Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ Inviting New Fall Collection Embodies the Season’s Appeal

The gradual onset of the cooler weather tends to tease the much-anticipated comforts many of us look forward to all year long. From intimate fireside conversations to curling up with a glass of wine or a good book under a lush throw, the enjoyment of the season is only enhanced by the gorgeous colors of the fall foliage from the vantage point of the home.

So when Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams announced their soon-to-come Fall Collection—the New Modern—we waited with delight. It did not disappoint.

Designed with intention, each beautifully crafted furnishing is meant to elevate the way we live—today. It’s the brand’s version of modern, with each piece exuding a warm yet architectural nature that invites conversation and comfort while emanating an understated, yet unavoidable, clean-lined elegance.

To showcase a behind-the-scenes take on what defines the New Modern, we sat down with Allison O’Connor, President, and CEO of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, to get an unvarnished look at the breadth of the collection and some insight into the inspiration behind some of our favorite pieces. We hope you enjoy the discussion as much as we did!

Downtown:  How would you describe the essence of the new Fall Collection?

Allison O’Connor, President & CEO of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams: Our Fall Collection focuses on warm and welcoming design with an architectural appeal, a blend of beautiful craftsmanship, and timeless style. We’re drawn to elements that both look and feel luxurious—like the deep and generous cushions in our sophisticated Montauk Sectional, so tailored yet still inviting. We’ve also been excited to work with even more exceptional materials this season. Our Hayes Dining Table, for example, is inspired by mid-century Italian design and features a stunning contrast of American walnut and lightly antiqued brass sheeting. You’ll find that a lot of thoughtful, design-driven detail has gone into this collection.

Decorative Pillows.

And at the heart of everything, of course, is customization: We love to see our customers express their own design voice through our brand, whether it’s choosing a favorite fabric from our exclusive Kravet library, or unique details like nailhead and finish.

Downtown: How did your definition of the New Modern inspire the direction of the collection?

Allison O’Connor: Most of us have experienced some major lifestyle shifts recently, and a lot of that has centered around home—how we interact with space at home, what home means for us. We’ve built deeply personal bonds with our concept of home, and at the design level, it has inspired us to consider how fresh, relevant design can elevate the way we live. This is the basis for the New Modern: It’s a deep reverence for living in the present, and for a customizable design that becomes part of the fabric of our homes, part of those memories we make. For us, it’s about creating interiors that are aesthetically pleasing but also support our busy lifestyles and families.

Keane Dining Table & Chairs.

Downtown: The cushions on the Montauk Modular Sectional look incredibly comfortable—while maintaining a very sophisticated yet casual look. What are some of the details that went into achieving the look and feel of the sofa?

Allison O’Connor: We conceptualized our Montauk Sectional to look effortlessly elevated, yet still be an irresistibly inviting place for everyone to gather thanks to its exceptionally versatile design. We love its Turkish corner cushions and deeply angled back—they create a very tailored yet sculptural appearance. We added a wood plinth base to complete the look with an understated foundation, and also offer some additional opportunities for customization with more than 20 wood finishes and over 600 fabrics.

Montauk 4-Piece Sectional.

Downtown: We particularly love the warmth of the Keane dining chair and the beach-vibe sophistication of the Portia Dining Chair (can’t you see this in an expansive Hamptons dining room with views of the ocean?). What do you most love about these two designs and what inspired their shape for this particular collection?

Allison O’Connor: Yes—absolutely, ocean views and all! Our Keane and Portia dining chairs are perfect examples of multifunctional sophisticated seating. Both have a fresh, modern feel that complements almost any style of the dining room, office, entry, or bedroom while enveloping you in an extremely comfortable sit. Keane, in particular, has a modern floating curved back and warm solid-maple wood frame accented with a plush seat and back that can be customized in fabric or leather. And the Portia Dining Chair is a modern slip-covered barrel chair for easy-care dining. With its loose seat and comfortable curved back, Portia is perfect for casual dining settings. And you can customize in a choice of hundreds of fabrics.

Portia Dining Chairs + Vann Dining Table.

Downtown: We are obsessed with pairing the Portia Dining Chair with the Vann Dining Table. What would be your ideal color palettes/finishes when using them together?

Allison O’Connor: I love that style pairing. Portia and Vann nicely balance uncomplicated form with a sophisticated feel. I like dining rooms to feel airy and relaxed, to gather my family and friends and share a meal together, and warm neutrals are a wonderful way to set the tone. For Portia, I’d choose MG+BW exclusive performance linen in Flax, a warm and grounded fabric that’s very family-friendly and also easy to care for. To complement that, I love the idea of our Vann Dining Table in the Weathered Oak finish—it really emphasizes its unique grain patterns from reclaimed wood.

Spindle Chair.

Downtown: We love the height and look of the Spindle chair. What types of frame finishes and fabric choices are available?

Allison O’Connor: You can customize our Spindle Chair from more than 600 fabrics and 40 types of leather, including performance fabrics, velvets, linens, chenille, and boucle. That also includes exclusive access to Kravet fabrics that were previously only available to designers. We also have more than 20 unique wood finishes to work with.

The beauty of Spindle is its exceptional craftsmanship—it features this very classic yet timeless turned-wood detailing, and it evokes a distinctive aesthetic depending on the finish. Choose something dark and smoky like Storm and you instantly have a very dramatic and modern piece or try something a bit rich and warm like Toffee and the chair evokes a very different kind of character. The spindle has unique upholstered details, as well, that add striking contrast against the frame—so choosing any favorite fabric is going to stand out beautifully.

Niles Bed.

Downtown: The Niles bed looks particularly enveloping. Is it as comfortable as it looks? What do you most love about it?

Allison O’Connor: Niles is the ultimate bed to choose for serene, cocoon-like comfort. It’s designed in a curved, overstuffed batwing silhouette with a sheltering headboard and rails that seem to wrap around you. It also features finely tailored seams that bring a level of sophistication without losing its warmth. I think it appeals to an instinctive part of us, almost like a hug. It’s just lovely. And that’s how a bedroom should feel—a sanctuary where we go to relax, recharge, and feel nurtured. If you want to experience our Niles Bed in the most luxurious way possible, customize it in a soft fabric like performance luxe velvet. You might not want to get out of bed in the morning.

Downtown: We love the Margaux Full Swivel Side Chair and its midcentury vibe—what inspired adding a much-loved swivel feature to such a gorgeous chair?

Margaux Swivel Chair.

Allison O’Connor: Our Margaux Side Chair is a much-loved part of the collection, with influence from mid-century Italian design. It’s already a fluid piece of furniture, with a svelte and smartly scaled frame that complements dining rooms, home offices, and entertainment areas of all dimensions. Then we realized that we could bring fresh appeal to this favorite by making it a swivel, so that this chic little accent chair can suddenly, truly, sit anywhere in style. The swivel version features a sleek metal base in two choices of finish, and we created a matching swivel ottoman to celebrate the design.

Downtown: The Tate Dining Table is a favorite—is the oak finish as textured as it looks? How many people can it comfortably accommodate?

Allison O’Connor: Yes, that fantastic texture is actually a striking sunburst veneer pattern over carbon oak. Our Tate Dining Table balances two key elements perfectly—modern minimalism and natural materials—in a very sleek and clean design. It has a tapered central column that you can comfortably seat six people around, so it’s a smart, design-forward choice for a dining room or an open-concept kitchen.

Tate Buffet.

Downtown: The Tate Buffet exemplifies everything we are loving about cane these days! What inspired the use of this material?

Allison O’Connor: The exquisite detail of materiality is centric to our design ethos. Our Tate Collection’s star material is carbon oak. It has this rich, varied texture that adds so much depth and character. The woven cane front of our Tate Buffet gave us an opportunity to juxtapose two very distinctive, natural textures to create a functional piece that feels at once organic and modern while balancing the drama of unrelieved black with some lightness.

Blake Media Console.

Downtown: The Blake Media Console shows a bit of a departure from the rest (at least in terms of the color palette). What do you most love about its place in the collection?

Allison O’Connor: Blake is a bold statement piece. Consoles can easily become the focal point in a room whether they’re staged in an entryway, office, living room or dining area, so we had some fun imagining how color, material and shape all command attention. Blake is built in the style of modern campaign furniture, so it has that inherent sense of functional structure and purpose. And to that, we added striking denim blue and satin brass hardware accents as a way to balance masculine form with a very fashion-forward concept. It’s completely unique in this season’s collection, and we love the personality that it brings to any space.

Hazel Flatweave Jute Rug.

Downtown: The Hazel Flatweave Jute Rug adds the perfect pop of color to almost any design in the collection. What inspired the color palette and what would you pair it with?

Allison O’Connor: It’s a beautiful accent, isn’t it? Hazel is one of the exceptional creations from our partnership with Obeetee, who is world-renowned for handmade rugs and carpets. They share a lot of our values, including respect for artisan craft, natural material, and a sustainable manufacturing process. Hazel is made from extremely soft jute so it’s not going to be scratchy underfoot, and the color palette evokes a cool vintage vibe through desaturated colors in warm, earthy tones. The geometric pattern is very current, but Hazel also has a relaxed feel to it, so it helps to set the tone in a modern casual space.

We love it paired with our Vann Dining Table, which has similar geometric lines and a natural look and feel. Grounding the space around our Montauk Sectional is also a great, harmonious look. But we want people to experiment, too, with their own design vision. Hazel is a very adaptable rug to any space—tell us where you’d put it!

Downtown: What are a couple of your favorite accessories in the collection? We cannot get over the Antwerp Boucle Throw in Camel!

Antwerp Boucle Throw.

Allison O’Connor: The Antwerp Boucle Throw is one of my favorites, as well. It’s so incredibly cozy, and something as simple as a boucle texture adds so much depth and character when it’s thrown over a sofa, armchair, chaise, or bed. Another favorite is our collection of Italian Carrara Marble barware—there’s a set of coasters, a lovely and curvaceous champagne bucket, and a large round serving tray. Carrara has a luminous lightness to it, and very faint striations in the stone. It’s a favorite of ours to work with because it adds such richness to a room without being overwhelming.

We also have a partnership with Lost Art Salon and an exclusive collection that we’ve curated with them that I love. Lost Art Salon brings rediscovered art to the public from history and underrepresented groups, with an emphasis on 20th Century Modernism. Our collection features striking watercolors, prints, and photography—modern pieces that reflect a unique vantage point through the lens of the artist.

Ojai Woven Leather Pillows.

Downtown: What are your favorite elements of the collection and which design would you take home with you today?

Allison O’Connor: I really do love how well our Fall Collection embraces modern design that’s completely approachable. Our Giselle Collection is a perfect example of that—it’s a luxurious statement collection, with gentle curves and an elegant profile that makes for gathering and igniting conversations. And the attention to detail speaks so eloquently to the craftsmanship of our artisans. Yet it’s also warm, generous, utterly comfortable—something you can sink into at the end of a long day without feeling like such a glamorous piece is off-limits for every day. Our furniture is made to be enjoyed. I’d take home everything in the Giselle Collection today.

Society Limonta’s Tips on How to Design the Perfect Bed

As the cooler months approach, decadent daydreams consisting of lounging poolside or sipping a rosé near the vineyard’s vines are slowly slipping away. Instead, fantasies of ambient fireplaces, plush throws, and cozy, cloud-like beds designed for repose and relaxation are easing back in. Below, we tapped luxury Italian brand Society Limonta for some easy-to-incorporate tips on how to design the perfect bed for both summer and fall!

1) Layers, Layers, and More Layers!

Layering is one of the easiest ways to increase visual interest, combine textures, and add in contrasting colors and/or prints. It’s also one of the best ways to make sure your bed is ready for both a chilly summer night and a warm fall evening. Topping off layered bedding with a complementing throw blanket at the end of the bed is always a nice touch. It can easily be placed aside or brought into use for that extra bit of warmth. Items such as our Ted Throw take up minimal space yet can provide much more warmth than you’d expect from such a lightweight design. Meanwhile, our Multi Plaid throw’s soft alpaca boucle and wool blend body offer’s a bit more warmth and weight for the colder months.

2) Start With The Right Base!

If shades of neutrals are your palette of choice, start with a lighter base sheet and work your way up to the darker colors for an ombre appeal. If tone on tone holds more of an allure, throw in varying textures or gradations of the same shade for a cohesive yet more dimensional look. When introducing a vibrant or bold statement bed cover, make sure to start with a crisp white base. Doing so will make your outer layer pop and serve as the perfect foil. For those that love the surprise unveiling of a fun sheet set, our Raia Bed Sheet and OLS Flat Sheets play well with a large variety of our solids and patterns, yet offer some hidden personality. Fun fact: our garment-dyed REM Fitted Sheets are made of thermo-regulating linen that is ideal for all seasons.

3) Don’t Be Afraid of Pattern

Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns in large or small ways—pattern on pattern can create an incredibly striking look. If you’re new to blending varying designs together, find a unifying element within each pattern. Whether it’s color, scale, or a geometric aspect, find what ties them together and exploit it. The days of perfectly matching are gone—vary the scales of each pattern to draw the eye and create balance. In addition, incorporate solids in complementing colors to create a more harmonious look. Our Ottanio Big Throw and Nite Quilt offer a range of colors to match any aesthetic and perfectly offset any pattern/s.

4) Heap on the Pillows!

Who doesn’t love pillows? A couple of shams, two standard pillows, and two or three throw pillows can add just the right amount of interest and comfort. The more pillows you use, the more you can also play around with color and shade gradations in bedding choices. Pillows also offer the perfect opportunity to introduce a bold new color or a statement-making pattern. Our Nap Bee Set Federe not only plays well with solids but works with a variety of different colorways.

Preview Osborne & Little’s 2019 Spring Collections

Textiles from Osborne & Little
Motown by Margo Selby.

Despite the frigid weather, with January comes the anticipation of all the design industry’s coming collection launches. A longtime favorite for homeowners and designers alike, Osborne & Little will launch their Spring 2019 collections on February 18th, with the exciting addition of a special new collection by textile artist, Margo Selby. The designer, who is known for her contemporary woven designs which include fabrics, rugs, and accessories produced by specialist mills and artisan weavers, does not disappoint with Memphis.

Selby’s new launch follows her aptly-named inaugural Ragtime collection for the brand, which abstractly pays tribute to the ragged rhythm of the musical style. Memphis, a bolder, brighter collection that references the musicians of the 50s and 60s, includes six striking patterns in a vibrant color palette (think cherry, teal, jade, and fuchsia), that enhances the luxuriousness of the cut velvet and wool fabrics. From Marvin, a tessellating pattern, to Motown, a geometric jacquard with perfectly contrasting colors, Selby’s collection has a lot of staying power.

Not to be outdone, Osborne & Little’s new in-house Spring 2019 collections include Morocco-inspired embroideries, rich velvets, and botanically-themed decorative wallpapers that also incorporate large-scale prints. Albemarle, a collection of tailored woven fabrics inspired by the streets, arcades, and squares of Mayfair, an upmarket area in London’s West End, adds a cozy, winter-inspired touch. Ariadne Velvets, a very different yet surprisingly chic collection of velvet textiles, features digitally-printed crosshatch brushstrokes in varying colors. Meanwhile, Folium, which consists of mostly botanical and tile-inspired wallpapers, lays claim to Tiger Leaf, a pattern that recalls the colors of Palm Springs, and the stunning Faenza Tile. The former references vintage tile-work and is edged with distressed gold leaf on either a stone, blue, or mint colorway. While these are just a few of many eye-catching new designs set to launch next month, the varying aesthetics offer wonderful design flexibility.

Delving into Artistic Tile with Founder Nancy Epstein

Marble mosaics.

Sail Fete, a polished stone mosaic.

Artistic Tile was founded in 1987 by its CEO Nancy Epstein. In the more than 30 years the company has been in business, they have flipped the paradigm of how we view and use tiles. From natural stones, to hard-to-find marbles, and modern classic mosaics, every style of design is within reach at Artistic Tile.

Below, Nancy Epstein shares behind-the-scenes insight on some of the most beautiful collections past and present and so much more.

DOWNTOWN: We love that color is back! What are some of your favorite new trends with regard to color and tiles?

Nancy Epstein, CEO and Founder of Artistic Tile: Although I don’t advocate following the “trends” in the tile & stone industry, I am happy to see the paradigm shifting, and that designers and homeowners are welcoming colored tile back into their designs. Using colorful stone in interiors is actually nothing new; it’s present throughout some of the world’s most historic and prestigious architecture. When I saw Cipollino marble in my bathroom at the newly renovated Gritti Palace, I was really excited. I hadn’t seen Cipollino used for years. It took a while to us to find it, but it was worth the effort. We have just finished a mosaic blend of Cipollino, Lilac, and Calacatta Rosa, that looks so fresh—it reminds me of gin and tonic on a warm summer day, so delicious and refreshing.

Mosaic marbles.
Weston reintroduces the missing color in geometric mosaics: Rosso Francia, Cipollino, and Rosa Portogall marbles.

DOWNTOWN: In terms of patterns, are there certain design periods you are seeing a resurgence of? Which ones if so, and what do you love about them?

Nancy Epstein: I am not seeing an emergence of any periods in particular. We have always been drawn to Art Deco and Nouveau for organic shapes, and the Cosmati style, as seen on the floors in San Marco for Geometrics, along with the patterns of the ancient Romans.

DOWNTOWN: Tell me about Grand Gatsby (below)! We are obsessed with how the completely cool this design concept is—the tiles elevate the space.

Nancy Epstein: Design: Our pattern Grand Gatsby is actually inspired by an Art Nouveau-style pot I saw in a French museum over ten years ago, that I thought would somehow or another work out into a beautiful tile. I took photos of it (I accumulate a lot of pictures during my travels), and every year or so I revisit my collection of photos, each time with a new perspective. The Parisian pot was one reference I kept coming back to.

The Grand Gatsby mosaic features dramatic geometry and an Art Deco influence.

Color: The reason we’re using multiple colors is because we really like the fact that these colors have come back into our lives, but in this case, the colors are used as accents, rooted in a very traditional Arabescato marble. This way, the pattern has color, but it’s neutral at the same time. And since it has multiple accent colors, you’re not locked into using a single color for the rest of your space.

DOWNTOWN: What is one of your current favorite patterns and why?

Nancy Epstein: Our Sinuous mosaic—it’s classic, it’s forever, it’s stunning, it’s beautiful, it’s decorative, it’s field, it’s all those things wrapped into one. You can never have too much of it. It’s on my bedroom, bathroom and home office floors. I love the way it glimmers in the sunlight. And I love how easy it is to keep clean. I enjoy owning my products, rather than them owning me. My busy schedule and lifestyle of constantly entertaining requires me to have low maintenance products. I never want to tell my grandchildren to be careful in my home; I want them to be able to run around and enjoy themselves.

DOWNTOWN: What would you like homeowners and designers to understand about how to transform a room with tiles?

Nancy Epstein: Tile can do more than just transform a room—it can transform you and your family’s lives and overall well-being. Choosing tile over other surface materials has many benefits that not every homeowner is aware of. First and foremost, natural stone tile endows a space with a timeless aesthetic that can be enjoyed for generations. You won’t have to worry about natural stone fading out of fashion or needing an expensive replacement every 15 to 20 years. Your stone will last forever, in fact, the more it is used, the more beautiful its patina becomes.

lavender marble mosaics
Artistic Tile.

It also promotes a healthier home. Because tile is anti-microbial, it’s more hygienic than other surface materials like carpet, which can trap allergens, smoke, and other pollutants. Tile and well-sealed stone can prevent wet areas from developing mold or mildew, and in dry areas, it can protect floors and counters from life’s inevitable spills. Many don’t consider using tile on their ceilings, but doing so can prevent mold, as well as beautify the space with a look that recalls the elegant styling of castles and cathedrals.

Tile is also low maintenance: Because a sealed tile surface keeps water, soap, and other liquids close to the surface, it facilitates in easy clean-up.

Artistic Tile.
Primal Caiman Palm tiles.

When planning a design or remodel, I’ve always said: design for longevity. Choose tile that you resonate with and that you’re sure you’re going to love for the next twenty years or more, because that’s at least how long it should last you. The installation of tile and stone is expensive. Install what you love. Design for inheritability.

Choose tile that creates the atmosphere you want to come home to, and that your family and guests can enjoy. It should be expressive of your taste and lifestyle, rather than what’s trending at the time. If you buy tile solely based on what’s popular now, you may regret it five years down the road, when the style starts to look dated.

DOWNTOWN: What is one of the most unusual yet stunning application of tiles you have ever encountered?

Nancy Epstein: Aesthetically, the mosaics of Victor Horta sing to my heart. I especially love the Tassels Hotel in Brussels.

But when it comes to application, although the tiles used by Gustovino are not so “special”, his use of tiles on vaulted ceilings is outrageously gorgeous.

DOWNTOWN: We love how fashion influences design and vice versa. Are there any current collections you can recall that were heavily influenced by the runway. If so, which ones?

Nancy Epstein: I don’t recall any of our collections that were influenced by the runway. But I can recall the runway being influenced by our collections.

Jazz Glass Treble Custom Blend.

DOWNTOWN: How long ago did you found Artistic Tile? How do you manage to keep world of tile so interesting and fresh?

Artistic Tile: Artistic Tile was founded in 1987. It was a business venture that first began in a small cabinetry showroom in Tenafly, N.J., which Founder and CEO, Nancy Epstein, transformed into a larger Kitchen & Bath business by introducing decorative plumbing, and later, tile, and natural stone. Over the course of 30 years, Artistic Tile grew to include 8 branded retail showrooms in major metro areas across the country, a 25,000-square-foot slab gallery just outside of NYC, and a network of over 200 dealers (retail partners) nationwide. Today, Nancy Epstein is still the company’s CEO, and is joined by her sons, Vice President, Zachary Epstein, and VP of Marketing, Michael Epstein; and by her cousins, Joshua Levinson, Wholesale President, and Lauren Cherkas, Retail President.

Sail Fete Artistic Tile.

We’re driven by passion and a purpose, to make the world a more beautiful place, with innovative luxury tile, and to give back to causes we deeply care about. Our company’s core value of generosity is expressed in our philanthropic endeavors and donations to charitable organizations worldwide.

Beyond our drive, I’ve always loved world history, and I relish traveling the world, exploring historic sites and discovering skilled local artisans. Most of our proprietary patterns are born from these travels, where I find inspiration in everything from grandiose palaces to the remaining decorative details of ancient ruins. But we don’t exclusively look for inspiration in architecture —we also look to fabric, jewelry, and emerging motifs. In fact, we look to everything but tile to inspire our tile designs!

DOWNTOWN: What would be your best guess as to how many tile collections Artist Tile carries?

Nancy Epstein: About 50 collections across all materials, however, the majority of our products aren’t marketed as collections. They’re sold as individual patterns available in multiple colorways.

Blue ombre tiles.
Artistic Tile.

DOWNTOWN: If you could convince a client to go big with tile in one spot in their home, where would it be and why?

Nancy Epstein: It really depends on the client’s lifestyle, their values, and where they’ll spend the most time. For most, the most important place to invest in is the master bedroom and bathroom, as they are the most personal, they are spaces that you will use every day, and where you will spend time renewing and getting ready in. The design should be flawlessly efficient, with ample space and storage for products. The surfaces should all be tiled so that they’re durable, safe, and easy to keep clean in a room that will endure moisture, humidity, and hot hair appliances. The master bed and bath are the best rooms in the home to install a decorative mosaic on the floor, which can dramatically beautify and elevate the space.

DOWNTOWN: What can homeowners and designers expect from Artistic Tile?

Artistic Tile

Nancy Epstein: High quality. Products of permanence. Innovative designs. Highly customizable products. Timeless elegance rooted in antiquity. Knowledgeable and friendly design- minded sales staff.

DOWNTOWN: If you could outfit any room in your house with one tile, what would it be, which room would it be, and where would you place the tile?

Nancy Epstein: I already have, my master bedroom, bathroom, and home office, but if I were to add more, I would turn my entire living room floor into tile, and I would use our Horta pattern. The ceiling in my living room already has dropped onyx panels, supported by Mahogany beams, and is lit from above. However, removing my husband’s Czech glass  bar to replace our floors is an obstacle that I am not likely to able to surpass.

Edward Fields’ New Collection of Luxury Flooring, “On-the-Fringe,” Reinvents an Old Art Form

Since 1935, Edward Fields has captured the imagination of designophiles around the world with an ever-growing collection of luxury floor coverings. The latest collection, “On-the-Fringe,” began as a rediscovery of the original, highly-skilled, hand-tufted craft that formed at the company’s inception. What resulted was a modern interpretation of captivating archival works. I sat down with the masterminds behind the collection, Design Director Juliana Polastri, and Senior Collection Designer Ariana Massouh, of Edward Fields, to find out just a bit more about what inspired the bold, chromatic, handcrafted designs from “On-the-Fringe.”

DOWNTOWN: What brought about the idea of reinventing Edward Fields’ archival designs?

Archival Design: Allegory.

Juliana Polastri: Edward Fields has an extraordinarily rich archive that dates back several decades, and we find endless inspiration each time we revisit it.

DOWNTOWN: Tell us about the collection’s name, “On-the-Fringe”: What inspired it?

Ariana Massouh: In keeping with the brand’s spirit, we chose a play on words inspired by the innovative use of fringes in this collection.

DOWNTOWN: How many designs make up the collection and how would you describe them?

Ariana Massouh: There are eleven compositional designs, and one repeating design in the collection (“Primitif”), for a total of twelve. The designs are abstract geometrics with bold, graphic shapes.

Allegory.

DOWNTOWN: How did you improve upon the designs. What new methods were you able to implement to add more depth to the archival prints?

Juliana Polastri: We curated this selection from patterns created between the 1960s and the 1980s. We updated them by utilizing new techniques with loose movable threads and voided canvases.

DOWNTOWN: What was the process like in looking through the archives? How did you choose which patterns you wanted to focus on?

Juliana Polastri: Choosing pieces from our archive is one of the most exciting aspects of the process. It is a truly collaborative experience between design and our experienced sales force. It’s a privilege to have access to so many timeless historical pieces. We chose pieces that we knew could be elevated with the fringe techniques that we aimed to utilize.

DOWNTOWN: What are your favorite patterns, and why?

Metropolis.

Ariana Massouh: My favorite changes by the day! Today it is“Emergence” – the symmetry and delicacy of the lines in the original always draws me in, and we loved challenging the symmetry in the updated version by varying the pile heights of the luxurious silks, and adding the varied lengths of fringes. We added the touches of silver metallic thread in ground for a little added sparkle.

Juliana Polastri: It is always so hard to choose just one favorite. Mine is “Rebound” – the resolution of the composition is perfection! The way that our artisans masterfully tufted the concentric lines is admirable and gives the illusion of infinity.

DOWNTOWN: I am little bit obsessed with Allegory. If you could place this design anywhere, where would it be?

Ariana Massouh: We too are obsessed with Allegory. We were thrilled after seeing it surrounded by floor-to-ceiling window views of the city when we shot our catalogue in the Chelsea gallery district. We utilized vintage mid-century furniture pieces paired with contemporary art pieces.

DOWNTOWN: Do you see yourselves collaborating on another project? If so, what’s next?

Twilight Haze.

Juliana Polastri: Ariana and I are fortunate enough to work together on every collection development project, so there is a lot more to come! In February, we are very excited to launch a hand-knotted collection entitled “Flourish” for Tai Ping, with original floral photography inspired rugs.

DOWNTOWN:  What is it like working on a collection for Edward Fields?

Ariana Massouh: It is an absolute honor to be entrusted with one of the most iconic American design brands of the last century. We work with a passionate team that truly enjoys collaborating with our clients in such a large spectrum of residential, aviation, and yacht projects.
