2 Must-Try Eats For Earth Day 2017

Earth Day 2017 is almost here, but environmentally-minded food and drink options can be yours year-round. To get you in the spirit for Apr. 22, here are two very interesting sustainable options — one for eating and one for drinking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEpYo8LsXGY

  1. Coffee Flour

Every year, billions of pounds of coffee cherry fruit — a byproduct of coffee production — are discarded or, to a lesser extent, composted into fertilizer. Rather than leaving these cherries to rot in heaps or pollute local rivers, Coffee Flour converts them into a nutrient-dense and distinctly flavorful culinary ingredient that is high in fiber, protein, potassium, calcium, and iron. Coffee Flour’s business model also provides supplemental income for smallholder farmers and creates additional jobs at local coffee mills, turning what was once a botanical pollutant and waste product into an economic boost to coffee-growing communities around the globe.

In addition to being highly-sustainable, the flour is also a dynamic, easy-to-use cooking ingredient. Its mild, earthy flavor makes it a subtle yet nutritionally potent addition to many of the foods we know and love, from brownies and granola to sauces and pizza. Coffee Flour is currently available for purchase online at Marx Pantry and Nuts.com, and in-store at select Sprouts Farmers Markets.

          2. Elmhurst Milked

Once a historic family-run American dairy, Elmhurst Milked recently shifted its focus from dairy milk to nutmilk to help lead the plant-based revolution. The innovative company utilizes a patented cold milling process called ‘milking’ to craft non-dairy milks that combine the full nutritional content of whole nuts with a superior, creamy texture and full flavor. Elmhurst Milked’s nutmilks are made from whole raw nuts, never pre-processed pastes, and boast up to four times the nut content of other leading brands.

Available in Almond, Walnut, Hazelnut and Cashew varieties, Elmhurst Milked’s products contain none of the industrial stabilizers, whiteners, emulsifiers or gums typical of other leading nutmilks and are certified non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, dairy-free, lactose-free, and kosher. Elmhurst Milked’s nutmilks can be enjoyed on their own as high-protein, low-sugar beverages or used as replacements for dairy milk in cooking. Their high protein content and foaming properties also make them an excellent match for cappuccinos, lattés and other espresso drinks. Elmhurst Milked’s nutmilks are currently available at select Publix throughout the Southeastern United States and will soon be available for nationwide shipping on Elmhurst Milked’s website.

Lavazza’s Spring-Infused Drinks

As the spring graces us with its good weather, Lavazza shares with us three of their favorite recipes for this season. The affogato, served at NYC’s iconic Eataly, along with two DIY drinks, can satisfy you any time of the day.

Looking to spice things up with a bit of liquor? Make yourself a Lavazza Coffeetail No. 51. This special drink mixes our need for caffeine with our love for alcohol.

Ingredients:

  • 3 parts ginger ale
  • 2 parts cold brew coffee concentrate
  • 2/3 part vodka
  • Splash of Grand Marnier
  • Splash of simple syrup
  • Sliced lemon, orange and cucumber
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Fresh mint

Method:

  • Fill a 12 oz. glass with ice
  • In a shaker, combine cold brew, Grand Marnier, vodka and syrup; pour over the ice
  • Top with ginger ale
  • Decorate with wheel or slices of orange and/or a lemon
  • Skewer cherries and cucumber wedge
  • Garnish with mint

Feeling fruity? Make a mid-day drink with Lavazza’s Strawberry and Meringue Smoothie.

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 ice cubes
  • ½ cup vanilla ice cream
  • 2 strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons espresso
  • 2.5 tablespoons whipped cream
  • 0.3 oz meringue
  • To garnish: 0.1 oz meringue and 1 teaspoon strawberry syrup

Method:

  • Prepare a short espresso.
  • Place the ice directly into the mixer, along with the ice cream, fresh strawberries, and espresso
  • Mix at high speed: the smoothie be thick, and not get too liquid. To reach the ideal consistency, stop the mixer every so often and stir the smoothie with a spoon to avoid lumps.
  • Crush the meringue and stir it into the smoothie with a long spoon.

Or maybe you just need a morning boost. If so, make yourself Lavazza’s iconic affogato. Espresso to wake you up with a scoop of ice cream to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Ingredients:

  • 1 scoop vanilla or hazelnut gelato
  • ¼ cup hot Lavazza espresso
  • Optional: ¼ cup hazelnut liqueur

Method:

  • Scoop the gelato into a serving bowl, glass, or coffee cup
  • Stir the hot espresso and hazelnut liqueur (if using) together
  • Pour the mixture over the gelato
  • Serve immediately

These springtime recipes featuring a jolt of caffeine in each are the perfect way to welcome this warm weather. Simple ingredients and easy to make, there is no excuse not to try these innovative drinks.

The Grocery is the exclusive New York retailer of Bamford organic beauty products and sells custom and collaborative pieces such as Hill House Home linens, Alison Lou jewelry, Prabal Gurung t-shirts, Edie Parker clutches, and more. In lieu of traditional shopping carts, customers will carry items in French market baskets designed by La Ligne. Fresh flowers by Petal By Pedal, available in arrangements and by the stem, line the custom-designed floating marble shelves and feature seasonal New York grown blooms. The offerings are rounded out by a rotating, one-wall shop-in-shop of unique design and homeware items, featuring both new and vintage objects and a library of periodicals including Luncheon, Alla Carta, The Gourmand, World Of Interiors, Apartamento, and Holiday.

Designed by Andre Mellone of Studio Mellone (whose past retail projects include work for Thom Browne and Jason Wu) in collaboration with Kyle Hotchkiss Carone, Clover Grocery’s stylish interiors are partly inspired by the beauty and charm of European patisseries and food halls of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Floor-to-ceiling curved Mahogany shelving lines the perimeter of the clean space, punctuated by thick, rounded grey bardiglio marble counters designed to showcase the shop’s offerings. A central, custom market table by day doubles as a dining table by night, perfectly suited for intimate dinners after the shop closes. A softly-lit lay light ceiling fixture hangs above Douglas Fir floors, bringing the design elements together and warming the space at all hours.

Clover Grocery is open 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily. For more information on Clover Grocery, please visit www.clovergrocery.com or call 212-255-5383.

11 Must-Try Items For St. Patrick’s Day 2017

If you are planning on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, this is certainly no shortage of great options for exciting events out there. But there’s more to a successful St. Patrick’s Day than a few pints of Guinness. In turn, Downtown has compiled a list of items worth trying so you can have a good time all the time this Friday, Mar. 17.

1) Some fine cold brew coffee via Dripo

If your St. Patty’s Day is going to include a pub crawl, you’re going to need some stamina to make it through the day. What better source of on-the-go stamina is there than coffee? Dripo is a travel cold brew system that can be used at home, the office, or anywhere you have some space to move your arms. In one section you add ice and water, in the middle of Dripo, you add your ground coffee and a filter. The water drips through the coffee layer into a tumbler at the bottom and in about two hours a cup of cold brew is ready. Incredible.

2) Nail polish from Kendra Scott

Kendra Scott designed her first collection of jewelry in 2002. Now, she is the namesake of a billion-dollar brand which also creates home decor and wonderful wedding gifts. The Kendra Scott brand offers nail lacquers, including a few shades of green, right in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

3) Makeup from Smith & Cult

Smith & Cult Beauty Ambassador Jessica Tong created the nail look at the recent NYFW show of Ulla Johnson, which included the Nail Lacquer In Ghost Edit. But the Smith & Cult brand — as founded by co-founded by Hard Candy’s Dineh Mohajer — is also known for its lipgloss and eye makeup. More green coloring to go around!

4) Shinesty Suits

Shinesty is known for its novelty wear, which covers almost every occasional, holiday and circumstance you can think of. Their St. Patrick’s Day-themed selections are varied and excellent, offering options with and without clovers. Fun fact: I am getting married next week in a Shinesty suit. I am also likely to spend the 4th Of July in some their threads.

5) Clinique Fresh Pressed 7-Day System with Pure Vitamin C

As St. Patrick’s Day falls into the winter season, some cold air is to be expected. Fortunately, the new Fresh Pressed System from Clinique is designed as a daily supplement to visibly rejuvenate skin from the outside. In addition, its specialized stay-fresh packaging isolates the pure Vitamin C until activation, maintaining its freshness and full power for remarkable results as little as seven days.

6) The Eucalyptus Aloe Collection from H2O+

Looking for some green in your skincare and beauty regimens? H2O+’s new Eucalyptus Aloe Collection is green in terms of its packaging, the plants used to make the products, and the environmental consciousness of its production. Its body wash absolutely cleanses and refreshes as promised.

7) The Yes To Cucumbers Collection from Yes To

Yes To is known to incorporate vegetables into its products. The Yes To Cucumbers collection includes cleansing water, paper masks, eye kits, makeup removing pads, facial wipes, moisturizer, daily gel cleanser, hydrating mist, night cream, and sunscreen. So no matter the temperature or time of day, Yes To has some healthy greens available for you.

8) Call Time Styling Primer by IGK

IGK products are known to be free of parabens, sulfates, petroleum and gluten, while also cruelty-free, vegetarian and providing UV and heat protection. Its new Call Time Styling Primer — bright green in its packaging — is full of coconut oil and suitable for all hair types. It also contains the IGK Miami scent, which includes notes of guava, coconut water, pink lotus, midnight violet and vanilla.

9) Action Painting by The Creation

U.K. mod-rockers The Creation had a few charting singles before disbanding in 1968. To get psyched up for a St. Patty’s outing, why not start off with “Makin’ Time,” which Wes Anderson re-popularized via the film Rushmore? Action Painting is an impressive deluxe re-issue of The Creation’s catalog, now available via The Numero Group.

10) Michael Schenker Fest “Live” Tokyo by Michael Schenker

If hard rock is more suitable to getting ready for a Mar. 17 celebration, then consider checking out the latest from Scorpions, UFO and M.S.G. guitarist Michael Schenker. Michael Schenker Fest finds the German guitar legend at the center of his namesake live Japanese concert festival. Notable vocalists Gary Barden, Graham Bonnet and Robin McAuley reunite with Schenker to play the classics from the Michael Schenker catalog, which can be enjoyed via the CD, DVD, blu-ray and digital download formats as of Mar. 24.

11) Dr. Teal’s Pure Epsom Salt Soaking Solution

After a long day of partying on St. Patrick’s Day, the best way to unwind may be with a warm, comfortable bath. One brand to consider for that is Dr. Teal’s, as known for its Epsom Salt Soaks and Foaming Baths. Dr. Teal’s bath products hydrate and heal while providing a pleasant fragrance. Its Restore & Replenish Pink Himalayan Mineral Soak & Foaming Bath alone replenishes body with 84 essential minerals for all over body restoration.

Fridababy CEO Chelsea Hirschhorn’s restaurant picks for Downtown Magazine

Fridababy's Chelsea Hirschhorn
Fridababy’s Chelsea Hirschhorn

Focused on innovation, Fridababy aims to provide parents with the tools to simply and efficiently care for their babies. Since CEO Chelsea Hirschhorn joined Fridababy in 2014, the company has expanded into a 15,000 square foot facility. That growth has led to Fridababy’s geographic presence expanding from 5,000 doors to over 25,000 doors across North America. In turn, accolades have come from NBC’s Today (“Stuff We Love”), BuzzFeed (“47 Parenting Products That’ll Make Your Life Easier”), and Vogue (“The Ultimate Baby Registry Master List”) alike.

Prior to taking over Fridababy, Chelsea was a New York City-based bankruptcy attorney at Weil Gotshal & Manges, in addition to a role as Director of Ancillary Revenue for the Miami Marlins. Her J.D. was earned from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. In turn, Downtown asked “the Baby-Gadget Guru” — a mother of two — for some New York restaurant recommendations.

Fridababy can be visited at www.fridababy.com, while Chelsea and the brand can both be followed on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.

1) Babbo:

For the pasta tasting menu with a seat at the high top tables in the front, catching up with friends.

2) Chelsea Market:

After a session with the boys at the Chelsea Piers driving range or carousel, we walk over for lunch then stroll the Highline with our dessert in-hand.

3) La Esquina:

For very sentimental reasons — it was where my husband and I went on our very first date. It was pouring rain and the taxi pulled up to the corner and I looked at him like, “Are we really eating tacos in the window?” I’ve since learned to trust him implicitly!

4) Via Quadronno:

On the corner of 73rd & Madison, where I spent a lot of time escaping the downtown grind during law school; my parents were on 73rd between Park and Lex. Truly a more perfect cappuccino does not exist.

5) Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle:

A classic New York City vibe, and somewhere we always stop for a drink and music session pre or post-dinner.
