With the recent pandemic closures, our routines have switched from in-person to virtual. Without our NYC average of 8800 steps per day, our fitness needs to go virtual, too. We reached out to Dogpound’s Head of Training and Development Lala Duncan to get the scoop on their virtual training program.
Downtown Magazine: We see a lot of gyms selling pre-recorded VPT, what is the difference? Lala Duncan: Many gyms and fitness professionals started selling pre-recorded workout programs before the pandemic, given the low cost and ease of access of these programs. That market has grown with COVID.
Clients get to have access to a DP trainer with them whether they are at home, on vacation
Pre-recorded programs are great for people to stay active during uncertain times, but these are workout programs designed to appeal to a wide range of people. They are not designed for any one individual and, after a period of time, clients can become unmotivated and bored because of the lack of accountability or personal attention. Most people who purchase pre-recorded programs end up paying for programs they don’t use.
That is why Dogpound offers individualized VPT based on your goals and available equipment. Clients get to have access to a DP trainer with them whether they are at home, on vacation, or at a quarantine destination (Hawaii and St. Bart’s).
DTM: What does one need to prepare for VPT?
LD: Whether you are a current or new client, we ask each client to answer a short questionnaire about their fitness goals, time commitment and expectations as well as what type of equipment, if any, you have to train with at home. Once we have that information, the trainer can devise a long-term plan to keep their training and on track.
Clients with mild to moderate depression, sleep deprivation, and anxiety
DTM: Are clients staying motivated?
LD: In the beginning, there was the fear of “losing my gains.” People were rushing to buy dumbbells and weights or whatever they could get their hands on just to stay fit, not really knowing how long this would last. After a couple of months, I noticed that there was a slump in motivation with a lot of my clients. I had clients that were suffering from mild to moderate depression, sleep deprivation, and anxiety all brought on by the uncertainty of the pandemic. Some days my sessions would consist of talking and light stretching. Especially for New Yorkers, we were in the thick of it. For some of my clients, our VPT session would be the only interaction they had with anyone all day or week. Our amazing staff of trainers takes this responsibility very seriously. It’s not just about working out; it’s about health, longevity, and ultimately happiness.

DTM: Are clients getting the same results from virtual training?
LD: More, actually. Originally the goal was just to keep people moving and motivated. Now the goal is to keep progressing people forward in their long-term fitness goals. About 3/4 of my clients have set up some kind of home gym, whether it be some dumbbells and kettlebells or full gyms with squat racks and weights. Since we have started the VPT at Dogpound, I now see clients more than I did in the actual gym.
DTM: Do you think VPT here to stay?
LD: Absolutely! As the saying goes, it takes 30 days to create a habit, 60 days to make progress, and 90 days to see results. It’s not going anywhere; Virtual training is truly the new virtual reality.

2021 Downtown’s Valentine’s Day Gift Guide is all about Pampering
Maybe this year is the year to accept that the 2020 Holiday season will be different.
It’s not that long ago that we made it through the toughest two seasons to spend quarantined, spring, and summer. Is this not the time of the year, that most of us long for? Shedding our heavy winter clothes, and shaking off those dreary blues, not to mention those few extra pounds we put on over the long winter months, snuggled up with cookies, hot cocoa, and scrumptious Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding?
Wait… that was me I was talking about.
Personally, I think we need to be a little less worried about jumping on a plane to see Grandma and Grandpa, or jetting off to that island paradise just so you can jump in the beautiful piercing blue ocean in that new bikini, or parasail your way over the long white sandy beaches. It’s so overrated!
What’s not overrated is staying the course, thinking about others, do your part, from populating your travel miles with or picking up on your travels the worst virus in our lifetime.

Holidays are a little different this year, with many people forgoing big family celebrations in favor of smaller, home-based events. All the more reason, then, to make your homebound holiday even more special.
If you’re sticking around Lower Manhattan, we’ve rounded up some great spots in the neighborhood for seasonal cheer. Here, we’ve included some tasty eateries, eclectic shops, and other local highlights. 6. Luke’s Lobster
Classic lobster rolls, crab rolls, shrimp rolls, and cole slaw are all on offer at the Financial District location of Luke’s Lobster (26 South William Street). The seafood shack is also dishing up lobster bisque and New England clam chowder for colder days, as well as DIY lobster roll kits for those who’d prefer to cook (or look like they’ve cooked, via Instagram) at home.

25. Bombay’s
Though Bombay’s Indian Cuisine has a small menu, owner Sonal Vyas and staff work hard to ensure that all its offerings are delicious and made with lots of love — from crispy samosas to tender pieces of chicken marinated in yogurt and spices — and it’s also reasonably priced for the neighborhood.
26. Suited
When business partners Andrew Fazio and Wilson Johnson teamed up to create Suited, Lower Manhattan’s newest cafe, it was with the understanding that you can find good sandwiches or a good cup of coffee all over New York City, but not always at the same place. If you need to shed some pandemic pounds and are willing to respect vigilant protocols, we have scoured the City for some rather interesting; not to mention fun, options for you to stay fit.
As spin class orphans during this pandemic, we chose BYKlyn Yard as our first stop.
In the shadows of The Barclay Center, The Yard, a community yard, is inimitable “Brooklyn”. The walls are curated by Bare Canvas with murals painted by Alpha Arts Alliance featuring Flash o Boy. There are 18 generously spaced bikes, sun sails to provide shade and maximize ventilation, and recycled AstroTurf complete with old soccer lines. The BYKlyn Yard schedule includes top instructors from studios all over NYC. Expect diverse classes with different types of music. The instructor at our visit was Mr. Ney Melo – professional dancer by day, spin instructor by night – his mix of Latin beats, 80s remixes, and high tempo music kept us sweating throughout. While BYKlyn lacks the metrics so many A-types rely upon, the holistic approach to fitness-for-all is refreshing.

That means everything you have come to love about an upbeat SoulCycle class, plus cool breezes, great views, and a full lineup of rides led by all your favorite instructors. The outdoor studio tent in New York is set up in the Hudson Yards Plaza right outside of their retail studio. This assures you of majestic Hudson River views and no lack of options for refueling post-class. The entire user experience is now handless. Check-in is now digital utilizing the SoulCycle app and the sound system offers an all-new, silent-disco audio experience for the SoulOutside series.

You’re not the crazy one. We are. So, fret not. Barry’s Bootcamp has opened the terrace at their Meatpacking location to meet your caloric deficit needs. Their high-intensity interval training will push you to your limits. This time these limits have a view of boutiques and lovely dining establishments. Carefully curated playlists are truly inspirational because it is difficult how you can otherwise sprint so faster and lift such heavy objects. Alternating muscle focus exercises ensure your body gets a balanced workout with plenty of recovery time… all under this lovely tent to protect you from the elements and pesky tourists. Wait. We do not have those any longer.

They brought the Seaport Cinema to The Greens the newest Pier 17 rooftop local. Enjoy the big screen with your favorite movies voted for the movies on select Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Enjoy dinner, drinks, and a movie, with spectacular views. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, you must have a reservation to attend. Reservations are limited be sure to sign up early.

Enjoy, and spread some love from Scott Gerber’s new designs downtown at the Seaport District in New York City, a way for people to come together and heal through art. The “Peace Sign” is a signal to viewers to bring calm to one’s mind when distracted not only by major global events but also by everyday occurrences. By crafting the “Heart”, Gerber urges the viewer to be kind and spread love to those who are suffering.
Lastly, the “Smiley Face” is meant to evoke happiness and positivity to the viewers so that they in turn may spread joy through our communities. Through its simple yet powerful iconography, “Peace, Love and Happiness” sends a universal message of hope and altruism to all that view.
