Red Market Salon’s David Cotteblanche talks Jessica Minh Anh, fashion trends & more

Jessica Minh Anh
Jessica Minh Anh

David Cotteblanche is not only the owner of Red Market Salon, but also a top New York City hairstylist. His work has been featured in the fashion shows of top designers like Yohji Yamamoto, Christian Dior, Diane Von Furstenberg, Ralph Lauren and Nicole Miller. He has styled photo shoots for styled photo shoots for Elle, Town & Country, Gotham Magazine and Playboy. Beyond traditional high-end fashion, he has also helped style plenty of well-known musicians, including Duran Duran and Hot Chip.

Following David’s styling of Jessica Minh Anh for a recent New York fashion show, David caught up with Downtown for some Q&A. More info on David and Red Market can be found online at www.redmarketnyc.com.

How did you hear about Jessica and her fashion show coming to New York City? Did you know her prior to her coming to the New York area?

David Cotteblanche: I heard about Jessica from my friend Mikael Vojinovic. He is a top photographer in France. I started to work with him doing photoshoot in New York City 20 years ago. He connected me with Jessica when he was shooting her in Venice. I never worked with her before. Mikael advised me to go with her project.

What was the focus on the hair/fashion for this particular show? And was this decided prior to the show and were you included on the creative process?

DC: My only focus was Jessica. She is very talented, but also very egocentric. She creates a concept fashion show around the world based on promoting haute couture designers and she is the queen of the show. Jessica always wants a big headpiece. I decided to create one for her marketing photoshoot…The second one for the fashion show was the three different bridges in New York: Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and the Williamsburg Bridge. My friend Sascha Kovabysascha helped me to create the headpiece. The rest of the models I created a low bun, with a dimension of two knots.

When you create hair styles for a particular fashion show does it have anything to do with the actual clothing themselves or more of the fashion designer vision?

DC: When I create a hairstyle for a particular fashion show, it’s decided prior with the designer, who explains the vision of the show to me. Then we decide together.

Where do you get your inspiration from, for the many hairstyles?

DC: My inspiration comes from many hairstyles is movies, architecture, New York City, music, painting, my surroundings…

Do you enjoy working behind the scenes in fashion shows?

DC: I love to work behind the scenes in fashion. I brought in a team of professional and talented stylists, which happen to include great friends of mine. The team consists of Jerome Lordet, Xavier Grange, Crystal Tushinsky, Nathaniel Torres, Karina Herrera, Nicole Eventoff, and Tina Martinez.

What trends do you see coming for the winter 2016 and spring 2017 seasons?

DC: Shorter bob, long HAIR with long bangs and long layers. For the color, blonde ashy, not too much contrast. Ombré is over. Brunette, chocolate with soft chestnut highlights in at the end.

The Hudson Waterfront: The Manhattan Riviera?

Darren Sukenik
Darren Sukenik

There was a time when well-healed downtown New Yorkers had to jump on their private jet to enjoy luxurious beaches and seaside attractions.

Not anymore.

New York City’s enhanced outdoor living experience has convinced some Manhattanites to think twice before heading to their second or third homes so that they may embrace everything downtown New York has to offer along its thriving waterfront.

Instead of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic to the Hamptons, or enduring long lines at the airport, New Yorkers are now focused on the city’s beautiful, waterfront amenities.

Residents can take sailing lessons at North Cove Marina at Brookfield Place, go for a run or bike ride along the beautiful Hudson River, or practice yoga in Battery Park. Lower Manhattan boasts both privacy and close proximity to whatever a resident may need. Whether Tribeca, SoHo, Greenwich Village or West Chelsea, downtown is not only thriving, but acts as an extended amenity to residents, all while encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle.

The Hudson waterfront has only just begun to transform. In fact, this summer, construction began on the fantastical Pier 55 project funded from acclaimed businessman, Barry Diller and his wife, fashion legend Diane Von Furstenberg. This 2.7-acre park will float atop the Hudson River, and will include event space and amphitheater, lush greenery and lawns for sunbathing. In fact, the park will offer the public an extensive entertainment program throughout the year. Set to be complete in 2019, famed architect Thomas Heatherwick is designing the park that will greatly modernize the local, downtown landscape.

This may not be the west side’s only floating amenity — with the potential development of new floating pools, it’s only a matter of time before they hit the Hudson. New Yorkers will be able to take a dip all while taking in unobstructed views of Manhattan’s skyline from the west. New York City has put forth an initiative to filter its rivers via + POOL, so residents and visitors alike are free to swim in clean water. According to + POOL, the layered filtration system incrementally removes bacteria and contaminants to ensure nothing but clean, swimmable water that meets both city and state standards; no chemicals or additives, just natural river water. This will change the way New Yorkers enjoy the city’s outdoor activities and only create more natural, luxurious amenities.

The city is not only livable because it is now amenity rich, it is actually more livable now because of a concept called urban biophelia. Biophelia, by definition, is the human need to connect with and be surrounded by nature. Urban biophelia, as I define it, is a city dwellers need to connect with nature for their sanity. In truth, people do not always realize the importance of green space and parks. Green space and parks are not meant to be aesthetically pleasing, their existence is based on true human need. People no longer want to escape Manhattan for the country — they just want to have that sense of psychological calm, a Zen moment, here in the city.

The expansion of outdoor living and activities downtown has led to an increased number of uptown New Yorkers to join the easy, chic living of downtown Manhattan. Downtown’s current foreign investors come from Fifth and Park Avenues, and we are only expecting this trend to grow.

Brookfield Place: a luxury sanctuary coming to Downtown

Brookfield Pavilion

Lower Manhattan has recently been experiencing a retail boom with the expected openings of the Fulton Center Mall, South Street Seaport and the World Trade Center Oculus Shops. Leading the way of these commercial hotspots is the soon to open Brookfield Place.

The towering waterfront office complex that faces the Hudson River on 200 Vesey St. has already lured in luxury brands such as Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenberg and Paul Smith to list a few. Though regardless of how many high end fashion commodities Brookfield Place will provide, it is important to mention that fine dining and exercise aren’t far behind.

For the dining experience, one of Brookfield’s signature destinations will be Le District, a French response to Eataly, the high-end supermarket with a settlement in the Flatiron District. Le District, owned by restaurant tycoon Peter Poulakakos, will be divided into “districts”: a restaurant, café, market, and garden area. It is expected to open late this year.

Next on the list of dining is Hudson Eats, a dining terrace which will feature 14 high-end counters that will seat up to 600 diners. Such eateries will include L.A.’s own Umami Burger, Dos Toros Taqueria from Brooklyn and Blue Ribbon Sushi. Alongside the casual food places, critically acclaimed chefs Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Jose Garces are planning an opening of world class restaurants each in the same location.

If you think you outdid yourself with lunch or dinner, an Equinox gym has been announced to open in the building this Fall if you wish to attend yoga sessions or cycling classes. Food and exercise aside, The Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) has inked a slot in Brookfield Place as well as Bright Horizons Family Solutions opening a child care center.

Let us not take away the spotlight from the retail giants that plan to make Brookfield Place the most extravagant of shopping centers. Starting the list is Saks Fifth Avenue, which announced earlier this year the opening of their second flagship store at this very commercial center. Following the list are Italian powerhouses Ermenegildo Zegna and Salvatore Ferragamo, England’s finest, Burberry, and Hermes, the iconic French line. These and many more will be the tenants to promptly occupy space in New York’s newest fashion Shangri-La.

Luxury designer and  New York socialite Diane von Furstenberg will soon be targeting Brookfield Place as a new home to one of her boutiques.

The Brookfield  location will be home to  the third store for the designer in New York. The existing boutiques include her flagship store in he Meatpacking District and the SoHo location.

Von Furstenberg, has been a fashion figure in New York since the ’70s. She also enjoyed a major resurgence in the early ’90s with new confidence and new designs. The news of the new boutique comes on the 40th Anniversary of her iconic wrap dress that revolutionized the fashion world and took America by storm. The impact of this signature piece was so significant, that it hangs in the Smithsonian Museum today.

Not limited to just fashion retail, von Furstenberg created the DvF Awards in 2010, annually awarding $50,000 to each of four women who show passionate commitment to women’s causes. She and her husband, media mogul Barry Diller, are committed to a number of different philanthropic pursuits. The pair have contributed more than $35 million to the High Line, the largest single donation to a park in New York City’s history.

According to WWD  the 2,000 square-foot store will be located next to the Michael Kors store, and across from Theory. Von Furstenberg will be joining such other luxury designers at Brookfield  as Hermes, Burberry, Ferragamo, Michael Kors, Ermenegildo Zegna and Theory.

The brand’s arrival at Brookfield Valong with the other high-end designers is another signal that the Lower Manhattan area has become a preferred destination for luxury designers to find success.

This addition to the shopping center is part of the $250,000 million dollars development which is set to be completed in 2015.

Diane von Furstenberg Celebrates 40 Years of Her Iconic Wrap Dress

Last Friday night in Los Angeles, Diane von Furstenberg celebrated the 40th anniversary of her iconic wrap dress. The Wilshire May Company Building hosted the party, where the “Journey of a Dress” exhibit was revealed and a limited edition collection announced.

Diane von Furstenberg, a Belgian-born Jewish designer, started her own company in 1970 with an investment of $30,000. In 1974, after a few years of hauling suitcases of jersey dresses to department stores, she created the wrap dress. Below, at age 23, is von Furstenberg pictured in the WWD announcement of her new design.

By 1979, her business was grossing $150 million a year in retail sales. Forty years later, Diane is still a top designer and a leader in the fashion world. She was named President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2006, and has held the position since.

She created the DvF Awards in 2010, awarding $50,000 each to four women a year who show passionate commitment to women’s causes. She and her husband, media mogul Barry Diller, are committed to a number of different philanthropic pursuits. The pair have contributed more than $35 million to the High Line, the largest single donation to a park in New York City’s history.

Her revolutionary wrap dress is a permanent piece in the collection of the Costume Institue of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Von Furstenberg’s mother, daughter, and grandaughter have all worn the dress, which, according to the designer, symbolizes “freedom, empowerment, and confidence.” Television personality Louise Roe (who scored her first job with BBC wearing a DVF creation) summed up the designer’s legacy at the Friday night opening; saying, “she’s the queen of girl power.”
