guyhotelflyer

Starting today, the trendy hotel and “urban resort,” OUT NYC (510 W. 42nd Street) is transforming into the G.U.Y. Hotel, and unveiling the Lady Gaga Gallery.

The Gallery features costumes, props, art, and more from Lady Gaga’s latest music video, G.U.Y, and is open daily, free, until April 10th. The opening was timed with Lady Gaga’s 28th birthday, as well as her sold-out, seven-night run at Roseland Ballroom (the final performances before the Roseland closes its doors after nearly a century of business).

Next Friday, OUT NYC’s nightclub, BPM, and CLICK are hosting the singer’s official Roseland after-party. Her producer DJ White Shadow and Steven Redant of Bent Collective will play DJ for the soiree.

Until the close of the exhibition on April 10th, OUT NYC will also be offering a “Gaga Paparazzi Package” with deluxe rooms being offered for $249 a night, which include two complimentary “Poker Fizz” signature cocktails at KTCHN restaurant, two pairs of OUT sunglasses, and VIP access to the “Official Roseland After-Party” at BPM (Friday, April 4th ONLY).

The brand, ghd is a household name among stylists, is known for revolutionizing the hair-straightening game, and has been called the “Aston Martin of Haircare,” winning multiple awards for the best flatirons and hairdryers on the market.

Valentino Profits And Fashion Empire Continues To Grow

Valentino Garavani has been a working fashion designer since 1960, and his empire continues to grow. According to WWD, the company netted a profit of $644.1 million in 2013, a 25 percent increase from $500.5 million in 2012.

CEO Stefano Sassi credits the rise in revenue to the fact that the Italian fashion house’s primary market remains Europe, rather than China, where other luxury brands experienced sales slumps last year. In addition to its impressive sales figures, Valentino is also opening stores in three new locations: Fifth Avenue in New York, Piazza Mignanelli in Rome, and Canton Road in Hong Kong.

Remembering A Fashion Icon: L’Wren Scott

The fashion industry was devastated yesterday with the news of the tragic death of  designer L’Wren Scott, who was found dead in her Chelsea apartment of an apparent suicide.

A remarkably graceful and talented woman, Ms. Scott grew up with Mormon parents in a small town in Utah. By the time she was 12, the statuesque L’Wren was already six-feet tall, and began to sew and design her own clothes to fit her impressive stature, modifying things she picked up at thrift stores.

Scouted at age 18 by photographer Bruce Weber, she started her fashion career as a model, working for Chanel, Thierry Mugler, and Calvin Klein. Later, she became a celebrity stylist and costume designer.

In 2006, she launched her own successful fashion line with a collection called ‘The Little Black Dress,’ and she went on to dress many of Hollywood’s A-list celebrities. Last year, she released a successful holiday capsule collection with Banana Republic.

Scott’s designs are the epitome of elegance. She was able to combine upscale elegance with sex appeal and even a rockstar vibe. Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Amy Adams, Penelope Cruz and many more fashion forward celebrites are often seen wearing her designs.

Scott dated Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger for the last 13 years. The rock icon was on tour (for which Scott designed the band’s costumes) in Australia at the time of the tragedy. “Shocked and devastated,” Jagger is returning to New York and has postponed the band’s upcoming performances.

A flurry of speculation and gossip has unfolded since yesterday’s news—including unconfirmed reports of Mick Jagger dumping Scott, along with the designer’s alleged financial woes. Jagger reps vehemently denied any break up, but Scott’s business troubles have been confirmed. She canceled her London Fashion Week show unexpectedly and her company was millions in debt.

Scott leaves behind a grieving public, family, friends, and many fans of her work.

New York Historical Society Presents “Bill Cunningham: Facades”

The New York Historical Society is now featuring a fascinating period photo and fashion exhibit by renowned photographer called Bill Cunningham: Facades which will bring you into the heart of the city of another era.

The show features 88 silver gelatin prints that Cunningham shot over a period of eight years, between 1968 and 1976. Cunningham hunted through thrift stores, auctions, and street stalls for period costumes (more than 500) dating back as far as the 1770s, to dress his muse, Editta Sherman in to pose in front of multiple historic New York landmarks (he scouted more than 1,800 locations).

The result is a love letter to the city—which offers an interesting perspective of the period and surroundings of the times. After the photos were published in a book, Facades (1978), Mr. Cunningham donated all of the originals to The New York Historical Society.

Cunningham, who can be credited with contributing to the genesis of street style photography, has been snapping photos of stylish passerby for more than five decades.

He currently has his own column in the New York Times dedicated to this pursuit, and he was profiled in the 2010 documentary, Bill Cunningham New York, directed by Richard Press.

Jewelry Brand Dannijo Debuts Handbag Collection On Fifth Anniversary

To mark the brand’s fifth anniversary, celebrated jewelry brand Dannijo has just launched its first collection of handbags.

The Dannijo Sisters
The Dannijo Sisters

Dannijo is a New York-based label launched by two sisters, Jodie and Danielle Snyder, who have been profiled by DOWNTOWN Magazine. The pair grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and started making jewelry together as children. Eventually, both sisters ended up in New York with uncertain career paths, and decided to take the plunge into entrepeneurship. Together they have created an incredibly successful business; their designs are worn by celebrities such as Beyonce, fashion bloggers, and style-conscious women alike, and are available in such high-end stores as Bergdorf Goodman.

Lenox Clutch

Dannijo designs are easily recognizable for their unapologetic decadence; statement pieces- colorful chandelier earringschunky cuffs, and bold necklaces– are their signature. Surprisingly, their new line of handbags is refreshingly simple. The collection of two clutches, two cross-bodies, a tote, and a pouch is incredibly wearable, classic, and practical.

The bags are handmade in Italy and start around $500 and up. A standout of the collection is the “Lypton” bag, a crossbody that comes in a few colors. Check out the robin’s egg blue and the tan with metal bib details.
