Chow Down at Five Lower Manhattan Restaurants

Chow Down in Lower Manhattan, there is an immense range of delicious spots to frequent. According to Explorer In Chief Josh Katz, there are five restaurants where you go as soon as humanly possible.

Caravan Uyghur Cuisine

Manhattan’s only Uighur restaurant is located in the heart of Lower Manhattan. Their noodle dishes (above) strike the perfect balance between exotic spice profiles and hearty comfort food. (200 Water Street)

Temple Court

Tom Colicchio’s excellent farm-to-table, American-style restaurant is set within the beautiful atrium and cozy corners of The Beekman Hotel. (5 Beekman Street)

Bao Bao + Suspenders

Bao Bao makes delicious, authentic Chinese food out of an endearingly small restaurant with limited seating. Their pho is fantastic. Immediately next door you’ll find Suspenders, a beloved local watering hole that’s been open for 33 years. For a wonderful experience, take advantage of either spot’s outdoor seating and combine the two. Just ask nicely first! (106 Greenwich Street)

CUT by Wolfgang Puck

Their menu is creative, the presentation is artful, and the meals are scrumptious. While most steakhouses seem stuck in the 19th century, CUT has designed both their menu and interiors with a modern twist, tastefully balanced with a respectful nod to tradition. (99 Church Street)

Makina Cafe

Makina Cafe serves up incredible Ethiopian cuisine from their food truck in Governors Island. While I love the family-style spreads of typical Ethiopian fair, this place has perfected the personal injera plates full of delectable sides like miser (red lentils), Gomen (collard greens), and Tikel Gomen (cabbage with carrots and potatoes). This place is an unbeatable start to a delightful day. (Governors Island)

Downtown Highlights: Ladurée – A Taste of Paris in New York City

Downtown Highlights is Back!

We are excited to announce that we are bringing back Downtown Highlights this summer! Our Lifestyle Editor, Marley, and I believe that Downtown Highlights is the perfect way to highlight our favorite businesses, restaurants, and events after the coronavirus pandemic! Watch Downtown Highlights this summer to stay up to date with what’s trending in New York City.

Ladurée – A Taste of Paris in New York City

Our first stop this summer was Ladurée. Ladurée is a French patisserie located at 396 W Broadway in New York City. Inspired by Parisian tea rooms, it has a refined atmosphere. There is a variety of stunning seating areas to pick from. We chose to sit in the garden area.

During our visit, we had the pleasure to interview the heir and president of Ladurée, Elisabeth Holder. After our interview with Elisabeth, we tried delicious treats including macarons, a macaron glacée, and a matcha latte. If you aren’t in the mood for sweets, Ladurée has many options of main courses on their menu that you can order for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For those looking to take a trip to Paris without leaving New York, Ladurée is the place to visit!

Dine In For Life This Summer

At a time when many New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet, the nonprofit The Alliance for Positive Change is hosting a virtual event on July 30 to support its vital food and nutrition programs, which provide free meals to New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses.

The annual event, which normally goes by the moniker “Dining Out For Life,” will take place virtually this year in New York City due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dining Out For Life has been a widely successful international initiative that supports local HIV service nonprofits like Alliance.

On a dedicated day, restaurants around the nation donate a portion of their proceeds to these nonprofits. Last year, more than 50 local HIV service organizations partnered with 2,400+ participating restaurants, 4,500+ volunteers, and more than 300,000 diners to raise an astonishing $4.28 million for people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States and Canada.

This year, Alliance is hosting “Dining In For Life” and encouraging participants to order takeout from participating restaurants in lieu of an in-person event across New York City. By dining in, participants can stay safe while continuing to support local restaurants and the food programs of Alliance.

Alliance will designate funds raised to support its food and nutrition programming, which provides more than 28,000 –

hot meals and food pantry items each year and offers a lifeline to New Yorkers who often struggle to make ends meet. The program is core to Alliance’s network of support, and the organization has been witnessing an even greater demand for nutritious food during these challenging times.

“This year, the global coronavirus pandemic has created unprecedented economic hardship, and caused innumerable people to lose their jobs and livelihoods,” said Sharen Duke, Alliance CEO & Executive Director. “For nearly 30 years, Alliance has shown kindness and compassion and we will continue to do this now, as many of those we serve are facing even greater obstacles now to maintain their health. We are asking all New Yorkers to consider July 30 as a moment to help your fellow New Yorkers to feel better, live better, and do better.”

Diners can participate in Dining In For Life by ordering takeout on July 30 from –

  • Amata: 209 E 56th Street, New York, NY
  • Arabesque: 4 E 36th Street, New York, NY
  • Duke’s: 1596 2nd Avenue, New York, NY

The Sexiest Menu in New York City: Jean-George’s The Fulton

The fresh haul –

is brought back to Pier 17 in time for lunch and dinner when it’s served up in myriad styles inspired by seafood traditions all over the world: sometimes sashimi, other times crispy.

Get a taste –

of this Lower Manhattan culinary gem in the Downtown Alliance’s new video on The Fulton:

The Fulton’s “the sexiest menu in New York City,”

Jean-Georges justifiably boasts — and with dishes like warm octopus and fresh mozzarella, salmon soaked in brown butter and yellowfin tuna tartare, he’s likely to receive little if any pushback on such a claim. (The New York Times, after all, has been fawning over The Fulton’s whole sea bass in a pastry crust.)

Plus, the operation’s attention to detail doesn’t stop at the tastes and appearances of its elegant, supple dishes. This dining experience is perfectly paired with a stunning view of Brooklyn Bridge out The Fulton’s windows.

A Taste of Italy at Ristorante Rafele

IMG_7070

Ristorante Rafele was recently certified by the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce as an authentic Italian Restaurant serving genuine Italian fare in New York City. To celebrate this honorable distinction, Rafele’s hosted members from the Italy-American Chamber of Commerce, unveiling a new menu entitled “Calabria”, in reverence of the traditional dishes of the Italian South.

Sourcing its ingredients fresh from local farms and Italian imports, Rafele’s is known for clean, palpable food. New Yorkers have long been proud to recognize the true Italian flair of Ristorante Rafele and its credible cuisine, and it’s gratifying to see the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce recognize it too.

The Calabria menu showcases the following delicious dishes:

Aperitivo:

– Crostini Misti: eggplant and mushrooms (coluccio and soons), chicken liver and anchovies, cannellini beans tuna and red tropea onions

Appetizer:

– Eggplant parmigiana with smoked mozzarella

Pastas:

– Spaghetti with mixed seafood and breadcrumbs

– Filei (coluccio and soons) with sundry tomatoes, peperoncino calabrese, nduja and caciocavallo calabrese

Entree:

– Swordfish with caponata calabrese

Dessert:

– Figs, amaretti ricotta cheese cake
