Downtown Highlights: Dough – Dough-Not Miss This!

You Dough-Not Want to Miss These Doughnuts

This time on Downtown Highlights, we visited Dough, a brioche doughnut shop. Dough started as a small shop in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Their popularity quickly grew, encouraging the opening of more shops across New York City. Now, Dough has seven locations including Flatiron, Brooklyn, Rockefeller Center, Astoria, Urbanspace Vanderbilt, City Kitchen, and Smorgasburg.

In this episode, we had the pleasure of interviewing Vicky Pantazi, the manager of the Flatiron Dough location. When asked what makes Dough special, Pantazi said without hesitation that it’s the dough.”It’s very fluffy, it’s very soft, and that’s what makes us unique” Pantazi stated. All doughnuts at Dough are made fresh in small batches daily to ensure that all customers only receive the best.

Dough has vegan options as well. Vegan options include Vegan Plain Glaze, Vegan Cinnamon Sugar, Vegan Hibiscus Glaze (Seasonal), and Vegan Blood Orange (Seasonal). Even though these options are vegan, the dough is still really soft and fluffy. We tried the Vegan Cinnamon Sugar doughnut off-camera and fell in love with it. We couldn’t even tell that this doughnut was made solely with vegan ingredients!

The Taste Test – Hibiscus Glazed Doughnut

Since Dough has not yet developed a line of gluten-free doughnuts, Sam came out from behind the camera to do the taste testing instead. She decided to try the Hibiscus Glazed doughnut. This flavor is available year-round. The bright pink glaze on this doughnut was so eye-catching, she couldn’t resist.

The doughnut was as delicious as it was beautiful. The dough was soft and fluffy, just as Pantazi had described. The pink glaze was sweet and smooth, and of course, strongly tasted like hibiscus. The glaze is made fresh in the kitchen by cooking down hibiscus flowers. No wonder it tasted so fresh!

The next time you are looking for some breakfast to start your day with, check out Dough. You won’t regret it! For the last Downtown Highlights episode, click here.

Feeding Flatiron’s First Responders

First responders in and around the Flatiron District are eating well this month.

The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership is funding daily meal delivery orders, with the help of a GoFundMe campaign, to support neighborhood restaurants and feed essential workers.  The Partnership launched the “Feed Flatiron’s First Responders” initiative on May 4 and hopes to continue it through the end of the month.

The Partnership is purchasing more than 100 meals a day-

seven days a week, from restaurants in Flatiron and NoMad—neighborhoods known for their critically acclaimed eats and culinary significance. The restaurants deliver meals to EMS workers, police officers, and firefighters. Lucky recipients include the EMS Station at Bellevue Hospital, two local FDNY Stations (Engines 3 and 14), and the NYPD 13th Precinct.

“Through our Feed Flatiron’s First Responders program, we are expressing our deep gratitude to the first responders in our community who are putting their lives on the line every day to fight this pandemic,” Partnership Executive Director James Mettham said. “At the same time, this is a great way to support local restaurants that have contributed so much to our neighborhood’s vibrancy, who are now struggling to stay afloat.”

The Partnership committed an initial $10,000 to kick-start the program –

and is matching every donation, dollar for dollar, up to $10,000. They have raised over $6,100 via the “Feed Flatiron First Responders” GoFundMe page and purchased about 2,000 meals so far. They hope to reach $10,000 to continue the deliveries through the end of May.

“We are grateful to everyone who has generously donated so far,” Mettham added. “We encourage people to continue contributing to the campaign to show our EMS workers, firefighters, and police officers—as well as our restaurant owners and employees—that our community has their backs.”

Participating restaurants that have prepared and delivered meals

include, Mangia, Zucker’s Bagels & Smoked Fish, Hill Country Barbecue Market, Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine, Leonelli Taberna, Bourke Street Bakery, Bravo Pizza, Eataly Flatiron, Field’s Good Chicken, Honeybrains, Memo Shish Kabob, Areppas, Melt Shop, BXL Zoute, Sweetcatch Poke, Summer Salt, Om Juice Bar, Taim, Dig Inn, Mexicue, Zero Otto Nove, Little Beet, Blackbarn, Flatiron Plate, and Dos Caminos.

Mizu Sushi Dishes Fresh Fish

Mizu, a sushi spot in flatiron, is unpretentious. The dining area is simple, with plenty of tables and a tasteful yet simple aesthetic. Just enough to remind you that you’re here for sushi. In fact, the only standout feature of the restaurant–physically, at least–is their sushi bar, with stool seating and a window where you can see the fish. This focus will be a theme throughout the experience. Mizo understands that no amount of flash or finery can compete with a focus on the essentials.

The chefs at Mizu purchase their fish fresh every morning, as well as scallops, shrimp, and sea urchins on a seasonal basis. Their food is always made-to-order. If you want takeout, we were told, you might have to wait for as long as 20 minutes once you arrive–they don’t like to leave food waiting.

Mizu

This dedication to freshness and quality at Mizu permeates the menu. Every dish which presents itself fish-forward is full and flavorful. The presentation is stylish but, again, never to the point of distraction. For starters, try the yellowtail carpaccio or the white tuna truffle. The yellowtail comes with jalapeno and yuzu dressing and has a fruity flavor, which is complemented perfectly by the spice. The white tuna truffle is milder and sweeter–it is a don’t-miss for fans of truffle oil.

When you get to the sushi, start with the Flatiron roll: spicy crunchy salmon topped with salmon, avocado, and ikura. It is a delicious example of Mizu’s fish-first sushi at its best. The salmon topping focuses the flavor with the sweet, spice, and crunch, letting them enhance the natural flavor. We ended our meal on the Jurassic roll, another of our favorites. The miso sauce topping the white tuna roll gave it a sweeter, almost dessert-like flavor which we loved.

Mizu says that they don’t compromise on their fish, and Downtown believes it. Try as we might, we weren’t able to taste every roll they have to offer. But we haven’t given up. We’ll be back soon–plus, we heard something about a happy hour. We hope to see you there.

Flatiron: Manhattan’s Hospitality Hotspot

Manhattan’s Flatiron District has long been a popular destination for tourists to spend an afternoon or evening. But in recent years, thanks to the neighborhood’s rapidly increasing number of hotels, more visitors to the Big Apple are spending their nights in the neighborhood too, according to a new report.

The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District just issued its eighth annual Flatiron: Where Then Meets Now report showcasing the significant development and growth of the hospitality sector in the district, which goes from 21st to 28th Streets, and Sixth Avenue east to Third Avenue.

“Flatiron Manhattan’s Hospitality Hotspot”

As New York City’s tourism boom continues—with a 19.8% growth in visitors in the last five years and 65.1 million tourists expected citywide this year—the Flatiron District’s hospitality sector has grown substantially. The number of hotel rooms in the neighborhood increased by 93.8% since 2011, bringing the total number to over 4,650—and an additional 1,620 are currently under development, according to the report, which provides a snapshot of how hotel development on both Broadway and 28th Street have been catalysts for business growth, paving the way for other new and trendy dining and retail offerings nearby.

“The growth of the hospitality sector in the Flatiron District has been remarkable, as this report demonstrates,” said Jennifer Brown, the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership’s Executive Director. “It’s easy to see why hotel developers want to be in Flatiron. With the neighborhood’s central location, proximity to historic and cultural sites, a plethora of restaurants, and easy access to public transportation, Flatiron is a popular destination for tourists and local visitors alike. The report also shows that Flatiron is a dynamic neighborhood with an irresistible mix of commercial and residential sectors.”

“Sixty restaurants, bars, cafes, and retailers operate within Flatiron’s 25 hotels”

Flatiron is a prime illustration of a broader citywide trend: one out of every five dwelling units now under construction in New York City is a hotel. The number of New York City hotel units in the construction pipeline has doubled between 2013 and 2018. Among the seven hotels currently in development in Flatiron include the Renaissance Hotel, Moxy Hotel, Ritz Carlton, Virgin Hotel, and Springhill Suites Marriott.

Sixty restaurants, bars, cafes, and retailers operate within Flatiron’s 25 hotels, offering both tourists—as well as New Yorkers—more than just a place to stay. Flatiron: Where Then Meets Now takes a deep dive into the rich history, beautiful architecture, luxurious amenities, and diverse dining options at five of the district’s most exciting hotel developments: Freehand Hotel, The James New York NoMad, The Evelyn Hotel, The New York EDITION, and The NoMad Hotel.

“It’s easy to see why hotel developers want to be in Flatiron”

“Flatiron is a welcoming destination for global travelers who want to experience everything that comes with one of Manhattan’s most dynamic neighborhoods—world-class arts and culture, rich history and architecture, and exciting dining and nightlife,” said Fred Dixon, President and CEO of NYC & Company, the official destination marketing organization for the five boroughs of New York City. “With everything the neighborhood has to offer, including its wonderful and growing array of hotels, Flatiron’s hospitality is an integral part of the New York City tourism landscape.”

Starting on June 19, the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District (BID) will hold eight weeks of free programming—fitness classes, tech courses, games, and entertainment—on the Flatiron Public Plazas this summer.
