Downtown Q&A: Illusionist and Mentalist Matias Letelier

In 2011, magician and illusionist Matias Letelier followed the love of his life and now wife, Marlana to the United States.

Her “souvenir from Chile”, as he calls himself, Matias became a proponent of the American dream. Since then, he has been practicing magic for 23 years, professionally since 2005.

Today, Matias is known as one of the most elite magicians in the country, and you can be a part of the magic, right here in NYC.

Matias Performing at one of his “Pick Pocket” events

Magical Beginnings

Matias Letelier’s story of getting involved in magic is a divine one. It began with an inherited magic library and has manifested into his career. Matias enlightens us with the fact that the practice of magic by showing it has meaning and spirituality, with deep roots and religious ties.

He now shares his talents with New York City, as the city’s resident magician, brimming with Infectious charisma, charm, and friendliness. As a dedicated man to his craft, Matias did not stop amid the pandemic. He put smiles back on faces and put the awe back into people’s hearts with his Zoom magic sessions.

Our very own Grace A. Capobianco recently paid a visit to Matias’s show, “Speakeasy Magick” at the McKittrick Hotel, and decided his story – and his talents – shan’t go unshared.

Downtown: What inspired you to become an illusionist & mentalist?

Matias Letelier: I never, ever, ever, thought about pursuing magic as a career. But while I was studying business, there were 4 elements that inspired me to become an illusionist & mentalist:

1) I inherited a magic library from my uncle who suffered an accident and passed away in 2004. He was a businessman but also an extremely talented magician (he did it as a hobby). Imagine myself getting so many magic books!

2) After his accident, every time I performed for his daughter (who was 3 by then) she would “see” her dad and invited him to join the show. It was crazy, and my grandmother and mom (who are fervent Christians) told me it was almost like a miracle! So I started doing a trick in his memory in every show… and thought about continuing his legacy.

3)  Along with my friends at the Business school, spending 2 weeks each summer and winter in lower-income areas of our country helping them fix their houses, and then in the afternoon, we would teach them about marketing, finance, accountability, and other business skills. Then in the late afternoon, we would have some fun activities and I was in charge of the entertainment for being a magician. The shows were very simple but with so much heart that people were super excited. This is where I learned that I had a way to connect with people which made them feel happy.

4) Finally, at the business school one of my teachers told me “you should mix your passion/hobby with marketing… then you’ll have a unique business”. I thought to myself “I have the passion, the magic skills, and marketing knowledge, and most importantly, I have the story of my uncle… maybe I should do magic for a living”… 16 years after, here I am. I’m so happy and thankful for all the many blessings I’ve received so far.

DT: What is the difference between magic, and illusionism?

ML: For me, there are magicians and illusionists. Magicians were the real deal in ancient times. But they have nothing to do with the modern illusionist. While magicians were pursuing the enlightenment or spiritual connection with the divinity (God, samadhi, Heaven, etc), the illusionist tried to create the “illusion” that they were able to do the same as these magicians. For example, an ancient magician would have the ability to “read” someone’s mind and body and know exactly what was happening with them. Then they will recommend a course of action. On the other side, mentalists (which is an area in illusionism), do a few tricks to pretend they can read someone’s mind, just to reveal the number you were thinking of or the name of a loved one. In other words, magic was meant to achieve a higher state of consciousness associated with your spiritual life, while illusionists just try to entertain you.

DT: Can you tell us a bit about your performance styles and what kind of events you cover?

ML: My performance style includes strolling close-up magic and stage performances with big illusions. Although in recent years I’ve started incorporating many elements from mentalism. And I’ve done it all: private yachts in the Caribbean, cruise ships, big theaters, small theaters, clubs, hotels, private events, and corporate events all over the world.

DT: What do your performances entail? Which “trick” is the biggest crowd-pleaser?

ML: I focus on high energy and interactions. For me, the most important part is to connect with the audience. I usually become friends with my audience (even in a 10 min routine), and then it feels like I’m a friend showing them some secret skills. I have a  very warm approach to the audience, more so than other magicians, this is a great benefit.

DT: It appears that you can speak four languages: native Spanish, fluent English, medium Portuguese, and basic French. Does that ever come in handy when practicing magic?

ML: Not so much when practicing, but definitely when performing. Many times I have international audiences, clients will book me because they know that I can speak different languages. People feel much more comfortable when I speak their language. Besides, it’s fun for me and they enjoy the extra effort, when I pronounce the words correctly. Even though I might not be able to do a full show in French, the fact that I can do a few tricks and communicate with them, shows them I care. People care about you when you show them that you truly care about them and make the effort.

DT: What gets you the most excited about performing?

ML: I don’t smoke, I don’t do drugs, I don’t drink. Seriously. But when I’m out performing I get a “magicians’ high”. My wife says it is because I perform with passion. I’m not focusing on the clock. I’m just out there enjoying myself, getting to know new people, learning from their stories, and sharing some magic. It makes me so happy, and I feel my audience feed off of that energy the same way I feed on their reactions and energy. To experience that is one of my favorite and exciting things during my preformance.

DT: You base your work mostly out of New York City. Where is your favorite spot to perform?

ML: Even though I’ve been lucky to bring my magic all over the world, my favorite spot in NY is Speakeasy Magick at the famous McKittrick Hotel. Todd Robbins invited me to be part of this along with the best magicians in NYC – and I’m not telling you this because I’m part of the show – but this is without a doubt, the best magic show in NYC. Why? Because we created a unique experience that happens right in front of you, in the club car at the McKittrick Hotel, a place that is so cool that you have to experience it to see what everyone is talking about. This show always puts a smile on my face, plus everyone behind the show, including all the amazing performers, and staff, are simply the best.

DT: What do you love most about NYC?

ML: Do we have time? (laugh). So many things. The diversity of cultures, all the entertainment options, the great restaurants, the social life, the fact that the different social classes mix in every block, all the activities happening in every corner no matter where you are, Speakeasy Magick, and, of course, from here you can travel anywhere in the world. I mean, how can you not love this city?

“The Great Love Debate”: Downtown Q&A with Host Brian Howie

Historically, dating has never really been easy.

Back in the day, it was “When do I call them back?” “What kind of flowers should I bring?”. Those questions have turned into “Which emoji do I send back?” “Should I swipe left or right?”, and so layers become added onto the already-complicated of being single in today’s world. “The Great Love Debate” explores the trials tribulations and triumphs of the dating scene nowadays, and dissects the “dating disconnect” that plagues each major U.S. city, one show at a time. We chatted with the show’s host and NYC native, Brian Howie, to put our finger on the pulse of today’s dating scene. He tells us that your love life might not be as tricky as you may think, all with the help of the show.

The show will return to New York City for the final time tonight at City Winery NYC. Special guests will include Erin Davis from Bravo’s Camp Getaway, Christina Weber from the new Andy Cohen Peacock show Ex-Rated, Anna Morgenstern from Summer House, and a few more surprises!

Brian Howie at The Great Love Debate show

DTM: Can you tell us a little about the history of “The Great Love Debate“, and how it came to fruition?

Brian Howie: In late 2013, I wrote a book called “How To Find Love in 60 Seconds”, which was a semi-satirical look at Hollywood dating, and what I thought the issues were.  My manager suggested that rather than do a traditional bookstore promotional appearance, why not raise some of the questions that the book raised in a Town Hall-style, theater setting, and we decided to do a one-off in Santa Barbara, CA in Jan 2014, and that one-off has turned into more than 400 shows in over 120 cities and 11 countries.

DTM: How does the show work? What does it entail?

BH: Every show is different, but the common thread is that we are trying to get to the root of the dating disconnect in that particular city.  So I am out in the crowd, trying to pull complaints, hopes, problems, pressures, anecdotes, dating disasters, etc, and by the end of the night hundreds of people have been heard from…and they discover that their love lives really aren’t that far away from being absolutely fine!  We have an on-stage lineup of celebrities and local personalities who react to and comment on, the proceedings.

It is wild, it is feisty, it is hilarious, and most of all, it is honest.

DT: What makes “The Great Love Debate” different from other shows like it?

BH: Most “live dating shows” are fairly scripted, we totally wing it every night, which adds to the excitement, and makes every show a unique experience. Many people come over and over, they always learn something new, and always meet someone interesting!

DTM: One of the show’s taglines is “Get your head out of your apps.” We think that’s great. Does the show’s motive draw audiences away from dating apps? What is your personal stance on those apps?

BH: We can’t pretend apps don’t exist, or won’t exist, people just need to know how to use them, and why, and understand that they are a means to an end.  I always get asked, “what’s the best dating site?” And my answer is simple. EARTH. This means there are opportunities and possibilities all around us every single day to find love, you just know how to recognize those opportunities, act on them, and most importantly, don’t reject them. The apps, when used correctly, can increase the opportunities to connect, what you do to build upon those opportunities is the key to using the apps.

DTM: Do you think dating will ever revert back to what it used to be before dating apps?

BH: The upside of the lockdowns was that people realized that technology isn’t a satisfying substitute, that people really want and need to connect in person.  So apps will always be around, but people will use them more to get to the actual date. People probably complained that the telephone was ruining dating back, in the 1930s. They got used to it. 🙂

DTM: Have you seen or heard of any success stories that have come from “The Great Love Debate”?

BH: 48 couples (that we know of!) are now engaged or married after first meeting at one of our shows. The effect of getting a couple of hundred people in a room, making them think, hearing them laugh, adding a few drinks, brings down so many walls that literally hundreds of dates have come out of the experience, not to mention the positive changes in dating, habits.

DTM: You’ve had some pretty great special guests on the show before, like former Bachelorette contestant and former Bachelor, Nick Viall. What’s it like having those great special guests on the show?

BH: We have had dozens of reality stars, award-winning actors, top comedians, best-selling authors, and just about every Bachelor and Bachelorette winner on our stage at least once, and the thing about love is that it’s the one thing that everyone – regardless of fame or background – has experience with, heartbreak to share, hope to build on, and opinions worth listening to.

Special guests of The Great Love Debate include Nick Viall and other greats

DTM: What is unique about singles and show contestants in New York City?

BH: They aren’t afraid to speak their minds – especially the men. We do shows in Seattle or San Jose, and some of the men think, “If I have to speak, I am going to get laughed at tonight.” In NYC, the men think, “If I get to speak I’m going to get laid tonight.” Different energy!

DTM: What do you enjoy most about doing the show in NYC?

BH: The energy, the frustration, the stories, and the possibilities. The dating culture is really a microcosm of the city itself – sure it’s hard here sometimes…but it’s worth it!

DTM: Where is your favorite spot in NYC to perform or simply visit, particularly in the Downtown area?

BH: We have done shows here more than anywhere else, I am an NYC native and love to come back to the city. We have done theaters, comedy clubs, live music venues, but our experiences at City Winery have always been fantastic – spectacular venue, great crowds…and plenty of wine!

5 Things to Do Downtown

Entertainment in Downtown NYC

Downton Manhattan is a tourist’s dream. Your choice of entertainment is really only limited by your imagination. There is something for everyone on this life-affirming island. Whether you’re after a taste of history, mouth-watering food, or incredible views, you’ll find it in downtown NYC. You’ll need a few days to take it all in, so make sure you book a comfortable hotel. You’ll want to spend your downtime chilling on your comfy hotel bed watching movies or playing online casino games (no need to worry about a casino dress code) and resting your weary feet in between some truly awesome experiences.

Ride the Ferry

So where to begin? Let’s start with daytime entertainment. If the weather is good, take yourself off for a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. You’ll get glorious views of Lower Manhattan, and as an added bonus you’ll get to see the Statue of Liberty from the water – for free! So, if you don’t manage an actual visit to Ellis Island to see the Lady up close and personal, at least you’ll be able to say that you got a good look, albeit from a short distance. Having said that, if you’ve got the time and inclination, we do recommend taking that trip to Ellis Island for a proper visit. Be sure to plan your trip and book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Walk the Bridge

Visitors on a budget, fear not! There are plenty of ways to experience Downtown NYC without spending a fortune. The Staten Island ferry is free, so that’s a good start. But walking is also free. And walking across the Brooklyn Bridge will undoubtedly give you the New York feeling you’re looking for. The views are magnificent, and the experience is unforgettable. Follow that up with a visit to Battery Park and discover the parks’ monuments dedicated to soldiers, inventors, explorers, and immigrants.

Explore the Seaport

After you’ve taken your rest, head back out and make your way to the South Street Seaport. Explore the charming, cobbled streets, gawp at the gorgeous buildings, take photos of the Brooklyn Bridge, and then stop for a bite to eat at one of the many yummy eateries that you’ll find dotted about the place. If you’re visiting in winter, look out for the ice-skating rink. Or pop into the local maritime Museum for a short, but sweet history lesson.

Dine Somewhere Historic

When evening rolls around, you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you entertained and well-fed. However, if you want to celebrate the occasion, head to Pier A Harbor House. You can choose to eat outside by the water for a casual dining experience (we recommend an early, sunset dinner), or you can take it up a notch and head up to the 2nd floor for a more formal dinner. Either way, you’ll get to enjoy your meal while in a historic, NYC landmark. Harbour House first opened its doors in 1886 and has since been lovingly restored to reflect its historic importance.

View the Night-Time Skyline

NYC is the city that never sleeps, so taking in views of the city at night can be just as spectacular as the city by day. Why not head up to the One World Observatory (Freedom Tower) for an incredible view of the big city in all its bright lights. During the summer season, the Observatory allows visitors to enter up to 8 pm and then stay as late as 9 pm. You certainly won’t regret an evening visit. Just as you won’t regret an evening walking tour. Plenty of tour companies offer night tours, and these can be a great way to escape the heat and bustle that comes with day tours.

Why Should New York Need to Legalize Online Gambling?

Legalize Online Gambling?

Legislations vary around the United States. While online casinos, lottery, and sports betting are legal in some states, other states like New York are yet to join the bandwagon. The state has the longest history of restricting any form of gambling and even elaborates on the list of offenses and related penalties.

There aren’t any big casinos in New York for that reason. However, the situation has slowly improved over time. New York residents aren’t explicitly barred from taking part in wagering activities, especially online casinos and sports betting. However, running an online gambling institution is outlawed.

What that means is while New York residents are free to wager online without risking prosecution, running an online gambling platform within state boundaries is illegal. Hence, operators catering to New York are located offshore. If you’re a New York Resident and want to explore iGaming, visit PAPunter.

The Push to Legalize Online Gambling in New York

While there’s no way to be certain if and when online gambling restrictions will be lifted, the Gaming Commission has given the nod. The decision is now entirely up to the state authorities to legalize and regulate iGaming. However, the leadership believes that authorizing online gambling will alter the Constitution.

Needless to say, it’s going to be a lengthy and hectic process. Gambling aficionados aren’t impressed. While online gambling continues to thrive in neighboring New Jersey amidst the pandemic, New Yorkers are left struggling with iGaming legalities. This is affecting the state coffers too.

According to a report from earlier this year, New Yorkers often take local commuter trains to neighboring Jersey City, Newark, and Hoboken to try their luck at sports betting during major events. Using geolocation services, New York punters legally lodge wagers on a range of sporting events from their smartphones.

The state is missing out on a major revenue opportunity, and the situation is only going downhill if this continues to thrive.

The Booming iGaming Scene in New Jersey

Since 1992, Nevada has had an unrivaled monopoly on betting operators in the United States. New Jersey was quick to learn their lesson, slowly legalizing most forms of gambling through a steady push by the state’s lawmakers. Over time, New Jersey managed to regulate the gambling industry, even monitoring the thriving online casino business within the last half-decade.

Gamblers located within the boundaries of the state can legally wager online apart from racetracks and in land-based casinos. Although New York is taking steps in the right direction, the efforts aren’t sufficient to counter New Jersey’s expansive offerings. NJ is undoubtedly the most sought-after destination for punters based in New York. Thus, hurting the state coffers a little bit more every year.

The New York administration has taken note of the issue. The 2019 Poker Bill is a step in the right direction. But the pace needs to pick up quickly in order to counteract the growing NJ influence. New York authorities should try and replicate New Jersey’s success by following the Jersey story from the start.

Gaming in NYC Where to Play Online & In Style

Whether living in the Big Apple or stopping by for a whirlwind weekend, the number of options for entertainment can be dizzying. Without a solid itinerary for travelers or an apartment with a prime location, it’s hard to catch it all.

Some prefer to make it to a Michelin-star restaurant or a Broadway show. Others may want to follow tour guides through the Lower East Side or head to the top of the Empire State Building.

However, gamers may feel a bit out of luck. Those traveling to New York City may notice the city isn’t home to brick-and-mortar casinos. The nearest locations include the Bronx, Queens, and even New Jersey’s famous Atlantic City.

Still, those looking to stay downtown have options for real-money action. Most of New York City is WIFI-enabled, which means that a mobile-ready online casino and a bit of cab fare is all a traveler needs to transform the Highline Park or Katz’s Deli into a truly unique experience—even by New York standards.

When it comes to ranking locations where live gaming would be fun, three criteria are important: seating, WIFI, and the view. Any New York native knows these three factors are often mutually exclusive… but not always.

Seaport

The Greens Seaport District includes the famous Pier 17 facility in downtown Manhattan. This location doesn’t skimp on views or activities. Not only is it nestled in one of the most interesting parts of the city, but it’s also one of New York’s newest investments—and it shows.

The facility includes a rooftop bar, cinema, fitness center, public art installations, and a slew of brand-name and indie retail shops. Most of the Seaport district includes high-speed public WIFI, which means that this location is great for an online gaming session.

The rooftop of Pier 17, in particular, includes an area called The Greens. True to its name, this is a plant-friendly urban space with plenty of areas to lounge and relax.

Given that the Brooklyn Bridge will be twinkling in the background and the Pier is located near to Wall Street, this location would be a great spot to play card games that require some counting and strategy, like poker or blackjack.

Highline Park

Like the Seaport District, the Highline Park is a relatively new addition to New York. The park is a minimalist and modern interpretation of what a park can be. It’s situated in an abandoned railway that’s raised above the busy West Village streets.

The WIFI offered here is reliable and quick, though seating may be tougher to come by. Most visitors spend an afternoon walking through the park, so find a spot and claim it as your own (just not on the grass).

Given the mix of classic architecture with modern skyscrapers surrounding the park, this location will make any online game feel like outdoor activity. Not to mention, West Village was once home to some of New York’s earliest casinos.

The high energy of the park combined with the grandeur of surrounding architecture makes this location perfect for an exciting game like slots or roulette. Remember, in New York City, it’s okay to make some noise.

Staten Island Ferry – Unsplash.com/photo-1583244416356

Staten Island Ferry

Unlike The Greens at Seaport and the Highline Park, the Staten Island Ferry might raise a few eyebrows when posited as a tourist destination. Sure, locals know the massive, orange ferry as an easy way to spend an afternoon with no plans or, though less likely, a legitimate form of transportation from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island.

While not as refined as the other locations, the Staten Island Ferry is a cultural activity that straddles the line between utility and tradition. There’s plenty of seating, reliable WIFI, and a clear view of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, New Jersey, and, most importantly, Lady Liberty herself.

The Staten Island Ferry operates 24 hours a day regardless of the weather. Food and beer are available onboard but don’t expect a Pier 17 menu. Instead, sit back, open up a mobile gaming app, and watch the world go by.

Given the casual environment and the stunning views, the Staten Island Ferry is an ideal location for classic jackpot games or, if the Ferry’s moving fast enough, a casino race game.
