Classic Movies That Are Worth Watching Again

Several of the most anticipated movies have seen their release dates pushed back for various logistical reasons, leaving moviegoers with fewer options for new screenings.

Thankfully, there has never been a better time to be a film buff with so many titles and ways to watch them available to us. Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and the plethora of other streaming services that have launched in recent years mean we watch almost any movie we could ever want, whenever and wherever we want.

This is great for discovering flicks that you might have missed when they were first released. It also means you can rewatch your favorite movies over and over again.

So if you’re in the mood to binge on some classic films, then you may want to add these classics to your watchlist.

21 is a movie that’s loosely based on the true story of the MIT Blackjack Team. The team was made up of at least 70 students, graduates, and employees of several leading US and
international universities and operated for more than two decades.

They worked together to count cards while playing blackjack, with slick operations far beyond what the average casino patron could do. Although it’s possible, most people can’t calculate the odds of any outcome or hand in blackjack at the same as playing as it requires a lot of mental agility. So by working together, they were able to wipe out the house edge.

The film cuts out a lot of the work that went into running the team, which is understandable when you try to condense 20 years into two hours, but it manages to capture the complexity of the operation, the training and practice required, and the pressure placed on players.

21 is currently available to stream on Hulu and Starz.

Hot Fuzz is a British film starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and is the second in the Cornetto Trilogy. It tells the story of Nicholas Angel (Pegg), a Sergeant in London’s Metropolitan Police. He’s so good at his job that his colleagues feel like he’s showing them up so they conspire to send him to a leafy English village to work.

It’s here that he meets PC Danny Butterman (Frost), the son of the village’s Inspector, Frank. All isn’t as it initially seems though, the quiet village of Sandford is hiding a dark secret. Despite not having a recorded murder for years, the accidental death rate is sky-high.

Angel and Butterman comically uncover a major conspiracy that leaves hundreds dead.
Everything comes to a head with a huge shootout and car chase, disturbing the village on the day that “Village of the Year” inspectors arrive.

If you’ve seen Shaun of the Dead, Paul, Run Fat Boy Run, or The World’s End, you will love this film. It’s funny no matter how many times you’ve watched it and is a great easy watch when you need a good laugh.

Hot Fuzz is available on NowTV and Hulu.

Die Hard
The world is split into two groups, people that think Die Hard is a Christmas movie and those that are wrong. Despite the festive element to it, watching Bruce Willis smash up Nakatomi Plaza is fun any time of the year.

Released in 1988, Die Hard helped Willis break into action movies. Before that, he had mostly appeared in US sitcoms. It also spawned a legendary movie series with four sequels, most of which are also great watches.

Willis’s comedic qualities still come through in Die Hard too, with lines like “No **** lady. Do I sound like I’m ordering a pizza?”, “Welcome to the party pal!”, “Now I know what a TV dinner feels like”.

Die Hard is so well-put-together that it’s just as funny and just as entertaining the 100th time as it was the first.

For fans of action, it’s packed with explosions, shootouts, and insane stunts from start to finish, all helping to make it one of the best movies of all time.

Die Hard is available to stream on Hulu and HBO.

Hudson Square a Gateway to the Future

A decade ago, during the Great Recession,

Hudson Square was a neighborhood known as the gateway to the Holland Tunnel.

Its streets packed with cars bound for Jersey, the heyday of being New York City’s former printing district was long gone. Beautifully built loft buildings stood half empty and there was almost no commercial business or pedestrian traffic to speak of.

But today that has changed.

In the past 10 years, fueled by a thriving economy, careful strategic planning, and the support of the city and the business community, the Hudson Square Business Improvement District has emerged and Hudson Square is thriving. Vacancies decreased 300 percent and development increased from zero to 4.75MM square feet. Grab-and-go establishments have doubled, and daytime pedestrian foot traffic grew from 30,000 a day to 70,000.

But what Hudson Square is known for is its creative sector. Sixty percent of the workforce is employed by a technology, media, or communications company. Google and Disney are moving their headquarters in, too.

All of that was before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Since the shutdown, pedestrian traffic dropped over 80 percent, 87 percent of retail businesses have closed, and many other businesses have reinvented themselves in response to the crisis.

By mid-March Adafruit, a maker of tools, equipment, and electronics, pivoted. Now it creates face shields for healthcare workers and electronic components for much-needed ventilators. Now, the company is making personal protective equipment and essential items available to all New Yorkers on its website.

Then there’s Vivvi. The employer-sponsored childcare center provides its 12-hour services exclusively to medical professionals and other essential employees on a drop-in emergency basis.

The neighborhood also is home to Deborah Miller Catering and Great Performances, which would normally be catering spring galas and other big events. But today, the companies feed frontline workers and the homebound elderly.

“While our creative businesses work on technologies, messaging and communications to get us through to tomorrow, the local businesses that support them are helping us get through today,” says Ellen Baer, president of the Hudson Square Business Improvement District. “We’re proud to serve this resilient and forward-looking community.”

The Hudson Square BID and its businesses are harnessing their resources and strengths to aid in the neighborhood’s recovery.

And although the answers aren’t all figured out, business districts can’t afford to just think about today. There will be a tomorrow and the Hudson Square BID is preparing for it.

Yoli Mayor the Cuban Sound Machine

With a powerful voice, Yoli Mayor wants her music to be real and mean something to others.

Besides her singing, Yoli Mayor, a Cuban American has also written and performed in plays and dabbled in jewelry and clothing design.
With a powerful voice, YOLI MAYOR wants her music to be real, and mean something to others. Singer Yoli Mayor began singing when she was two. But she didn’t croon “My LittleTeapot” or “Old MacDonald.”

The first song she remembers singing is one of Aerosmith’s biggest hits.“It honestly just happened,” she says. “The first things I remember singing are “I Don’t wanna miss a Thing” by Aerosmith and the song from The Little Mermaid, “Part of Your World.”Perhaps she was destined, from the time she was two and singing Aerosmith, to lift up her voice with power and grace. Which she did, during the first episode of season 12 of America’s Got Talent.
However, infamous judge Simon Cowell was not so impressed when she first opened her mouth to sing “I Put a Spell on You” by Annie Lennox. He told her the performance didn’t feel young enough and asked if she could sing something else. After harried host Tyra Banks ran out on stage to assist in removing Yoli’s diamond jewelry and kicking off her shoes, Yoli chose“Make It Rain” by Ed Sheeran. And she blew the roof off the place.
Yoli didn’t magically arrive at this point in her life. Her family, especially her parents, uplifted and encouraged her along the way.“My mom has always been the number-one fan, my parents, together,” she says. “From the beginning, my mom always encouraged me to keep singing, and my dad was the voice of reason but he still always supported me. He’s a harsh critic, but that’s because he wanted me to grow.

”Her musical inspiration comes from several different artists, including Frank Sinatra and Amy Winehouse.“I love Amy Winehouse because she was raw from start to finish,”

Yoli says. “Her music was real and unapologetic, and that’s what is attractive to me as a songwriter.”Yoli wants to reach people with her music.“I want people to hear my music and think, ‘How does she know? How did she know that’ show I felt?
