Cosmetics Conferences Come to NYC

This March brings two of New York City’s biggest beauty shows to the Javits Center. From the 8th through the 10th, the International Esthetics, Cosmetics, & Spa Conference will allow industry professionals to come face to face with over 300 of the industry’s most critically acclaimed brands and suppliers. At the same time, The Beauty Experience New York will bring those same professionals together as an industry.

Produced by Questex and presented by American Spa, the International Esthetics, Cosmetics and Spa Conference (IECSC) New York is co-located with The Beauty Experience New York – the largest and longest-running professional beauty event in the country. Both shows are for professionals only and reach a wide cross-section of participants from beauty and spa product manufacturers and distributors to salon and spa owners and managers, hairstylists, hair colorists, estheticians, makeup artists, nail technicians, dermatologists, and massage therapists.

“As IECSC continues to grow, we’re so grateful for the sponsors who have played such an important role in our success over the last 30 years,” said Kathy Gruttadauria, Show Director for IECSC events. “We are constantly searching for new and enticing ways to enhance the conference, and this year we are excited to be expanding on some of our most popular spaces to stay ahead of trends such as technology and CBD in the spa and wellness industry.”

IECSC has also just announced its sponsor list, including Osmosis, Care Credit, Celluma, LightStim, Highlite the Korean Pavilion, Eminence, Repêchage, Farmhouse Fresh, Erchonia, The Good Patch, Starpil Wax, Silverfox Health & Beauty Inc., ProCell, Sorella, and many more!

My Top Shelf

In the fashion of the millennial-favorite beauty blog, Into the Gloss, here is Downtown’s own edition of Top Shelf: an insight into my self-care routine and the contents of my beauty cabinet. As an intern here at Downtown, as well as a college student and avid traveler, taking time each day to take care of myself physically is vital for my mental and physical health.

Skincare:

The lengthiest part of my routine lies in skincare rather than makeup. Growing up with temperate California weather, breakouts were rare for me, but once I went off to college and experienced the harsh weather that comes with Midwestern winters, on top of heightened stress from school and work, I realized I needed to put more effort into taking care of my skin.

Starting with cleansers, it took me quite a while to find one that did what I needed it to for my fairly sensitive combination skin, but the Greek beauty company Korres came to my rescue. Their Foaming Cream Cleanser is gentle and made with natural ingredients, and leaves my face a clean canvas at the beginning of every day. At night, I use Knours Your Only Cleanser, because it doubles as a cleanser and a more delicate way to remove makeup without the harsh chemicals that come with makeup remover wipes.

In the morning and at night, I follow cleansing with serums, most often the Sorella Apothecary Lightening Serum. It works well to calm redness, and smooth and brighten my skin, which is necessary since my skin is so fair, and the tropical lemon-y smell is a huge plus. The Sunday Riley Autocorrect Eye Cream is another staple product that I use both morning and night; it helps with puffiness and is also cool and refreshing. I usually follow this with Glossier’s Zit Stick spot treatment when needed. It’s one of my favorite tools in my makeup bag because you can layer makeup over it.

I have several moisturizers that I switch off using, the first being the Knours Skin Meditation Gel. I cannot rave about this product enough. It has made my skin insanely soft, and it smells like you’re rubbing essential oils on your face, so it’s calming to put on (which I do usually three times per day). I also love Korres’ 24 Hour Vitamin C moisturizer and their night time moisturizer sleeping mask.

I always follow this up with Carter + Janes Everything Oil, which, as the name states, is everything. It does it all, smoothing, hydrating, calming, etc. and sometimes when I don’t have time for the whole routine, I just use a few drops of it and I’m ready to go.

For my hair and scalp health, I use a lot of dry shampoo, namely Design.me’s product. Time is a luxury, and dry shampoo saves me a lot of it!

Makeup:

As far as makeup goes, I’ve never worn much, and usually stick to Glossier’s minimalist products like the Stretch Concealer, Lash Slick, Cloud Paint, and Boy Brow.

When I want to make my look more fun and creative, I turn to eyeshadow for my pop of color. I love using hot pinks and neons right now, with palettes like Obaa Beauty’s “Eye Am”… or the BH Cosmetics‘ “Take Me Back to Brazil” palette. I love experimenting with just adding fun colors to a rather minimal makeup look, so I can stick to the almost-bare face look that makes me feel myself while also doing something more colorful and creative.

Get Your Back in Order at NYC’s Eve Spa

When it comes to beauty, we tend to focus on the things we can see. Facial wrinkles, dry legs, arms that got a little too sun-kissed on your last vacation – what pops up in the mirror is generally the first thing we address. But what about our backs? The skin on your back is just as vulnerable to age and the elements as the rest of your body, and NYC’s Eve Spa is offering a new, multi-faceted approach to getting your back on track.

NYC Eva Spa Nail Salon

The “Back in Order” treatment option from Downtown NYC’s Eve Spa utilizes a potent combination of two different exfoliants to refresh, nourish and renew the skin on your upper and lower back. The application of AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) works on the surface of your skin to reduce visible wrinkles and lines, while BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids) penetrate your pores to address the oil, dead skin and other unpleasant compounds that can work their way under our skin’s surface. Their staff of estheticians recommends this hour-long treatment be performed in a series, to achieve the best results.

NYC Eve Spa Bed

If your skin care routine has been leaving your back by the wayside, ask about the Back in Order treatment the next time you pop into NYC’s Eve Spa for a waxing, facial or manicure. Learn more about their range of treatments on their website, and stay in the loop on the latest in skin care and cosmetics by visiting our Beauty Cabinet.

11 Must-Try Items For St. Patrick’s Day 2017

If you are planning on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, this is certainly no shortage of great options for exciting events out there. But there’s more to a successful St. Patrick’s Day than a few pints of Guinness. In turn, Downtown has compiled a list of items worth trying so you can have a good time all the time this Friday, Mar. 17.

1) Some fine cold brew coffee via Dripo

If your St. Patty’s Day is going to include a pub crawl, you’re going to need some stamina to make it through the day. What better source of on-the-go stamina is there than coffee? Dripo is a travel cold brew system that can be used at home, the office, or anywhere you have some space to move your arms. In one section you add ice and water, in the middle of Dripo, you add your ground coffee and a filter. The water drips through the coffee layer into a tumbler at the bottom and in about two hours a cup of cold brew is ready. Incredible.

2) Nail polish from Kendra Scott

Kendra Scott designed her first collection of jewelry in 2002. Now, she is the namesake of a billion-dollar brand which also creates home decor and wonderful wedding gifts. The Kendra Scott brand offers nail lacquers, including a few shades of green, right in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

3) Makeup from Smith & Cult

Smith & Cult Beauty Ambassador Jessica Tong created the nail look at the recent NYFW show of Ulla Johnson, which included the Nail Lacquer In Ghost Edit. But the Smith & Cult brand — as founded by co-founded by Hard Candy’s Dineh Mohajer — is also known for its lipgloss and eye makeup. More green coloring to go around!

4) Shinesty Suits

Shinesty is known for its novelty wear, which covers almost every occasional, holiday and circumstance you can think of. Their St. Patrick’s Day-themed selections are varied and excellent, offering options with and without clovers. Fun fact: I am getting married next week in a Shinesty suit. I am also likely to spend the 4th Of July in some their threads.

5) Clinique Fresh Pressed 7-Day System with Pure Vitamin C

As St. Patrick’s Day falls into the winter season, some cold air is to be expected. Fortunately, the new Fresh Pressed System from Clinique is designed as a daily supplement to visibly rejuvenate skin from the outside. In addition, its specialized stay-fresh packaging isolates the pure Vitamin C until activation, maintaining its freshness and full power for remarkable results as little as seven days.

6) The Eucalyptus Aloe Collection from H2O+

Looking for some green in your skincare and beauty regimens? H2O+’s new Eucalyptus Aloe Collection is green in terms of its packaging, the plants used to make the products, and the environmental consciousness of its production. Its body wash absolutely cleanses and refreshes as promised.

7) The Yes To Cucumbers Collection from Yes To

Yes To is known to incorporate vegetables into its products. The Yes To Cucumbers collection includes cleansing water, paper masks, eye kits, makeup removing pads, facial wipes, moisturizer, daily gel cleanser, hydrating mist, night cream, and sunscreen. So no matter the temperature or time of day, Yes To has some healthy greens available for you.

8) Call Time Styling Primer by IGK

IGK products are known to be free of parabens, sulfates, petroleum and gluten, while also cruelty-free, vegetarian and providing UV and heat protection. Its new Call Time Styling Primer — bright green in its packaging — is full of coconut oil and suitable for all hair types. It also contains the IGK Miami scent, which includes notes of guava, coconut water, pink lotus, midnight violet and vanilla.

9) Action Painting by The Creation

U.K. mod-rockers The Creation had a few charting singles before disbanding in 1968. To get psyched up for a St. Patty’s outing, why not start off with “Makin’ Time,” which Wes Anderson re-popularized via the film Rushmore? Action Painting is an impressive deluxe re-issue of The Creation’s catalog, now available via The Numero Group.

10) Michael Schenker Fest “Live” Tokyo by Michael Schenker

If hard rock is more suitable to getting ready for a Mar. 17 celebration, then consider checking out the latest from Scorpions, UFO and M.S.G. guitarist Michael Schenker. Michael Schenker Fest finds the German guitar legend at the center of his namesake live Japanese concert festival. Notable vocalists Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet and Robin McAuley reunite with Schenker to play the classics from the Michael Schenker catalog, which can be enjoyed via the CD, DVD, blu-ray and digital download formats as of Mar. 24.

11) Dr. Teal’s Pure Epsom Salt Soaking Solution

After a long day of partying on St. Patrick’s Day, the best way to unwind may be with a warm, comfortable bath. One brand to consider for that is Dr. Teal’s, as known for its Epsom Salt Soaks and Foaming Baths. Dr. Teal’s bath products hydrate and heal while providing a pleasant fragrance. Its Restore & Replenish Pink Himalayan Mineral Soak & Foaming Bath alone replenishes body with 84 essential minerals for all over body restoration.

How Nick Barose & Kiehl’s got “Lion” actress Priyanka Bose ready for the Oscars

Priyanka Bose
Priyanka Bose

As told by Nick Barose…

INSPIRATION

“For the Oscars, we wanted to be classic and feminine, colorful yet timeless, I wanted to play off the beautiful blue, aqua and purple tone of her Vivienne Westwood dress against her gorgeous bronze skin. I drew inspirations from classic Hollywood icon, glamour girl Rita Hayworth, and Bollywood silent film star Seeta Devi. Priyanka has gorgeous dark eyes; they’re so animated and can look extra dramatic with some colors and even when paired with a pop of color on the lips, too. Dark skin with dark hair and eyes like Priyanka’s can carry more colors– it won’t clash.”

SKINCARE

I prepped her skin first, to add extra hydration, and plumped it up with Kiehl’s Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Masque. I used Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore Refining Tonic to help control shine and oil on her t-zone, so there would be no need to touch her up too much throughout the night, and then I moisturized with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream. To hydrate and prepare her eyes for makeup, I applied Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado, under the eyes to let it absorb. Then, I primed the skin with Kiehl’s Micro-Blur Skin Perfector. After the gel cream absorbed into skin, I blotted away the excess and smoothed the Skin Perfector over it to give her skin an extra smooth finish and help her last longer. Finally, I prepped her lips with Kiehl’s Facial Fuel No-Shine Moisturizing Lip Balm to add hydration and create perfect shine-free canvas for lipstick.

COMPLEXION:

For foundation, I used IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Compact™ with SPF 50+ in Rich. I applied it with a sponge, so I could layer it for more coverage and thinned it out in certain areas to show off her skin and look camera-ready. Apply with sponge and you can layer it for more coverage or thinning it out in certain areas to also show off skin glow and look camera-ready. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Illumination™ Anti-Aging Concealer in Tan brightened her under eyes. I used IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores™ Pressed Powder to set the foundation and tone down shine on her T-Zone, and used IT Cosmetics Sunshine in a Compact™ in Warmth to warm up the skin and gently sculpt her face, brushing around the perimeter of her face, center of the neck, and the side of her nose.

I applied IT Cosmetics Ombré Radiance Blush™ in Sugar Plum on the apples of cheeks for a bit of a rosy flush, and then added highlights with IT Cosmetics Hello Light™ Anti-Aging Powder Luminizer in Bella Brilliance.

EYES:

I filled in and shaped her brows with IT Cosmetics BROW POWER™ Super Skinny in Dark Brown. I drew a classic wing with IT Cosmetics No Tug Anti-Aging WaterProof Eyeliner in Brown and used IT Cosmetics Naturally Pretty™ Matte Luxe Transforming Eyeshadow Palette for color on the lids. I finished with IT Cosmetics Superhero™ Mascara, with two coats on top and one coat on the bottom lashes.

LIPS:

On lips, we went for a pop of color, without it being loud so it doesn’t complete with her dress. An earthy shade of red is great because it pops, and there’s a bit of bronze tone to it to make it tie in with a bit of coppery tone in the dress. I used IT Cosmetics Your Lips But Better™ All-Day Waterproof Lip Liner Stain in Perfect Red, and IT Cosmetics Blurred Lines™ Smooth-Fill Lipstick in Brave.

BODY:

To add a sun-kissed glow to her shoulders, arms and legs, I rubbed on Kiehl’s Creme de Corps, blotted off excess and then dusted IT Cosmetics Hello Light™ Anti-Aging Powder Luminizer in Bella Brilliance on top.
