiday? Or what if, they were planning a surprise vacation for the two of you, with first-class tickets abroad.

To prevent spoiling each other’s plans, sit down and discuss your budget in-depth, come to an agreement as to how money should be spent or saved.

List of Priorities

Be sure to have that difficult budget discussion sooner, understand each of your viewpoints and priorities. What is your focus on starting a new family business? That special holiday away from home may just have to wait because you’ll need to keep the business running. If your children’s education takes top priority for the next few years you should consider putting money aside for education extras like tutors. That could mean fewer clothing excursions.

See how priorities could impact your spending and budgeting decisions?
It’s best to start off by discussing what matters to each of you as a couple first, so it gives a landscape to your future spending and savings.

Your Family’s Future

Here’s another discussion that may evolve out of discussing life goals, do you want to start a family? Something that couples forget to consider.

If your careers are your number one priority, having children maybe a few years down the road. It’s best not to assume your partner feels the way you feel, only when you start looking at purchasing items for the baby room. And if you’re battling to have children, do you have the money for IVF treatment or should you work that into your budget as part of items to save for?

A lot to think about. what’s important is to discuss life timelines to ensure that you are both on the same page. Not knowing your partner’s needs can be difficult to navigate.

Discuss Your Health

You won’t reach goals on your priority list if you’re not healthy enough to enjoy life. Take time during the start of the year to evaluate where adjustments must be made to create a healthier lifestyle.

Make sure that you start a list and check each box off that will affect your health, education, family planning, stress management, diet, exercise, and even your healthy social life.

Helping each other and planning, having the tough discussions now, could be the difference between a healthy lifestyle or an unplanned emergency hospital stay or burnout.

In Closing

Not all families are excellent at communicating. Have a list and use it to initiate discussions, so that you can start practicing, being prepared for your future is much easier healthier and will keep your relationship on track.

Family is the foundation of society. Invest the necessary time, in the beginning, to you are prepared for whatever may come your way.

Toyota and BIG announce Woven City, the city of the future

Images by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group

Today, January 7th, Toyota announced the future of city living at the CES technology conference in Las Vegas. The Woven City will be a technological playground and proving ground for the future of green energy, autonomous transportation, artificial intelligence, biophilic architecture, and more. They have not yet released information regarding a cost or timeframe, but the groundbreaking is scheduled for 2021.

The Woven City, so named because of both the interweaving of technology with urban humanity and because of Toyota’s history as a textile company, will be constructed in Japan at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The 175-acre site is a former Toyota factory. It will be built on a grid that will emphasize different types of transportation: fast-moving autonomous vehicles, alternative transportation methods, and pedestrian traffic, with the latter two placed in more natural settings. “In Higashi-Fuji, Japan, we have decided to build a prototype town of the future where people live, work, play and participate in a living laboratory,” says Toyota Motor Corporation CEO Akio Toyoda, “This is a truly unique opportunity to create an entire community, or ‘city’ from the ground up and allow us to build an infrastructure of the future that is connected, digital and sustainable, powered by Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell technology.”

The city was designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, who has also worked on Two World Trade Center and a Mars simulation in Dubai, which began in 2017 and is expected to be completed in the next 3-4 years.

It is always interesting when we get to one of these “sci-fi moments” in technology–the realization of something that writers have imagined for decades or centuries. A “city of the future” with cutting-edge technology has been in the imagination since Chicago’s 1905 White City, Disney’s Tomorrowland, and beyond. In fiction, it is often portrayed as either a utopian society or the epicenter of a corporate dystopia. It has, in fact, crept up in several recent movies. Not to say that Woven City will be one of these or the other–only that the intentional creation of a town interweaving humanity and cutting-edge technology seems to capture our dreams, hopes, and fears simultaneously.

For now, let us watch as this new society at the base of Mt. Fuji is dreamed, built, and lived in. Maybe it will see our way to a brighter future.

New York City Ranks in Top 10 Places to Live for Millennials

All New Yorkers know that you can’t knock the Big Apple – now it’s backed by data. Nestpick, a Berlin-based search engine for furnished apartments, has conducted and released its second annual study of the top places in the world to live for millennials, in which New York City placed at #8.

Nestpicker Millennial Study
Study by Nestpick

This study included several criteria under four basic umbrellas: the business ecosystem, “the essentials”, openness and recreational opportunity. Nestpick examined 110 cities around the world under the lens of these specific subjects, broken down into smaller individual categories. For example, a city’s “business ecosystem” score is combined from its scores in employment, startup environment and tourism, and ”the essentials” are broken down into housing, food, transport and several other categories. Categories were rated on a scale between 1-10, then weighed against one another for the final listing.

New York City Skyline

This 2018 study built upon a similar study from Nestpick conducted in 2017, and added 10 more locations. Ömer Kücükdere, the Managing Director of Nestpick, stresses the importance of adapting to the Millennial generation for worldwide economic success. “Millennials grew up in a shrinking world, where the internet opened doors their parents never could have dreamed of, and budget airlines made those avenues real possibilities. It’s now possible to live and work anywhere in the world, and these opportunities are shaping how our planet will look to future generations,” he notes.

New York City not only placed in the top 10 cities worldwide for Millennials – it placed highest on the list of cities in the US for them. But what does that mean for our neck of the woods? If nothing else, it puts the NYC at the center of the action for the next wave of innovations in business, technology and how we live our daily lives.

Rita Hazan
Rita Hazan

There is no shortage of fun or healthy hair care products out there. So when it comes to taking care of your hair this season, it can feel overwhelming when trying to choose the right product for you. In turn, Downtown has not only sampled a myriad of new products — to help lead you to what may work best for you — but has also spoken to reps from those brands:

  • Rita Hazan is a world-renowned hair colorist and owner of the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City.
  • Aaron Grenia is the co-founder of IGK Hair, which is known for its “hairstyling for the modern generation.”
  • Vaughn Acord — who works out of his salon Mizu — is at the helm of V76, which makes American-sourced products that are free of petroleum, sulfates, parabens, gluten and non-vegan elements.
  • Brad and Sarah Pearsall are the co-founders for BRÖÖ, an all-natural haircare collection infused with craft beer, which isn’t just served for Oktoberfest.

What is coming up for your brand?

Rita Hazan: The Root Concealer Temple + Brow Touch-Up Stick — it’s an extension of my original Root Concealer and it’s made for the temples and eyebrows. If you have gray in your brows, a brow pencil won’t cover it, it will only colors your skin. My Touch-Up Stick will actually cover the gray and fill in the brow at the same time – one product that does it all.

Aaron Grenia: Right now we are in full launch mode so a lot of upcoming travel to support this. We are also finalizing five new formulas to launch next year with new technology, and we’re really excited for them.

Vaughn Acord: The 4-in-1 Cleansing Foam, Blue Cedar EDT, Daily Balance Exfoliating Facial Cleanser and Daily Balance Facial Moisturizer are all new from the brand.

Brad & Sarah Pearsall: We’ve got some amazing new products coming soon that are “brewed for dudes!”

Do you have a favorite new product from your brand?

Rita Hazan: Triple Threat Split End Remedy — it keeps my hair strong. I can color as much as I want, blow-dry and flat iron almost every day and my hair stays shiny, long, and healthy.

Aaron Grenia: I love so many of them, right now my top three are Call Time Styling Primer, Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel and Sunday Funday Texture Foam. They all have amazing sheen and textures.

Vaughn Acord: I have waited so long for these to launch and they are all favorites of mine. I do think the 4-in-1 Cleansing Foam is very cool!

Brad & Sarah Pearsall: We both love our Invigorating Shampoo and Conditioner. Since we’re married, I guess it makes sense we like the same thing!

What is your favorite restaurant in New York City?

    Rita Hazan: Locanda Verde.

Aaron Grenia: Carbone, for sure. The food and service there is five-star.

Vaughn Acord: TBar — I’m a creature of habit. I’ve never had a bad meal there and they have the most incredible host. Sant Ambroeus is another one I love.

Brad & Sarah Pearsall: We love the restaurant, La Birreria, because they had us at beer! It’s a beautiful rooftop restaurant on top of Eataly. We also like any hand-pulled noodle place in Chinatown and any Korean restaurant with K-pop karaoke. Are you seeing a theme?

What is the next concert or live event you plan on attending?

    Rita Hazan: Beyoncé.

Aaron Grenia: It’s between Drake/Future or Die Antwoord coming up this month.

Vaughn Acord: Attending a show, as I often work on many — Los Lobos.

Brad & Sarah Pearsall: Just saw Brian Wilson perform Pet Sounds in its entirety last month. Would love to experience that again. We are always in the city in December, for our wedding anniversary, so we love anything on the bill at Birdland!
