Exquisite Holiday Wine Gifts from E. Guigal & Juve & Camps

Since it was first made in 1972, Gran Juvé has always been an emblematic Cava, representing the best of Juvé & Camps. Categorized as “Brut” with just 5g/l of dosage, it is only produced in exceptional vintages and is made using the best quality grapes from select vineyard plots. Aged in the bottle for about 42 months, it showcases the intensity and complexity that Cava can achieve. Hints of white flowers and stone fruit are followed by notes of a long-aged cava: brioche, toasted flavors, spices, and honey. Chardonnay contributes to the creamy mouthfeel and the Xarel.lo to the elegance and long finish. Exquisitely balanced, this dry cava is expressive, intense, complex, and fresh, a harmony of endless sensations.

Juvé & Camps Reserva de la Familia Gran Reserva 2017

A winegrowing family for over 200 years, Juvé first started producing sparkling wines under their name in 1921. This family-owned, 100% estate-based producer is revered in Spain for its painstaking focus on quality and sustainability.“Reserva de la Familia” (translating to ‘Reserve of the Family’) is the leading Gran Reserva in the world, always vintage-dated, and all the more notable because of the quality needed to produce it without dosage (‘Brut Nature’ designation). Deep, intense and elegant, initially evokes notes of ripe white fruits followed by hints of fennel, toast, and citrus to complete its distinguished aroma. Its creamy mousse is perfectly integrated in the palate, making its texture in the mouth simultaneously fresh, rounded, and evocative.

Tea Forte’s Warming Joy Collection

Tea is our office staple. Some love their coffee, for Downtown we prefer tea. A much more relaxing way to wake up or unwind. It’s more of an experience, a ritual, far more than just brewing. Many prepare just the perfect cup of tea individually, for some it’s the rich cream and the perfect amount of raw sugar first then the pour-in Tea Forte’s steeped tea. While others go all-natural, with lemon, and honey, regardless of your process, be sure to ask for Tea Forte this holiday season, or this could be added to your very own list!

This holiday season, be sure to open the lid to reveal a tea menu and a collection of 20 pyramid infusers in five blends, including Raspberry Ganache, Harvest Apple Spice, Winter Chai, Rum Raisin Biscotti, Spiced Ginger Plum, or our Publisher’s favorite the classics, like English Breakfast, Earl Gray, or Estate Darjeeling.

The Scrumptious Side Sleeper Pillow

Every person is unique, we each sleep in different positions. Are you a side or back sleeper? Have you heard that traditional rectangular pillows aren’t designed to support our neck and shoulders perfectly no matter what position we happen to sleep in? We’ve heard this from both our physical therapist and medical doctors, there is more and more research about having the best pillow to match your body. This unique curve from the side sleeper pillow by Honeydew does just that, it supports your neck and shoulders whether you are on your side or your back and offers proper neck alignment and support. Give yourself the gift of healthy sleep, or if you are feeling generous, get one for the entire family!

All Body by Honeydew Pillow

Are you like most people, rolling up a towel, or placing an extra pillow between your knees? Sleeping with a pillow between your knees dramatically improves spinal alignment and promotes sleeping on your side, which helps to lessen tossing and turning throughout the night and significantly improves breathing. This can greatly reduce or even eliminate snoring, and also provides tremendous relief for those who suffer from sleep apnea. Also, hugging has been found to release oxytocin and serotonin in your body. Simply put, snuggling up with a body pillow at night can lower your heart rate and reduce stress levels. This promotes a sense of comfort and peace that will improve the quality of sleep.

Have you ever wanted to remove some stuffing from your pillow? Honeydew’s fill is the most important part of your new pillow. It literally took years of prototypes and testing before they found that oh-so-perfect blend of materials, in just the right ratio, allowing for the perfect combination of support and softness. All Honeydew pillows have a discreetly hidden zipper that lets you add or remove fill to make sure your new pillow is the perfect height for your body.

Wagz Freedom Smart Dog Collar

For each wish made and each interaction with Luminaries, Brookfield Place will donate $1 up to $25,000 to City Harvest, New York City’s largest food rescue organization.

This year, Luminaries debuts Maestro, a new interactive experience that will enable guests to conduct their own symphony. Maestro leverages skeletal tracking technology which allows you to show off your creativity as your own unique light show is displayed in unison with holiday music. Explore Social Distance-Friendly NYC Holiday Events by Charter Bus

The holidays may look a little different this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the season with your loved ones! Rather than scrambling to distance yourself from your fellow subway passengers or hailing cab after cab after cab throughout the day, round up your established pod of loved ones and let a thoroughly sanitized New York City bus rental transport you to these fan-favorite events this holiday season:

Rockefeller Christmas Tree

The holidays in Manhattan wouldn’t be the same without America’s favorite Christmas tree. You can marvel at all 75 feet of this glittering Norway Spruce both online (through the Rockefeller Building’s live stream) and in-person—with a face covering on, of course.

Have your bus driver drop everyone off near the tree-viewing entrances on 49th and 50th Streets and 5th and 6th Avenues, and follow the markers on the ground as you wait in line to have your moment with the tree. These social distancing markers can only accommodate up to four people per spot, so large groups will need to split into smaller pods. Once you’ve reached the bedazzled, 11-ton tree, your group will have five minutes to take in the lights and take as many Christmas-card-worthy photos as you please.

Bryant Park Winter Village

If you haven’t already picked out gifts for your loved ones, why not buy local? That’s right, the Winter Village is still up and running! From handmade jewelry to boutique maple syrups, piping hot cocoa to fresh-baked gingerbread, this outdoor market has a little holiday cheer for everyone.

While you’ll find fewer vendors here than in years past, the new layout allows for wider walkways and more room for social distancing while you wander through the stalls. Hand sanitizing stations are available around the village, and many vendors use contactless payment methods. Oh, and all staff will be wearing masks and face coverings—so you should too.

Brooklyn’s Largest Menorah

Though it’s no longer “NYC’s Largest Menorah” (it now shares the title with the display in Central Park), this huge Brooklyn spectacle is still a sight to behold this holiday season. This menorah towers at 32 feet high—the maximum height it can possibly be by Jewish law—and you need a crane to light each candle!

Stop by any night of Chanukah to catch the celebration at the Grand Army Plaza. Many past years’ customs will still be in place, so expect live music, food vendors, and some small gifts for the kids. Social distancing protocols will be used, but if the crowds get to be too much, grab a hot latke to-go and take a walk along some of Prospect Park’s lesser-known trails.

HolidayMagic at the NYBG

If your merrymakers are lucky enough to be Members, Patrons, Corporate Members, or Bronx Community Partners for the New York Botanical Garden, you’re in for a treat. This year, you’ll have exclusive access to the gardens’ Holiday Train Show! Come by before Jan. 31 to see the model trains zip through miniature replicas of NYC landmarks made from natural materials like birch bark, acorns, and cinnamon sticks. Besides limiting the number of people allowed into this year’s event, NYBG is also implementing an online-only ticket reservation system, as well as increased cleaning efforts and face-covering requirements for all visitors (including children over the age of 2).

Not a member? Not to worry, there’s always NYBG GLOW: the twinkling light display in the Haupt Conservatory! There should be plenty of space to spread out within the conservatory, and there’s a lot to see outside as well. Your tiny tots and children-at-heart are sure to love the illuminated ice sculptures and tap their feet to pop-up performances by The Hip Hop Nutcracker. Like the train show, tickets for NYBG GLOW must be purchased online and in advance, and entry windows are timed to limit the number of people inside.

The Rink at Brookfield Place

From now until the first week of April, you can show off your skating skills to your loved ones and perfect your triple salchow at this downtown outdoor rink. It costs $15 for an hour time slot on the ice and $5 per skate rental—through private skate sessions are reservable for an extra fee. Skaters and onlookers alike must have their temperature taken every day they stop by, everyone must skate at least 6 feet apart, and visitors must wear masks at all times: while waiting in line, while watching the skaters glide by, and while skating.

The rink itself boasts 7,350 square feet of ice (plenty of room to spread out!), and your skaters can always take a break to stroll along the Hudson if it gets too crowded for your liking. And when you’ve had your fill of ice, everyone can warm back up on your completely climate-controlled bus rental, which can include plush reclining seats for your groups’ comfort.

At Theatre XIV, The Holiday Spirit Lives On

Are you looking for that last bit of holiday cheer? It is hiding in Bushwick. From the outside, Theatre XIV blends in with its industrial surroundings: a simple door and a dozen feet of black wall covered in posters. Your only real hint, unless there is a line outside, is the bright red enigmatic glowing sign that reads “XIV.” IT looks like a total dive.

Step through the door, though, and you will find yourself in another place and time. Decadent camp fills the foyer like 17th century Versailles put on a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. The decor is wood and velvet, oriental rugs and chandeliers. Guests, mostly dressed in black, mingle with cast members decked out in gold, sequins, and fur. Between them, there is hardly an eye left unlined.

Nutcracker Rouge

The theatre itself is a black box, but you won’t notice. Behind the terraced half-circle seating, a realistic tree stretches out snarling branches as if to give shade. To one side as you enter, a long wooden bar a century out of time offers a wide selection of alcohol beneath a shimmering chandelier.

But the most arresting sight is the stage itself, which thrusts out into the crowd ringed by bare bulbs and flanked by even more chandeliers. The curtain, when down, displays a decadent scene of French aristocracy in masquerade finery. It is fitting–see foyer above.

As the show starts, the theatre fills with a mist tinted red by the stage lights. And then you’re in another world.

Nutcracker Rouge, Theatre XIV’s Christmas-themed burlesque show, is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. There was a sense of tasteful decadence: more dancing, more singing, more ensemble, more sex appeal. It wasn’t just that there was so much ballet in this burlesque show; it was that they did ballet in heels.

And they crushed. The musical numbers resounded. The acrobatics drew gasps. The dance was elegant, beautiful, and coordinated. Most of the performers combined talents–dancing or singing while swinging from the ceiling, or performing strange feats between dance numbers. And it was all in heels. Anything you have seen done elsewhere, they can do in heels.

Nutcracker Rouge
Albert Cadabra, Christin Flores, Ben Green, Nicholas Katen Credit: Mark Shelby Perry

Throughout, the show flows cleanly between coordinated ensemble acts to individual performances, all guided by the sugarplum fairy (Christine Flores), the show’s throughline and silent guide. Armed with a sense of childlike wonder and glee, Sugarplum explores each act with the audience. Sometimes she joins in, while other times she just watches and reacts.

If you are interested in taking a little opulence, a little decadence, a little sex, and a lot of glamour, into the new year, Nutcracker Rouge is a can’t-miss. Grab a ticket now: the holiday ends after this weekend.

And then check out their next show, Seven Sins, beginning Valentine’s Day.

How to Be a Savvy Online Christmas Shopper

Christmas in Nigeria is a family event – a time to come together and celebrate the special people in our lives. Between the bowls of joloff and the banging of fireworks, one of the ways we show how much we care is by exchanging presents, and there’s nothing worse than worrying that your gifts will seem inadequate once given.

While it’s not all about the presents, it does give us a warm and fuzzy feeling to know we’ve chosen well, but even this cannot offset the worry that comes from going over budget and being concerned about how you’ll cover your costs once Christmas is done.

The trick is to shop savvy; to tread the fine line between giving great presents and not breaking the bank. Here are our three top tips to help you.

Shop around

When it comes to picking out presents, it’s important not to make your purchases without first shopping around, especially at Christmas time when money is tight. This means that you shouldn’t buy gifts from the first place you find them, but should compare a number of different retailers to see who’s offering what you want at the lowest price. You’ll likely be surprised by the variation you discover once you dig a little deeper and begin to search out the superior offers. Even if prices are similar, hold off on buying for a bit and keep an eye out for sales and promotions, as shops often use these as a way of getting ahead of their competitors over the Christmas period.

Review before you buy

Last but not least, be sure to do your research before you buy. The best way to get your hands on presents their recipients will appreciate is to review them prior to purchase, and websites like Trustpilot have been set up for this specific purpose. Not only this but make sure you read the products’ descriptions in detail too. The same rule applies to anything you spend your money on during the holiday season; whether it’s a present for your mother-in-law or indulging in a spot of online shopping or gaming for yourself. Take advantage of the Black Friday sales

While the best sales tend to happen once Christmas is over, there is a particular retail event that could help you to save some serious cash. We’re talking about Black Friday, which has fast become the biggest shopping occasion in the Nigerian calendar. With dozens of different businesses getting on board and slashing their prices, you’ll find there are some truly amazing offers out there, which can help you to get your hands on the presents you want without breaking the bank. The trick is to be clever, so sign up to the mailing lists of your favorite websites in advance to make sure you’re the first to hear about any discounts or promos they’re hosting.

When it comes to buying the perfect Christmas presents without breaking the bank, there are three primary rules to follow: shop around, take advantage of sales, and do your research to gain a better idea of what you’re purchasing. Follow these, and you should find your holiday shopping is a lot less stressful and significantly cheaper too!

Doris Dear Decks the Halls: An Interview with Raymond DeForest

All photos by Kristen Blush

2019’s Doris Dear Christmas Special may have ended just a few short weeks ago, but creator Raymond DeForest is already hard at work dreaming up his show for Christmas 2020. This is the fifth year for the special, which features host Doris Dear, played by DeForest, joins a cast of performers to share diverse holiday traditions and stories. For us at Downtown, it is a favorite annual treat.

Each year, the show has raised money for “The Longest Day” initiative with the Alzheimers Association, selling custom-made enamel pins and cookies. The character of Doris Dear was inspired by DeForest’s mother, who passed away a few years ago from Alzheimer’s.

As the new year passed, we got a chance to learn more about the Doris Dear Christmas Special with DeForest–Ms. Doris Dear herself–and a peek into the creative process behind the show.

Downtown: How do you prepare for your infamous holiday show?

Raymond DeForest: I start thinking about my next show in January after I have had time to relax and come down from the absolute enjoyment I feel from doing my three-night run of “The Doris Dear Christmas Special.” It starts with an idea, usually sparked by a memory of growing up in Staten Island with my family that I then run by my director, Lina Koutrakos. I am usually inspired by a certain moment growing up like when my sister and I would lay on the floor, staring up through the Christmas tree at the lights. Then I start looking at music and songs; I try not to repeat what was done the year before. That’s not easy. It’s a holiday show, and there are some songs like White Christmas that, for me, seems to say “Merry Christmas” better than anything. There is always a balance between giving my audience a nostalgic feeling through songs and stories mixed with more modern takes on the holiday to keep current.

DT: Who were your guests for this year?

RD: This year’s guests were, as one audience member exclaimed to me, “AMAZING!”. Lina Koutrakos, my director, has a permanent spot. She is a bluesy rock gal that does a song like no one I know. “Those Girls” are a girls group that brings a nostalgic, yet modern take on some great songs (“Jing-A-Ling” is an audience favorite). Patrick DeGennaro, my musical director this year, wrote a brand-new song just for us, and it was so wonderful and holiday spirit-filled. Ari Axelrod was a new addition, and he was charming and funny. Not only did he sing a beautiful rendition of “The Nearness of you” but also played the conga and charmed us with his stories of Hanukah. Sean Harkness is another permanent guest in the Rumpus Room. When Sean plays guitar, the audience swoons.

DT: How long does it take you to rehearse?

RD: I start rehearsing myself around mid-summer. I am constantly writing and refining my material as I rehearse the songs, so the stories and songs feel seamless. I don’t stop that refining until the show closes! The cast comes in about a month before the shows, to work with the musical director, director, and I, going over parts and script.

DT: Do you add new guests each year?

RD: Each year I try to change the talent slightly. About 50% of my audience are repeats, so providing them with new talent is important.

DT: Tell us a little about your piano player and his song, which he performed this year.

RD: My piano player/musical director this year was Patrick DeGennaro. We had worked together on my new solo show, “More Gurl Talk,” that I performed at The Music Theater of CT, NYC, and the historic theater in Fire Island. I wanted him to do something special for the show, so he decided to write something for us. The song, “I Know It’s Christmas” was perfect and Doris Dear was in it!

DT: You have a lot of guests at your show. What do you attribute this to?

RD: This was my fifth year doing the show. The shows sell well and attract an audience that is not the usual “cabaret” audience. It has a wider reach, so talented singers and musicians want to be a part of the show. I am very honored that I have that rich talent on my stage. When I sit back on the side of the stage and listen to these artists, I think to myself, “wow, how are you so darn lucky!”

DT: Where does your talent come from, and when did you know that you were going to be a performer?

RD: My talent comes from the very deep pool of amazing singers and musicians that are here in NYC. These are world-class performers. As I said, I am truly a very lucky girl to have them in my “Rumpus Room.”

I stepped on stage in college and new that very minute that I wanted to do this as my profession. I am honored to say I have been a full time working actor/singer for 42 years!

DT: What can we expect next from your work?

RD: I am always looking for ways to bring my message of family and love to a wider audience. At 61 years of age, I only do the work that is authentic and real for me. If I am not going to enjoy the work, I turn it down. The character of Doris Dear has opened up a whole new way of storytelling and performing for me. I am in talks with a major studio about bringing Doris Dear to a wide TV audience as well as bringing my shows to Universities and also teach students about the “art” of character development and storytelling. It’s very exciting for me to share my experience of the past 42 years in the business.

I also work on several committees with the SAG-AFTRA union and can help new actors coming into the business with maneuvering the real world. We live in such a strange world right now. There is so much hate coming from so many places. When my audience walks into my “Rumpus Room,” I want that feeling of a tough world left outside. I want my space to be one where all people can come and have a good time. As one reviewer from your magazine said…“ … I LEFT THE PLAY WITH A SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR AND THAT WARM AND FUZZY FEELING OF A LIFE FAR LESS COMPLICATED THAN THE FAST-PACED ONE OF TODAY. THANK YOU, DEAR DORIS!” – DOWNTOWN MAGAZINE

DT: Every year your show gets us ready for the holidays, and now you are hitting an even younger generation, who know nothing about the 1950s/60s. Does this lack of direct connection and experience worry you?

RD: It doesn’t “worry” me as much as it keeps me aware of what I am writing. I try hard to reference nostalgia without being so “old fashioned” that I lose anyone under 50 years of age!! LOL. This year I had several children come to many of my shows. Many stopped by after the show to tell me how much they loved it and especially the character of Doris Dear. As one beautiful girl said to me …” You are the aunt I always dreamed of having”. That’s the best compliment I could get. So, I guess that makes Doris not only the “Perfect American Housewife” but also the “The perfect crazy aunt”!!!
