Paradise Island, Bahamas: One Island, Two Experiences

Located just over a narrow waterway from Nassau, Paradise Island offers the best of the Caribbean—sun, sand, pampering resorts—but in a small, easy-to-explore package. Even better, a wide range of properties let you choose the experience that suits your personality.

Small Resort: The Four Seasons Ocean Club

It’s just about 5:00 pm when I hear an unexpected knock at my door. Peering through the peephole, I see what must be a mirage: a tuxedoed waiter holding a tray containing two flutes of sparkling wine and a plate of chocolate covered strawberries. Turns out it’s not my imagination: each evening, at sunset, Champagne and chocolate are delivered to every room, along with a smile and wish for a lovely night. As the light deepens, I stand on my balcony, listening to the chorus of ringing crystal flutes from guests in nearby room and their quiet murmurs as they discuss their evening plans. Many will choose to stay on property for dinner at Dune, Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s French-Asian restaurant. If you can, reserve a table next to the tall windows, which offer uninterrupted views of the ocean.

Open since 1962, this historic resort has, over the years, hosted A-listers ranging from Frank Sinatra and Daniel Craig to Beyonce and Jay-Z; Kerry Washington, Angela Bassett and Cindy Crawford. Rebranded in early 2018 as a Four Seasons, the resort’s classic Caribbean style remains. Broad green lawns dappled with hammocks, tall palms and Adirondack chairs overlook a wide, empty beach that fronts the electric blue Caribbean. Walking paths wind through the lush 36 acre estate and lead to the elegant colonial-style lobby building, where you can sip a martini at the same bar where James Bond ordered his in the 2006 movie Casino Royale. Be sure to make time for the tennis center and spa, which is comprised of individual treatment villas set within its own private walled garden. Three pools—including one set up for kids and one just for adults–mean you’ll never have to get up at dawn to save your chaise lounge with a paperback and a bottle of sunscreen. Both the Four Seasons and Atlantis offer access to the Ocean Club Golf Course, which was designed by Tom Weiskopf and features several ocean-view holes.

The resort is also home to one of the island’s unique features: the ruins of a 12th-century Augustinian cloister that the original owner had taken apart, crated and shipped from France. It was reassembled, piece by piece, and stands on a sloping hillside overlooking the resort’s tiered Versailles-inspired garden, a dreamy space filled with koi ponds, marble statuary, hidden reflection gardens and emerald-green lawns. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic…or a wedding. Like the rest of the resort, it exudes a sense of peace and space, inviting guests to pause and enjoy their surroundings.

Most of the 107 rooms and suites have ocean views; all have private terraces and oversized marble bathrooms with double sinks. Comprising part of the original club, the Hartford Wing has a nautical theme with a bright, tropical vibe. Rooms in the newer Crescent Wing are decorated with traditional deep mahogany furnishings and rattan touches.

Big Resort: Atlantis

I was nervous about my stay at Atlantis. As a rule, I’ll choose intimate over sprawling every time. My first pleasant surprise arrived moments after my arrival. Assuming that my mid-morning arrival would mean that my room wouldn’t be ready, I’d booked a treatment at the spa, where I could hang out (and shower) before checking in. Although the spa was busy, I was welcomed warmly and led to a massive waiting area filled with magazines and comfy couches. I also had access to the hydrotherapy area, where I could indulge in a steam, a mineral bath or a sauna while I waited. And while the facilities were lovely, it was the staff that made a difference, providing an abundance of products for me to use when I realized I’d forgotten my own.

So what exactly is Atlantis? In a nutshell, it’s a 171-acre megaresort—3,000 guest rooms fill five hotels, each with their own personality–arranged around a water park featuring 18 water slides, two mile-long river rides, 20 swimming areas and 11 swimming pools. I didn’t expect to try any of the water features, but peer pressure won out and, after grabbing an inner tube, I spent 30 exhilarating minutes whooshing through rapids surrounded by families too busy laughing to even think about their phones. The open-air, ocean-fed marine habitat is the largest in the world; underground viewing areas transform parts into a giant aquarium, complete with scheduled feedings and opportunities for interaction, like snorkeling. An early morning run through the property turned out to be the best way to take in the mesmerizing exhibits: not only was the area deserted, but the cool tunnels provided a shady respite from the sun. It was impressive, too, filled with elegant manta rays, sneering Moray eels, ethereal jellyfish and otherworldly hammerhead sharks and sawfish.

Beyond offering a wealth of typical vacation diversions—shopping, gambling, sunning—the resort is surprisingly rich in cultural experiences as well. At the newly-opened Fish by Jose Andres, diners can taste (and learn about) lionfish, a predatory species that is decimating reefs throughout the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The ice-cream bar at the recently-renovated Coral Hotel celebrates traditional Bahamian desserts like Guava Duff and ingredients such as sea grapes, watermelon jam and allspice. There are also outposts of beloved Bahamian restaurants where guests can try traditional dishes and drinks, craft shops selling only items made in the Bahamas and a Bahamian story hour for kids. The most recent cultural addition is Sacred Space, a sculpture series featuring seven dancing women that was created by Antonius Roberts, a renowned Bahamian artist and sculptor. The piece was made withlocal Madeira wood and represents the intention of triumph, hope and determination and a vision to help conserve Bahamian heritage.

Arlyn Broche talks “Ballers,” upcoming projects, New York and more

2016 has been a break-out year for actress Arlyn Broche, thanks to her role as Tonya on the HBO hit Ballers. But Ballers was not Arlyn’s first role, as she has been acting since she was a child. Beyond Ballers, the Miami native recently appeared on CBS’ The Inspectors and has roles in two forthcoming indie movies, Fallaway and Mary.

Arlyn spoke to Downtown about what is coming up in her career and how she manages to successfully juggle life as an actress while being a married mother of three. Beyond pages on Twitter and Facebook, Arlyn stays active online at www.arlynbroche.com.

Prior to being cast on Ballers, had you worked with any of the cast before?

Arlyn Broche: Unfortunately I had not.

Did you grow up as a sports fan?

AB: Yes! Actually my brother was an avid football and basketball fan and we shared the TV set. So I ended up understanding the games and have been hooked since then.

Do you have a favorite moment from Season 1, before Tonya appeared on Ballers?

AB: Season 1 is a lot of fun, I love the banter and play between Joe and Spencer, it cracks me up. I’m a Miami girl and the show itself depicts the Miami vibe, which is up-beat and entertaining. Many have commented that Miami is a separate character on the show and I agree.

If I were to pick what I like most from Season 1, it may sound a little biased but, upon reflecting on my work on the show as Tonya, my favorite episodes are the ones that end up bringing Spencer to the pharmacy. Here he is, a former athlete and now a very successful agent who on the flip side is dealing with constant physical pain. As an actor, it is always exciting to look beyond the script and see the real-life struggles of the character and portray that. I think Dwayne does a phenomenal job of walking that fine line of the outward persona he has to show in Strasmore and the struggles he has to repress in order to do that.

You grew up in Florida, where Ballers is set. Had you done any acting work in Florida previously?

AB: Yes I’ve worked on numerous short films, some feature films and commercials.

Are you still based in Florida?

AB: Yes, my home is in Florida but, I love to travel and work provides me countless opportunities to do what I love!

2015 was your break-out year as an actress. How has it been since then?

AB: I feel very fortunate for the opportunities that presented themselves in 2015. Wow! They really have opened so many other doors and have generated so many other opportunities that I am currently pursuing. It’s been quite a ride, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ballers aside, what’s coming up for you as an actress?

AB: Well I was just on CBS’ The Inspectors opposite Terry Serpico and Jessica Lundy, they are lovely to work with. There are several projects that I’m working on at the moment, two feature films — Fallaway and Mary — and a web series called SWAGG. I have other projects in talks but, nothing official yet.

Do you have goals for your career? Or are you more the type of person that lets things fall into place?

AB: My goal in my career is to reach people, touch them, entertain them, evoke and stir their emotions. My main goal is to reach a point where my body of work speaks for me.

Do you have aspirations beyond acting? To write, direct or produce?

AB: You know, whenever I’m on set I’m always observing and learning. I would love the opportunity to produce and direct in the future, every facet that goes into the creation of films fascinate me.

Have you ever been to New York City for acting work?

AB: I have been to New York many times but, not for work. Funny enough, I worked with a great group of people cast from New York — here in Miami on a project that was an interactive theatrical experience called Oculto Manor. It was a very different gig that I had ever done before. Many of the cast members I worked with are in Sleep No More, a New York City production of interactive work of theatre that was created by a British theatre company called Punchdrunk.

Do you have a favorite spot in New York City when it comes to dining or hanging out?

AB: It might sound cliché, but I love New York. It’s an impressive city, it also reminds a lot of Miami in that there is something for everybody. Last time I was there was last year during December, a friend recommended a restaurant called Buddakan. My family and I thought it was quite lovely. When I visit other cities I always like to go where the locals go, not the touristy areas in order to experience the vibe of the people from there. I love John’s Pizzeria Of Bleecker Street. It’s laid back and casual, but the pizza there is insane! My kids love to ice skate in Central Park every time we go. Again, great city, great vibe!

When you’re not busy with your career, how do you like to spend your free time?

AB: Well, for the most part I always seem to find myself working. (laughs) Funny story, this summer I was on vacation with the family in the Caribbean and my agent called me about a request for submission on an episodic that had a quick turn-around. So of course, my son and I prepped everything in the hotel room and made it happen!

That’s the nature of this business. But aside from that I’m a family girl, so when I’m not busy with work, my time is with my husband and three kids, and boy do they always have things to do!

When it comes to balancing your career and being a mother to three children, how do you manage to get that done?

AB: Well, I think balance is essential in life period. There are days I wish I had 30 hours instead of 24, but what I have learned is that quality beats quantity. There are tons of books on motherhood, but it’s kind of like riding a bike — you don’t really know until you do it. But I’m very blessed because my husband is extremely supportive of me and my career. My kids are good kids and I’m proud to say I have an awesome team. They truly are the foundation to my success.

Finally, Arlyn, any last words for the kids?

AB: Dream big and follow your passion, do what you love. In life you will fail at something, it might as well be what makes you feel alive. Anything is possible if you set your mind and heart to it.

6 Amazing Places To Travel To For The Best Photo Ops

Alicante

Here are some of Amra and Elma’s favorite places to travel for photo ops:

1. Venice, Italy

One of our favorite place to visit is definitely Venice because of its unforgettable romantic ambience. The charming canals, the grandoise villas, and the out of this world gelato…This lovely city is built on water and usually in the summer there are huge crowds of people from all over the world, but even when it’s busy, you can dodge the crowds –- go just a few streets from the Rialto and San Marco. You are always just an alley away from a secret square like the stunning Gothic palazzi and lively neighborhood wine bars. Venice is very unique, largely due to its canals and history, so you will enjoy breathtaking views and eye catching villas, where you can capture some of the best scenery with your camera.

Venice also has some of the best restaurants and Venetian food is full of seafood specialities. My favorite is the black ink pasta, you must try if you haven’t already! If you want to have an exquisite city view, go across to the island of San Giorgio, there’s a fantastic view and there’s hardly anyone there!

2. Jamaica

Jamaica has long been the jewel of the Caribbean for its white sand beaches and its crystal clear emerald waters. With that said, if you visit Jamaica, there is far more to discover than its beaches and all-inclusive resorts. To getaway from your resort, I suggest going inland and seeing the waterfalls and protected caves. While enjoying the sunshine, you can play in the surfing waters, ride horses or even swim with the dolphins. In that case, go to the Dolphin Cove, it’s a marine attraction at which guests can swim and interact with dolphins and even sharks in their natural environment!

Generally, the local food is spicy but always fresh and very tasty. Jamaica is one of the liveliest places to be, as it has amazing culture, history and some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen! You can take some of the best photos on the blue lagoons or beautiful streets of Jamaica. Oh, and did we mention that its inhabitants are very friendly?

Cinque Terre

3. Cinque Terre, Italy

This was by far one of my favorite places I have ever visited. This lovely Italian Riviera is on the UNESCO’s World Heritage sites with its breathtaking Ligurian coastline. It consists of five seaside villages and and the towering cliffs behind them. It feels like a dream with its colorful houses atop of the cliffs overlooking the majestic Adriatic Sea! You will see churches in the colorful villages, with an amazing history and some unbelievably-stunning places to take photos. The rocky coastal cliffs are breathtaking, you can take a train, a boat or a car, the national park stands on its own away from Milan.

We enjoyed dining on a few terraces overlooking the sea. You can enjoy the seaside from the towering cliffs or just go for a great meal and a glass of wine in a tucked away restaurant. We tried some of the local specialties and the fresh seafood was out of this world! This is a place with special charm, breath-taking views, and it must be on your travel bucket list.

4. Monaco, French Riviera

In the heart of Mediterranean, bounded by the French Riviera to the west and the Italian Riviera to the east, Monaco is truly full of the “old Hollywood glam and glitz,” on top of being a perfect summer escape. Just walking through the streets of old town of Monte Carlo reminded me of the Old Hollywood glamour of Princess Grace Kelly and visiting the Palace and being at Port Hercules of the vintage James Bond movies. We loved every second of it!

Monte Carlo has some of the most elegant boulevards. There is much shopping to be done on Avenue de la Costa with its luxury boutiques. The Palace is uniquely-positioned, high above the sea with a panoramic view. When in Monaco, you can enjoy museums, exotic gardens, or you can visit the Opera House. The blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the fancy restaurants and Monaco’s harbors make it such a picturesque place.

Tabarca

5. Alicante, Spain

Located on the Mediterranean Sea, with a rich history and such friendly people, Alicante was a perfect destination for us. It is a quaint city with lots of European tourists in the summer. Alicante is an amazing summer destination, it has both sandy and rocky beaches, depending on what you prefer. You can take some of the best beach photos here with its rocky caves and emerald green waters. The various districts maintain their own characteristic flare while simultaneously and effortlessly complementing each other.

Here, there are restaurants for all tastes and budgets. This city has that magic charm and it is definitely worth a visit! Also, if in Alicante, you must visit the charming island of Tabarca — it’s just one hour away by boat and it’s absolutely stunning! Not many tourists visit this island, but it’s definitely worth the journey. We spent a day there, enjoying its local seaside restaurants and also swimming in its calm waters.

Ibiza
Ibiza

6. Ibiza, Spain

Known for its rambunctious nightlife, the island of Ibiza has amazing beaches and some of the most picturesque sunsets. If you want to avoid the young and lovely summer crowd, there are beaches tucked away with white sand and turquoise water. Ibiza has so much to offer for photographers with its lovely sandy bays and photogenic rocky terrains.

Visiting the old town was amazing, going and through labyrinth-like streets, it felt like we were in a different century! Also, their gastronomy is amazing, as there is variety of delicious beach restaurants — and you need to try some of their cocktails. Ibiza is definitely more than a party island, full of old world charm, and its secluded beaches make it a perfect getaway spot!
