7 Healthier Twists We’re Making In 2018

It’s always a cliché whenever a year passes, isn’t it? In the new year, I’ll do this, this and that. Whether it’s the new year that’s prompted a fresh start, or it’s just feeling sluggish upon weeks of celebrating and the weather, we always like to take some time to look into our habits. Which can we change for the better?

Now, nutrition is often where we first look. Why? Because the holidays have us craving a little reset. When it’s winter, we’re susceptible to falling into “cozy” habits that include more time on the couch with treats and less time in the kitchen and outside.

These are 7 healthier twists we’re making in 2018. Are you making them too?

Cooking With Coconut Oil And Ghee Instead of Butter

Fat is important, it’s necessary, and it’s good for you. But not all fats are created equal. There are fats that are better for you and for cooking. We’re especially loving this Coconut Oil and Ghee from Carrington Farms. Coconut oil we love for its high content of natural saturated fats. Saturated fats not only increase your healthy cholesterol but also help convert the “bad” cholesterol into good cholesterols. Ghee is clarified butter originating from the Indian continent. The simmering process to make it means that it’s stripped from casein and lactose — and it has a high smoke point, so it’s perfect for cooking and give that real butter flavor we know and love.

Drinking Macadamia Milk Instead of Regular Milk

We know the debacle surrounding milk has been real. To drink or not to drink? While we totally support drinking milk if it’s good for you, some people don’t tolerate nor like milk. Whether you’re lactose intolerant or have chosen to go dairy-free for other reasons, there are plenty of alternatives out there. Lately, we’ve been on a macadamia milk kick. Yes, macadamia. You probably know all about almond milk, but did you know about macadamia milk? Milkadamia is changing the game with its dairy, soy, GMO’s and gluten free macadamia nut milk. They come in four varieties and they’re perfect in everything from coffee and smoothies to baking and cooking!

Trying New Fruit and Veggies

So fruit and veggies are good for you, no news there. And you’ve probably been gobbling them up already! But do you ever find yourself buying and eating the same kinds over and over again? We do! Which is why Farmbox Direct has answered our prayers. You can choose between All Natural or Only Organic — in which you can choose three sizes and whether you want veggies, fruit or mixed. The selection varies each week meaning you’ll get to try some new vegetables and fruits, and best of all: It comes straight to your door! Fresh, flavorful, healthy and convenient — what’s not to love?

Replacing Rice With Quinoa

Quinoa all day, every day. This little grain continues to be one of the world’s most popular health foods. And honestly, why wouldn’t it? It’s gluten-free, protein-packed and high in minerals like Iron and Magnesium — not to mention delicious! You can use it instead of rice, it’s a great source of protein for vegans and vegetarians and it cooks up fast. And it just got even easier! These Heat & Eat packets from Ancient Harvest are perfect for quick meals. The one with quinoa and sea salt is great for getting dinner on the table fast, while the two with lentils & garlic and chickpeas & garlic are perfect for lunch. Simply heat, mix with some salad and lunch is served.

Switching Out Skinny Pasta For Regular Pasta

Photo: Courtesy of skinnypastausa.com

We’re firm believers in not cutting out anything for good that brings you enjoyment. Unless you’re intolerant, you can eat your beloved pasta with a clear conscience. Just be aware of potions sizes and maybe choose whole wheat for a little more fiber. But, we also always believe in trying new things and finding alternatives to the foods we love — you know what they say, too much of a good thing… The Skinny Pasta is made out of the konjac plant, an all-natural plant that contains loads of fiber, meaning you’ll be fuller for longer. You can use it in dishes you’d normally use pasta or noodles in — just remember to give it a good rinse, and let it soak up the flavor of the dish.

Trying Out Healthier Version of Comfort Foods

Photo: Courtesy of vegetariansnob.com

We probably don’t have to mention comfort food twice before mac and cheese comes to mind. And there are healthier versions out there. Sometimes, yes — you’ll want your mamma’s homemade, classic recipe, or let’s be real; Kraft Foods. But, there are actually many more alternatives out there. Whether they contain brown rice pasta for the gluten-free like the one from Amy’s Kitchen, or a dairy-free version like the one from Road’s End, they’re delicious. Definitely worth a try, if you find yourself reacting to dairy or gluten — but have a hard time giving up childhood favorites. You can also make a vegan “cheese” sauce yourself with the help of cashews and nutritional yeast. And this goes for more dishes than just this one, healthified classics is a thing!

Choosing A Healthier Pizza

Look, we get it. New Yorkers need their pizzas! Sometimes a real gluten-packed one. But know that there are alternatives. If you regularly follow food trends, chances are you’ve heard about the cauliflower crust pizza, but have you heard about its counterpart, the Meatza? Pizza on a meat crust. Real Good Foods have three different flavors; supreme, pepperoni and three cheese. They’re made on an antibiotic, preservative-free parmesan chicken crust and they hands down taste delicious! Real Good Foods also have enchiladas and breakfast pizzas that are worth checking out if you’re more into Mexican meals or savory breakfasts!

Macadamia Professional’s Andy Rah on the Endless Summer Collection & more

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aayc4DUu25w

Macadamia Professional is known internationally for its salon-quality hair care, treatment and styling products that address the unique moisture level and styling needs of every woman. Its products contain an exclusive Pro Oil Complex, a blend of therapeutic Macadamia Oil and Argan Oil, rich in Omega 7, 5, 3 and 9 fatty acids, which deeply yet weightlessly nourish and repair hair from the inside out. Macadamia’s new The Sun Surf Collection also includes products with Olive and Coconut Oils, Sunflower Seed Oil and Shea Butter.

To learn more about Macadamia, Downtown caught up with Andy Rah, Vice President of Global Marketing for Macadamia Beauty. More on Macadamia can be found at www.macadamiahair.com.

Andy Rah

Were you always in the beauty industry? Or did you start out on a different path?

Andy Rah: I started out in management consulting out of college, and I spent about eight years doing that. I realized that it wasn’t what I wanted to do in the long run, though, so I went back to business school to get my MBA.

How did you get your start in the hair care industry?

AR: I actually got my start in New York City, interning for L’Oreal USA working on the Garnier Fructis brand. I loved the industry so much that I took a full time job there, working on the L’Oreal Paris haircare brands for three years before moving to Texas to be closer to my future wife. From there, it just kept going as I spent five years with TIGI before ending up here at Macadamia Beauty.

Do you think that there are any misconceptions about proper hair care?

AR: Some people are trained to think that just because a shampoo is sulfate-free, it’s safe for their hair color. That’s not always the case — the surfactant system, which creates the lovely foam in a shampoo, whether it’s sulfate-free or not may be unsafe for color. There are a lot of variables involved; Macadamia Professional shampoos are all tested and proven to be great for color-treated hair. They do happen to be free of sulfates, parabens and gluten as well, but consumers should be careful and do more research to make sure they aren’t washing their expensive hair color down the drain!

What is a typical day like for you working for Macadamia Professional?

AR: I wish I could say it was all photo shoots and New York Fashion Week glamorous, but a lot of my role is making sure all of the details are covered. Working on budgets, in-store merchandising, promotions, social/digital/PR campaigns, e-commerce, planning for the future and trying to figure out where to take our brand next. We’re always looking for the next big thing to wow our salon and retail customers as well as bringing something innovative to our consumers.

What is coming up for Macadamia? Any new products? Partnerships? Promotions?

AR: We are coming up on summer, so we always feature our Endless Summer collection of products. We also have our liter-sized shampoos and conditioners for sale through our independent salon partners and premium retail partners like Ulta and Beauty Brands; definitely a great time to stock up! We just launched our Foaming Root Boosting Spray and our Thermal Protectant Spray earlier this year. Definitely more exciting products coming out in the second half of the year as well.

What is your favorite Macadamia Professional product?

AR: I think the Tousled Texture Finishing Spray is a must-have. You just spray it into the hair — not on it, but into the layers — shake your head, and voila, instant volume and texture! Gives you big Texas hair, without a lot of work.

When not busy with Macadamia what do you like to do for fun?

AR: I like traveling, playing sports and most of all, cooking and eating. I have a six-year old daughter, Delaney, and four-year old son, Tristan, and they both make homemade pasta with me already. They love cooking because they see how much fun I have doing it. I was definitely an aspiring chef in a past life! Plus, I just love to eat.

Do you have tickets to any upcoming concerts or events?

AR: Whenever I am in New York, I try to stop in and see whatever show my niece, Ellie Kim, is in. Right now, she’s a swing playing seven roles in School Of Rock on Broadway. Her and the other kids are so amazingly talented, it’s unbelievable what they can do as a group of 10-year olds. I think my sister has been to the show about 30 times already!

Do you have a favorite restaurant in New York?

AR: This is an easy one: Wolfgang’s Steakhouse. I used to live a few blocks from the one on Park Avenue. The bacon appetizer and the Porterhouse steak are two of my favorite dishes anywhere. Wolfgang’s was started by someone who was with Peter Luger’s for a long time, so you know his restaurants are born out of one of the quintessential, original New York Steakhouses.

Finally, any last words on why you love New York?

AR: That’s pretty easy for me; being able to get anything I want to eat, whenever I want to eat it! Of course, the energy, vibrancy, diversity and the variety of things to do is unparalleled, but when I’m in New York, it’s all about the food.

4 Great Hair Care Brands To Consider This Fall

Rita Hazan
Rita Hazan

There is no shortage of fun or healthy hair care products out there. So when it comes to taking care of your hair this season, it can feel overwhelming when trying to choose the right product for you. In turn, Downtown has not only sampled a myriad of new products — to help lead you to what may work best for you — but has also spoken to reps from those brands:

  • Rita Hazan is a world-renowned hair colorist and owner of the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City.
  • Aaron Grenia is the co-founder of IGK Hair, which is known for its “hairstyling for the modern generation.”
  • Vaughn Acord — who works out of his salon Mizu — is at the helm of V76, which makes American-sourced products that are free of petroleum, sulfates, parabens, gluten and non-vegan elements.
  • Brad and Sarah Pearsall are the co-founders for BRÖÖ, an all-natural haircare collection infused with craft beer, which isn’t just served for Oktoberfest.

What is coming up for your brand?

Rita Hazan: The Root Concealer Temple + Brow Touch-Up Stick — it’s an extension of my original Root Concealer and it’s made for the temples and eyebrows. If you have gray in your brows, a brow pencil won’t cover it, it will only colors your skin. My Touch-Up Stick will actually cover the gray and fill in the brow at the same time – one product that does it all.

Aaron Grenia: Right now we are in full launch mode so a lot of upcoming travel to support this. We are also finalizing five new formulas to launch next year with new technology, and we’re really excited for them.

Vaughn Acord: The 4-in-1 Cleansing Foam, Blue Cedar EDT, Daily Balance Exfoliating Facial Cleanser and Daily Balance Facial Moisturizer are all new from the brand.

Brad & Sarah Pearsall: We’ve got some amazing new products coming soon that are “brewed for dudes!”

Do you have a favorite new product from your brand?

Rita Hazan: Triple Threat Split End Remedy — it keeps my hair strong. I can color as much as I want, blow-dry and flat iron almost every day and my hair stays shiny, long, and healthy.

Aaron Grenia: I love so many of them, right now my top three are Call Time Styling Primer, Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel and Sunday Funday Texture Foam. They all have amazing sheen and textures.

Vaughn Acord: I have waited so long for these to launch and they are all favorites of mine. I do think the 4-in-1 Cleansing Foam is very cool!

Brad & Sarah Pearsall: We both love our Invigorating Shampoo and Conditioner. Since we’re married, I guess it makes sense we like the same thing!

What is your favorite restaurant in New York City?

    Rita Hazan: Locanda Verde.

Aaron Grenia: Carbone, for sure. The food and service there is five-star.

Vaughn Acord: TBar — I’m a creature of habit. I’ve never had a bad meal there and they have the most incredible host. Sant Ambroeus is another one I love.

Brad & Sarah Pearsall: We love the restaurant, La Birreria, because they had us at beer! It’s a beautiful rooftop restaurant on top of Eataly. We also like any hand-pulled noodle place in Chinatown and any Korean restaurant with K-pop karaoke. Are you seeing a theme?

What is the next concert or live event you plan on attending?

    Rita Hazan: Beyoncé.

Aaron Grenia: It’s between Drake/Future or Die Antwoord coming up this month.

Vaughn Acord: Attending a show, as I often work on many — Los Lobos.

Brad & Sarah Pearsall: Just saw Brian Wilson perform Pet Sounds in its entirety last month. Would love to experience that again. We are always in the city in December, for our wedding anniversary, so we love anything on the bill at Birdland!
