The Cutest Dog Costumes in All NYC, Ranked

Barktoberfest 2019 is over; everybody won. Well, we all got to see adorable dogs in great costumes, but only some of those dogs won prizes. Over the course of the evening, ten top dogs won nine prizes for their puppy parents. It was a tough competition, but it wasn’t because of the rain; our judges had to choose between more participants than ever before! More than 80 pups and 200 people showed up for Downtown’s biggest Barktoberfest event.

The Event

On October 29th, hundreds of pups and people descended on the Seaport at Pier 17 for Barktoberfest, a canine costume party celebration. The event was hosted by Downtown Magazine and POOCHI NYC. Downtown Magazine’s Pawblisher Barclay publishes his own column in the magazine. POOCHI NYC is a professional dog-walking service offering memberships to NYC Pawrents with pooches at home.

The event featured snacks, “BarkTinis,” and more, including snacks from Industry Kitchen, Grandaisy Bakery, and Insomnia Cookies.

Sponsors included: Downtown Magazine, POOCHI NYC, Seaport District NYC, Social Tees Animal Rescue, Four Seasons, SYNLawn, BARK, Frédéric Fekkai, WellPup, Worth Street Veterinary Center, Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams, Pet Plate, Tribeca Grill, Zoo Snoods, and Insomnia Cookies.

The Competition

A group of seven expert judges chose winners for 6 categories and three runners up, with prizes for all.

The Judges:

Saul Scherl Executive Vice President Howard Hughes Corp

“Elizabeth Velez Developer Velez Organization

Mimi Fisher Stylist

“Dr. DiPolo” Worth Street Vet

“Kiana Martinez Mitchel Gold Bob Williams

The Winners

We know this is why you’re really here: the puppy pictures. We don’t blame you.

Our Runners Pup:

Runners up received a one-year subscription to Downtown Magazine. For one year, they will able to learn about all of the cool stuff happening downtown, and their furry friends can learn about local doggie do’s with Barclay’s Spot.

Our first runner up was dressed as General Leia, our favorite Disney princess.

7th Place

Our 7th place winners were a tag-team, a pair of partners. These army pups won their owner a gift basket from Eatily.

6th Place

This went to a pair of owners, and one adorable infomercial of a pup. This chia pet won its owners a trip to the Fabio Doti Salon on Wall Street.

This pet really grew on our judges.

5th Place

This next pup was a Prime choice for 5th place. This Amazon Prime Pup won our hearts, as well as a Gift Certificate for Worth Street Veterinary Center.

This dog delivers joy to your heart in two days or less.

4th Place

This princely participant won his owner a hair makeover from Fredric Fekkai with David Cotteblanche.

3rd Place

Our third-place winner was also our “funniest costume.” It makes a lot of sense–this pup is a real joker. Pepper won himself a beautiful new dog bed from MGBW.

2nd Place

Our second-place winner is also competing in another contest, a heated political bout that won this dog “Best Headline-of-the-Day” costume. Bernie Sanders himself came down to the competition, looking a little furrier than usual, to collect a dinner for four at the Tribeca Grill.

1st Prize

First prize went to a repeat pup. Last year’s winner (she was a fortune teller) returned as a grandma. If you think the costume is impressive, you should have seen her walk her walker on her hind legs. This walker-walking pup’s parent will walk away with an overnight stay at the Four Seasons.

Some Other Highlights

New York Comic Con: Why Bother?

McThor. Accompanied by “Agent Coldstone” (off-camera).

On the third day of New York Comic Con, Kyle Hill interviewed celebrity creator Adam Savage for an audience of thousands. Savage is famous for his sometimes-extravagant cosplays (dressing up as a beloved character) and inventions, and an audience member asked him about his favorite cosplay of all time. Savage said that he didn’t have a favorite, but that there was one kind that made him especially happy. He loved last-minute cosplays: a jacket with a well-known logo, or a signature tie cut out of paper and taped to a shirt. That small effort, he says, means that they chose to engage, to share and join in the celebration.

Fandom is a team sport: you can’t do it alone. But it’s a sport where you don’t always know who is on your team. You could work with Astrid in accounting for five years and you won’t know that she ALSO has every season of your favorite show on special edition blue-ray unless you see a picture or figure on her desk.

So yes, Comic Con is about seeing the first episode of the fourth season of your favorite anime, or holding back tears while your favorite author signs your copy of her book, but it’s really about community. It’s about seeing that you’re not alone and then sharing your passions. It always has been.

The first acknowledged intercity fan convention was Philcon, or the Philadelphia Science Fiction Conference, in 1936. It was small–about 9 people–and mostly consisted of talking about science fiction while playing craps. Still, it was the culmination of years of pen-and-paper interactions in letters and in the personal pages of magazines like Weird Tales. HP Lovecraft, one of the authors who grew out of this community, was notorious for his extensive correspondence through letters and submissions to the personal pages of magazines. Some of his letters were said to be novella-length.

These fans rarely had anything in common outside of science fiction–Lovecraft, an outspoken bigot and anti-semite, famously softened his edge as he communicated with fans of different races, religions, and ethnicities. Through the personal pages, fans managed to find each other and start small clubs, meeting to discuss stories and even create some new ones. Philcon was the result of that, as well as a beginning. Three years after the first Philcon, science fiction fans founded Worldcon–the World Science Fiction Convention–which has been held almost every year since 1939.

The explosion of new media content in the last couple of decades has opened that fan culture up to a broader audience, causing some of these Cons to swell to bursting. But it has also increased isolation outside of Con culture. Sure, your officemates will probably be excited to talk about the new Avengers movie, but what about your undying passion for Yuri On Ice? Who has read Rebecca Roanhorse’s book Trail of Lightning? Being a lone fan can be an isolating experience.

That’s why almost everything you can do at a Con comes with a question: do you like this thing the way I do? Are you going to this panel? This fan meetup? Do you recognize my cosplay? It’s a way to connect; to find camaraderie. It’s a little girl dressed as Jyn Erso going up to everyone dressed as Princess Leia to give her the plans for the Death Star. It’s why Adam Savage is so excited that a fan decided, even at the last minute, to share and contribute. “I see you,” it says, “and I think it was awesome too.”

Léman Manhattan’s Third Annual Halloween Bash

Last weekend, Léman Manhattan Preparatory School hosted its third annual Halloween Bash.

The spooktacular event took place in the historic Broad St Ballroom at 41 Broad Street, and welcomed children ages infant through 3rd grade along with their parents.

There was no shortage of original costumes, creativeness, and fun! We saw fairies, Pokémons, a lion family and many more incredible costumes throughout the day.

The Halloween Bash also featured pumpkin decorating (because we all know, it’s not Halloween without pumpkins!), spooky treats (of course!), monster manicures (nailed it!), face painting and a costume parade.

The children could get active by trying out martial arts with Square Circle New York, fitness and tumbling with PopFit Kids, explore science experiments with Brooklyn Robot Foundry, as well as a free exploration with The Little Gym, and become spellbound by a magic show and live musical performance by Carnegie Hall artists.

Needless to say, we’ve already got a bunch of inspiration for our Halloween outfits next year!

Trend Report Tuesday: 2017 Tony Awards’ Looks

The 71st Tony Awards premiered Sunday, June 11th and took place at Radio City Music Hall here in Manhattan, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. The Tony Award recognizes achievements on Broadway. Although there were mixed emotions regarding the performance from the host, Kevin Spacey, this show was full of outstanding talent.

Along with the talent in the crowd, the fashion was phenomenal.
