Downtown looks back at Karina Gamez’s 2016 Fall/Winter collection

This chilly weather may be uninspiring when it comes to planning your outfit each morning. Let’s look back on New York Fashion Week to get some #inspo.

This week, let’s focus on Karina Gamez. Never heard of her? Don’t worry — she’s about to become huge.

Earlier this year, Washington Square News named her one of the “10 Latina Designers About to Break Into the Mainstream Fashion Industry.”

And she already has quite the celebrity following, with fans like Solange Knowles and Eva Longoria.

The Venezuelan designer made her New York Fashion Week debut two years ago. This year, she presented Karigam, her 2016 Fall/Winter collection in West SoHo during NYFW in February at The Space at Skylight Clarkson Square.

Watch the video of the show here:

Her collection, titled Salto Angel, was inspired by the Angel Falls—one of the highest waterfalls in the world—in her home country. “It is the perfect combination of nature, texture and beauty shaped by the breathtaking Tepuys mountains,” she told Fox News Latino.

You can see aspects of linear architecture and country landscapes in this collection. Her work is a nice communication of cutting-edge stye mixed with functionality.

With high necklines and asymmetric cuts, her line is a modernization of winter chic. Full of knits, leathers, floor-length coats and colorful fur wraps, the line is stylish while giving us perfect outfits to bundle up in this nippy autumn weather we’ve been having.

She somehow brought the jungle feel into her show, filling the large, white space with green lighting and tall potted plants.

“I want the colors — grey-blues, mossy greens, and marsala (wine) tones — to reflect the jungle of Venezuela,” Gamez said.

The non-linear runway felt like a stream, with the models cutting through the crowd, as you can see in the show’s video.

Gamez began her line of clothing, titled KARIGAM, in 2014. Her background in business and fashion design has served her well, building her brand from the ground up.

Gamez created her brand to provide complex and unpredictable clothes for Latinas and cosmopolitans around the world. She is internationally known for her minimal, structured looks and her modern, feminine lines.

Her online shop is coming soon — and we can’t wait!

Highlights From The Launch Party Of Downtown Magazine’s Fall 2016 Issue

On Oct. 18, Downtown Magazine held its Fall 2016 Cover Launch Party at the new Four Seasons Downtown Private Residences at 30 Park Place in Tribeca. Champagne and hors-d’oeuvres were served and guests had the luxury of enjoying the incredible interiors designed by Robert Couturier and stunning views of Lower Manhattan from the 78th Floor in one of the newly-finished penthouses.

With a long guest list, the who’s who of the downtown area joined Downtown in celebration of this very special issue of the magazine. As the undeniable architect of Lower Manhattan, the man on the new issue’s cover story, Larry Silverstein, was the event’s special guest.

“The first time I came upon Grace Capobianco, I said to her ‘You’re a unique woman”

“I never expected to have the opportunity of having a magazine as spectacular as the magazine we have with us tonight”

The elevators were overwhelmed with guests who included; VIPs and real estate power players including:

In tribute to the aforementioned Larry Silverstein — a pillar in the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan — Downtown prepared two surprises for the evening’s special guest. After Mr. Silverstein had given a speech, Downtown CEO & Publisher Grace A. Capobianco thanked Mr. Silverstein with a heartfelt video by Director & Cinematographer Zurab Katamadze and Photographer Dimitri Mais with help from the Downtown team, featuring many of Mr. Silverstein’s closest friends and collaborators, both in real estate as well as in the downtown area.

Friends such as Bruce Ratner, Norman Sturner, and Leonard Boxer spoke to Silverstein’s character, while local community figures including Jessica Lappin, Gale Brewer, and Catherine McVay Hughes talked about the incredible role Silverstein has played in the revitalization of downtown. Within the video, his daughter Lisa Silverstein and her husband Tal Kerret noted how incredibly lucky they are to be a part of the Silverstein family and how both Larry and Klara Silverstein inspire them every single day. Son Roger Silverstein offered similarly-touching sentiments.

“We’re blessed to have the magazine and we are blessed to have her”

The second surprise from Downtown was in the form of music. When Ms. Capobianco first learned of Mr. Silverstein’s love of classical music, she knew exactly who to call. Her dear friend Gregory Harrington, Ireland’s most recognized violinist, who has played all over the world for celebrities heads of states and several times at Carnegie Hall. Most recently he played for Hillary Clinton.

Although it was Downtown honoring Mr. Silverstein, he spoke eloquently about Ms. Capobianco’s talent, passion and incredible job she’s done with launching Downtown Magazine almost 8 years ago. A much-needed vehicle for the new downtown.

“I never expected to have the opportunity of having a magazine as spectacular as the magazine we have with us tonight and the person who is remarkable, responsible for everything in that magazine because of the passion that she has for this magazine — the passion she has for everything that exists down here in Lower Manhattan, at the end of the day, we’re blessed to have the magazine and we are blessed to have her. Lo and behold I’m on the front cover, so how can I say anything negative about this magazine. The first time I came upon Grace Capobianco, I said to her ‘You’re a unique woman.’ Unique because whatever she did, she did it with such zest, with such drive, with such passion that I finally said to her “You know, I’ve never met another magazine publisher like you.” She said, “Well, how many have you met?” I replied “Well, you’re the only one that I’ve met,” said Mr. Silverstein as he and the crowd roared with laughter.

Geraldo Rivera on life as a New Yorker, a journalist and a trailblazer

Geraldo Rivera
Geraldo Rivera

Geraldo Rivera has been in the spotlight for well over 40 years as one of television’s top reporters. The New York native was arguably the first broadcast journalist to interject personality into his interviews and coverage, as he has always been known to be on the scene and in the faces of those he has questions for. In turn, Geraldo’s success crossed over into writing best-selling books and hosting several long-running talk shows on both radio and television.

Downtown caught up with Geraldo for some Q&A about his life both on and off-screen. More info about his various appearances — much of which for Fox News — and charitable endeavors can be found at www.geraldo.com.

What do you wish more people knew about Geraldo Rivera?

GR: That I am the same tough guy compassionate journalist I was when I started a half century ago — actually 1970 — but that I have evolved and grown with every generation. And how folks relate to me depends on when they tuned in. I’m relevant to the Baby Boomers with Eyewitness News, Generation Xers with the Geraldo talk show, Rivera Live and the syndicated specials, and the Millennials with shows like Dancing With The Stars and The Apprentice: Celebrity Edition.

Do you have an accomplishment you’re most proud of?

GR: That would be during my time as a reporter for WABC-TV in New York, where I exposed the deplorable conditions at the Willowbrook State School for the mentally-retarded, the population now called the developmentally-disabled. Our journalistic and financial crusade, which is on-going is to provide these people a more dignified life.

You were involved with reality television way before people realized that reality TV was a normal concept. What inspired you to break the fourth wall so early on in your career?

GR: I would say my biggest technical or style contribution, aside from being the first rock and roll newsman, has been to make reporting more up close and personal. This used to be a profession where journalists were mere spectators, aloof from the scene of an incident — whereas I become part of the story. I cried with people who cried, I laughed with people who were laughing, and I managed to relate in a way that hadn’t been done previously, and that also made it easier for people at home to relate.

Is there anything you haven’t yet accomplished but still hope to?

GR: To get an interview with President Obama before he leaves office. I have tried to get one for the past eight years, but he is ducking me because I work for Fox News, which he hates. As a lawyer admitted to practice at the Supreme Court, I would also like to argue a case in that important venue.

What’s coming up for you career-wise? Any upcoming events you can talk about?

GR: I am writing a war memoir, so right now my priority is to finish that first draft and see it published. It will be my eighth book. Unfortunately, it has become enmeshed in the recent Fox News upheavals.

When not you’re busy with your career, how do you like to spend your free time?

GR: With my five children and three grandchildren, and my wife Erica, of course. We love to head out on the ocean in our boat or to take a trip to our silly little island off the south coast of Puerto Rico.

Having been all over the world for work many times over, what is it that keeps you local to Manhattan?

GR: Being born in Manhattan, this is where I feel most at home. Both my professional and personal life is rooted here. I have spent so much of my time here that I feel like “Mr. New York.”

Finally, Geraldo, any last words for the kids?

GR: Be cool, stay in school, don’t get married too young, work hard as if you love your job, and love and respect your partner.
